    Nice Peter, way to play the strategy game! With limited time you have to play to the strengths of each spot! It’s funny, I had a very similar day to you, in terms of species caught… including the toadfish! I was so close to keeping one but I decided to chuck it back… next time!

    • @PeterRanieriII

      That’s exactly right Dan! It can be a real mind game when your out there sometimes and it can be tricky picking where you want to be in the window of time you have. That’s great, I’m looking forward to your video as you know. That oyster toad tasted like an over cooked scallop and it was a royal pain to filet. I don’t think I’d keep another

      @@FishinAccomplished if you can figure out how to filet it easier it may be worth it. Maybe I overcooked it bc I cooked it with the tog so if you do get one maybe try to cook on it’s own, it’s a very nice looking meat

    Lights out day on the cod grounds. While only three cod were landed all trip, the sea bass was unbelievable. I limited out within two hours, and literally over 4 dozen shorts. They were hitting equally well on clams and orange Gulp grubs. It was drop and reel fishing all day.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love to hear it! You got any of the cod? Cod and sea bass are best tasting fish around. Been seeing a lot of seabass inshore too lately

      @@PeterRanieriII No cod for me. We took the long ride out to Cox's. Reached our first spot at 9, and by 11, most everyone had their limit of sea bass or close to it. We probably landed close to three hundred fish. A handful of scup, some cunner, and the dogfish didn't bother us too much.

    I found some good action this morning at the Meadowbrook bride on the south shore. Bite was hot from low to half way up. Then once the water started moving more the bite disappeared. No keepers but, some were close, and the boat next to me got 2 keepers.

      Great to hear that! I also found similar experiences when fishing bridges they seem to bite good as the current slows, same with the bays. In the sound especially in deeper water sometimes it’s the opposite

      I think you are spot on Tom, with relief shading and spot lock trolling motors it has become much easier than it probably used to be to catch blackfish. I still hear of people catching big ones in 15' or less still but it hasn't happened for me past few years

    Peter
    love your vids
    i am stuck here in Queens with having bought a 2000 dollarkayak whose selling point was its lightness, but really I never should have bought it,, it was 2016 AND IT WAS BEFORE THE PEDDLES CAME OUT PLUS NO RUDDER MADE IT A TARGET FOR ME GETTING FLIPPED FROM A BOAT'S WAKE
    anyway I will buy a better yak when I move,, which is why I am writing to you
    I was hoping to move way out hopefully on the north fork until I have to stop going east because everything would be too expensive
    but I am 65 and planned to spend my last years fishing in the sound as far east as I could manage
    but I have had (possibly) a change of mind,, seeing you and others also , have such productive fishing in what appears to be the Northport area,, I just might change my plans and try to find something in your neck o woods, and end my days there,,,,,,, hey the water is more tranquil more friendly to kayak
    and if I can I might just go for a small boat,,,,, but the kayak is still the much less expensive option, what will all the hidden and not so hidden expenses that come with a boat.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve, first off thanks for the comment. Thats a bit of a bummer about the kayak you bought but I can't recommend these pedal-drive style kayaks enough and still think you should sell that one and get a pedal-drive kayak. The hobie passport 12' R is lightweight and under $2k but you can go with any brand really, there's so many out there nowadays. I think you have the right idea, north shore is typically calmer than south shore but you need access so as long as you get a place that has access to the bay or sound for residents your golden. Maybe the fishing is a little better the more east you go but in reality, if you really study your local places and fish them often you will find productive areas at certain times of the year anywhere here on the northshore. Hope you go for it!

      @PeterRanieriII  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevetautog880 im very close to northport (just a little west) and yes it's all very similar as far as access goes in these areas. for example if you were a resident of northport then you'll have access to all the beaches in northport. and in addition to being a resident, I think its about $60 for the annual parking sticker as well

    Hey Peter great video as always. Gio here from Glen Island. My first trip out around the porgy shoal Area with lots of rock structure and I caught as many shorts as you can find in a goldfish fish tank. Meanwhile some of my pals sitting on chairs fishing from shore in the Hudson park and Glen Island areas are catching 19 inchers. But not all the time of course. My question is, What is your preferred depth early in the season?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gio, haha sounds familiar. I guess my short answer is I'm still trying to figure that out, lol. But maybe its location specific and not as easy to say all blackfish come shallow in the early season. For me, where I typically go in the Sound around boulder fields, I just dont have great luck getting big fish in shallow in early season out there. In the back bay however I have had good luck finding decent fish in shallow so I do think its location specific. Last year I didnt fish shallow for them at all in the sound because I found them deep in the early season so I just fished 40'-60' throughout the entire season, and they seemed to be there all the time.

      Sure Mark, here's the 3 things it basically is: GoPro Hero7 amzn.to/3sjUxaZ, Dive housing amzn.to/3eV4nNp, fishing line mount amzn.to/3CLOO2s. I've done some slight mods to it to help better stabilize it in the water although this is still the most difficult part while getting fish to eat in the frame. I went this route instead of the underwater cameras like "gofish cam" or "waterwolf" because I just dont like the spinning effect that happens a lot with those, plus I had the old gopro anyways after I got a new gopro so it was cheaper. heres an old video i did on the setup, ive since modified it slightly since then but the basics are here: th-cam.com/video/ewCQ1A0ABwU/w-d-xo.html

    I noticed you didn't have any painted jig heads as some people use, do you think painted jig heads make a difference or is it all on the bait. Peace.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good observation Juan, on this trip I was actually testing out more drab colors...want to do more testing but I did originally think the brighter jigs got more attention especially in dirtier water, deeper water, or rocks with a lot of growth. But I'm not so sure it matters all that much if you have enough fish around, the commotion of the small fish is what triggers the bigger fish to investigate more so I think

    Been out Black fishing the last few days. Have to be patience; sometimes they just start hitting after fishing for an hour or two. Got two on opening day and three keepers the other day after fishing for three hours and one this morning. Lost a real nice one in the structure. Sometimes you win sometime they do. They are eating Asians and Green crabs on jigs. I have been taking some of smaller greens and using the whole crab. Tends to stay on longer and the bigger fish(if interested )will crush them.
