    I have to comment that this has been my favorite luxury review of all time. For €12,000, standing waiting at the station for 90 minutes, food that was just okay, and a cabin that small, it is certainly not worth the cost.
    Many reviewers I’ve seen on the orient express seem to have been gifted a suite or other high level cabin and then do nothing but gush about the experience. This has been eye-opening to me and has changed how I view this train.
    Please keep it up!

      I'm pretty sure the VSOE uses dynamic pricing for reservations, so the E8,000 price could increase if you booked a popular trip last minute. In addition I noticed he paid for the extra Breakfast in the Dining Car. I can't remember the exact price, but let's say it was an additional E120 each. It's not cheap. They could have also had Caviar at lunch or dinner which is around E650 per person per meal.
      He and his wife had a E600 bottle of wine for lunch. You can see the price in the Wine Menu of the Grand Cru they ordered.
      I also saw the Krug being poured. Krug and several drinks - he said he was in the Bar Car until the Early hours - would add up. Plus tips or Service Charges. I can see how he could easily have got up to E12,000.

    • @marllram

      @@gilbydog7350 I also think why vsoe maintained the mostly small cabin size throughout the years not only for more passenger capacity, but to add profit from the bar. Who'd stay at that cramped cabin? People would inadvertently come to the bar, and spend some there. Great business for them, but sucks for the passengers.

The food wasn't the best l've ever had, but well presented by kind and helpful staff. The piano bar was great and going across the lagoon into Venice was spectacular. Then travelling by boat to our super hotel. Your journey seemed very expensive. There's a much larger cabin on that, but booking that is well over 100,000 Euros and you still don't get a shower. If you're lucky the air conditioner works. Essentially, you are seeing what passed for luxury back when the route was relevant. Modern construction/materials allow a lot more amenities in modern trains. I think the price for a one night trip is ridiculous, but people apparently pay it.

    Food is so subjective, if people are not used to Michelin star restaurant quality, then the orient express will seem a step up from going to McDonald’s. Plus, €12,000 seems to be a tad high for what you actually get. I’m sure I’ve seen cabin prices and service cheaper !!

    The long delay on the platform in the heat probably set the tone. I think one has to look at it as an “experience” and not judge it exactly in the same way one would judge either a fine restaurant or a luxury hotel. I would love to do it, but can’t quite justify the price to my inner head lol

    • @Frogbjb
      @Frogbjb 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Maybe, but for $6000/person they better have the finest food available, better be prepared the way a 2-3 Michelin starred chef would serve it, it better be the pinnacle of luxury which it really doesn’t look like in this video. Two people could go around to every 3 star restaurant in Paris and still spend less than this “experience”, and you’d probably spend the time enjoying it more than feeling miserable and claustrophobic.

    • @keithss67
      @keithss67 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Frogbjb ummmmm as I wrote, it’s an “experience” and it’s a train 🚂. It’s not the ritz and it’s not a 3 michilen star restaurant. You go for the whole experience. If you don’t understand that, or you don’t agree with it, that’s fine. But it is what it is

      @@keithss67 yeah. I personally don’t see the value in it, I’m sure some people do though but I’m guessing for most it’s something they only do once. There’s a reason a lot of people leave the experience with a similar takeaway to this guy

      I can see the value of a slow train traversing the Alps in a good cabin with big windows and comfortable sofas , sipping some top notch coffe as you take in the views, then have a shower, a brilliant dinner and some fun at the bar, making friends having a good chat and to end the night with your wife and a bottle of krug on a nice bed... Great review! ... I am happy to scratch this train off my bucket list!
    Also, the classic thing I noticed ... Batard on the list 2018, the one you got 2019 ... just HOW HARD is it to update the damn list for 12k eur per person.
    And the wines, all of them, plus the bar, should be free and ad libitum for 12k.
    I would 100 times over rather go to say 3 Michelins and give it hell with wine and still be under 4k per person.

    $0 or so years ago, we took the VSOE from London to Paris, and a couple of years later did the reverse journey. The Pullman carriages in the UK were comfortable and the food good quality. The Wagon Lit carriages in Europe were good for day travel, but I'd not want to sleep in one. The bed would probably have been comfortable enough, but you had to go to the end of the carriage to use the wc. No shower provided. By contrast, the Indian Pacific we took a couple of times from Adelaide to Sydney gave private shower and wc to each double room; single rooms had their own wc, but no shower.
    We were fortunate in our Paris-London journey. There was a severe storm in the Channel, and our journey was changed from one port to another at each end. We did not have to worry about that, all the changes being managed by the VSOE staff.

    12,000 Euro for a piano man and a bad back. I have been considering the OE as a "Bucket List" experience. I would put up with your grievances if I could smoke a cigar in the smoking car, if there was a smoking car, or on the balcony of the very last car... watching the world fade away behind me or rather, in front of me. Your experience is very disappointing. Things are not what they used to be. Thank you and your wife for the OE experience and review.

    I was on the board of that train around 20 years ago. ( Just for a quick visit) not asa customer. The food is prepared out of the train and they just heat it there,the kitchen are so tiny that is almost a miracle to plate nice dishes. The delay doesn't depend on the train company, but the "Trenitalia". Of course they should have announced you, and/or apologised with a Krug bottle in your room. I think Alexander is too young and restless to travel on such a train. Those trips are for old people who are retired and have plenty of time. The water in the scrambled egg dish may be the steam from the condensation(i suppose the plate had a cloche) to keep it warm. I new two gentlemen who worked on that train years ago and yes they were available for their customers 24 hours, as Alexander mentioned an immense work and attention to details. I like the way Alexander lived this experience with philosophy and understood that it isn't for him.

    The ceiling fan is wobbly. For 12,000 Euro a night, even something like that would annoy me. Like, I noticed it straight away through a video, surely the staff have seen it too, but just couldn't be bothered tightening it in between trips. It would take 5 minutes to fix.

    For that price, this "piece of history" needs some updating. With no lounge for waiting at the station, they could at least have refreshments available. The cabins could be made more comfortable and showers added without destroying the historic ambiance. For the food, perhaps they should have a less challenging menu but do it well. As pointed out, some airlines serve an elegant first-class meal with more limited space for food prep. At least the staff earned mostly high grades. There are some experiences that are worth having once but never again, and I guess this is one of them.
