    I've been growing my baobab for almost 2 years now, I thought it was going to die a couple times but it kept going and it's so nice now. BTW, first tree I ever grew from seed, I only heard later on how difficult they are to grow. Haven't attempted to grow anymore, I have two more seeds, maybe I'll try them too.

      Do you mean you thought it was dead when its leaves turned yellow and dropped? If that's the case, that's the normal cycle and you're supposed to only water it a very little bit or even stop it at that time.

    I have 7 baobabs now growing from 25 seeds. I killed 10 from neglect which had germinated.
    Mine are now 8 months old. I’m on socal. They range in size from 3’ to 4” tall. Some seeds are just stronger I guess. They were raised the first 3 months under led lights indoors. They were moved outdoors in may and in June when the heat came they really took off. The hotter the better I think, to a point. We hit 110 F numerous times. They grew best at that time.
    Now it’s fall. Time to pull them back in to a grow tent inside I think. I’ll try 50,000 Lux minimum. That’s a slightly overcast day here. Full sun is 120,000 Lux

    That's crazy, at the start of May I just cracked open the big nut and picked the seeds out and planted into pots of either coco-coir or regular gardening compost. I took what I thought was only one seed remaining in the giant "nut" that you have left over afterwards and buried that with the rest of the bits to let it compost in the pot with it. Then I put the pots in my greenhouse for the summer and absolutely drowned them about 3 or 4 times. Trying to mimic the deluge and drought kind of environment they would have in Africa. Over the course of two months all of them sprouted and the nut gave me four more sprouts as well. I now have 6 on the go coming into winter.

      You soak seeds for 7 days , scrap their skins in a small spot where you get to the white part ! Then plant each seed in their own pot (2 inches down) ! Water daily , will germinate in 1 to 3 months ! Be patient :-)

      Adele Hill thank for your advice. I got 5 seeds. After viewing some other videos, I float tested the seeds. Found 4 good seeds. I scathed them, soaked them for 3 or4 days and finally planted them in small seedling pots on 1 April 2020. It is more than one month now. No result. I believe our recent prolonged cold weather has its effect. Anyway, I bought a small greenhouse 2 weeks ago and transferred these seed there. Perhaps it would be saved from below 10C temperature each night. We even had snow fall last week. So, I am waiting and waiting for the HOPE of a good weather. Lest’s see....

    • @wasimahmed5941
      @wasimahmed5941 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jarhead Bonsai and Adele Hill. Thanks to both of you for your kind advice. That is encouraging. As of today, I got all 4 of my seeds germinated. So, I got a 100% germination rate.
      Now, the challenge is to take care of them. Any idea? I had planted all seeds in 100% coconut husk. Should I now transfer these into individual small pots with soil? I have taken them back into my house. These are now sitting beside the window where they get bright light but no sun. I already gave them liquid fertilizer 10-15-10. Do I need to do anything more. My biggest concern - how much sun do they need?

    What kind of soil do baobab prefer? I'm assuming slightly acidic. I haven't tried growing them but personally the most difficult trees I've attempted to grow are mangosteen and other garcinias, along with cacao. Also do you know how cold sensitive they are?

    • @jarheadbonsai
      @jarheadbonsai  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello friend!!! I have my Baobab in 1/2 organic perlite strained of fine dust, and 1/2 moisture control potting soil...I add Osmocote plus every 6 months, and use a 10-10-10 every 3 weeks. I keep all of mine indoors year round so I am not sure what cold hardiness level is. They do seem as though they favor lots of sun and warmth. I would make my best guess to keep above 50 degree F. Thanks for stoppinf by Jarhead Bonsai.

      I had success with sanding down the shell until you see white, soaking for 2 days, peeling the black shell...and then wrapped seeds in warm damp paper towel and put in container on seed mat. Once they started to germinate I planted in a well draining soil with lots of perlite. Let me know how you do!!! Cheers from the USA. 🌱🌴😀

  • @KindofaScientist
    @KindofaScientist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you very much! Did you know that you can germinate the seeds in just 3 days? I saw it on another channel and gave it a try. You need to start filing the top of the seed and keep filing until u reach a lighter brown layer. Then you would soak them for 2 days, and now with a knife, you can remove parts of the shell which has become soft now. If the shell was still hard, file further or soak longer in distilled water. You need to remove at least the back of the seeds shell. An alternative will be to file with a sanding disk (keep the seed wet, so it won't overheat; it can take a while) until u start to see a whitish layer appear. Then you stop; that whitish layer should not be filed; next, soak for 48 hours, and using a knife remove parts of the shell that will be super easy to remove. I usually remove the back half only, and then you can germinate them in a sterilized pot and medium in about 3-4 days, but I don't bury them very deep.
