🐝 I pack a small, empty backpack , and an empty insulated water bottle for use on day hikes. Also, a cotton bandana can be used for nearly anything: washcloth, eyemask, makeshift purse, cushioning for fragile gifts, etc.

I only carry a small tote or carryon that can fit under my seat. I have a capsule wardrobe in packing cubes in which I tightly roll everything. I can last for weeks and months by packing this way. Easy traveler. Less is more. ❤️✈️

I'd like to try out packing cubes. Can you recommend a set? Or should I just buy them off Amazon or elsewhere?

Bobby Graham Bobby, if you go to my TH-cam Chsnnel under all the videos in the description section the cubes I use are in my Amazon store. Or just log on to Amazon and look for packing cubes, that might be easier for you. Most of them are about the same price, but you will love them because they make packing so easy. Most even gave handles that you can carry in and out of your suitcase or into the powder room if they are toiletries. Good luck.

@@lifewithsandrahart While not a hyper-organized traveler, I’ve used Eagle Creek’s Pack-it cubes for many years. They’re now made of an extremely thin, durable nylon-type fabric, with reliable zippers. They now make a compression version, which is ideal for carry-on packing.
Sometimes the anticipation is almost enjoyable as the trip (particularly after 15 months of pandemic travel restrictions, which aren’t over yet), so pre-packing these adds to the fun.

Thank you for posting this...women over 50. If I hear one more packing list with crop tops and playsuites!...LOL. I travel carry-on for Europe/ Asia. The electronic stuff was amiss, cables, adaptors, phone etc. I have finally learned to pack either a rain cape or umbrella, since I do not stay in my hotel when it rains; I'm a traveller not a tourist. I am ALWAYS looking for things I will use and take no space or weight, I will look into your wristlets...excellent new packing essential. I use the shampoo bar too. A spork, [I won't eat with my fingers] I always pack one and it moves to my day pack everyday when I explore. I have also recently added the travel door lock. Your list is very close to mine. Nice video.

I always travel with just a carry on. Using a backpack for your "personal" item makes packing easy! I put a small pocketbook (with passport, credit cards, cash, phone, etc) kindle, tablet, meds, snacks, and whatever squish-able clothing I can fit it. You'll be surprised at how much fits under the airline seat. I simplify make up,skin & hair care when I travel. I wear the heavier of the 2 pairs of shoes that I choose for my trip. I do take a pair of sock slippers, even in a good hotel you don't always want to be barefoot.

  • @vsing53

I always take an extension cord. It was a life-saver for my traveling companion last year. She uses a c-pap at night and there were no plugs close enough to the bed for her to plug in her machine at night so the extension cord saved the day (or night, in this case!). I normally carry the extension cord to plug in my phone and tablet. I can plug it into one adapter and not have to carry extras. As has been mentioned by some others here, I always carry a small, foldable umbrella. Bathing suit. Must carry a bathing suit for the hot tub at the end of a long day of hiking, sightseeing or shopping. 😎

I wear a front, shoulder sling pack for phone, travel docs and valuables and a super lightweight backpack for all else. I roll my clothing to fit in the backpack and plan to wash things as needed to hang dry in the hotel bathroom shower, so that I can take less. A sweatshirt gets tied around my waist. Therefore, I am carrying everything I need without pulling a suitcase or straining my shoulders. It also makes me hands-free to navigate whatever I am doing!

recently I take road trips (covid19 pandemic) with hubby. But I STILL watch pack light videos because I was always an over packer. Now at age 70, hubby and I can't lug heavy bags anymore. I always use a rolling under seat Personal Item size bag as my main 'carry on' bag. We use it for a board game, blank journal with pens/markers + glue stick for crafting/collaging + micro scissors, and 'common items' like butt wipes, air spray, white noise device/baby monitor, etc.
For my real 'personal item ', in addition to the essentials (phone & charger, wallet, keys, destination info, tickets, rescue inhaler, eye drops, readers) that I pack between my mini-backpack and large waist bag, I always take:
pantiliners, small nail file + small emery board, packable backpack hanging from on carabiner, huge packable tote bag (use it for laundry basket) hanging from carabiner, foldable camping water bottle hanging from carabiner, travel diary, 2 ChapSticks, SPF50 packets, deodorant wipes, travel tissue, eye mask & earplugs, handheld electronic Solitaire game, shades, Ricola cough drops, 2 baggies, bandana, large sarong, 2-pc. tankini and/or 1-pc. maillot, visor, pain pills, comfy thin hoodie card, Tee shirt, leggings or capris, tunic, 1 bra, 1 pr. panties (wash nightly), travel WaterPik, small afro pick, chopsticks I found in Paris..
I use the hotel's complimentary toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shower cap, toothbrush + paste. tfs

I too like to travel light. I keep a written list of what to pack for places I repeatedly visit in the actual suitcase. I edit it after each trip. That way, I can bring only what I need, but everything that I need. It's worthwhile to bring as little as possible in case you might want to purchase things while away. I find it fun to buy ordinary items like toothpaste or deodorant abroad when I run out because they are little reminders of my trip that I can use up once back home. For younger women, please remember to bring certain disposable paper items ahead of time since they may not be available overseas in every place. For everyone, I was warned that in Egypt toilet paper is not supplied in public restrooms. One has to buy it, and each person is allotted less than necessary. Bring little packets of tissues!

Hi Margaret, in an ideal world of weather, this packing would definitely work, however, if you go somewhere hot and humid, or cold, you would be struggling a lot. When I go to Bermuda, I change clothes two or three times a day I sweat so much, but in Canada, I need sweaters, layers, and thicker pants. In humid climates, clothes take forever to dry, even panties. So it really depends on what type of trip you are going on but this would work for a city trip in a temperate climate. I would always take extra pair of shoes just in case!

Try on EVERYTHING before you go! I bought two tops to replace a worn old favorite. Tried only one on (fit perfectly) and accidentally took the other, which was mislabelled. Take flip flops or shower shoes for hotel and wash out undies, etc, when you shower. While traveling, buy forgotten items to wear--great top, scarf, sweater. I always buy earrings while traveling and my useful items make great souvenirs I use for years.

I’m a in-depth planner when it comes to packing. I adore getting ready for my trips. I also prefer carry on only and my family is astonished of what I can fit in the carryon suitcase and large tote. I prefer dresses in warm climates and rewear the dresses on alternate days (1st time is in the evening, then the same dress for daytime with a day or two in between). I have packed for 10 days in just my 2 bags. I have a bankers box that I’ve put a photo of where I’m going next on the end to identify quickly, so as I think of things I’d like to take, it gets tossed into the correct box. On the flip side when I get home and unpack, the items I know I’ll want to take again, go back into the next box for the next trip. Currently, I have 3boxes that I’m working on, 3 trips planned from now until next June. I have tons of other tricks, too numerous to mention right now.
I have a Bric’s cargo duffle. I love it. Kinda pricey, but it will last me the rest of my days and probably someone else’s after I’m through with it. I also have a cheap rolling carryon that is more than a decade old that I use. We don’t fly internationally so that’s a plus for me.

Remember to take sunscreen!! I take sunscreen, SPF lip balm protection and a hat. Of course I live on a sailboat in hot climates but we always take just carry on. It is quite difficult sometimes when flying to two different states in one trip, Florida and Pennsylvania as the climate is different. And if I need to I also can mail clothes ahead, usually $13-$18 for a USPS Priority box and that's cheaper than having to pay the airlines for checking a suitcase. And we use duffles since we can't store suitcases onboard our boat and I go cheap, the good expensive ones don't last any longer or stay any nicer when dealing with flying so I go with a Walmart brand duffle and replace as needed. Happy traveling.

    • @bobbygraham3350
      @bobbygraham3350 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I love that you use duffles on board boat. Great tip for anyone who's considering a small boat or coach cruise - or even a small plane flight! Duffle bags are best for storage.

Hi - you mentioned jersey-types pants versus leggings and I wondered if you have any specific recommendations? Being a bit on the larger (but not plus size) I struggle with bottoms that flow over the wobbly bits but are cool, compact and comfortable. I’m pre-planning for my second long-term trip and am trying to avoid mistakes I made the first time :)

I really try to simplify and try each time we travel to take less things. When we fly I am really good about it but when we drive cross country to California every year, it is harder since we have the whole trunk of the car we can fill. We went on a train trip last year from Pennsylvania to California and I really had to be strict about taking the least amount of things. For that trip I packed pretty much like you, Margaret, except I usually take 2 pairs of shoes and wear sneakers to travel. I also take jeans instead of leggings. A dressier darker pair and 2 lighter pairs. I usually do pack a black skirt and a dressier top along with a few colorful tee shirts. I wear a jacket or sweater to travel. Like airplanes, trains are somewhat chilly as well! I always take a facial moisturizer and some makeup. Thanks for this topic, I am anxious to hear what other women do.

Sixty and Me Margaret, we loved it! We had a bedroom in the sleeper car but it did take some getting used to the first night because the train rocks from time to time. We saw some beautiful scenery and spent some time in Portland, Oregon, Northern California, and then took the train down the California coast to see our daughters in Los Angeles and San Diego. We took the train back from San Diego up through the center of the US. We met so many wonderful people and we will definitely do it again. We recently took a short train ride in Essex, Connecticut when we were in New England. We love trains!

One item I always take with me: My hot water bottle. I feel the cold a lot, also that´s the reason why I couldn´t just travel with one warmer cardigan, jacket or pullover, because then I would wear that all the time (unless it would be really hot summer), and would have to wash it after a couple of days and would have nothing to wear but t-shirts, and I would feel cold and uncomfortable. So I need about three warm pullovers or cardigans. plus more trousers than only leggins (if it´s cold I wear leggings under my jeans to keep me warm). So most of the year and in most climates I would need a bigger suitcase, about 12 Kilo.

Hi Margaret, I was going to suggest you to take a look at Arbor Teas (www.arborteas.com). They have loose teas, but their selection and quality is exquisite in my opinion. I especially love their plum oolong, but I have tried other varieties and I have only good things to say about them. No teabags there, but they do sell paper bags that can be used for convenience.
As for today’s topic, I believe your advice is sensible for a few days trip. I’d pick 2 base colors and an accent color for clothing, 2 pairs of shoes and a couple of scarves. It is wise to have 2 pairs of pants and 2 pairs of shoes because if one fails ( a broken zipper for instance or a broken sole), it’s good to have a back up. If it’s a longer trip, I pack only for 5 days and make sure I have a way to do laundry. There is a vloger, Audrey Coyne , who has also great tips for packing. She is young and lovely and has excellent taste in my opinion. Thank you for the great topic!

Both are good however, I make my own version using something from both-just don't be scared to try it...it's fresh, pure and inexpensive!

Maybe this will be a goal :) I usually over-pack, and always envy those people who arrive for the same amount of time with one small carry-on :D To add to your items which are close to my must haves are slipper socks, a small note pad and pen.

Slipper socks is a great recommendation! I love kicking off my shoes and slipping into something comfortable when I get back to the hotel after a hard day's walking.
