  • After Frodo and his companions returned from their quest they found that their home of the Shire had changed and become industrialized and it was now being by ruled by 'the Chief', who was none other than Saruman. And so one of the most peaceful and beloved lands of Middle-Earth was transformed into an industrial wasteland and the Hobbits were oppressed and subjugated by Saruman's ruffians. In today's episode we'll be exploring this event, the true ending of the Return of the King.

    What I love about the Scouring of the Shire is that it shows how far the Hobbits have grown after their adventures, they didn't need Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli or outside help as they had throughout the journey. Instead they rallied their folk and saved their home themselves. It also showed how no matter how some wounds can't be healed and how hatred, Pride and spite can bring a formerly great being like Saruman to a petty and pathetic end.

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, it's a very cool way to tie up the growth and development of the Hobbits and compare the way they've changed since they left the Shire in the first place.

      I think that what it shows is that Melkor's influence always returns like a fading echo as magic slowly leaves middle earth. You just get weaker and weaker dark lords but, the will to dominate never fades. Melkor -> Sauron -> Saruman -> ???
      George Martin criticizes Tolkien for an unrealistic happy ending but, Tolkien shows that evil is still around after the defeat of Sauron and that even the magical bloodline of Numenor is doomed to fade eventually.
      The lead up to Dagor Dagorath is likely to be as bad as any period of Middle Earth if not worse.

      Martin was a being foolish. Has he read the books?
      Happy endings?
      Galadriel (elves in general) leaving Middle Earth forever / fading away.
      Dwarves - diminishing.
      Countless deaths of countless peoples
      Kingdoms and kings lay dead and / or in ruins.
      No final redemption for Gollum
      Frodo / Bilbo with scars far to deep to ever be healed in this world.
      Arwen, after marrying and then widowed by Aragorn, dies alone and forgotten in a cold a empty place that was once her people's lands after longs years of loneliness and permanent separation from her family (father) and he people.
      Saruman dies a pathetic death after once being one of the most revered / esteemed beings in Middle Earth and elsewhere.
      Many Hobbits killed by ruffians etc...
      The Ents go to war one last time with many dying. They (the ents) seemingly never find the Entwives and are thus doomed to fade away / die out forever.
      The list goes on and on...
      Unrealistic happy endings indeed.
      Tolkien knew better than most that all does not usually end well.

    The scouring of the shire is actually a direct representation of Tolkien's childhood home (Sahole on the outskirts of Birmingham).
    As a child he used to play near the mill. However when he returned later in his life the mill was desolated.
    On the banks of the lake near the mill was his favourite tree, that he used to climb. However one day he saw some men cut it down and leave it there. Oh and it was a willow (old man willow perhaps???).

      @@GeekZoneMT I would like to add that (as a local to the area!) its the village of Sarehole, now part of Birmingham. :)
      The local area is also said to have inspired the two towers, as there are two very tall chimneys in the local area. Given that this took place in the early 1900s when he was a very young child, I would say it subconsiously stuck in Tolkien's memory instead of directly inspiring his later works. You see echoes of the Shire in the landscape, but not a direct reflection.

    For me the Scouring has always felt a little bit anachronistic and contemporary compared to the rest of the book. Lotho being called "the Chief" not unlike "Der Fuhrer" or "Il Duce", "Gatherers and Sharers" - a jab at Soviet Collectivization, and Sandyman Mill as critique of industrialization in general. Fortunately the timeless message that rises over them is to not repay evil with evil, which makes it worthwhile.

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I find the details of the Scouring of the Shire here quite interesting. I think it was a wise decision that they left it out of the film, because it wouldn't have really fit with how it presented the War of the Ring's end and the hobbits' return to the Shire after the war. I find Saruman's film death satisfying and well-placed into the film's version of events, but I also really love Saruman's death in the Scouring where we see how far he's fallen and where he's given a chance to find his way back to the light when Frodo shows him mercy. I also rather like how the Scouring makes the Shire out to be like a Depression-free version of isolationist America during WWII (both seek to avoid trouble by detaching itself from the outside world, but that only leads to the outside world's war choosing to come to them), rather than a peaceful western haven - basically, I feel the Scouring of the Shire is a message about how you can't hope to escape greater-scope problems like the War of the Ring by burying your head in the sand.

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I think it was a smart decision to leave it out of the film. I've actually wondered quite often whether Saruman had any chance of redemption had he not died at Wormtongue's hands.

    • @cgustin1899

      How did Saruman lose so much power as a Maia that he was able to be killed this way? Balrogs and even dragons required a lot to kill them. His power wasn’t tied to the ring?

    • @ecthox-1mork909
      @ecthox-1mork909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cgustin1899 I think there are a couple reasons.
      (1) Balrogs were aligned with Morgoth, and by extension the Dark Power that remained permanently dispersed in Arda. Saruman was aligned with no-one but himself, a meagre Maia traitor, when he died.
      (2) Balrogs were probably forced into their forms by Morgoth and couldn't change them from then on, and the Balrogs' forms were meant to wield and rely on a lot of raw power as with most things Morgoth utilised. Unlike with the wizards, who were meant to do the opposite, minimising use of their magical power. The Valar probably placed lasting limitations on the five wizards' innate power when they were sent to Middle-Earth, and not all of them came undone when Saruman turned from their mission.

    While unfortunate neither the Scouring of the Shire wasn't included, it's also a shame the Barrows arc wasn't included either. The later showed the hobbits' inexperience towards the evils of the world, while the former showed how much they had grown and became knowledgeable of how to deal with awful situations. Both of these events really helped illustrate their journey from being weak and unreliable, to wise and dependable.

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah I'd have loved to see the Barrow Downs, it's one of my favourite parts of the book! Though I imagine it would be hard to cover without including the Old Forest and Tom Bombadil, so it's understandable why they decided to leave it out.

      @ecthox-1mork909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even if The Scouring of the Shire was a nice allusion to that war affects even ones hometown/country and that it symbolized the "destruction" of Birmingham where Tolkien grew up in, turning from a lush country side to an industrial hell-hole, it wouldn't have worked in the movies as it would be anti-climatic as the main story of the whole trilogy was The Destruction of the Ring and Sauron being the main villian. Many veiwers felt that the end of The Return of the King was too long with "multiple endings" (though it was necessary to wrap up the trilogy as a whole, not just the last film and was great the way it was) so including The Scouring of the Shire would have made the film EVEN LONGER, about 15 to 20 minutes extra which would have put off many more and even worse, so it was a good decision to not include it. The concept wasn't entirely leftout as in The Fellowship of the Ring, The Scouring was seen in The Mirror of Galadriel as it was something that would happen if Sauron would get the Ring back to avenge the Hobbits (which is sort of in the book, as something Gandalf told Frodo that would be something Sauron would do when he found out about the Hobbits, when they where previoudly were unknown to him and if he knew back then he would not pay much attention to as he wouldn't see them as useful slaves as the orcs).
    The death of Saurman at Isengard was handled very well as they didn't stray away too far from the books, only appeared earlier. Unlike the book, Wormtounge instead of slitting the throat, he stabs Saruman in the back, this was changed for rating reasons as slitting throats would not be suitable for PG-13 rating (hence why in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl the act of Barbosa's men slitting the Dauntless guards was not shown, but occured off-screen). Also the way Saruman falls from the top of Orthanc and lands of a spike of a destroyed wheel, is both symbolic and a reference. The sympolism is that the wheel of Saruman's industraliation of Isengard, used to create his army of Uruk-Hai, which was that the thing that he created killed him off and as a way of showing of Tolkien's way how in the industry or overdependment of it will be your downfall. The reference is to Christopher Lee played Dracula in the Hammer Horror Films as he was stabbed through his heart with a stake by Van Helsing (played by his friend the late Peter Cushing, also known for playing Moff Tarkin in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope).
    On a side note: Saruman's nickname Sharkey is divered from the Black Speech word Sharku meaning Old Man, which was something that his orcs called him in Isengard and also is the name of the Warg Rider Leader in The Two Towers movie (played Jed Brophy also did Snaga, several other orcs, several Gondor and Rohirrim riders including the soilder finding Théodred in the extended edition of The Two Towers, Nori in The Hobbit Trilogy and appeared in other Peter Jackson movies including Braindead/Dead Alive and King Kong).

    The one major complaint I have about the movie version vs. the books(I have several smaller ones) is excluding the scouring of the shire completely. This could've been in the movie or at least a part of the extended version. Or at the least, why worry about Frodo witnessing it in movie one if it doesn't happen in movie three. That made it as anticlimactic as some people say the three long endings were drawn out. I wanted to see the rest of the Shire grow due to the experience. I'm sure if this was included in the movies, it would ruin a good ending, Frodo and the viewers suffered enough.
    Saruman had to die, he earned it and those who watched the movies were demandin it....but the absolute COMICAL way he went out was way below his stature. Grima stabbing him and confessing his hate towards him, while Saruman slowly realises what he had done, would have made for a much better scene.

    I think to properly portray these events would have required a separate movie, it couldn't have been jammed into Return of the King in a satisfying way. And the hobbits' return to a desolated Shire would have been out of place in the "happy ending" sequence if it was just left unresolved, so I think the way the movies handled it was a reasonable adjustment. Lacks the punch of the original, but brings Saruman's story to a fitting conclusion.

    The Scourging of The Shire shows that even though Sauron was defeated, a part of his influence was still felt even in lands as far as The Shire itself. I know that Saruman was acting out on his own when the Scourging Of The Shire took place, but take note that through his use of the Palantir, Saruman became Sauron’s puppet, even though the wizard himself thought he was fully in control of his own actions. Yes, Sauron knew that Saruman would betray him in time, but to Sauron, the so called “Wizard Of Many Colors” was merely a tool, an instrument of his will whose usefulness would eventually come to an end.

    The films did a fine job with their adaptation. I won't say one is objectively better than the other (I personally find Tolkien to be really arduous to read most of the time), but the film did enough with the "industrialization BAD" elements with Treebeard's commentary in Isengard. It also let the story end with the destruction of the Ring and everything gets tied up, rather than there being another 45-60 minutes of random conflict that would need to be set up and resolved. I mean, it would be like an action movie where the Big Baddie Gangster is dealt with with massive explosions and gunfire, and then there's a 30 minute post-credit scene where The Hero beats up a random guy trying to steal $50 from a 7 Eleven.
    In general, I feel the films did a better job at being films than the books did at being books.

    • @GeekZoneMT

      Your comment mentioning the Hero beating up a small thief reminds me of something I once heard about the different kinds of peace. I can't remember specifics, but it was talking about how sure, the Big Bad Evil Overlord has been killed, the Hero marries the princess, and everyone lives Happily Ever After, but just because Sauron, for example, isn't spewing smog everywhere, that doesn't mean little evils aren't happening everywhere making people's lives miserable. Someone needs to be the cop on the street (what poor timing) making sure the little folk aren't getting bullied. Pretty sure it was a Goblin Slayer discourse video.

      As an elementary school librarian it was hard going trying to introduce kids even to just _The Hobbit_. Then I found a set of audiotapes "reading" the books ( in quote marks because it was an edited and shortened version) and played it for the upper grades every Friday for weeks.
      After that, I couldn't keep the books on the shelves. Tolkien's language is intricate but with some groundwork the kids could handle it. Even bought one copy of the Silmarillion. The LOTR as well of course.
      We ended up with 5 copies of _The Hobbit_ and they were constantly out. That was useful as it was another way to send kids to the public library, hopefully developing life long library users.
      Such fun!

    I read here that many people think leaving this part of the story out of the movies was a good thing to do, and I have to disagree.
    The Scouring of the Shire is very important to the overall tale of The Lord of the Rings. In it you see how the long, dangerous journey and the exposure to different peoples and cultures have changed each individual hobbit. They are strong in ways they would never have recognized as they ride home. They left as innocent and silly boy-men and returned as seasoned warriors, survivors of what could have been a global catastrophe. So these are no longer "simple" country folk, but leaders, fighters, hobbits of courage and fortitude. Worse, Saruman's death as it was portrayed was, to me, no more than a Hollywood shortcut. The real tragedy of Saruman, as portrayed in the book, is his decent from a powerful, masterful, deep, and subtle mind to a petty shadow of himself content to bully and terrorize. Even though we meet him after the years of being under Sauron's influence, he is still terribly dangerous.
    However, in the feature the Saruman we see is defeated but we don't understand how far he has really fallen, or the depth of his true degradation. We know he's been influencing events in the Shire, First Galadriel showed it in her mirror and then Merry and Pippen find pipeweed in the Isengard storehouses. Yet, when our movie hobbits finally return home there is little or no visible, long lasting effect of the corruption these transactions effected. The facts that had been hinted prove to be of no importance. We're actually expected to dismiss and forget them. The four hobbits fought for Middle Earth as an abstract concept, but when it turns out they had no personal irons in that fire what they have learned isn't nearly as important. Their own homes were unchanged and and their friends unaffected by the terror they so narrowly avoided.
    Therefore, I feel that the scouring of the Shire SHOULD have been included in the film series. The points of the length of the film and the multiple ending problem while valid, do not show us how MUCH or how DEEPLY the war of the Rings changed Frodo, Sam, Merry, or Pippen. That, to me, seems a disservice. Therefore, I think it could have been included, perhaps in an abbreviated form, and in a way which would have blended into the final tale of Frodo's trip to the Grey Havens. I, for one, truly missed this penultimate portion of the tale.

    is a really good chapter in the books, but i feel for a cinematic point of view, it would be really long and it would´t make a lot meaning at the end, maybe if it was a series of the lotr, i will find it more fitting, and Sarumans death in the movies is a really good scene, and the end result is the same, but with more meaning in a narrative perspective because it follows the great evil deads of Saruman and his deserved ending. At the end i think the Peter jackson aproach was better for a movie, but in a history perspective, both version have something strong about it, and i like both

    The Scouring of the Shire would have been too much, added to a film (Return of the King) that already had so much going on, it would have felt anti-climactic, and unnecessary. I would have loved to see the scouring of the shire in the movies. When I watched them for the first time, that was my biggest disappointment.
    However, I agree with their decision not to include it but for different reasons.
    It's a complete story within itself, with a beginning, middle and end. And there are many new characters that would have needed introducing. The first half doesn't have any pre-existing characters (in the movies) at all.
    It would require 30-60 minutes of runtime to do it justice. If they tried to tack it on the end of RotK in 10 minutes it would have been really bad. Given that, I'm content with the ending they chose.
    Instead I would have loved to see them do it as a 30-60 minute DVD extra 'alternate ending'. They could have even had a small theatrical release for it, probably coming out a month or two after the main movie.

The return to the known is the most important part of the hero's journey. So is the hobbits gaining agency over the protection of their own lands.
    The entire LotR story leads up to this end. Tolkien tells us here that you may go on great adventures, you may do great deeds, and when you return home you will have more to do; and that even after you set all things right, home will never be the same to you as you have gone on great adventures, seen wondrous things and done great deeds.
