I have the official promo video of this track which was shown on the 1982 TOTP repeat. I added missing footage at the start and end for completion however when the video was uploaded it became blocked worldwide. So if you're wondering why you can't see the official 'Golden Brown' video on TH-cam, there's your answer.
The only one pop tune that was a hit in 1982 could be a hit in 1682.
Michael Platter it does have a Medieval feel to it
THAT IS F’IN HILARIOUS DUDE 😂👍🏻
Replace the harpsichord with a piano and you wouldn’t say that. I think its more in line with Dave Brubeck
I think it certainly has a “Baroque” feel , almost like a piece by J.S. Bach. Baroque pop is an actual genre of music.
Or 2022 !?
Never get tired of listening to this beautiful song.
Même chose pour moi ;-)
Everytime just like the last ❤
This is my all-time favourite. Can listen to it a billion times!
My brother just bought me a framed 45 Golden Brown record for my 60th birthday and I don't mind telling you...I cried ....it was the absolute best present ever!!!!
I simply adore Hugh Cornwell ❤ it will take pride of place above my bed so it's the last thing I see at night and the first thing I see in the morning ❤
And if you are reading this Hugh.....I'm available ❤❤❤
Wow the music awesome!!!
I'd have to take it out and play it on that sweet soft vinyl!

i normally don’t say i have a favorite song but the more i think about it this is probably my favorite song ever
yeah... Blissful hopelessness. So addictive, it's scarce to find just a perfect marriage of the tune and lyrics.
Along with George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord, this is probably also my favorite song ever
Fabulous tune...takes me back to those times....but suddenly 40 years and both my Dear Parents are gone..!!..How can that be...??!!??
I remember 1982 the song got to Number One in London but only Number Two nationally.
I remember eating breakfast while listening to this song when I was 9 years old......wow my brain clicked to the next level,..a moment in time I will never forget. Thankyou stranglers🎉
That describes it perfectly. I remember moments like that so distinctly. Growing up in the 80s and listening to radio in the car when my parents were in the shops. Almost an audible click in my head when tracks like The Doors: Riders On The Storm or Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart hit me. Something changed seismically and for good at those moments.

Golden timeless tune, that gave the stranglers a new audience, they had never done a song like this b4 or since. Incredible.❤
Should of been a super group but they were no yes men pity high Cornwall left the band in 1990
You can never get enough of Golden Brown is exactly right. That's what it's about you know, heroin addiction. Brubek himself might have approved.
I am 68 and to this day just like today I bleed the pods in the morning to get enough sap and make my special recipe and when everything is perfect I listen to this song while my family go about their cheery christmas day and then I listen to the cricket and sip a little bubbly. RIP Jet Black, just learned of your sad passing, so much you contributed to this fantastic band, thanks mate.
Rip Dave Greenfield thank you for the awesome keyboard tunes!
My dad and I sung this a lot.. he liked it a whole lot ❤️❤️🙏
As a 16yr old in 1982, this stopped me in my tracks and I thought… ok, there’s far more to music than I first thought. More to everything than just meets the eye.
This and Lori Andersons O Superman sent me on a glorious atypical musical journey.
Haha! Same! Though, I didn’t hear O Superman until Fall of ’84 as a college freshman. Glad to see someone mention Laurie Anderson. You may want to try internet radio site, SomaFM. They have about 40 channels of various music genres… Nothing like Laurie Anderson or The Stranglers, just part of my music journey. Though, their Secret Agent channel should play this song sometime! Cheers from Virginia!
Words are too poor to express this amazing song by this wonderful band !

Daaaam good song. Who's here 2022?
wonderful guitar solo. That final lick lingers in the mind, like a voice in a fond memory.
In his book The Stranglers Song By Song, Hugh Cornwell said that "'Golden Brown' works on two levels. It's about heroin and also about a girl. Essentially the lyrics describe how both provided me with pleasurable times."
The "girl" in question was Cornwell's Mediterranean girlfriend at the time.
or about single malt whisky
Such a beautiful song despite and in light of its’ metaphor ...
Neo-psychedelic baroque masterpieces are few and far between, as are cool dudes named Hugh. Awesome tune.
Close but this track could have been used for the Movie Trainspotting because it's about the same illegal substance, apparently today's generations have either never known about the link or people have forgotten about it. 😂

Listened to this song too much and started to get sick of it. Not listened for ages and now I love it again!
1982 : what a golden year ...
J' adore !!!!!!! Plus qu' une chanson , un voyage ! Un rêve
When I hear this song it teleport’s me back to school and I see my friends and the girls that were in my life the strangles thank you
This is one of the best songs from this era... and for me, there were quite a few of those. What makes it so good is its unusual rhythm, slightly off beat but very cyclical at the same time. Not really a song you could easily dance to, but one you can sway to, and it isn't raucous, either, in a time where songs were getting louder and louder. Even better, my Dad, who kind of hates anything made after 1970, loves this song!
Back in the day I had heard "Skin Deep" on the radio and loved the unusual sound of that band. I bought the album "Aural Sculpture" and to this day is one of my favorite records. I also bought the Greatest Hits CD and this is how I discovered all their Hugh Cornwell era music. Sadly, Hugh left the band (a loss from which despite their longevity, they never really recovered), and Dave Greenfield died. Drummer Jet Black is too old to play anymore, and the only resining member in decent shape because nobody can beat him up is French born JJ who hates the English. Hugh' solo career has been less than mediocre, to be frank. It would have been great if they would have reformed. I would have flown to England to see them.
Great track as are so many tracks from The Stranglers! I was shocked and saddened by the news about Dave Greenfield. The dancers on this video... WT? 😁

Never getting tired listening to Golden Brown. I don´t remember when I heard it the first time, but I´m sure it must have been around 82-83, and can´t figure out according to what. Maybe it´s more like... I first heard it much later, after 2000+. If that´s the case, it just reminds me of how bloody good this track is, because it keeps reminding me of the days back then, early 80s around 82-83, a nice time to think of. But still it´s amazing if I didn´t listen to the song some 40yrs ago, how can it remind me of situations from that time.. I love it, always will. I really have only one more song that I never get tired of, also from that decade. Careless Whisper / George Michael. However that song reminds me of some specific things, which Golden Brown doesn´t. Both songs makes me happy and sad at the same time. It´s the memories and the losses during time, that recalls those feelings. The sad ones. That´s what great music does to us..
They must of hated having to mime this beautiful song. Sharon Bird, I am so sorry you met me but I am not sorry I met you.

There are so many songs from the 80’s that would be in peoples top 10 but this is my favourite from the decade

Breaks my heart that England and the wider west who produced such magic is being lost
The modern England of the post-Elizabethan era from the 17th Century onwards was built on expansion and hasn’t been able to learn to survive without it. Its culture is largely a product of that brief period of global economic dominance and one can’t survive without the other. Civilisations fall prey to the dynastic cycle and fail.
Classic tune. Totally love it.
I've always loved this song....what makes it unique....it that it sounds Elizabethan....
