    I have my grandma’s cookie cutters and they are exactly like the ones Erin used. I get nostalgic this time of year because I used to bake with my grandma and my mom, both have passed. Thanks to Erin, I have become a better baker and gained about 20lbs🤦‍♀️ Last Christmas I made cookie boxes as gifts for my family and friends. They loved them so much that I have requests for the same thing this year! There is nothing like homemade gifts for the holidays! I went as far as drawing and painting my Christmas cards, designed cardboard goodie boxes, making delicious treats and created new traditions with my husband and his family. Thank you Food52, Bake it up a notch, Bite size and most of all Erin Jean McDowell (who has become my most inspirational baking guru, no joke)

      I’ve made cookies with the grandkids every year for, I’m guessing, 25 or -6 years now and have a huge tin of cutters. I hope my grandkids feel as much love from them when I’m not around as Erin obviously does her own grandmother’s. ❣️

    Ms. McDowell was/is my secret weapon when feeling down during Covid. When things felt at their most frustrating and worrisome, it was time to “bring out the big guns”. And to watch this lovely woman, make something warm, sweet, and comforting and to be heartened by her delightful sense of humour, just made things better. I appreciated her presence more than I can say : )

    I got a big smile on my face when you held up the bag of cookie cutters, Erin. Even before you pulled any out I could see that there were many of the same ones that I that I have used since I was a little girl of 5 or 6 helping Mommy make Christmas cookies. I inherited all of the cookie cutters that my parents had, as well as all the discs for the cookie press. (The original press died long ago, so I have a modern replacement but the discs fit just fine.) This year I am passing on some of the cookie cutters on to my daughter so she can make memories and cookie with her kids. (She'll have to wait for the rest--hopefully for another 20 years or so.)

    I just made this dough and it’s chilling in the fridge. Molasses isn’t as common in Australia, and of course I couldn’t get it when I wanted it, so I used golden syrup instead. My dough is very soft and sticky, so hopefully it works out once it’s chilled and then baked. Can’t wait to find out.

    Just baked these, but made them vegan! They turned out wonderful!
    I followed the recipe exactly except for the substitutions (but in equal amounts to the written recipe).
    Substitutions:
    - flax egg instead of chicken egg (1 tbsp flax meal to 3 tbsp water, let sit 10 mins)
    - Earth Balance vegan spread instead of butter

    its really just easier to roll it out all the way inbetween large sheets of parchment paper, THEN refridgerate. that way you can cut and transfer them while its still super cold right out of the fridge. i dont know why more people dont do that. you dont even need to add any bits of flour, other than only the cookie cutter.

      If you’re scared of using raw egg whites, try making your royal icing with meringue powder! It’s available online or at baking supply/craft stores. It’s shelf stable so your icing will still be great long past the cookies! TBH, I store cookies made with egg white royal icing at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Without icing they may be good for up to 2, stored well!

    • @minamax
      @minamax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@erin-jeanne-mcdowell thank you Erin for your detailed reply!! This gives me a great timeline of when I can start prepping these cookies. By the way, made I made a small batch of these to try (without icing). The flavor and taste were wonderful 👍. However, perhaps the flour sold in Japan is to blame (I read somewhere that the AP flour in Japan is more like cake flour in the US ), but the dough was incredibly sticky. Didn’t look like the one in the video. So I kept adding more and more flour. Will try it again for sure !! Love your recipes and your personality Erin 💕! Thank you for the wonderful videos 😚
