How can literally anyone think keeping a HOSPITAL C L E A N is not an important job. Literally someone would die every single day if it wasn't, and a lot of them would be staff.
In the olden days a hospital was one of the DIRTIEST places you could imagine because people hadn't yet discovered germs and the damage they do or how much they spread.
@@BobBob-kr5wr From what you see. You only see him messing with JD, that isn't his entire time there though. And there are several cases where you do see him clean, and probably many more times that you don't.
There are a lot of very touching moments in Scrubs, but that last bit, that's one, that really gets to me. And excellent use of music, "no one knows my name..."
Morgan Stiefvater I know, just being an ass. Even though the creator of this show has confimred that Janitors name is Glenn, I'm not convinced if Dr. Jan Itor was just pulling his leg :p
This episode is in my top 3 favourites. It just captures everything that's amazing about Scrubs: takes a purely comedic figure (which is true btw - the Janitor was only meant to be in episode one, but the creators liked what Neil Flynn did so much that they wrote him into to the rest of the series) and gives even him an episode to himself and gives him an emotional level that makes him more than just a 2D character.
Thank goodness Neil Flynn stayed for more than one episode! I love Dr Jan Itor so much, especially it this episode (definitely one of my favourite episodes with My Old Lady)
Don't forget the speech he gave to Elliot. I don't know why, but it sounds so sad when he says, 'You're the only one here who treats me like a real person."
I was just thinking something a few minutes ago before I got into this video, and it is that since I've been re-watching Scrubs I've noticed The Janitor doesn't have one single weak performance during the show. A brilliantly consistent character.
@@HeatyFrog Actually, the character grew. Initially, he was only going to be in the pilot. Then, they decided to go with figment of imagination, because Bill Lawrence was convinced he'd never get a second season. Only once they got picked up for season two do you see him interacting with other characters.
I love this episode, as it shows how well Scrubs can surprise you and switch the mood from high comedy to heart-tugging drama. I love how they make it seem like the Janitor is bothering Mr. McNair, given that he doesn't respond. And then comes the end where you see that Mr. McNair COULDN'T respond, and would have basically been abandoned ALL DAY if it weren't for the Janitor taking the time to talk to him like he was a real person and not just information on a chart.
That's not something you need to wait to the end to find out. The episode starts with them explaining he has locked-in syndrome but his computer is broken.
The most comical people ARE the most sad. They're the most sensitive, observant, aware of the ugliness in the world in order to joke about it, and that's why they suffer more.

I once met a young woman who had something similar to this. I'm no doctor so i don't know the proper term for it. I talked to her for almost 3 hours just venting until i noticed that the computer for her translator was muted or something. I called the nurse to check on it and once she turned it back on the woman started communicating back to me. It was a very touching conversation. She told me that a lot of people don't feel comfortable talking to her because of the machine and that she was enjoying my nearly 2 hour long rambling before the machine was turned back on. It was a life changing experience for me. It's something i never could've imagined myself doing until that moment. I'm a very shy and introverted person, but talking to her just felt like something we both needed and I'm glad i did.

It’s a great episode bc it shows how in a hospital everyone that a patient interacts with has the ability to uplift them. Plenty of patients will tell you that what helped them get through it wasn’t always the docs or nurses and people that you always think of but the janitor, people that bring the food trays, patient transporters, etc It’s one of the many reasons why this shows how scrubs is the best medical tv show ever made….
Amazing depth to this scene. The writers did splendidly! I really liked the patient saying thank you to let Janitor know that he was needed and that he DID make a difference. A thing we all need to be reminded of once in a while. Wink
that is so sweet and you know what it is right people who work at hospitals they do give a damn about other people and it was very sweet what the janitor did get the guy company in was nice to him it was always there for him in another human being talking to another one
I agree, I think the point is that the most 'insignificant' (please notice the quotation marks) people in our society don't get the respect they deserve.
I'd say it goes a little further than just lack of respect. It's more that the good ones aren't recognized or appreciated for what they do as a person, not just their job. The sort that may not have the most important jobs, but they still to positively affect people, even if they may not be in a social position to do so. Like the janitor going out of his way to befriend a patient that others didn't consider to be in need of that extra help.
Didn't understand the show when i was 13-14 when it was on, fell in love with it when i got older. The Janitor was always a meanie for me and this moment made me like him.
Scrubs is such a great show. I've lost count just how many times I've binge watched the entire series, but I'm pretty sure this is the only real sad moment of Glenn Matthews and it just creeps up on you. Really wasn't expecting the episode to end that way the first time I saw it
HairyHariyama I actually thought that he might be the reason the nurse got with the father of the baby in the first place and with him missing the 2 would have never meet
People always lists their saddest/emotional moments but they never have this one just because it has no special effects or big building up scene's or even because it's not very long. I think this is on par to be one of the best simply because of how well Neil play's his character, just in the same way as how Ken plays Kelso in his most emotional ending. You really feel and appreciate his emotion during this ending scene if you follow the series as much as the true Scrubs fans do
After this show, I wanted to work in a hospital in a non-medical role. I have no interest in the medical field but I liked the thought of being adjacent to it. I got that dream for 7 months through late 2013 and part of 2014. I got to work as a computer support technician. Basically an IT guy supporting computer equipment in the hospital. A lot of my work was dealing with these buggy cart mounted computers that the nurses used to.... do stuff. Some also had drawers where they could store little things that the nurses needed, like tape, straws, gauze pads etc., Doctors probably did stuff too. My favorite part was always when I got to interact with the patients when their TV sets broke. They weren't normal TVs. They were basically computers hooked up to a monitor, connected to a system called "Get Well Network", which had TV channels and hospital services. I loved that job and I wish it weren't just temporary. But support jobs like that and janitorial services are critical to a hospital. Or any business. The place cannot function without the non-medical staff.
“I work in a place that helps people and I guess I felt like I was a part of that. Who cares”. As a hospital janitor man do I relate to that line so badly. Whenever you hear the people talk behind your back and give you that look like your gutter trash for what you do. It really makes you wonder what’s the point. It’s easy to become jaded in my field. Even worse still is when you have a moment of doing something good it’s just brushed off by most of the staff. But it does feel so good when you hear thanks from the staff. Just one compliment from residents or patients goes a long way to helping us get through the shift. And I’m glad to see that Scrubs could show this perspective to people. We work a shitty job. It doesn’t make us shitty people. In fact many of us had big dreams. They just didn’t work out is all.
I've been in healthcare for a while. Anyone who's worked in a hospital knows how vital housekeeping staff are keeping that place running. They're about as important as anyone else in that building, in my opinion.
Fun fact the actor for the janitor didn't actually have lines for almost all his parts. They just put 'the janitor said something funny' in the script and let him do his own thing.
I think deep down, for all his pranks, aggression and mean spiritedness, deep down he really does want to do his part to make the world better in some small way
If the hospital is not clean enough,t here is no amount of good nurses and doctors that could mantain a patient healthy. The cornerstone of the hospital is the cleaning staff. If you read this and work as such in a hospital, you are the most important piece even if you dont see it.
People wonder if Janitor ever knew Mr. McNair thanked him, but I think he somewhat knew. Dr. Cox was acting all... cocky since he "saved the day" with his new laptop, and that all went away when Mr. McNair looked at Janitor with Dr. Cox looking back in confusion and a deflated ego.
It’s incredible how much the world would change if just one person wasn’t in it. One may go through their entire lives never knowing the impact they can have on other people. But if they ever do- It’s worth the wait.
You know, this is fiction, but people like these do exist. I've been in an hospital for 3 weeks last year, my hip joint fucking exploded, and it was unbearable, but there was this one janitor, Ciccio (short for Francesco over here), he'd came in every day to clean the room, and he'd go as slow as possible in my room, so we could chat. He was very hopeful for me, chatting with him was nice, he wasn't a nurse or a doctor but he genuinely cared about patients down with their luck. He was happy when he saw me walk on my two legs when I had to get there again to get my leg checked. Sometimes you don't make the cut for medicine, but you can still make people feel better.
With the amount of dedication The Janitor showed in tormenting JD , I can imagine he actually him putting in as much dedication to cheering up many other patients...🙂
It is truly amazing how this show managed to make every single character likeable. Even the "bad" characters turn out great because you find out they had to play the bad guy as part of the job to keep things going
I've often had this theory that the Janitor is Kelso's son, which is why he gets away with so much and why Kelso tolerates him better than he does anyone else
My theory is, he is actually the leader of the Janitor crew, he is the one keeping them in line and making sure they don't rebel on the entire staff. If the Janitor were gone, they would all rebel and the hospital would no longer be sterile.
Janitor is basically every guy with his job. I work at a school and it is the same thing, people don't give a crap unless they need something from you or you did something wrong. I work with my father on the custodial crew and for the first 5 months of me working there no matter how many times I told the teachers and principals my name they still called me, "Domingo's son". However, once they figured out my name it was every morning I say, "Good morning, how are you today, Mr. or Ms.?" and they either ignore completely or they would give a quick, "Hey" without so much as looking at me. It is when they want something done that they start acting like they are my best friend, same with my father they treat him like an idiot but we just go to work everyday trying our best to make the school the best it can be. Not for the teachers or principal but for the students to learn in a clean and safe environment. A lot of times we are the ones students come to with their problems, I think it is because we just listen and not always teach. All we want is to be seen as genuinely important.
The only thing we really know about the janitor is that he wanted to work at a place that helps people.
luke bryde and his real Name
And that he uses a bunny as a salt n pepper thingy
And he proves his value every day by unfairly torturing JD all day long.
And he was in The Fugitive.
And that he is an avid taxidermist.

That just might be my favorite description of the Janitor ever.

that is so sweet and you know what it is right people who work at hospitals they do give a damn about other people and it was very sweet what the janitor did get the guy company in was nice to him it was always there for him in another human being talking to another one
That was a really nice moment at the end. Shame the Janitor didn't get to hear him say thank you.
Darkstar263 I think he did
+Finrod “Hewer of Caves” Felagund I actually DON'T think Janitor heard Mister McNair. It really adds to the tragedy and weight for me. :) :) :) D: :)
Stranger Danger the janitor smiled
I swear the people who picks songs for this show nailed it. So many songs fit into the scenes so well.
Scrubs is such a great show. I've lost count just how many times I've binge watched the entire series, but I'm pretty sure this is the only real sad moment of Glenn Matthews and it just creeps up on you. Really wasn't expecting the episode to end that way the first time I saw it
This always brings tears to my eyes.
And just when you thought you couldn't cry anymore, you get to the next episode... 😢😢😢😢
One of the only shows that can make me absolutely laugh my head off in the next moment cry. Love it
lmao Janitor got with Jill the sexy nurse? That lucky sod!
i was gonna say she wasnt pregnant in the flashback
dayum!
I like to think Janitor just swapped the nurse's birth control pills with something completely ineffective at contraception. Like breath mints.
HairyHariyama I actually thought that he might be the reason the nurse got with the father of the baby in the first place and with him missing the 2 would have never meet
I think he was just lying, like most of the time he opens his mouth!
@@andrew7taylor 😂
Okay, I missed the "Hey, Jill" joke before but holy shit.
That "Thank you" though :')
People always lists their saddest/emotional moments but they never have this one just because it has no special effects or big building up scene's or even because it's not very long. I think this is on par to be one of the best simply because of how well Neil play's his character, just in the same way as how Ken plays Kelso in his most emotional ending. You really feel and appreciate his emotion during this ending scene if you follow the series as much as the true Scrubs fans do
I used to work as a Hospital Porter ... you are often a nameless and invisible existence
1:12 Did he just admit to knocking up a nurse?
Tears
So heartwarming
They just didn’t work out is all.
i'm sorry sir. I hope you have a good life. Thank you for all the good you do. Love from India
For what it is worth, thank you.
Janitor was the best character on Scrubs.
Me: “hey Mr McNair. Wanna hear the complete history of The Horus Heresy? Ok, but first I gotta tell you about The War in Heaven…”
tthis was the first episode i really saw the janitor as a human being. it's a true great.
I've been in healthcare for a while. Anyone who's worked in a hospital knows how vital housekeeping staff are keeping that place running. They're about as important as anyone else in that building, in my opinion.
Think it's why in the show that the cleaning staff have a pretty strong union.
Fun fact the actor for the janitor didn't actually have lines for almost all his parts. They just put 'the janitor said something funny' in the script and let him do his own thing.
Yes everyone knows. Been told a million times
The amount of entertainment Janitor provided is indeed priceless
I think deep down, for all his pranks, aggression and mean spiritedness, deep down he really does want to do his part to make the world better in some small way
Think Janitor went to law school but didn't pass the bar so he became a Janitor.
My favourite scene ☺ You dont need to be able to talk to communicate with someone.
Thats such a funny way to say he is a dad
If the hospital is not clean enough,t here is no amount of good nurses and doctors that could mantain a patient healthy. The cornerstone of the hospital is the cleaning staff. If you read this and work as such in a hospital, you are the most important piece even if you dont see it.
Man I love this show, chock full of these gem moments that make you think
Janitor wasn't supposed to be a regular character after the pilot but they made him a regular and he had his own character arc.
That puts a warm feeling in my heart🥰
The little Thank you made me tears up
And that he knows when squirrels are afraid. (Its usually when he is around)
He's my favorite character in the show for sure.
Same
Mine too.
Saw this episode yesterday(for the 50th time), great scene this, where he thanks the Janitor
It’s incredible how much the world would change if just one person wasn’t in it. One may go through their entire lives never knowing the impact they can have on other people. But if they ever do-
It’s worth the wait.
He's a good guy, isn't he?
Did the Janitor get Jill pregnant?
YOU HAVE FOUND THE JOKE

With the amount of dedication The Janitor showed in tormenting JD , I can imagine he actually him putting in as much dedication to cheering up many other patients...🙂
As someone who also works as a nonmedical staff in a Hospital, I can totally relate to the Janitor.
This brought a smile to my face.
It is truly amazing how this show managed to make every single character likeable. Even the "bad" characters turn out great because you find out they had to play the bad guy as part of the job to keep things going
Theres a nice instrumental theme in this episode just before 1:04. If anybody knows the name of it please tell me.
I've often had this theory that the Janitor is Kelso's son, which is why he gets away with so much and why Kelso tolerates him better than he does anyone else
Would this be a separate son than Harrison?
@@christopherwall2121 different son same story
My theory is, he is actually the leader of the Janitor crew, he is the one keeping them in line and making sure they don't rebel on the entire staff. If the Janitor were gone, they would all rebel and the hospital would no longer be sterile.
Great song Boston Augustana
"I wasn't talking to you"
I´m not crying! You are!
3 minutes of scrubs better than 90% of tv shows
I almost cried there at the end
I cannot get over how fucking hysterical that drill fork song joke is.
This show had a lot of heart.
"Drill Fork it's a drill and fork!...mostly fork!"
Gets me every time lol
3:10 Dr.Cox looks at his watch wrong how did I never notice this 😂
Scrubs will forever be the best show ever.
Agreed. No other show like it
Surprise cry...
this is one of the best things the janitor has ever done
found it!! the song is boston by augustana
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
That’s kind of nice in its own way.
damn this show was good
Janitor is basically every guy with his job.
Such a touching scene
