A beautiful track off one of the most interesting and haunting albums I've listened to this year. Alison Goldfrapp is without doubt one of the most intriguing musical artistes currently working in the UK. Tales of Us is simply so rich in content..
In the French series Bureau of Legends, I heard this song and I was impressed. I love it

Alison Goldfrapp has always been a true artist. In this industry of over night sensations how great is it to see someone so real,love this song.
I was driving my car to work three days ago and suddenly i listened this song and i had the most emotional and life-changing experience. As a MTF in early transition i felt so represented by this song and automatically started to cry. And then, just at that very moment, someone or something named Annabel and that is the female name that i've been looking for more than a year. Thank you to this song I found my true name, Annabel (I'm sobbing like crazy right now)

The lyrics have secret meanings and double entendres, occasionally, but I think why I enjoy it, is that her singing, is like a whisper: it must be heard over again, or, one must eventually read the lyrics. I have cried making no noise and not moving at all, simply reading, and processing many of their songs. Alison Goldfrapp's music makes me feel compelled or pulled to do things that are good for myself and others.

I bought the entire series on DVD, knowing nothing about it beyond it being sold by Kino Lorber, and a quick Google search saying it was really good and that the director apparently handed off the final episodes to someone else. I'm in the middle of season 1 - really enjoying it

This movie is about a child that was born intersex. They had surgergery and the child became a boy. But in puberty, he realized that he wanted to be a girl, and that's girl's name is Annabel.
thanks for clearing that up. I don't think parents should be allowed to have their kids cut in any way. When that child become a legal adult, it should be their choice then. Kids change their minds a LOT and parents can impose their ideas onto their kids.

Goldfrapp was the first new artist I found through iTunes when it first came out. And Felt Mountain will FOREVER hold a place in my heart, but why Goldfrapp has remained my favorite over all of these years is the beautiful creativity and continual evolution between each album

I'm listening to this and I can't help but think of Leelah. I don't know why but her death struck a chord with me. I read her suicide note and it was probably the most eloquently well written letter I've read. She was so smart, this should have never happened. She should never be forgotten for her parents are refusing to believe she ever existed.

Pedro M I actually was very touched with Leelah's death too. Wrote a poem to honor her memory and have been writing poems of that sort ever since. Here's the one I wrote just after seeing the news:

They can't tell you what the song is really about. Still to think of a child in the situation you describe in comments breaks my heart. If you love your kid PROVE it. Don't expect a human to be perfect we aren't love is what matters most.
I love this song sooo much. It's hauntingly beautiful. I can't stop listening to it. Goldfrapp is one of my favorite musical group. I love all their music but this song just stands out as unique. A beautiful song for all the hermaphrodites out there who were forced to be one or the other but not both. Why can't one be both, why have to choose?
Excuse me now, but Annabel was born Intersex(ual), like me, had surgery and became a boy. But when he grew up, he realized that he wanted to be a girl. And that girl's name is Annabel. Just read the book and see for yourself, written by Cathleen Winter in 2010.
I didn't have surgery as a child, since my parents wanted me to decide when I was old enough. Well, they thought I choosed wrong (to be a girl) But it was My own choice, not my parents or the doctors!!
and now they are finally making it law (in some nations at least, but it is the new recommendation for all doctors) that surgeries CANT be performed until the child is of an age to express their identity, so hopefully those like "Annabel" will not be "stuck" in the wrong gender.
intersex is the same as hermaphrodite? There are so many new terms to label sexuality. I can't keep up. Arguably, it isn't my responsibility to nor any of my 'business'.

Yes true, the story is from a book called Annabel and yes she is an Intersex child but was raised a boy. The song is referencing her need to express her preferred gender. Something that we trans can totally relate to.

+Ayer Haddad not necessarily. could be gender crossed rather then herm. also if so, most herm children born within the last several decades have the decision, as it were, of what gender they are, taken from them. the doctors try to guess (by hormone levels) what the child in theory should be... but that doesnt mean they are right/correct at all. a lot of the time they arent. then again maybe not, as some people are just born cross-wired, as it were.
Sadly, when this happens... for whatever the reason at all (cross/trans gender) few understand and the afflicted are reviled, outcasted and worse.

Yes, though it's more complicated than that. It's based on a book written by Kathleen Winter ('Annabel'), a beautiful and touching story, sad as well, about an intersexual child who was 'forced' to be a boy by preserving the male genitalia and 'hiding' the female genitalia with horrible consequences when s/he reached puberty. This song is dedicated to how s/he wanted to be called and recognised as: Annabel: "Why’ve they could have let you be both Annabel".
For me this song is moving because it reminds me of my gay friends, and many others who did not find it easy to come out. They had to sadly face family and society. Some of them still remain silent. And i am so sorry for them. The video is also moving as you can see a supportive mother, as it should be.

made me cry...I felt sad to think there are and will be many Annabel's not yet born who don't deserve to live in a world like ours with so much ignorance and hatred. There is so much we still don't understand about human sexuality and our doctors and psychiatrists are not even trying to understand it. Why is it taking so fucking long? Why can we prove once and for all that sexuality is not binary but a spectrum? Many people whose sexual orientation are not heterosexual are being bullied, demeaned, and killed. By proving scientifically that this spectrum exist we can, once and for all, tell those who hate and discriminate to shut the fuck up. No matter if we are gay or straight, of any race or sexual orientation, we are first and foremost HUMAN who just so HAPPENS to be of a given race or sexual orientation. I believe Annabel represents one of many.
I completely lost it. It was over for me at that point.

What does anything in that video have to do with being a pedophile? or even being gay? You're going to stop listening to music you love because they made a video about a child struggling with their gender identity? Sad and extremely judgmental on your part. You don't even have to believe that being gay is ok or that people are born cross-gender...FACT is that intersex people exist and so do gay people and they go through a very difficult life sometimes in coming to terms with their identity.
