    I think you are very sweet and it is refreshing to see younger people remembering motion picture actors from long ago. I remember seeing him in Lost Horizon and A Double Life and enjoying those pictures as a young teenager. My mother liked him and I dug his voice. He is out of vogue now but Turner is currently putting him in the limelight this month of July '17 as star of the month. Keep up the good work, sweetie, you are a doll!

    I agree with you. Ronald Colman comes across as a decent fellow, and it is refreshing to this elderly Englishman that the ethos he projects is still appreciated.

    I apologise, Jerome, for being a late arrival to your channel. I must say I'm surprised that you've developed a love for the older movies and actors, but I do believe that has something to with being an avid reader. There's something about older movies that brings out the story more, even if Hollywood tended to alter endings of book adaptations to suit mass audiences.
    When I was little, my mum turned me on to old movies and I am lucky enough to be from an era when television would always be showing these gems as either evening fare or late night and into the wee hours of the morning. I watched everything and loved them all.
    Ronald Colman quickly became one of my favourite actors of all. His calm delivery, even in moments of stress, his unique voice, his versatility, his ability to convey emotion with just a look. As a man, I can even look at him and unashamedly agree that he was very handsome. What struck me most about him was always the sense of honour he portrayed. I felt the heartbreak when he knew he had to leave Princess Flavia in The Prisoner of Zenda, yet I also knew it was the right thing to do. I have done my best to echo his sense of honour in my own life and I can honestly say, a lot of myself came from watching his movies. Best of all, his honour extended to his private life, where he stayed steadfastly true to his wife and family, despite all the temptation his working life would give him.
    Thank you for recognising this wonderful actor. The world could use role models like Ronald Colman.

    Great video! So nice to see I'm not the only member of a younger generation who has love and admiration for Ronald Colman and his work. Still can't get over how handsome he is. And that voice! Oh my. I read the biography a few years back, when I was about 13 or 14, and loved it. A very touching and poignant book. (By the way, yes, Ronald Colman is totally my celebrity crush!)

    A SUPER-favorite actor of ours!! To me he literally DEFINED what fine actors/fine artists (and human beings) ideally are. Price I believe, aspired to be very much as in this same way. Thanks for talking about the book (and...speaking of "book"...I better get over to the pony express!)

      How lovely! Yes, Vincent Price was a big fan of Colman and cited him as an inspiration. It was a dream come true when he got to do a film with him, and they ended up as costars twice.

    @Weiselberry Hello fellow silver screen enthusiast! Just came across your video. You are so sweet and down to earth! Love Ronald Colman! I’m a 21st century woman myself but still in love with silver screen cinema.
    I agree with everyone here that Ronald Colman along with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Basil Rathbone and Jimmy Stewart were true gentlemen with a timeless charm and class that is deeply admired and respected to this day. Good to see so many people still appreciating these classics! Thanks for sharing. Didn’t know about the biography. All the best to you!🙂

    Hi Jerome & TY for this clip, I like your passion for Ronald Colman. He is one of my favorite actors, pleased you mentioned his transition from silent pictures to then embrace speaking movies & TV & Radio too. I hope you have had a chance to see & listen to his Halls Of Ivy series. I'm still discovering many of his radio broadcasts. :-)

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've not yet gotten a chance to listen to or watch The Halls of Ivy. I listened to all of the Colmans' appearances on Jack Benny's show (and loved them!), but the other has been harder to find. But your comment prompted me to do some more searching, and I just found an archive online where you can listen to all the radio episodes! :)

    Thank you for introducing me to another really interesting person whose movies I will want to watch! I always thought Dana Andrews was the most handsome of the old-time actors.....but Colman is right up there.

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dana Andrews made some great movies (Laura, A Walk in the Sun, The Best Years of Our Lives, Where the Sidewalk Ends). He and Colman both aged very well, although Colman died relatively young and Andrews lived to 83.

      @violinlady5524 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jerome Weiselberry Did you see Dana Andrews in "Ball of Fire"? Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwick, Gene Krupa! Great old movie! But that's getting of the subject at hand......

      I have--hilarious movie! I forgot Andrews was in that.

  • @jingham2387
    @jingham2387 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I was also really surprised that he is forgotten...not merely forgotten but conspicuously so...but also as an English person where it is said that one can know almost everything about a person within 20 seconds of them speaking (accent social class wealth) RC spoke a posh form of English but it was not RS (received speech or BBC accent).. it was an accent full of anomalies impossible to place define or explain... I just thought I'd tell you..to the listener on this side of the pond he was a real enigma.

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hm, that's very interesting. I knew he had an unusual accent, but I wasn't aware it sounded so unusual to a native English person as well. Thanks for sharing that!

    Where may I find a copy of "A Double Life"? It is a great film. And to all the film experts out there, I am going crazy to find a copy of "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs", starring Robert Preston and Dorothy McGuire. I want to see it one more time and I am pushing 70 without years to wait. Thank you.

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rented "A Double Life" out of the library. That's how I find most of these movies, unless I catch them on Turner Classic Movies. I looked up "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs," and unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available on DVD, nor has it been uploaded on the internet. I'd recommend visiting tcm.com, going to "Community," and clicking "Suggest a Movie". There's no guarantee they'll play it, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

    Dear Jerome
    Congratulations on your excellent review of this book and Ronald Colman film reviews. I am a member of the Ronald Colman Appreciation Society on Facebook. As you are clearly such an enthusiast I extend an invitation to join us, it's a public group do take a look, we are currently running a campaign to vote for 'Lost Horizon' to be registered at the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress.
    If you are interested in further reading 'The films of Ronald Colman' by Lawrence J. Quirk 'Ronald Colman, Gentleman of the Cinema' by R. Dixon Smith 'Ronald Colman A Bio-Bibliography by Sam Frank, As to films 'Stella Dallas' 1925 'Beau Geste' 1926 'Cynara' 1931 'The Light that Failed' 1939 I could go on ... Again I am thrilled you have discovered this fabulous actor and promoted him on TH-cam. His contribution to film has been overlooked by many, this needs to change. Hope to hear from you.and again commend your championing of film history long may it continue.

      +Sheila Bryans Thank you for the invitation! I'd love to check out the group. When I was researching books about Ronald Colman, I had a rough time deciding between "A Very Private Person" and "Gentleman of the Cinema." In the end I chose his daughter's book because I expected it would be a more intimate portrait (and I wasn't disappointed). But I'd definitely be interested in reading more about him, especially if those books include anecdotes from movie sets, etc. Thank you for the book and film recommendations! I'd like to see as much of his work as is available.

    Jerome, I agree, a close relative can give a portrait that the historian cannot as they are at a remove. Your ears must have been burning. I posted your videos on Facebook and the feedback is very positive. I am also a member of 2 'closed' groups 'My 'Reel' Life' & 'Silent Films Today' both excellent and a public group 'Vilma Banky:Hungarian Rhapsody' Colman's silent co-star.
    'Condemned' 1929 was the film that got me hooked 'The Parade's Gone By' by Kevin Brownlow is essential film history reading, you may know this one already. Would be wonderful if you could do a Film Registry vlog on TH-cam, just an idea. Best Wishes again.

    The Jack Benny Facebook page is asking asking about the real life relationship between he and Ronald Coleman. Can you shed light on that???

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I looked up all mentions of Jack Benny in this particular biography and found this on page 234: "Ronnie and Benita's guest appearances on the Jack Benny radio show expanded along with their success with radio audiences. . . . The programs were pleasant for all concerned; Benny was flattered, Benita positively glowed at working again, and Ronnie just enjoyed the lighthearted comedy."
      Benny himself is quoted on pages 235-6: "I wanted Ronnie on the show because he was nice, he had a beautiful voice, and we all knew he was a great actor. I was very proud of myself that he liked working with me. . . . When people ask me which were my funniest shows that I enjoyed most, I still say the ones we did together with the Colmans on radio. . . ."
      I hope that gives some insight! There are other biographies of Colman that might say more, but I haven't read them yet.

      As the title states, the video is a review of the biography, not a biography itself. The primary purpose is to show the book and to comment on it as a biography of Ronald Colman written from his daughter's perspective. Wikipedia or IMDb or any number of websites and other videos are out there to provide quick answers to your questions. Or you could read the book yourself, but it sounds like that's not something you're interested in.

    I'ts not odd at all that these people are forgotten just from history thats what happens. I'm British and born in the 60's I know about Coleman because you'd still see his movies as a kid in movie matinees on ITV or BBC in the 70's but now. I think you will come to realise that fame is fleeting and all thats left is a name that might be remembered, this will happen to the very biggest stars of today after three generations. Like his movies
