I can imagine these videos probably took a butt load of time and patience but good job 👍 It really honestly sucks Nintendo seems kind of tone deaf or developed a sort of creatively bankrupt cowardice what with them taking drastic measures after Super Paper just because the series went outside there no story Philosophy comfort zone which to me seems ridiculous and over dramatic.

Every time I see that scene where Koopa Bros. prepare bill blasters I think of Book of Mario. "We can delete the ground, when the situation is bad. We are calm" is just stuck in my brain, and that wasn't even the funniest line.

Actually, the self-recovery of later bosses can be avoided. They only do it if Mario's health is a certain minimum percentage of his current max health or higher, and there are a number of buffs Mario can get while at low health so there is a strategic element to keeping Mario's health low on purpose.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the "running away from Tubba Blubba" music in the music section. That track goes HARD. I rememer recording that song onto a tape as a kid, along with the Super Mario World ending music. Good times.

I think this game did answer one question that many people had on their mind. What if Bowser won? And boy did the game go crazy with this idea. The game starts off with Bowser stealing the Star Rod. Bowser shows up at the beginning of the game. No minions. No summoning a boss enemy to deal with you. He fights Mario right at the beginning of the game in Peach's Castle as it's in space. And it doesn't go well. Bowser doesn't just defeat Mario. He curbstomps him. He claws him to near death, finishes him off by brutally burning him alive, and then to just make sure he's dead blasts him with lightning that sends him flying out a window to his doom. That's it. Mario's dead. And all Peach could do is watch in horror as he's launched out the window. This wasn't so much as saving the world as it was liberating the world from Bowser. He won. He captured the Star Spirits, is terrorizing the kingdom and ridding it of wishes similar to Smithy before him, the situation of this game really starts off hopeless. Even other heroes and even the gods doubt that Bowser can be stopped. And it even shows in his minions. The Goomba King terrorizes Goomba Road making it hostile, the Koopa Bros have a fortress set up and took over a castle that used to belong to friendly Bob-ombs throwing them out and locking others away as Fuzzies run rampant and stealing shells in Koopa Village. Tubba Blubba is devouring innocent Boos whole and basically trapping them to a fate worse then death. General Guy's Shy Guys start robbing people and causing havoc in town. Huff N. Puff blocks out the sky in Flower Fields making it so the fields start to decay and it's inhabitants are dying. The Crystal King turned a sacred shrine into a fortress of illusions. The list goes on. It really makes it feel like Mario is literally overcoming all odds against him after he's revived by the Star Spirits. This game teaches one a hard lesson. All it takes is one victory from a villain to throw everything into chaos. Just one victory. That's what makes it all the more important for heroes to succeed. Sure Bowser gets defeated in the end and the kingdom is liberated but it was an uphill battle for the heroes due to Bowser's victory at the beginning.

@@thejonbrownshow8470 They did made a Mario Movie this year actually and It was a decent film but it's definitely not high art cinema and if were to compare it to other animated movies like the Pixar's Toy Story trilogy or Ghibli's Spirited Away it defiantly does fall flat but as a huge fan of the Super Mario franchises, I found all the easter eggs and references to be enjoyable it to be a very enjoyable film from start to finish.
I guess I so worried about this film since Illumination was making this film and I'm one of those people who absolutely hates Illumination and most their movies (except the first Despicable Me) their probably one of the most corporate and cynical people working in animated film world right now and there animation is extremely cheap and budget friendly sure the texturing looks nice but their animation and characters designs are beyond dull and boring, also when there films try to have an emotional beat it the most predictable and trite thing you can think of for a story and to this day Illumination is still continuing their streak of bland and dull family movies with absolutely no depth or substance whatsoever.
Another worry I had with this film is that Mario is as his core a blank slate and these type characters only work in Video Games since its meant to emersed you into the experience but in movie it doesn't work since your main character has to have more personality and depth to them to make the film's story progress because if you don't have that then you're left with a film that's pretty shallow and devoid of any content.
Another problem I had with this film was the plot was extremely simplistically and I know people are going to defend this point and say "oh its Mario the stories have always been simplistic" but this is a film not video game both are two completely different mediums because with a Movie you watch what happens and the events play out, but Video Games are more of an interactive medium so when you try mix both of them together it just doesn't work very well.
I guess I'm more critical on films than I am with video games because when it comes to games to a certain degree you get as much out of it as you put in but with a movie it's a more passive experience so in my mind it has to hold up to higher scrutiny.

I think Huff N. Puff outside of Bowser himself is probably the worst bad guy in this game in terms of his personality...the thing with him is he's willing to commit genocide against sentient plant life by using his machine to blot out the sun so despite his limited screen time you do get a general idea of what he's like through the marks he left on Flower Fields. Lava Piranha was subtly hinted at by Gourmet Guy as being the big boss Bowser had in charge of Lava Lava Island. As for the Crystal King...what I think they were going for him was a sense of mystery. He isn't like the other bosses who are boss variants of enemies you fought before. He's this enigmatic entity that seems to be nothing more then a pair of glowing yellow eyes controlling a crown and garb. Given the whole mysterious cosmic feel of the Shiver Region it makes sense that the boss is very mysterious as well.

38:24 The "HP Plus" and "FP Plus" badges are more for late level play sense there's a limit to how much you can increase you Max HP/FP by level ups (once you reach that limit you can't choose to increase that stat anymore), but the badges lets you pass that max limit.

Wow, personally the best/comprehensive/mosy detailed Paper Mario 64 video review on the internet! Phenomenal work! I agreed with EVERYTHING! Especially the sentiment of being able to actually SEE the enemies on screen, a large reason why I love these games, Super Mario RPG, PM64, PMTTYD, and the Mother franchise(which I believe is the first instance of being able to see/avoid enemies????) Is how you arnt halted or dont need repels every time you take a step, while I do personally adore FF6,FF7, Pokemon, Etc, there indeed is a reason I personally always perfered the Paper Mario approach to uniqe JRPG gameplay thats a blend of classic jrpg turn based/action based gameplay. If im being 100% honest after I played TTYD and went back to PM64, PM64 always felt a tad generic in comparison to TTYD, ik theres a lot of people who might perfer PM64 which is great(theres definitly a lot of uniqe and charming stuff here)! But TTYD personally went above and beyond local wise, gameplay wise, diologe wise, atmosphere wise, and just general charm and story was so personally beyond incredible that I always (unfairly admittedly) felt PM64 was more generic and that I would rather be playing TTYD. But especially after this review, I can for sure appreciate it far more, it was for sure in my top 50 games ever,(ttyd is in my top 5) but now I would say its in my top 30 range, great stuff as always Red, looking foward to the next!

"bUt rED, kEfKa ONLY hAs 65k hEAlTh yOu nOoB!" Also again wanted to say, but I really think you'll gell with Mother 3(and Super Mario RPG), Mother 3 has the turn based action rpg/uniqe gameplay battle style akin to Paper Mario, you can see/avoid enemies, and also if your level is above the enemies level but the enemy rushes to you before you can react/escape, you automatically win/gain level and you dont even have to BATTLE! It just automatically combust and gives you the experience. As well ofcourse has that SUPER weird/quirky nintendo charm/TTYD esque diolog(tho a tiny bit more mature) and colorful unqie local and an actually wonderful engaging story(my personal fav story inna nintendo game). Aside from that i'm pumped for this marothon! I pray we soon get a proper new PM game a akin 64 and the Thousand Year Door gameplay wise, and Super Paper Mario story wise.

And TTYD has way better gameplay & dialog wise than PM has. Not that I'm hating on PM. But personally, that game has age that TTYD improved.
So you tell me how TTYD had no good story, no atmosphere, no improved gameplay wise & doesn't have it's charmed that Paper Mario had, when it didn't. I know it's your opinion. But I'm sorry. That just wrong.

Some helpful tips for the game:
    1. It's recommend you use short hops at the end of spin dashes instead of full jumps because jumps bring you back to running speed.
    2. There are money saving glitches with the Lil Oinks. If you use tap jumps (look at Stryder7x and even speedrun guides to learn what it is) toward a certain corner, spin and hammer after inputting the opposite direction in the anolog stick, and mount Lakilester. You can also do tap jumps in another area and do a perfectly angled jump into the pen. Both of these clips skip the cutscene where the pigs run away. Watch "Why are there 10 blue toads stored in this room" from Stryder7x.
    3. I don't know if this applies to the Ice King, but with final Bowser, he only revives his health if your HP is more than 10% of his. That's why speedrunners don't level up HP and use "peril strats" (use mega rush and have only 1 HP).
I might edit this if I can think of anything else, but I just thought I'd let you know.

Only problems I have are that the game is too basic for the first couple chapters, you can't skip dialogue, and some techniques are too OP, but that's it really. I also agree that Chapters 3 and 7 are my favorite. The Crystal Palace in Chapter 7 just has an incredible atmosphere.

Is that the final boss segment can be a bit tedious if you lose, since you have to do the entire Kammy Koopa bit over and over again and watch all the cutscenes if you die to Bowser. Which I did a lot as a small boy.

You argued that Watt was the best partner, but only chapter showed how she is the best partner in Chapter 8, seemingly ignoring the fact that Watt has no use in Chapter 7 (except against the boss), very limited used in chapter 5 (against buzzies, though goombario is better) and limited use in chapter 6 (against spinies).
Compare that to Bow, which is amazing in chapter 3, good in chapter 4, great in the first half of chapter 5, chapter 6 and 7, and is useful in chapter 8 to avoid koopatrol charge attacks, simply because enemies very rarely have Defence in Paper Mario.

also i played 64 right after 100%ing sticker star (a tedious task i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy) and remembered what it was like to play a game that's enjoyable and has an engaging battle system that allows you to make interesting decisions.

    • @stagelights_
      @stagelights_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

i do think part of the reason i slightly prefer 64 is just the fact that a while back i played a really good difficulty hack of 64 called paper mario master quest, which adds a load of new areas (including a version of the pit of 100 trials, which is available before finishing the prologue), quality of life features (you have action commands from the start this time), and balance changes, and i think my brain associates 64 with that specific version of it. so maybe it's not entirely fair to either to compare a well made hack of the game.

    • @jaretco6423
      @jaretco6423 ปีที่แล้ว

I think the reason is because PM64 doesn't have an whole lot of backtracking or severe pacing issue as TTYD had. That and the levels in PM64 are not only very unique with many interesting chapters, but it's also pretty spacies as u have room to avoid enemies and has multiple branches to explore, whereas TTYD is mostly linear and you'll have an hard time avoiding enemies. And while some parts of the battling system in TTYD does do some improvements, others times it can be kinda broken if u set what badge or any stage hazards that effect the battles and it can get annoying.

I always loved paper mario 64, its prob one of my favorite games as it feels very smooth, esp with spin-dashing.
perhaps in some ways a bit more than TTYD. while both do have backtracking(PM64 chapter 4, 6, TTYD's chapters 2,4 and 7. 2 cuz it can be easy to get lost),
PM64's is technically less noticeable until ch. 4+chapter 6 and chapter 8(if you go all the way back down bowser's castle), but the game actually goes by somewhat quickly since mario walks really quickly, including the spin dash.
also yeah the crazy-dayzees can actually sleep-lock mario, essentially permanently in ch 6. specifically the battle-formation of 4 before the super block, right where the amazy-dayzee's located at. Dark Koopas can also do the same thing in the toad town sewers via Dizzy-lock. I deff got a few game-overs from both of these. mostly the crazy dayzees, rarely the dark koopas.
the wack part bout PM64 is the only way to reach the level cap of 27 is strictly the amazy dayzee, as at level 26 everything stops giving exp but amazy dayzees.
in light of the TTYD remake, I'm actually curious if PM64 will ever get remade one day.
I'm sure may would love to see the Master 3 w/his triple combo, Jr. Troopa, Koopa Bros, and all the other bosses+their musics in hd. for me PM64's battle+miniboss themes got the most energetic feels, to the point it never gets tiring.

Incorrect about Star Power. Yes you do get it back by using Focus/Deep Focus or naturally through each turn. But there are two other ways. Leveling Up restores Star Points and Sleeping in a Bed at Mario and Luigi’s House or a Toad House. Toad Houses are basically Healing Blocks that restore Star Power on top of HP and FP. That’s why Toad Houses are relevant to go to! ☺️😁😊💖

It's a gambling concept (coincidentally it's next to the gambling pipe) where ten coins could get you an item that would cost say 20 or 30 at a shop. Some lil oinks leave items that normally have a set number scattered around the game; it would end up costing hundreds of coins but you could technically farm an item (example: repel gel) so you can beat bosses quicker.

I mean the experience point distribution is functionally not too different from other games that don't scale the numbers. Paper Mario scales xp with your levels, so while it's always 100 xp to the next level, the amount you get dimishes depending on the enemy. What's so different about that than if every enemy had a set amount of xp gained upon killing and then the amount of xp needed to level up increases? It's like, you're still going to have to won 12 battles to get there, why does matter how the game calculates it? It's like predetermined vs. manual die rolls in Mario Party. It's not like you have that much control either way, considering that die rolls are supposed to be random.

Really intrigued on you maybe taking on oragami king one day, at worst to me, it's the closest to paper Mario 64 for me (as far as revolving around mushroom kingdom vs neighbors lol), it has many post sticker star flaws, but otherwise, I'd argue if Nintendo gives us more on top of that new formula, the series is oddly in good hands (won't say fitting till they ethier make another full in rpg, or a remake of one of/both the orginal 2😂 but I can live with the direction they're going, tho I want the more diverse casts back, or atleast bring back in the existing races in a dream team like fashion lol)

Low key there's also almost kinda like a racism/community thing going on(not the toads or Olly's motives, but rather 2d paper against 3d.). With Bowser's koopa troop (which is still missing unique designs, most tragically kammy and a paper version of the elite trio lol) being entirely friendly (with a underused and optional set of battles in their mess hall), and the world feel very lived in and... Other things I'm sure you'd probably pick up on as well, but origami king is the first time since super paper Mario I could see Nintendo ever making a thousand year door or 64 quality paper Mario game(honestly, I never cared about the battle systems, just to live in the world Mario is selling me at the moment lol that being said, aside from the boss battles, I'm very meh leaning on against the battle system 😂 I like the puzzle oriented dungeons, but in battles for me personally, I'm good 😂))

I'll give you Bow, but what does Bombette do better than Watt?

    • @Surgemaster2012
      @Surgemaster2012 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Bow is all around the best partner because she does the best damage to non-defense enemies It's also just good for quick damage too, plus Outta Sight just allows Mario to do so much and combos with so many that her weakness barely matters outside of like two fights.
As for Bombette she is easily the worst partner in the game, there's nothing she does better than anyone else, and the moment you get Parakarry she is outclassed in utility. Since her Body Slam and Bomb are just ground versions of Sky Dive and Shell Shot, you're just using Parakarry because his base moves do the same damage on more enemies in general (and even then Parakarry is outclassed by Sushie), Bombette just costs too much FP to do things other partners can do for much less (or the same) FP and get more use out of them. I'd even use Kooper over her due to Dizzy Shell and Fire Shell covering the ground (or just using Mario with +2 Power Quake, Multibounce, Star Storm etc) for less costly, but the same amount of efficiency.
She is also the worst offender of the lack of balance and variety of the partners in the game. Watt simply offers more than Bombette in those situations where her defense piercing matters and just overall usage.

I love it sets the standard of paper Mario, world building, character development, the creativity, everything is great but I feel it could do more partner development other then the chapter they are introduce to
Goombario: he idolized Mario and learning from Mario but he comes to found out he can be his Mario in his own way and inspire other residents or other kids
Kooper:he comes off as bland but let’s fix that he the risky impulsive guy that doesn’t think just do the overly confident type but he comes to find out that his way may not always the best and learns his mistakes especially his hero kolorado of becoming a mirror what he could become and try to be cautious and become a team player as time goes on
Bombette: I tried she probably the hardest to rewrite she’s a rebel with a cause and did not want to be oppress want to help the groups that screwed groups like the boos and any group that got messed up by bowser but comes to found out that sometimes you can redeem monsters it’s better to make peace rather then fighting and be divided she becomes to a negotiator
Parakarry: he believes he sucks and not confident and didn’t like his mail job but has to because this is want to his family did in his abities but as you go deeper he became more confident in his abities and slowly like his job that his job can be fun
Mousafa:yeah I added him to the party because Mrs.mowz ok what his character he’s hiding because tunkoopa took his throne and over throw mousafa by orders by king bowser he’s hiding but you help him to take the stand more like bombette helps him but you did as well that not all is lost and hopeless that you can fight back and reclaim your throne back against tunkakoopa another time he hates crystal king because his way of ruling is opposite then his and want to fight him one on one fight
Bow: she is spoiled at first but she learns to be on her own and slowly loving it she can do it by herself
Watt: you taught her as a baby because Watt didn’t have a dad she has a mom but general guy used her as a bulb for their tank she is reunited to her mom(big missopprunity) Mario is her father or step father sort of to her
Sushi:she hates kids doesn’t know you because she isolated herself she reluctantly do babysitting but she knows the volcano weakness and could be help and as time goes by she loves being other people deep down she is loving mother I wish we would see her grandchild and she loves kids she before she is a reluctant grump old fish that is isolated but as time goes by she is loving mother on the inside that loves kids
Lakilester: he is a villain by bowser had a traumatic event that Mario stump the Lakitus and hated Mario for that in his past and waited to defeat Mario he hates huff and puff because believes he’s stronger then huff and puff and tries to fight but fails so he ask for your help also he’s a chad tsundere and sees the horrors that bowser done and his gf could be the next target of loopa kingdom but as time goes he realize Mario and his gang aren’t that bad and enjoy his company tho he still pretend to act cool he’s cocky in the beginning but he humbled himself
In the end: the partners tell Mario and gave him the faith and strength to win and do encouragement to fight bowser and then do their goodbye speech and how Mario had affected them
(Wait till thousand year door) also I also hate that fat guy peach segment that can go duck off on how precise it can be

    • @raffaelw.2767

      @@TheRedGuy
      Oh okay... I understand.
Because although I also think that TTYD is the better game, it definitely has much better gameplay.
But overall I think it's actually not that much better.
Because while the gameplay is much more crisp and fast in TTYD and the Partners and Battle-System are also better.
PM64 has it beaten in other cases.
(In short this would be the world building, lvl design, foreshadowing and NPCs overall)
One thing that's quite interesting is the soundtrack.
If I had to decide which one to listen to by itself - It would be TTYD, it just sounds better, has some more interesting pieces and... It has the shadow Queens theme!
But I would say, in context of the game and what a game soundtrack should accomplish (depicting the game World musically that is)
I would say 64 has the better soundtrack.
I've 'tested' (And yes I know this is not really scientifically valuable) this with friends who didn't play any of these games.
It seems like PM64s Music does a much better job at evoking the various landscapes it wants to evoke, even without the visual aspect.
They 'guessed right' almost every time.
I played them Gusty Gulch - they said Spain/Mexico
      They've heard Dry Dry Desert - Egypt/Sahara/desert
      Outpost - desert market/basar
      Forever Forest - ghosts/haunted forest/spiders/bats
Toad Town - friendly neighborhood / the Sims
Shiver City - sounds wintery/christmassy etc etc...
They even guessed things like flower fields and Star haven quite right (I think "sounds like a starry night sky or lullaby" counts as a right guess)
On the other hand with TTYDs music.
While Petal Meadows and Glitzville were pretty good.
And they got Twilight trail and Town kind of right.
They thought the Island music sounded more middle eastern ore slightly Arabic (while they PM64s Island Track as "definitely tropical beach music")
Which makes sense, it evokes the harmonic minor scale which sounds slightly Arabic.
But most of TTYDs Soundtrack sounded spacey or industrial to them (Even things like Shwonk Fortress)
Of course they guessed Moon and XNaut fortress right (I think "One of these old arcade games with starship" counts)
I don't know... It was only 5 people but maybe there's something to it.
I as a musician like to analyze music, so this is particularly interesting to me.
It's also worth mentioning that the Soundtrack to 64 is much more melodic, which doesn't mean better, it's just that melodies have have a higher chance of being memorable, while also a higher chance to get on your nerves.
... Well I think this text is long enough 😂
      Sorry for that

It must feel tediously slow to someone who got his introduction to Paper Mario with TTYD.
So I don't think you're wrong about those things, I totally get why you feel that way

Eh, I really don't think highly of this game; sure, the writing can be funny at times, but not only do I absolutely hate Bow's demanding and bossy personality (how is she any different than Kersti?), but the gameplay also significantly lets it down - the Peach segments are slow and tedious, and really do not add much at all to the overall adventure (since she's completely separated from Mario). Twink comes down and tells Mario stuff anyway, so that could've been how info was conveyed, instead of forcing players to trudge through this boring muck.
The Action Commands also really have not aged well at all, with noticeable input delay involving them making it very difficult to accurately time them.
The level-up system should've remained intact from RPG, increasing all stats but allowing the player to dump a few extra points into one. As it is, in this and TTYD, it's far too restrictive when I oft found myself needing multiple stats increased at once.
Super Paper Mario either overhauled or removed all these flaws, making it by far the superior game.

I can respect your opinion on this game, and the criticisms you have are fairly understandable. That said, there are some points I’d like to bring up.
“How is [Bow] any different that Kersti?” Easy. Bow is an actual character and has a motive for doing what she’s doing.
The Peach sections aren’t good. Okay, fair, they are pretty slow. However, they do show Twink and Peach learning about where to direct Mario to go to.
Action commands haven’t aged well? Yeah, I get it, this game was made with CRTs in mind. That said, it’s not impossible to adjust timing based on input delay.

2). I do accept your point that the action commands were timed for CRTs, not flat-screens, but that also means they're rather unwieldy and frustrating these days, which reduces any sense of 'fun' surrounding combat.
