Ackee and saltfish is Jamaica’s national dish. It can be eaten at any time or any day of the week. However, it is traditionally served as a breakfast meal on Saturday and/or Sunday, or on special occasions. Ackee and saltfish are sautéed with boiled or canned ackee, onions, thyme, Scotch Bonnet peppers (optional), tomatoes, red bell pepper (optional), garlic, black pepper and pimiento. It is usually served with a combination of any of these items: boiled yellow yam, fried or roasted breadfruit, boiled or fried dumplings, boiled green bananas and fried plantain. Ackee is Jamaica’s national fruit.

I come from a Haitian family. Haitian food is good, but nothing, and I mean nothing is better than Jamaican food.
Danny. Woy. Ammweyyy. You just play our food. Heck NO. Boo I know it’s a matter of preference. I love Jamaican food too but give credit what it is due. Their oxtail, jerks, ackee, which we DO WELL. however they don’t do some foods like they do. they can’t do any RICE like we do, no griot, lalo, tassot, stew like we do. Boy get your act together. Can’t compare an apple to an orange. Two distinctive fruits in the same family. All love for my other Caribbean neighbors but that’s 💯
Am Caribbean neither hatian or Jamaican , I eat both , and hatian rice is top tier , mouth watering just thinking about it , and you guys blend your raw veggies for seasoning , I love both , but a Hatian restaurant or person has not fail me yet

I had this dish in my friend’s home today and really enjoyed it! Couldn’t help to get a can of ackee on my way home for making the same dish at my home one day . This video is obviously very helpful!

I had some from a jamaican restaurant nearby me this week with boiled dumplings and green bananas. It was bliss to my system and I let go a long satisfied belch afterwards to let go all the gas and stress in my system!

You should try hanging out with Middle Eastern friends and people!
They make it their business to deliberately make loud and long belches you can hear from the other end of the house. And if you do not belch properly after the meal, the host is very offended, and that will cost you their friendship - or worse; be shunned and banned by the community as you didn't show proper due respect to their hospitality.

It's funny, but my Jamaican mother never used thyme and garlic in their recipe. She always said "less is more" (old-time Jamaican cooking) and that the garlic and thyme overpowers the delicate taste of the ackee. Although your dish does look delicious! 🤤👏🏾👏🏾🇯🇲🇬🇧

@davidandjody I agree that everyone has an "authentic" Jamaican Ackee recipe. I feel that it is also down to the good memories in conjures when eating/smelling, etc, a particular recipe, just as well as it being just down to individual taste. For example, some people never cook it with tomatoes, some fill it with tomatoes, etc. The main thing for me is that it's nice that we can share recipes as sometimes we may find that someone else's recipe suits us more than the one we've known. Also, it's lovely to see the younger generation creating their own food memories! 👏🏽👏🏾🙌🏽🙌🏾🫶🏽🫶🏾👌🏽👌🏾🤲🏾🤲🏽💝💝🙏🏽🙏🏽🤗😋😁🇯🇲🇬🇧

I boil my ackee before throwing it in the pan with salt fish just my preference
