@@SamsTrains Yeah, the miniature railway is around 6-7 minutes long, you go through a tunnel and around a track, you need to pay for it which kinda sucks but it's a nice ride if you're interested in it.
The diesel is a BR 04. You can tell by the shape of the front windows on the cab. The BR 03s mainly have square windows, while as the 04s have more curved window frames. Another thing that helps to distinguish it is the shape of the exhaust chimney. Most 03s have the plant pot shape stack being wider at the top, while the 04s have more of a cone shape being wider at the bottom near the base. Some of the 03 class had different chimney variants similar to the 04 class, but the windows also helped distinguish them. Sorry if you've already heard this before, but I just like to make observations and deliver imput. Great video as always. I've always wanted to visit an heritage railway in the UK. Keep up the wonderful work. :)

A wonderful video Sam, the South Devon Railway encapsulates all that a Great Western Railway Branch Line is all about. 9466 is a 1952 built Hawksworth designed Pannier, and this loco like so many others, was rescued from Woodhams Scrap Yard in Barry, South Wales by the late Dennis Howells MBE, and it has always been kept in pristine condition.

Our trains are famous for living from 4059 to 1090 so long years we have a most famous here called flying scotsman
While I think US steam locomotives lacked elegance in their designs, I wouldn't say that they weren't beautiful.
In the UK, we made locomotives designed to look sleek and elegant. But the US designed theirs to show off their horsepower and toughness.

We currently have the L.92 London Transport 57xx Pannier tank engine at Gwili Railway in Carmarthenshire, West Wales on loan for the whole of 2021.
Hi Sam, A lovely video, thanks for sharing. The auto-coaches have been there from the beginning of the preservation of the line in the late 1960s. Some of their GWR coaches date from the 1930s.

Where I live, we have a really lovely old station, and at least once a year, we get a pair of steam engines running shuttles for a heritage weekend. When they fill up with water, they use the fire hose.

It’s a beautiful railway and I have been on it once and it’s a railway that I recommend to anyone in the area.
The scenery is beautiful and it’s incredible. It’s nice to see this, and remember how well made the trip was and I loved the railway, even though I love the West Somerset Railway the most as my favourite railway line, but it’s a nice line.
I rode on a Small Prairie 2-6-2 Tank 5526, and it was a lovely locomotive to ride on.

Lovely day out, you quite rightly mentioned the appearance of good old Fred Dibnah but I think that I saw Bill Oddie quite oddly looking out of the carriage window at one point, just goes to prove that all the stars love a day out on a steam engine.

well well as suspected you found one of my 2nd cousins on the 9644 locomotive one assumes he was the driver on that train for the day thanks for the awesome shot of him popping out @11:05 in the video while at totnes i must say when i visited july the weather was amazing and the scenery was fantastic as welll great shots sam as alway look forward to more like this as nothing beats real trains and by that i mean steam trains none of this modern stuff thanks again and hope you had a awesome time like i did

Just to let you know, they have 4 autocoaches there and have done since the railway was preserved, but only 2 are operating. There is one visiting from Llangollen, and another from the Severn Valley

I recommend visiting the plym valley railway it’s a 1.25 mile journey form marsh mills to plym bridge it’s a short but beautiful line but it’s only open on sundays so if you do plan to go that’s the day 😉

If you ever go on a train visiting trip to Australia, do not go during the height of the summer, because the steam engines won’t be running because of the fire hazard.
I recommend the puffing billy railway outside of Melbourne. It’s a narrow gauge railway running through forestland, over some lovely trestle bridges. If you’re lucky, you might see a Garrat or climax locomotive, but even if you don’t, they run a fleet of cute NA class tank engines. Highly recommended. Cool history to it too. Closest thing Australia has to the tallylynn railway.

Autocoaches were derived from steam railmotors when it was discovered that the steam railmotor service became too popular and couldn't keep up with the demand. The original auto coaches were in fact converted steam railmotors but soon were being built as actual auto coaches from the ground up. Steam railmotors, as you probably know by now were rail carriages with a vertical steam engine or boiler in a cab at one end of the vehicle. They soon proved to be popular but sadly this led to their demise since they were replaced by the aforementioned auto coaches.
So many things about this railway. The station at Totnes isn't in the original place it used to run into the mainline platform but for obvious reasons that can't happen anymore. I was also going to tell you that my grandad works on this railway as a fireman and you see him hanging out the side of the 94xx at 11:44, he worked the line in 1969 when it first went into preservation when it went to ashburton, if you ever see him he will always make the effort to chat to you and he also has a big model railway😂The 94xx is fitted for mainline spec so the cab is filled with electrical wires and buttons my grandad says you can't wash the floor because of this😂The autocoaches have been there since the line re-opened. Whilst on your visit did you see dumbleton hall and 3205 as they are down there, but not running so always being pushed from pillar to post waiting their turn in the restoration chain.

Sam'sTrains they didn't have all of the wiring from the start but they would of had some as it was surprisingly much more modern than it looks, also staverton is a very original station and it was never dismantled when the line shut so that's how it is so original👍
Yup that was a Class 04 shunter Sam, both look quite similar though the 03 has a bump just before the cab on the engine compartment along with other changes but that's the easiest difference to spot in my opinion.

I love GWR Pannier tanks must be because they are a common engine on any great western railway. We have some on the SVR.
From the perspective of someone helping restore carriages us volunteers really want to restore carriages to be as period correct as possible even down to the screws used to hold a door handle in place and to restore them to a high standard so they last 15-20 years in service.

The SDR has always had auto coaches it never used to use them much, It had two sets of coaches a GWR collet/Brown Mk1 set and a second Crimson and Cream set of Mk1s. A few years ago someone opened a toilet door and nearly got seriously injured as the floor was missing(even though the toilet was locked out of use) since then the SDR had taken coaches out of service if they aren't good enough. As such the Autocoaches have seen more of a use, and sometimes PDSR coaches have been hired in.

I’ve just visit the Bluebell Railway during last weekend on Saturday and they had a Giants of Steam weekend with 70000 Britannia and B1 Class 61306 Mayflower in action.
I bought the Bachmann L&Y 2-42 tank in the same livery like yours and cost 80 pound to buy.

My local railway. It’s quite amazing. Can’t wait until they extend it to Ashburton and eventually restore 3803 and Dumbleton Hall.
PS your pronunciation was a bit off but far better than most of the tourists we get. Buckfastleigh is pronounced b-u-ck fastleigh and Staverton is pronounced Sta-ver-ton.

Good one Sam..I think 9466 is from the Buckinghamshire Railway at Quainton road. 9466 is a handsome engine and is my choice. Its good at Totnes to see the more modern XC and GWR stuff go past.

I like the red rods on the LT Pannier Tank. Red rods go well with some locomotives.
The Diesel shunter made me think of Salty or Mavis, they are those kinds of engines.

I do love preserved railways. I love the Severn Valley railway lots because some couliges of ours who work there gave us a tour of the non public spaces and now I feel I know the railway. It was an amazing experience. It is what has made me want to drive one. Do you ever want to drive a steam loco?

Their other panniers 1369 had just entered service and the other one has gone to the west somerset railway, their three tender engines and the prairie are out of service I think.

Buckfastleigh is where all Will's kitsets are made, their factory is there. Not sure how familiar you are with those though since your railway is purely functional instead of modelling (nothing wrong with that by the way).

Totnes Riverside was built by the preservation society after BR stopped them using the mainline Totnes Station. All the platforms and sidings were built from scratch and the station building, canopy, signal box, water crane loos and storage shed were sourced from other disused GWR stations, taken apart and rebuilt at the new station in the 1980s. They called the new station Littlehempston for a while after the nearby hamlet but renamed it Riverside as people would drive to Littlehempston to find there was no access to the station.
Isn’t it a strange feeling to see the full-size version of a car or engine you’d only seen previously in model form?
It certainly was very strange - let alone to climb inside one!

Class 04 aka Drewry Shunter available as a kit from Dapol. I made one when they were in the Airfix range about a 100 years ago. :-) Did the pannier tanks have sprung buffers? I do hope you tested them. ;-)

@@SamsTrains About the same level of detail as the contemporary Tri-ang models. Great fun to build though and teaches you more about how a loco works than buying a RTR model, especially with quartering. :-)

I’ve never heard of the London Transport livery... can you tell me a bit of its history?
It's a weird one - it was just used around the Metropolitan area I believe, on the underground etc!
