    If Beldam hadn't been so horrible to poor Vivian, would that mean Vivian wouldn't have left her sisters and joined Mario in Chapter 4?

      I like to headcanon it as she already hated being a villain even without her sisters bullying, but that and Mario helped her choose to help Mario instead

    I wrote a long-ass comment defending the backtracking in Chapter 4 once, if anyone's interested:
    The backtracking in Chapter 4 of TTYD wasn't all just padding. It had significance to the chapter's narrative! So removing ALL of it via something like a warp pipe shortcut would be doing the story a disservice!
    I know what you're thinking, how does running around change the story in any way?
    Wouldn't the story be the same if you could just warp directly to the next story beat?
    Well, let me explain:
    Almost every trip between Twilight Town and the Steeple has a point to it.
    The first trip introduces the area and its enemies and shows you what it's like to fight them normally. It's also just long enough and complex enough to make it somewhat believable that the chapter is already over after you fight the boss for the first time.
    The second trip shows you how horrible it is to fight these same enemies now that your partners are gone. You really feel left alone in this creepy and hostile place.
    The third trip shows you how great it is to have a partner again. Not only does having another damage dealer help out a ton, but Vivian's special ability even lets you completely dodge the enemies' supercharged moves, which you couldn't before.
    Now, you could argue the fourth trip changes the context once again, since that time you know the villain's secret, so it builds up anticipation to finally take the fiend down properly, but at that point I would be fine with the game unlocking a shortcut.
    They'd just have to put the switch for it in the parrot's room, so you don't abuse it earlier and rob yourself of the experience.
    As for the fifth trip, I don't have an excuse for that one. You already know you can fight the guy now, so it's just annoying. My guess is they really wanted to make the final battle of the chapter take place in the tower of the creepy steeple, rather than some random road. Which is fair enough and if we had the shortcut I'd be fine with it.
    So yeah, in short, this backtracking is there to make you feel what Mario is going through, rather than just showing it to you.
    For movies they say "Show, don't tell." For games they say "Play, don't show." This is one of those times, so I think it deserves some praise.
    I could imagine this leaving a big impact on a lot of players on their first playthrough, whether they realize it or not. Instead everyone just complains about it, seemingly missing the point.
    Now, the general white backtracking on the other hand, that's literally just a joke at the player's expense. I find it funny, but I can 100% understand it if everyone else hates it.

    • @TheRedGuy
      @TheRedGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Good points! If it unlocked a shortcut for the last 2 trips that would help a lot without removing the point of it.

      though i agree that chapter 4 is nowhere near as bad as everyone makes it out to be and i can acknowledge the narrative reason for the backtracking that you point out, it is also safe to say they overdo it. Yes, showing the player the importance of partners to mario's survivability is a good validation for the backtracking, but the message can be given more clearly in other ways that are less tedious to the player.
      Here is a hypothetical example that removes backtracking from the equation (or at the very least reduces it): after dooplis steals your identity and the twist is revealed, the player is thrown into a gauntlet in waves similar to the glitz pit. After successfully ending the gauntlet, the player finds vivian, either by taking a shortcut back to town or by moving the vivian encounter to the base of creepy steeple. Once the alliance is formed, reinforcements from the last gauntlet show up, but with the new partner, the fights are easier (which can be reinforced by "cheating" in favor of the player in the scenario). Now, mario and vivian have to explore a new part of creepy steeple to find dooplis' secret, and then confront dooplis. Now that the mechanical structure is established, lets brainstorm a story edit to fit the new structure. Leaving the top of the tower with his identity stolen, shadow mario runs into dooplis' allies who are trying to protect his identity stealing plan. Mario refuses to go down without a fight, but is outmatched and outnumbered in the resulting fight and is taken to a basement dungeon in creepy steeple. When mario awakens, he meets vivian, who for simplicity's sake lost the superbomb near creepy steeple instead, and after a similar scene as to what is in the base game, vivian decides to help mario escape and track down his missing identity. Before the duo can get far, some guards show up and vivian shows off her ability to hide. While hiding in the shadow realm, the duo overhears that dooplis (without saying his name) has a secret behind his powers, and realizing that this is the best opportunity the duo is going to get, they leave their hiding spot and confront the prison guards to get more information. One scripted fight later and the duo now begin searching the previously unknown underground dungeon of creepy steeple, with some random fights along the way. Upon finding out the secret, they hear that dooplis is returning to check on his prisoner, and the duo confronts him now armed with the knowledge of his secret. With dooplis' secret revealed, he retreats back to the top of creepy steeple. Now the duo is at the exit to the underground part of creepy steeple (where the confrontation happened), and the story gets back on track with what we already know from the base game. With this scenario, the only backtracking involved is leaving and getting back to the top of creepy steeple, with an extra dungeon in the process to hide the miniscule amount of backtracking.
      The big problem with the story validation for the backtracking is the obvious nature of it. Most seasoned "gamers" already know the implication of no partners at that point in the game, so the game needs not show just how much harder the battles are. Even when getting a new partner, even the benefits the partner provides get overshadowed by feeling of "incomplete" powers, so the player will STILL avoid any unnecessary fights. I cant deny the benefits of the backtracking narratively, but the metacontextual implications of gameplay contradict it.

      I've finally gotten to playing this game and having recently beaten chapter 4, I feel like it's too short. Perhaps it's just me avoiding enemy encounters because I know how long they'll take but I only had a problem with the 5th time around. Even then, I feel like it built my aggression toward Doopliss and made me wanna beat him up even more when I got to fight him. Overall though my biggest issue with the chapter is it just felt too short for me. After how long and climactic the last chapter was, I just wish there were some more unique areas to explore. I wished there were more new areas once getting Vivian since there was only one available. Otherwise, I loved this chapter and I thought it was a popular one.

      Hard agree. Chapter 4 has a perfect story-driven purpose for it, and it isn't even that bad anyway. I was having a good time playing the game and barely noticed/didn't care. I minded it more when I was a very young kid with less appreciation for the game - I will give you that.
      People thinking chapter 5 is "backtracking" in the first place is hilarious to me. You literally run through a 3 minute area a couple times, lmao. Oh nooo, not a couple extra enemy fights in an rpg!!! :(((((
      Any other remotely considerable instances of backtracking are entirely optional, so don't do them if they make you seethe that much.
      General White is hilarious and I give the devs credit for playfully dabbing on players like that. Overall, if you think this game is "filled with backtracking" in the first place, I recommend you stop playing RPGs and go find a platformer. It's barely an issue.

    Paper Mario TTYD is one of the best Christmas gifts I ever received. I first played it a couple years back and just couldn’t put it down, I’ve always adored the original (still a fantastic adventure) but the second one is just bigger and better. It’s truly one of the best games I’ve ever got to play and always look forward to my next playthrough.

    Something nice this game does is, there's actually a way to learn the timing for all the Stylish moves! The roaming salesman that appears in Rogueport will occasionally sell a Badge that looks like an orange hand pointing up, and while you have that Badge equipped, every attack will have a "!" appear that shows when you perform the Stylish command. Once you've committed those commands to memory, you never really need to wear the Badge again, but it's definitely a fun badge to learn about and from!

    In chapter 4, I personally think that the first outing to the Creepy Steeple and trek back to town after losing your body are very important, as it kinda shows how Mario does really depend on his partners for a lot, and the best way to show this was to compare the two times you went through Twilight Trail, and how much harder the second time is compared to the first. What I would have done, then, is have a shortcut to Creepy Steeple that you can only pass by using Vivian's partner ability, like the sliding door in the Well. That way the two important trips through Twilight Trail are kept intact, while the redundant latter three are eliminated. I wouldn't have the shortcut be necessary, but the player would probably figure it out once they figured out how the door in the well works.

    Honestly I would argue Flurrie has motivation. Flurrie is one of my favorite characters. She's a retired theatre actress who is currently on a hiatus, but during the journey it was exactly that same amount of motivation she needed to inspire her career again. I do find Flurrie relatable because this could be said for someone who's maybe on a hiatus in some point of their life, depending on reasons if you have a career that's involved it can be a really touch situation, plus having the right motivation could elevate or inspire you to expand or even find new heights in said career.
    I mean during the ending wrap up we seen Flurrie in her actress mode again retelling the events of the game through a play of some sorts, the right thing she needed to restart her career. Even Doopliss joins her as well. And while Yoshi may not have much background I think its interesting how Mario is technically his adopted dad of some sorts. Plus his dialogue has that high energy snarky adolescent personality.
    Even Ms Mowz even her profession is dark compared to the others being an actual thief and her wrap up implies she goes around the world to steal things. With her jumping off buildings and such. I'd say Bow, Goombario and Lakilester are the only real parnters with main personalities. Bow being most involved with her chapter and Goombario providing different dialogues with his overfield tattle, which he can react to different situations with. It's also worth noting Kooper does become an explorer at the end with Kolorado. There's also the mail in Toad Town from various NPCs associated with your partners as to give them more background involving them having lives. (Watt having a mother, Sushie being a mother/grandmother, Bombette's obsessive ex boyfriend who you can have her interact with, Goombario having a family etc.)

    • @hpswagcraft
      @hpswagcraft 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ms. Mowz is a queen fr. I believe she's the Mario universe's Lara Croft.
      She doesn't deal a lot of damage in battle, but stealing items for you is based and she was definitely one of the cooler characters in the game when I was a kid!
      ...Personality and enigmatic-wise, anyway. They didn't really give much to her character, but the mysteriousness about her always made me think she was chill. She does suck in battle minus the amusement I get from stealing items with her, though. lmfao
      They don't really give a lot to her character, but I choose to believe she's living a totally alternate life where she's a female Indiana Jones/Colorado (but she's a total badass) somewhere.

    what I always found odd about TTYD's backtracking problem is people always complained about chapters 4 and 7(esp 7), which's very valid, yet what really surprises me no one's complained a bit more about chapter 2's great tree section.
    since the great tree in chapter 2 can deff potentially have more backtracking as it can be easy to get lost in or not knowing where to go.
    most interestingly, chapter 2 has a pretty neat and unique soft-lock.
    if you wait the bomb timer out, one can make the timer can go to 0 right before Lord Crump actually presses the button to stop the timer, essentially soft-locking the whole game
    what I love most about TTYD is deff the unique instant game-over situations, like the spike ceiling from ch. 1, bomb from ch 2. Ghost T. from ch. 6, and ch. 8's joining the Shadow Queen. its also the first time mario can die in the overworld via hazards.
    the strangest part bout dying in the overworld via hazard like water or spikes, is that life-shrooms don't work. which I've always been of the belief Life-shrooms should work in the overworld, but I guess it makes sense a life-shroom's battle-only.
    I also recall there being a unique game-over situation with the dark bones in ch. 8 before the fight, where you can actually get dragged under the floor into the shadows by the dry bones, causing a game-over, the partners even mention they're being dragged down. this one's extremely obscure but there's deff still a video of that one out there on youtube.
    TTYD really laid the groundwork for the game over scenarios of future paper marios like super paper mario, but especially color splash's unique instant-game over scenarios and I've really appreciated those
    I also really love Doopliss's fight in ch 4(next to Macho Grubba in ch. 3.). its very creative w/an amazing boss theme, but man the wiki really doesn't list the fact Ch. 4 Doopliss can Spin-Jump in that fight and only that fight, which's the most unique part.
    that specific attack shows how he fully stole mario's body-
    and in ch. 8, Doopliss very strangely actually loses the ability to spin jump or hammer(yet he can multi-bonk as goombella), which's a very neat detail.

    Can Vivian hit an enemy potentially an infinite amount per turn - no
    Can she provide a shield - nope
    Can she heal herself while also dealing piercing damage - no
    But she can deal piercing damage to all enemies on screen at one while also setting them on fire (fire damage is piercing damage except the enemy has fire immunity, and fire also deals extra damage to ice enemies)
    Even her standard attack sets the opponent on fire, which can deal damage, even if the opponent turns invisible/transparent afterwards.
    But yeah... Veil is just ok and her kiss move is pretty useless.
    She is very good... But not in all cases.

    Minor things but I though it would be useful to mention for anyone wanting to pick up the game, Koops’ shell slam ignores defense and deals 6 damage as opposed to 5, making it great for sweeping ground enemies with high defense, but I agree that Vivian’s fiery jinx still outclasses it because hers also ignores defense and burns all enemies. However, Koops is the ONLY character that can safely deal with ALL enemies that deal damage on contact; i.e bristles, embers, all spiked enemies, and all puffs, and he only needs his base move (you’ll need to use shell slam on Dark bristles though) However, his base attack doesn’t ignore defense and only deals 5 damage. Also, puffs have the issue of sometimes changing elevation, making his use against them limited. If you don’t have an issue with using FP up the ass, he still is outclassed by bobbery and Vivian. I would argue that people underestimate his shell shield though, guaranteed damage absorption is pretty op at max level. I think his greatest strengths are that he’s the only character with ANY defense whatsoever, his FP usage is minimal, and he’s great for dealing with enemies that can’t be touched or even gotten close to. He shines really well against bristles because of his ability to negate the bristles’ extending spikes and is really useful against embers, though not as useful as bobbery specifically. Plus, power shell is a really cheap ground enemy sweeping move that works well against foes with no defense.

    • @TheRedGuy
      @TheRedGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't realize Shell Slam ignored defense when I made this. Afterwards when talking to a friend while watching him playing the game we found out that it did, and that kinda bumps Koops up quite a bit for me.

    • @hpswagcraft
      @hpswagcraft ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd like it if some did, but I think it'd actually better if not all of them do it. Having Cortez just happen to have the crystal star and not really give a shit is golden. Every single boss using the crystal star would be pretty cool, but it might come off a little gimmicky, in my opinion.
      Especially knowing Intelligent Systems and their knack for gimmicky cringe bullshit lately. Please god, don't give them this idea. They'll make the next game composed entirely of ONLY bosses with crystal stars that take 25 seconds to defeat with a certain ability.
      It's nice to sprinkle that stuff into a game with already deep and fulfilling gameplay, and it totally could be used to beef up the boss fights and make the boss fights/story even deeper, but I'm pretty sure they'd just cling to that one single "bosses have scary crystal stars, oooo!" idea and depend on it for the entirety of the gameplay, and focus on nothing else (other than perhaps more aforementioned gimmicky bullshit).

    • @CrumbleKoek
      @CrumbleKoek ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hpswagcraft I don't think they mean using the Crystal stars for gimmicks, I mean like, showing that the crystal stars have some kinda power that makes the wielder want to keep them. Like, imagine if Dupliss' transformation powers were amplified because of the crystal star, and once he loses his crystal star, he teams up with the shadow sirens because he wants to return to his former glory that the crystal star provided him, and the Shadow Sirens promised him that he'd get that, if he helps to bring the Queen back.
      And imagine if Lord Crump being able to take over the Boggly Woods so quickly was because of the Crystal star! Like, they used it's power.
      Imagine if the reason why the X-Nauts' fortress ends up exploding is actually because the Crystal Star was an important and powerful relic that powered their moon base?
      Obviously not every chapter needs to be like this, Chapters 5 and 6 wouldn't benifit from this, but for chapters 2, 3 and 4 it could've been used to increase the stakes, and show WHY these Crystal stars are so sought after. Hell, imagine if the reason why Hooktail guards the crystal Star, is to stop anyone from using it's power for nefarious purposes.
      Again, it's clear that the Crystal stars have some kinda crazy power, and this power could've been used to raise the stakes and show why you need to round them up, because in the wrong hands they can be weapons of evil.
      Bug Fables (the indie Paper Mario succesor) imo does a much better job at showing the importance of it's McGuffins, and shows how the McGuffins being powerful relics doesn't detract from the story or gameplay in any way, it only adds to it, and adds to the stakes.

    one thing i slightly prefer about 64 over ttyd, is a very minor one, but it's largely due to the fact that you get the jump upgrades before the hammer upgrades, which sort of devalues the hammer, since more often than not, the hammer is less useful, especially if you have power plus badges. having the hammer upgrade appear before the jump upgrade makes it so that you have a slight bit more reason to use the hammer over the jump for a short period of time.

    • @TheRedGuy
      @TheRedGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hammer is still good against defense, and I usually always have power smash on so I still get use out of it even with power pluses making the jump over powered.

    Overwhelmingly this has taken my top spot for favorite video you made thus far, you again made a personally definitive review on one of my favorite games, this personally is the definitive TTYD review. Theres so much I wanna say, but you covered it all about how I would want to say it. For instance, I agree, I LOVED chapter 2 so much! The atmosphere alone brings it as one of my favorite chapters, 3 ofcourse is my favorite, I didnt even know people had a disdain toward chap 4 but I can sorta see where there coming from, but yeah I agree it doesnt really seem like an issue that at all would impede mucj enjoyment from the game personally. The only major gripe I had with the game was the end quest of finding the general but even then I really wasnt bothered or offended or anything, I honestly just found it funny he was at the freakin base the whole time. Overall this games concepts, ideas, atmosphere, music, diolog, story, gameplay, etc make it personally one of the greatest video games of all time, TTYD has for the most part consistantly been in my top 5 games of all time, I mean you just about perfectly articulated WHY I love it so, may it recieve he remake many of us have been yearning for! Again, another home run red!

    With how you like to use superguards, you could try playing with badges that give even more attack only when you are in peril (aka at 1 HP) and players that are really good at timing can use them to do high amounts of damage. Also if you are doing it with your partner and don’t want to find a way to bring back down the partner’s HP to 1 then have them swap out before ending a battle that will cause you to level up. The heal for HP only works on the active partner and not all.

    As someone who just started playing Paper Mario and is at 28 hours and just completed the first two chapters and is on chapter 3, I mostly love the game. I used to play the Super Nintendo when I was a wee lad I primarily play the Playstation 2 or PlayStation consoles. The first Gamecube game I played was Super Mario Sunshine and I love that Mario game to death even though I saw its flaws. I recently acquired a brand new copy of Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door. And as a guy who used to play turn based RPGs like Xeno Saga, Final Fantasy 7, and other RPG similar to Kingdom Hearts, I actually think Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door is the best in terms of a turn-based combat system that engages the player while also keeping the game moving. I haven't had a fight yet that just turned into just using the strongest attack and whacking the enemy over and over. It's always something different and sometimes using the strongest attack isn't always the best option. As someone who has never played this game before in my entire life playing it now with no Nostalgia goggles or any idea what to expect I can safely say I do genuinely think it is a great game and maybe the best turn-based system I have ever played in a video game. The back tracking is starting to show its ugly head and it does get tedious at times, mostly when I'm limited on time or I only have like an hour or two to play. But I do notice the attempts at helping ease the back tracking with so many collectibles, secrets, and otherwise interesting things to see and do in the world. And once you figure out how they hide these Collectibles finding them is actually pretty fun, guessing where they might hide them and then affirming your guess by actually finding them there. So the backtracking so far hasn't really made me feel like it's just two tedious. As for the partners I haven't collected them all I've gotten Yoshi, the Goomba girl, the Koopa, and Madame flurry. And I love how genuinely the partners play completely differently. And each have their own weaknesses and strength to how they play. Final Fantasy 7 had that issue where after a couple dozen hours of playing almost any party member in the game could annihilate pretty much any enemy in any way all by themselves. It gave the sense of being overpowered in the end game but it also made battles feel boring and dull. Here I never experienced that, has every enemy has a strength and a weakness in every partner is either bad, all right, or really good against every enemy. Not to say that you can't use one partner for the majority of the game as I prefer coops just because I prefer his defensive and offensive abilities. However coops has a big weakness that if anything jumps on him just like all the other Koopa Troopers he falls down and becomes completely unusable. Meaning there's some strategy when I use him as I have to understand what enemies can Bonk and what enemies are flying. And with the badge system similar to Kingdom Hearts point system, you can really play Mario however you want to as well as the partner. So I've set up Mario and Koopa so that they have massive defense and Mario has a few ways to deal with enemies both ground and flying. It just really is exciting to be able to use different partners and different setups at any point in the time you play the game and see the effects of using different partners and setups. For me the story is pretty good and only really becomes tedious at certain specific points so far. The biggest offender for me personally was the tree with the punies, as the back tracking is really apparent when you have to make them follow you. It wasn't that bad up until the last cage, where I freed 99 punies but two got permanently Stuck Inside the Cage. It took 2 hours of trying to manipulate their AI and forcing the punies Down the Hatch. Other than that I don't mind the backtracking except the back tracking if you want to upgrade characters or spend your star shards on badges in rogueport during a chapter. The environments keep the back tracking interesting as there's so many secrets in little areas that you kind of have to use your brain to really figure out. And I love how organically the game keeps you from getting lost. Rogue Port itself Maybe my favorite Hub area in any RPG. The last game that really hooked me in the gameplay Department was Ratchet & Clank going Commando. And the last game to hook me in the story Department was Metal Gear Solid 2 during my first playthrough. The Thousand-Year Door really is a good game and a very good RPG. The backtracking does suck and if you're not paying attention to the environment and the little hints that the NPCs drop every now and then, you can easily get lost. But the two strongest things that keep me interested is the collecting and combat, something that turn based games have difficulty keeping interesting for a long amount of time. The difficulty is just right as well, as many old school turn based games would often up the difficulty randomly at certain points, making some battles feel way too annoying or making the player feel like they need to grind levels to be able to progress and still have fun during said combat. And I haven't beaten the game yet but I'm feeling like the late game is going to be so much fun as I'm still finding new mechanics and some in-game areas that I didn't even know were there if I hadn't been exploring, and the Thousand Year Door does a tremendously good job at making you want to explore the world. If it wasn't for the tremendously Fun World to explore I probably would hate the back tracking so much that it wouldn't impede my enjoyment of the main game. But I understand why they may have done this and design the game this way. This is the best and most precise review I have found on TH-cam discussing the entire core of the game, and while the Thousand Year Door may not be the perfect game, it really is a good RPG at its core. Great video on a really solid Mario game.

    Man oh man - normally I wouldn't set aside two hours to listen through a feature-length documentary 'review' of a video game, but considering that this is one of my favorite video games ever, I decided to make it work.
    I'm not really sure who these gargantuan reviews are for - generally a review is for someone who needs to be sold on something, but it's pretty clear that this video is made with people having already beaten the game in mind. Then, why does it cover things we all know, like the movesets of each partner? But as long as it is, this is as in-depth coverage can get on what could be one of the best RPGs ever.
    Have you played the other Mario RPGs? They're all very involved despite using turn-based combat. Every one has offensive and defensive commands based on timing button commands. While superguards are specific to this game, every Mario & Luigi RPG still lets you counter attacks and a skilled enough player can completely avoid all damage.

    • @TheRedGuy
      @TheRedGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I guess you could consider these reviews to be an "analysis" of everything the games have to offer more so than just a standard review. Review and analysis tend to be used interchangeably so I wasn't too sure what to call them at first, I mostly call them reviews because "Red Review" is catchier than "Red Analysis". The purpose is to break everything down and explain what works and what doesn't. I go over all the partners' moves so I can better explain the overall balance, and even if you've played it before that doesn't mean you know everything about it. I don't know the extent of your knowledge of the game, but was there anything about the partners you didn't know before this video? A lot of people claim Flurrie is useless, but I was able to make a counterpoint by explaining her moves and how they work. It's for people who want a deeper understanding of the game in question. I make a recommendation at the end for those who might not have played the game but still watch anyways, I tend to watch these kinds of videos on games I've never played because I find them interesting.
      Besides the Paper Mario games the only other Mario rpg I've played was Partners in Time. I liked it well enough but I prefer the TTYD style. Also I'm not a fan of handhelds as petty as that may sound. It has been quite awhile since I last played it so maybe I need to replay it, plus I hear that's like the worst one so perhaps I should give the other ones a go at some point.

    So I just finished watching both of your Paper Mario reviews and....... Wow! Talk about making videos where not a single second feels lazy in any particular way. Detailed, informative, delivering your opinion near flawlessly, etc. I'm not exaggerating, I really respect the amount of effort put into both videos, and they were entertaining as a result.
    Your experience with TTYD, and how it affected your thoughts on 64 is a similar experience I had only a little different. I can't remember how old I was, but I was about 7, maybe 8 years old. I once saw Paper Mario on GameCube in GAME, and I asked my mum if I could get it for my birthday (7 or 8). I got the game and I started playing it after school. My first playthrough was humiliating in retrospect, but understandable. At that point, I never played any RPGs, and I expected this to be some kind of 2D Mario platformer. I loved Mario, and anything that had Mario on the case would make me go "I want it". I was confused, I didn't know what I was supposed to be doing. I looked at the screen and saw characters walking and I thought to myself "is this maybe a racing game?" I kept falling into the water to the right, thinking that I must be doing something wrong. "Why is this so hard?" I thought to myself. I then walked to the left and started moving up and then BAM! Now I understood what to do. It's hilarious in retrospect, so funny that I might do a video someday replicating the exact experience I had when I first played it.
    It was also the first time I remember using a guide. There were times where I would get stuck and was wondering what I needed to do. The most infamous one to me was when I was trying to solve a puzzle relevant to Doopliss' name. I didn't know what I had to do to the point where I was even crying that I couldn't get any further. It was embarrassing especially when the game was giving me obvious clues on what to do especially with Vivian. Eventually, I figured out what I was supposed to do and I managed to get through Chapter 4. I got stuck again at Chapter 6 to the point where I restarted the entire game. Long story short, I was a really weird kid growing up.
    I did beat the game thankfully especially with some help from one of my brothers. I even beaten it multiple times, did all of the troublecentre missions, did the Pit of 100 trials. I've practically beaten the entire game. Still one of my favourite games to play, and my favourite RPG in general.
    Later on I got Super Paper Mario, which I enjoyed in spite of how different it was. Eventually I did get to play the first game on the virtual console. It was a very enjoyable game, but I did miss abilities like the superguard, and I disliked the level cap at 27. Great game, but I'll always prefer TTYD.

      Thanks man! Interesting first experience lol. We all have times when trying something new and just suck big time at it, especially as a kid. Partners in Time is the only Mario and Luigi game I've played, and in my first playthrough at a certain point I ignored all enemies and only fought the bosses. Needless to say, I was super under leveled to the point I would get 1 shot by every attack.

    You should check out the Mario and Luigi series more. You'd mentioned you played Partners in Time (which is coincidentally my favorite in the series) but the first three games specifically are all quite good. Considering you like action commands, I think you could find a lot of fun with their combat systems. Much more variety than Paper Mario offers (though don't get me wrong, 64 and the Thousand Year Door are two of my all time favorite games regardless). It'd be cool to see you cover that series in lengthy retrospectives like these Paper Mario videos, which are great.

    Part 2: I personally don't mind the Pit, really I never got attributing one's on impatience with criticism, as it boils down to being impatient rather than a problem. I like doing the pit early game, even multiple times. It's a really fun challenge, especially for challenge runs. Your critique of the trouble center was pretty noteworthy though. I also never liked the "linear = bad" claim as it just rigs out the word linear to the point it becomes a buzzword, though I won't lie and say 64 has far superior level design than TTYD. Though I think combat matters to me most when it comes to these games, as me I enjoyed the combat.
    I also didn't mind the bosses healing themselves in either game. In 64 it was mostly limited to Bowser and Crystal King, however Crystal King could only do it twice in the fight, while Bowser can only do it three times. Huff N Puff can heal as long as it has Ruff Puffs, but you can negate this by limiting the amount so that he heals less and outdamage what he heals, or just spam screen attacks/items. It's also worth noting with Lava Pirahana it's also weak to Ice Power badge and Chill Out trivalizes it offensively, but given the option you don't have to use any of those options to fight it, you can simply choose not to use those items.
    Even with Tubba's Heart you don't have to use Outta Sight either, depending on HP manipulation and proper setup. You also don't have to use the badge against Hooktail either.
    I also agree I think the Chapter 4 critique is overblown, if still existent. General White still sucks tho. When it comes to Superguards there are only 3 moves that can't be superguarded. Shadow Queen's Hand Drag (the move where she drags you under) Marilyn's Lightning and Gloomtail/Bonetail's bite, otherwise every other move can be superguarded.

    • @TheRedGuy
      @TheRedGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the pit, I just don't like going down it multiple times. And yeah while I prefer games to be more open, linear is not inherently a bad thing. I actually didn't know the Crystal King and Bowser had a limit to how much they could heal before making that review, does Bonetail also have a limit?

    Hey again Red! I was only a few minutes into the review when I posted my first comment, but now I've finished the whole thing. I've got to say, while your takes aren't especially hot or cold in this video, I really love what you've done here. Most reviewers who say "watch my old video" don't offer too much context, but here you've brought enough to satisfy my curiosity without forcing me to watch the last review (which I plan to do as soon as I hit "comment"). I really LOVED the way you talked about the partners, showing how TTYD improved on the development of the characters and plot threads within the chapters. It's succint, entertaining, and very well-spoken; your voice-over is fantastic. You've found a sublime balance between dramatic and deadpan. The only real criticism I can give is to get a higher quality microphone. It sounds like you're talking into a headset; and although that's somewhat likely and perfectly acceptable, if I were to suggest your next investment? A higher quality studio mic would be the choice.
    Although, I must admit, you glossed over the level design. Most of TTYD is... hallways.
    And I know this is a huge nitpick to most youtubers, but I adore your management of tenses. So many content creators say "would be" and other similar phrases that don't make sense within their own sentences. I'm no expert in syntax but your script feels more natural than most others.
    All in all, 10/10 content, 8/10 production because of the mic. But you could be talking into a pile of rocks and I'd still watch every video. I'm stoked to binge your entire channel!

    Flurrie's not useless, she may have 5 HP less than Bobbery.
    But her Lip Lock move, makes her by far the best tank in the game.
    And Gale Force works surprisingly well even in late game... At least against any airborne enemies.
    Koops is the most stylish of all Partners - in fact he has at least TWO stylish moves for everyone of his moves, which makes him the best choice if you are looking for better star power management.
    Goombella is actually pretty powerful on her own esp against single target, the only downside being that she can't attack safely.
    But her ultra move makes her even better, because anything she can't do, Mario probably can.
    Bobbery has high HP and his attacks have explosion property, which is the best property, there are many enemies that are weak to it in some way (Clefts and surprisingly Lava Bubbles etc)
    But he has high FP cost.
    Yoshi has crazy potential combined with the Charge P Badge.
    And his moves are generally solid.
    Vivian has better damage to FP Ratio (6FP for 5dmg) than Bobbery
    And the burning status can still damage enemies that turn invisible.
    But otherwise the fire property is slightly inferior to explosion.
    There are less weaknesses to it and more immunities.
    Ms Mowz... Well, she's ok.
    She's only good if you want to farm badges or items.
    Her healing kiss is neat though.
    It's pretty balanced I'd say.
    Much more than in PM64.

      Since making this video, talking with friends, and doing more experimenting, I've come to the conclusion that Flurrie is one of the best partners, and yeah she is the best tank. Also I undersold Koops a bit since I didn't realize his shell slam move pierces defense.

    Red you have in My honest opinion the best Paper Mario TTYD review I have ever seen on TH-cam. I to struggled with Paper Mario the first time I played it but for a different reason. You see I have Autism and it was way more pronounced when I was younger this manifested in my being easily distracted and not fully understanding certain things which made me get stuck on the prologue's paper plane segment. But as I got older and My Autism lessened I got better at video games in general and managed to finally get to Chapter 1 and that's when I really started to enjoy it. I got back to the Game a couple years back and I beat it a couple of times and even did my own Voice acting for the characters when I read their Dialogue. In particular I did a bit of a Mark Hamill impression for Sir Grodus because that's who I'd think would voice him if this game ever got voice acting. But anyways I love how you conducted this review and I agree with many of your points so Keep up the goodwork. 👍👍

    As a somewhat veteran player myself I enjoyed your extensive review of this game. I think a lot of your points had a lot of analysis and your views on the partners were good as well (it's finally nice to see someone actually cite the positive attributes of Flurrie and don't write her off as "useless" when they don't bother to actually learn her utility, Gale Force and Lip Lock are great moves! It makes Flurrie the best defensive partner in the game.)
    If I had some critiques though. You also didn't account for Yoshi having the best total damage because with badge stacking you can negate his defense weakness minus certain enemy types. Not to mention both Yoshi and Goombella are the best Peril?Danger partners (alongside Koops) Bobbery's Bob-Ombast, while useful is too costly when Koops and Vivian can do the same thing for less FP cost, not to mention it's affected by defense. Stampede and Fiery Jinx are better screen nukes. Bobbery can't pierce defense when Koops can for Shell Slam, making that FP cost problematic when facing enemies with defense. Even Bomb Squad is affected by this and can't be stacked with buffs. So when it comes to offense Koops is better than Bobbery.
    It's also nice seeing someone debunking the "Vivian's overpowered" claim. When she's the most versatile when it comes to hitting multiple enemies, but besides fire damage and Fiery Jinx that's all she has. Veil is too situational and its usage is rare to be considered "OP" and Infatuate isn't that great in most situations. She also gets completely walled by Bomb enemies, Chomps, Fire, Fire immune enemies. Flurrie is also ridiculous when equipped with Slow Shroom/Lip Lock. Also Vivian's Shade Fist can't hit spike enemies either, and the "ceiling" claim isn't much of a notice because only two enemy versions with "ceiling" attribute exist, Rawk Hawk's low HP ceiling move and Swoopers, aside from that no enemies in the game are ceiling based, so that hardly counts.
    Koops is also far from the worst, the best partner for Pit of 100 trials (especially in Danger/Peril) his shell abilities (while specifically grounded) act like cheaper versions of Fiery Jinx, so you'd cost less FP to attack multiple enemies. And Shell Slam does the same for piercing defense. When it comes to "underpowered" parnters, only Ms Mowz fits that camp. I don't see how people say she has more utility than Flurrie. lol Especially when Lip Lock is just Love Slap, but better. Ms Mowz only has one attacking move, has the lowest base damage of any partner, said move is limited to front target enemies, has no range, Tease is almost useless and RNG, and Smooch cost too much FP for its use.
    And Flurrie surpasses Bobbery in tanking role, with Lip Lock she can just keep restoring her HP, adding add buffs and items like Super Shroom and she's basically living mostly all the time. Bobbery may have more health, that just means he only takes slightly more damage and one attack makes his health worse than Flurrie's, Flurrie is better due to her ability to tank consistently while piercing defense. Gale Force can also dispel fog, and depends on enemy variety. It can even nerf certain enemies like Cortez weapons and Grodus X's.
    With Bow's defense weakness this only applies if the enemy with defense is a boss, like Crystal King or Final Bowser. As standard enemies with defense can be handled by Mario, since partner's acted more of extensions, their benefit came from who had the better support role to back up Mario and Bow fit the role the best. Any of her weaknesses could be alievated by Mario himself, see a row of Koopas or enemies with "flip over" weakness? Flip them over and Smack with Bow, This even applies to Bowser castle enemies like Bony beetles and Koopatrols. Not to mention the amount of enemies with defense compared to ones with no defense was small, so Bow has more chances to hit enemies more often than not. And even with her weakness, Outta Sight still acted as the single best defensive option in the game as it allowed versatility for Mario. If she can't attack, have Outta Sight give Mario her turn and do the job for her.
    Watt also isn't overpowered. Useful for defense and is consistent sure, but Bow fills the role better for better damage and again Mario can handle her weakness Not to mention two of her moves are RNG and Turbo Charge is a nice support move She's second best behind Bow. Ms Mowz is easily worst than any 64 partner, but otherwise I agree the TTYD partners have more variety and situations to use them.

      Hey thanks for the comments! I did try to test out each moves from each of the partners and be as fair as possible, but with all the different strategies, and badge load outs it's really quite difficult to figure out just how good each partner is. There were some things I didn't even realize until after I made this video, like Koops' Shell Slam pierces defense, I just didn't know it did because I never thought to test it on enemies with defense, and that fact does kinda bump him up my list quite a bit. I still think he could be a little bit stronger, and while Bob Ombast is very costly and doesn't pierce defense, I still think it's strong enough to balance that out, plus it hits all enemies. Though obviously if you have a row of high defense enemies on the ground then Shell Slam is the much better option. It also comes down to load outs, since I go for a very high damage load out, defense doesn't really matter as much, so a powerful move like Bob Ombast is just really good for high damage on everyone. Flurrie could out tank Bobbery like that yes, though if you want to keep doing high damage Bobbery would be better. Yes it costs a lot of FP but you can keep getting FP back with the right preparations (and sweat feast). My main strategy for Bonetail was to constantly use Bob Ombast, and replenish FP while also replenishing the health of whoever needed healing with an ultra jelly. But that's what is so great about this game, there are many different strategies that are all effective, I did watch my one friend one time beat Bonetail only using Flurrie and he had like 20 HP, it was pretty funny. I really should do more experimenting with Yoshi though.
      With Watt I still think she's overpowered. Sure what you said about Bow can work, but it's reliant on you only focusing on the one enemy. If you wanted to attack 2 enemies per turn, Bow would be useless. If I wanted to use Star Storm and also attack with my partner, Bow would be useless, and Watt would be the best choice. This is also reliant on having Spike Shield equipped, and yes that would be a good badge if you wanted to use Bow for the final chapter, but given the limited BP you can get in the first game, I'd rather have on more useful badges, since Watt can easily get the job done no matter what load out you have. Outta Sight is a really good defensive move, but unless it's a charged up attack I don't find it worth it to use when I could be doing more damage instead. I just can't say Bow is the best character, when she's reliant on a specific strategy, while Watt is good no matter what strategy you use. Now if high defense enemies weren't as common, the Bow would be the best one, as she is the best against enemies with no defense, but with the final area having so many high defense enemies, and also Bowser having 2 defense, I just can't say she is the best, she's not versatile enough.
      But again thanks for the comment and alternate viewpoints!

    • @Surgemaster2012
      @Surgemaster2012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheRedGuy Likewise I also enjoy your view points. :) As with the Bow point, not really. I actually did multiple playthroughs using only Bow as my partner in battle. It was a challenge where I was only allow to use her and Outta Sight is more versatile than you think.
      What you said about Rally Wink applies there. Outta Sight is basically a combo of Veil and Rally Wink, she gives up her turn in exchange for Mario gaining another. This has many applications.
      With defense enemies all of them share a common weakness to "flip over" so by having Mario execute this (keep in mind Mario's spread damage can pierce defense like the Quake Hammers) allowing Bow's weakness to be an advantage. Since the amount of enemies with defense are much smaller than ones with no defense it benefits more having Bow's higher damage output, her 6 damage with Smack and 10 damage with Fan Smack and for enemies like the Anti Squad the high damage is much better.
      Defense isn't really that much common in 64. The amount of Defense to No defense is smaller than you'd realize. But for defense Watt is the best option (obviously)
      Not really. You can use the Quake badges for enemy loadouts prodvided they have spikes+ high defense, and singe targets use Spike Shield+ jump, Mario would do more raw damage anyway and even has defense piercing Jump with D-own Jump. it's worth noting Power Quake can be just as proficent as Mega Quake and cost less to use. You also leave Double Dip as well.
      It has more applications that avoiding charge moves. It can even be used effective against telegraphed options.
      With Outta Sight, it gives many properties to Mario (see any top challenge runner execute this) since the partners in 64 function as extra damage/priority their viability lies solely in how much they can benefit Mario himself. Bow already has the best damage output for non defense enemies. With Outta Sight, you can plan things like Heal/Outta Sight/Attack or Attack/Outta Sight/Attack or Charge Outta Sight/Attack. That's also mentioning Mario with added attack buffs and his many ways to pierce defense or his spread damage options etc. This amount of versatility easily makes Bow the best because of the benefits it gives Mario.
      For instance say I wanted to Star Storm, I could have Mario use an item or attack, Outta Sight to avoid damage, then star storm (provided it doesn;t outright KO them) Or Double Dipping Items with Outta Sight, then Attacking. It can even work if Mario wants to go for a charge strategy.
      With Bobbery I can see admiring his high damage, but for an enemy with defense I'd rather just use Koops or Vivian, they are less costly and even with FP saving/restoring applications like Flower Saver P/Flower Finder/Happy Flower it'd be about damage and priority. (I also think spending SP on Sweet Feast isn't the best option, but that's down to personal preference) if I fight say a group of Wizzerds Koops and Vivian would just me more effective and you'd waste less. For lesser defense Stampede just outdamages Bob-Ombast with less FP with power buffs applied. Yoshi and Goombella are easily the best partners in damage output.
      But this is all just personal biased/experience I still appreciate your own perspective.

      @@Surgemaster2012 Hm, interesting, perhaps some more experimentation with Bow is required, I completely forgot about Quake Hammer. Although Outta Sight doesn't work like Rally Wink, she doesn't give Mario an extra turn, she just loses her next turn. Unless I'm missing something? But yeah pretty interesting hearing about different playstyles other people have for these games.

    • @Surgemaster2012
      @Surgemaster2012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheRedGuy She actually does give Mario an extra turn. Since Mario already attacks before her turn comes up, she can Outta Sight to make him avoid damage, then gives up her turn in exchange for Mario attacking once again.
      Basically it's like Mario gets two options in one turn. Similar to how Goombella gives her turn to Mario with Rally Wink, Bow does this with Mario. Because of this single application it gives Mario a variety of options, don't forget Mario also has D-Down Jump that pierces defense as well and with attack buffs his Jump can do 10 damage (5 each) and on bosses where Bow is offensively useless, you still can use Outta Sight if you predict telegraphed options well.
      Like final Bowser using the Star Wave, he usually uses it every 3 turns (if he doesn't use all 3 of his healing turns that is) knowing this in advance can allow you to outpredict said option and have Mario use his next turn. Or with Lantern Ghost it only shines every odd/even turn. For instance (Jump, Shine, Jump Shine) there's a pattern to his moves.
      These are just examples anyway tho. But that's where my point is at. Bow can even be used against Kent C Koopa, who also can be flipped over you can have Bow pack on damage by targeting his tail which has no defense.

    Hello Red guy, new subscriber here. So um. Where to begin.... I really loved your review, it is easily my favorite review of TTYD so far. With all the hottakes going around about this game on Twitter and Reddit, its nice to see someone who actually remembers what the game was liked for while addressing its issues like with any other game. My major gripe would be the epilogue resolution, some of the stage hazards I'm not fond of, I do wish status was a more prominate option (that's a personal preference) , but the epilogue felt unrealistic to me. (I don't buy Vivian staying with her sisters, though I do like Doopliss as an actor) But the thing I agree with the most is the backtracking complaint being so overblown. (aside from Flurrie, she's my favorite partner. She's so underrated) I also never got the hate for Chapter 2. The Punies weren't even difficult to navigate.
    AKA every single opinion repeated ad nausem. I feel the backtracking complaint is so overblown it makes me question the reason people even liked the game to begin with. Is it really so toxic that it takes away from every aspect of the game? (especially when every single title in the series does backtracking, and with the exception of PM64 all of them are done poorly)
    I'm not saying TTYD is even a perfect game, far from it (64 is my favorite of the series, less toxicity involved), but I'm kind annoyed at all the hottakes toward the game and the hate is so (Backtracking= bad= 0/10) People often forget why they liked it in the first place since so must is placed on just focusing what they dislike about it. Backtracking in itself isn't even a bad thing, the game does do it poorly in a few areas, but I don't think it ruins the game. Not to mention who plays an RPG for its level design, since I don't recall a level design ever being an RPGs strongsuit. Even if I do prefer 64's level design, it could be too straightfoward at times. (Especially Chapter's 2 and 4) and your complaint with the Shadow Sirens in the epilogue is why I hated Chapter 6's narrative in 64.
    I also feel as a result its starting to become of the Joseph Anderson effect. (The same guy who made why Mario Odyssey isn't a masterpiece) A trend on TH-cam that's been going on for the past couple of years usually in different types of media, (usually in the form of video essays) where people just talk about why something is popular is considered bad. Especially when people just only ever seem to focus on the negative points and blow them up to be bigger issues than what they need to be. While I don't like it myself and the game does it poorly in a few areas its not armageddon. What I get is just people are just impatient (which 99% of the time, they are). (aside from General White screw that and his trouble quest) No shade btw (it's also especially bad when people can treat the other 4 games as if they are perfect when the reason they criticize TTYD is for the same thing. lol)
    I always found level design the weaker parts of an RPG (which is actually why I'm looking forward to Origami King in that regard). Aside from exploring what I have to or just talking to town locals and experimenting what really should be so dominate about it that a single aspect makes it terrible? Not saying it can't be good or anything, its just never something I played an RPG for. Do people play Mario & Luigi because of the level design? What about Pokémon, Fire Emblem or Persona? I could see this with an Action RPG, where there's more emphasis on the level design (like Xenoblade for instance, where the world you explore is more massive compared to Paper Mario's more condensed level structure and progression), and again I'm not saying this doesn't mean the levels shouldn't be good, its just not what you play an RPG for.
    I do apologize if this was more of a rant than a response, but I'm just tired of this becoming a trend just because of a "message" or "because its of the contrarian opinion"..

      Hey thanks for the long comment! Yeah it gets really tiring hearing from people trying to dismiss this game and make it out to be not that good, especially when they just complain about things everyone already agreed were flaws. It'd be one thing to just criticize it, but some of these people seem to have a vendetta against the game, and they make it seem like it's bad to even like it. I mean when you make a video called "TTYD isn't perfect" what am I supposed to take away from that? What's the point? Because it just seems like you have a problem that people like TTYD.

      @@TheRedGuy Exactly! That video was by Salt Factory right? If so, it was really bad! I mean check this out even twitter.com/lacebians/status/1274774118769070081 despite saying unpopular for Classic Series a majority of them are TTYD related.
      I actually know someone on Twitter who seems to make a lot of jabs toward TTYD and fans. I also never understood the Chapter 5, Francesca, Partners and Badge complaint people seem to have with it. Especially when a lot of these problems could be tracked to other paper Mario games. It'd be interesting to see someone who doesn't mind the backtracking.
      I like it because it incentivizes the player to search the level for things they may have otherwise not bothered to search for because their only objective would be just Point A to Point B (though in Chapter 4's case I do wish you already got the p since you know Doopliss's name after the first playthrough) or if they serve a narrative purpose or helps connect the world.

    • @traptorpedo1005
      @traptorpedo1005 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@openspaces5263 (this might have a part 2 response) The reason is because it's a post about UNPOPULAR opinions about the original TRILOGY as in all of them as a whole, yet 90% of them are just filled with responses bitching about TTYD. And the reason I have a problem is because it relates exactly to the problem I mentioned above about the Joseph Anderson effect. When people just only ever seem to focus on the negative points and blow them up to be bigger issues than what they need to be. While I don't like the backtracking myself and the game does it poorly in a few areas its not armageddon.
      And that's exactly what the post is doing, they are focusing WAY to much on the backtracking so much they've become an echo chamber of the same thing over and over again, because they are blowing this up so much its less of a unpopular opinion and more about venting that they hate the backtracking simply because TTYD is a popular game. When really the backtracking complaint has always existed and has ran its course so much at this point can you even say its an unpopular opinion? Do these people even know what an unpopular opinion is? An unpopular opinion is something not as seen or regarded by the masses, things like Chapter 2 and backtracking aren't unpopular opinions they are just rants. All that post amounts to is endless bitching and blowing up problems as if TTYD started corona virus. Everyone complains about it, so its not unpopular. Are people that fickle and impatient that it triggers them that much? It really just boils down to how impatient they are as a person. It also sums up one of my pet peeves of gaming community, how unbelievably fickle they can be "something's too linear= bad, something's too open world or to not linear/straightforward enough= bad" like what do you want?
      It also kills me that they end it with (I still like the game) but focus so much on it they act as if the game is completely unplayable. And while I like 64 the most, I personally take issue with why they are choosing to prefer it to TTYD.. If people only think 64 is better because of level design, that means they don't care about the other features 64 had to offer or the improvements TTYD made outside of that area. Since nobody ever elaborates on what makes it better other than the level design. Which aside from that 64 is worse in every other way. (Except for maybe the RNG in the stage hazards) Its just another excuse to throw mud at the game just because it happens to be popular. The entire post might as well be everything they hate about TTYD, because it doesn't even seem like they like the game at all. It's beyond criticism if all you do is say what you hate about something and don't even mention what's good about it. I also find the level design in 64 to be overrated, even if I do prefer it to TTYD. For instance Dry Dry Desert, while I love the lore of the landscape and area, I hate how its designed. The idea of this chapter is cool until you realize outside of a select few areas you're designed to go to, the other maps of the area are completely pointless and are just empty dead ends.
      And outside of that all you have is your objective, the dungeon, then the boss. In fact I could sum up a lot of 64's levels as Point A to Point B objectives, once you get to where you're going and then to the dungeon all you do beyond that is get to the boss. And that's pretty much how 64's levels go. What saves 64 is that at least the scenarios you get into are pretty fun (like the boos in gusty gulch or mayor penguin's wife). Aside from Chapter's 2, 4 and 6. And I'm going to say it, being overrated isn't a real reason or relate to an unpopular opinion, its just something specific to your own personal beliefs. I know this might sound like I'm doing the same, despite saying 64 is my favorite, but its true! I do prefer specific details over TTYD. Like enemies flattening and making those cartoonish sound effects, the charm of seeing the Toad Town citizens live their everyday normal lives, Mario's spin in his death animation, the jumping, thumbs up and wagging finger of victory animation, the greater input on status, the fire effects etc.
      I also hate the "hallways and linear" complaint. When having hallways isn't inheritly a bad thing, they also don't even mention the scenarios that go on within the chapter itself. SPM has the worst offender of hallway design in the series, its literally a straight line and occasionally turn 3D to find an alternate path, area, item or puzzle piece. (or the rare times you need other characters abilities) its more of a problem because SPM is designed to be a sidescrolling platformer with RPG elements, an in platformers level design is a much more important detail. Sammer's Kingdom is also just a worst Glitzville. (the only exceptions are Dotwood Tree, Whoa Zone, Fort Francis, And the Tidal Pool) I also don't get the whole "linear is bad" just because something is linear doesn't make it bad. And 64 is linear as well, what are they talking about? lol
      My issue with Chapter 6 in 64 being related to TTYD's epilogue is because of the outcome. Beldam gets no punishment for being the one who started the events of the game and summoning the Queen who almost threw the world into enternal darkness and almost destroyed everyone. The same thing happens in Flower Fields. Except with Rosie in Flower Fields. Her It's All About Me attitude makes her willing to sacrifice Lily's health and hydration rather than give-up her favorite MacGuffin - which, when Rosie begrudgingly relents, is easily replaced anyway. But does she at least become a Jerk with a Heart of Gold about Lily? Nope, Rosie's just glad there's not one less neighbor to show-off in front of. She was the one resident actually deserving of Huff N. Puff's Mordor and gets away with almost killing someone out of pure vanity.

    Yes, there is a game I gave a hard pass on that I later loved. That game for me is Xenoblade Chronicles Wii. I love RPGs but never gave XBC a chance because it just rubbed me the wrong way as a teenager but I played it at 26 and proceeded to throw away about 500 hours of my life. It is still my all time favorite game usurping Mario RPG. I was a little disappointed with the remake as they should have been more ambitious with some character rebalancing (I'm looking at YOU Sharla) and a couple of changed unique armor bits that carried more diverse weapon gems since those are very underpowered but I still love it to bits. I wish 3 brought back some vision mechanic from 1 but it is more inspired by 2 which I still don't like.

      Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii was one of those games that I came so close to enjoying because of the world and characters but sadly like most RPGs the gameplay was a little too confusing and boring for me to enjoy. Sadly, the Mario RPGs games also fall in this trap as well.
      The only RPGs I have played that I have enjoyed were Persona 4, Kingdom Hearts series, Fire Emblem series, Valkyria Chronicles series and I guess you could say that the Yakuza series is an RPG with the newest entries being full fledge RPGs but Yakuza 1-6 play more like 3D beat em ups than RPGs.

    The Red Guy, can you do a review on Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time?

      I have no plans for it, and after I'm done with Paper Mario I doubt I'd want to even touch a Mario RPG for quite some time.

    TTYD is a game I love, but I admit the back tracking sucks.
    Still compared to the others in the series (64 having a BP cap of 40, SPM's combat being horrid, Sticker Star having the Backtracking Combat Flaw Character Flaw, CS continuing this, and OG still continuing those issues.) They all have their flaws and imo TTYD is the less egregious flaws.

    I don't know if I'm only one, but I actually prefer the music in the first game. The Ice King boss battle theme sends chills (pun intended) to this day.

    Great video! I'm so happy to see TTYD getting the love it deserves! (Although I am struggling with not giggling every time I hear certain names of characters and places because I think of the alternate versions from Lucahjin's LP! 🤣) I have to say that my least favorite "Chapter" or area of TTYD is when you have to help the Punies. I am NOT a fan of backtracking to begin with, but that part of the game was just so tedious, I was happy every time I finished it! (Hell, I skipped out on the Game Grumps videos when they got to that part of the game until they were finally done!) I will say though that I do enjoy the music of Boggly Woods!
    My favorite areas have always been The Glitz Pit, Creepy Steeple, The Excess Express, Poshley Heights (the fancy shmancy town all the wealthy characters live), Rogueport Sewers (especially for the song used there), but definitely Twilight Town! I just love the aesthetic of Twilight Town so much! I love the darker colors and the heavy shadowing on the characters, the music - it all works so well! Also I think this was also when Kingdom Hearts 2 was out? Because I remember the prologue for that game with Roxas taking place in a town that was also called Twilight Town, and really enjoying both versions of a town steeped in perpetual twilight! But for me, I always enjoyed TTYD's Twilight Town more, as it felt more in line with what I imagined a town forever stuck in twilight to look (KH2's struck me more as the "prettier" version that appears as the perfect sunrise or sunset) and because I have always liked that "dark look" in children's media since I was young (kinda The Nightmare Before Christmas, but more like Hanna-Barbera's animated adaptation of Ray Bradbury's "The Halloween Tree", capturing the perfect moment when the sun is setting as you're about to head out trick-or-treating).
    As I mentioned a few times, I absolutely love the soundtrack for this game! I really enjoyed the first Paper Mario's soundtrack, and will often revisit certain songs ("City in the Stars", "Crystal Palace", "Gusty Gulch", and "Shiver Mountain" being notable standouts), but TTYD's soundtrack definitely felt like an elevation in the game's music! ("Rogueport" and "Rogueport Sewers", "Hall of the Thousand Year Door", "We're Counting on You Mario", "X -Naut Fortress", "Excess Express at Night", "Boss Rawk Hawk", "Fahr Outpost", "Intro Story", "All Aboard to Rogueport", "Excess Express at Dusk", "Detective Pennington" is a treat!, "Creepy Steeple", "Pianta Parlor", "Reunion", "Poshley Sanctum", "Shadow Peach Battle", "Sadness and Happiness" is the perfect bittersweet song for Admiral Bobbery and Scarlette, "Twilight Town" again such a perfect unsettling song for a creepy, unsettling place) Even the jingles for things like the beginning and ending of a chapter, acquiring an item, getting a crystal star, and so on are so good!

    I'm not sure if anyone's said this (I'm watching this 3 years after the fact), but doesn't Flurie join you so you can save the Punis? I thought she became their guardian after moving out to the woods

    Chapter 4 is actually the best in the game. And that's not saying much because the entire game is awesome in general, even if to varying degrees.

    Chapter 3 is probably my favourite chapter in the game (besides the last one)
    But it's also the one with the most wasted potential for me.
    I was so disappointed that we just got to fight basic enemies for 98% of the fights.
    It would've been perfect if they all would have been unique.
    Maybe even some easter eggs!
    Just imagine fighting the Koopa Bros, Kent C Koopa, Lee or Jr Troopa here!!!
    Plus a whole bunch of new unique characters.
    The Koopa Bros would be my favorite choice here.
    And tgey could've easily taken the role of the brown Koopa that befriends u in tge minor league

    • @TheRedGuy
      @TheRedGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it does get better in the major league, and the Grubba conditions help, but yeah the actual fights could have been more challenging. And I like your idea of the easter eggs, though I wouldn't want to replace the minor league friends.

    This is excellent!
    BTW, Chapter 2 is AMAZING imo, I had NO mechanical or navigational issues.
    The music and atmosphere of this place is unmatched, one of my favorite aesthetics in ANY video game! That tree is mysterious (its also an aquarium?!).
    One of the most magical places in video game history imo
    Edit:
    And this is not nostalgia, I only JUST played and beat it in 2023 as a dude in my 30's lol (on emulator, with widescreen mod, and 4K HD texture pack, looked like it was made today!)
