My neighbor runs a shop here in the Netherlands called Figarocars, that's specialized in the Nissan Figaro. They buy, restore, sell and do maintenance on these cars only

I have one of those at my shop right now. We are completely redoing the interior for the customer and rebuilding the convertable top. Its really a neat car. I added a security system with keyless entry and a hidden stereo with Bluetooth so they can listen to music from the phone. I love that you called it a micro machine, I loved those when I was a kid.

The Figaro's were another Japanese import that were popular in the early 2000's.
Sadly the UK's salted roads in winter were not kind to them and only a few importers
rustproofed them, so they started to fail our infamous annual MOT test.
Among other cars on the road they look realy small, but the retro styling made them
popular with many drivers who had smaller than average bodies, i had no chance!
Looks like the Car Wizard is now a Japanese import specialist, more video's please.

Same here in Ireland. We had a _huge_ Japanese import scene here on the late 90s-early 00's and not just the 'interesting' stuff for petrolheads, a lot of non car people were buying JDM imports as ordinary family cars. Much of it down to local car pricing being daft and often not as fully featured as in other markets. or you could buy an import in usually amazing condition for a lot less.
As a widespread thing it's long dead now of course. Killed by extra taxes and higher insurance(pushed by the local dealer lobbies) and both were already daft here. Like you guys in the UK rust didn't help, nor changing fashions.
Funny enough Figaros are one of the few JDM imports I still see about the place regularly enough, the other being MX-5s. A client of mine has one as her daily driver since 1999. A Figaro always raises a smile. 😀

MOT are a terrible idea. Many cars get lightly refurbished to pass MOT instead of the car getting repaired properly. The MOT motto is the same motto used in the Midlands to manufacture the Range Rover, "That'll do."

I recall seeing 2 of these in the UK in my past travels. Nissan made several 'retro' vehicles in the early 1990's. One of them was a micro commercial 'van' called the S-Cargo. It had a rounded top and back, kinda like a snail (escargot). I recall seeing one in New Zealand in 1994.

    • @MrDuncl
      @MrDuncl ปีที่แล้ว

They were quite common. A lady at work had one for years. A more interesting Japanese import which another lady had was a Toyota Sera. The car that inspired the McLaren F1 doors.

A friend of mine had a S-Cargo. We used to do a music trivia show and he used it to get the gear to the gigs. I drove it once, interesting experience. One really annoying quirk/feature of the S-Cargo was when the automatic transmission was put into reverse it made quite a loud beeping sound like many trucks reversing but only on the inside, not on the outside.

But when I park next to my sons Figaro...it's like my Chevelle isn't even there. He sold his Excellent Running '79 Firebird with a 5.3LS motor, and bought a Nice Figaro. When I was stationed in Japan there was an air show on my base that Japanese locals came to. This wasn’t too long after 9/11 so security was high. I was one of the guys that searched the locals cars that were coming on the base. We would hand them a laminated piece of paper that instructed them to do things like, exit your car, open all doors, hood and trunk. One of the instructions lost in translation was “open glove box.” Whoever had translated glovebox into Japanese had done so directly. The Japanese do not call the storage compartment on the passenger side of their cars a “glovebox.” Anyway I remember searching at least a couple of these Figaros. Fun times.

We got loads of these in the UK, & you still see them regularly (we get loads of JDM imports, thanks to the fact Japan has VERY strict laws about old cars, + are RHD). One thing I will advise the owner to do, is rustproofing! JDM cars don't tend to have much in the way of rustproofing, as they dont use salt on their roads, as a result, most of the UK ones have rotted out, especially in the rockers, rear wheel arches/fenders & floors, + a lot of the chromed steel parts, like bumpers, rust as well (I`ve seen them snap off!), so, tell him to get it thoroughly rustproofed ASAP, even more so if he`s in a wet area!

In Japan it costs a huge amount to get an old car through their safety inspection even if there is nothing wrong with it, so many old cars end up being exported to Australia, New Zealand and the U.K.

To get a new Figaro in Japan you had to buy a Nissan Lottery Ticket and go in the draw to be one of only 2000 lucky buyers! (This is true!) Every Figaro built was already pre-sold and they have a cult following in both Japan, Australia and the UK!
Grey imported to Australia and then updated to Australia design specs. Even now they bring between 30 - 40 thousand Aussie dollars. (19 -25K USD)

3 on Carsales as I write this. MightMods had a grey importer bring in 2 for a video series. Neighbour had one of these plus a Hyundai Copen. Mokes were mostly a Queensland thing - even when new.
If Wizard received a Copen in his shop he wouldn't fit in it.@@jayjaynella4539

Dah top. If it's like later Micras, drop the A panel trims between door and windscreen) and it should just lift off.

As I recall, 12" tires in the USA only have a width specification (no aspect ratio), so you'd see them in a size like P155/R12. The Renault LeCar (Renault 5 everywhere else) had them.

12" wheels were used on some configurations of the Geo Metro (and I think also some early Hondas?) . So you could get tires for that car here. They might not be the exact same size, but if that car isn't a daily driver they would probably be close enough.

The Ford Festiva, a subcompact made by Mazda for Ford, had 12" wheels. I have owned two of them in my lifetime. They were pretty common back in the 90's and 00's, so tire shops probably could get that tire size, at least back then. Although I haven't seen one of these on the road in probably the last 10 years. (sure would like to get my hands on another one now, though)

The 80s Chevy Sprint/1st gen Geo Metro & 1st gen Subaru Justy used 12” Tires.
A 89 Daihatsu Hijet Kei pickup I have uses 10” tires.
Try finding those at your local tire shop😳

Still see a fair few here on UK roads, they are super cool. Based on the Nissan Micra (JDM Nissan March) and you had to enter a lottery to even get the chance to buy one. Great video Wizard
