I wish you lived closer to me!(Oregon,USA),we both have the same methodology to repair work, and I love my Triumphs!.(52 and 71 650's currently). A word about regulator/rectifiers and frying stators (like the overheated one in this video) I have a Honda CX650c,goes thru stators every 10 years,at 102k miles and 30+ years old it is on the third stator-amazingly it is the same stator and reg/rect setp as yours ,and the same (wassel) setup on my '52 right now. I learned something about Japanese solid state regulators this winter-there are TWO types---WHAT!? you say?--me too- ONE type allows and takes all the stator has to offer in amps ALL the time ,and dissipates excess amps and volts thru it's finned body as HEAT (as my CX650C honda),so the stator is at max output all the time, and as you know ,if power has a place to "go" or is accepted by the regulator ,the stator will get a tad HOT. SECOND type of regulator--only takes and gives(charge voltage and amps) AS NEEDED!!-so when demand is low from the bikes system,so to is it from the poor stator-this regulator/rectifier is the "shunt" type-check Shindengen SH775's (SH = "shunt"). I am now looking at changing out the reg/rect on my Honda and Bonnie and '52!! Keep up the good work!--PS,I have a great fix for an oil seal on the older trumps which only have a bushing in the timing cover, and this takes care of a bad crank-tip all in one swoop!---keep in touch and keep the rubber side down!!
+laszlosworld Hi Lazlo :-) great tips in your post I'll check out that Shindengen SH775 thank you. The old Lucas stator is holding up fine for now, I think there may be a problem with these particular wassel stators as I have come across others on forums with the same problem burned and cracked, I will admit they are a budget price but the quality is a bit, well er not what I expected. I cannot fault the wassel rotor though it knocked the spots off my 40 yr old lucas one. ride safe and enjoy
+lunmad good to hear it may have been a bad batch!-the Wassel stator and rotor I installed on my '52 6t is still working well after 2 years and 6000 miles!-it's nice to see miles ahead with my halogen versus the old 6V genny setup-which kept flinging the armature apart every few years!
Hi J, You should contact Wassel and complain, lay it on thick tell them you were stranded miles from anywhere and it cost a fortune to be rescued, that sort of thing. See if they offer a new one or compensation? Bet they don't. Dave
A frends has got one they are a lot of fun on the rally field. yer my friends was seized to but with a bit of TLC it works quite well. I have a TH-cam page I have uploaded some videos take a look some time all the best Aaron
lunmad it cracks me up that my Irish in me came out in how I phrased that.. It's weird how sometimes it just shows up.. hopefully I will catch it on camera one day when I suddenly sound like I'm straight off a boat from the island and the harder I try to fight it the stronger my accent gets until I'm thinking I'm speaking English but I'm not.. It's pretty funny and cool sounding yet I can't begin to fake any sort of accent :P
Well, at least you had the old stator to replace the new one. WTF.....I never could figure out why a stator does that from time to time but shit does happen when dealing with the creation of electricity and heat. I was once told that it all begins with one little weak spot in the coiling wire of the stator and then just multiplies from there. A hard rain is so depressing but then again I guess it could be snow and that sucks even more than rain.
EdOfTheNorth Aye back to the old faithful Lucas prince of brightness! once the insulation starts breaking down arcs from shorts do the rest. It was a bute cloud burst and that rain was warm!
Hahaha.....typical "tea tank"John......if you can't find it,try next to the kettle first!! Lol At least that downpour gave you chance to put the kettle on......again! Hehehe between you&Guy Martin, you keep the tea industry in business:-) Another great video John, keep up the great work:-)
Hello Lunmad, I have replaced the primary chain on my 70' Triumph Tiger. The new chain is really tight. It was tricky getting the 20 bearing's to go in but got them in and I have got the chain tightener as loose as possible...Still very tight chain. should I attempt to run it hoping it will stretch a bit or would it cause other problems like bearing wear or the like? Thanks in advance. Your video's are a great help. S
Hi Mac :-) a new chain is pretty tight, as long as it is not bar tight I would give it a short run (round the block) and check it. When a chain rollers are full of lube (grease) there is very little movement. For a five minute run in the shed you could run it with no case on be careful doing this, not much more than a tickover is needed.
Come and get your tan from standing in the English rain, I would take that weather over the shit we are putting up with here in New Jersey it's about 100 degree heat index that's with this bloody humidity to hot to ride Motorcycles Can't wait for part 3.
steve kwall Aye there's been a bit of welding going on. The air is hot and thin so you don't get as much in, so it is probably a bit rich. I've got a couple nearly ready, what do you reckon? ride or repair.
John Mitchell Hi John :-) I got to agree with you the gaiters I'm using are wassell they are a bit thin but better than nowt, we'll have to see how long they last.
Ulrich Brock Hoffmeyer Hi Ulrich :-) fine cracks i would not usually worry about. You want to do the DC voltage test you want around 50v at 4000rpm or there abouts. Do the test every ride or so, if it is a worsening fault the voltage will start dropping, or it may just fail. If the voltage is stable it could be ok.
Bloody hell, John, that's been on no time at all and the bugger failed. You'd think it was an Enfield part! Now don't apologise for having to upload 4 instead of 3 videos, that's no hardship for those of us who'll devour anything you post instantly. I remember those storms, it's been a shit summer by and large, as soon as the Solstice came and went, that was the weather all to cock. See you soon mate eh?
Oy!!! I've got a Royal Enfield (that's where the Queen keeps her chooks) lol. Parts are far better these days anyway depending on where you get them. Probably more Enfields than Bonnies on the road too? He he he. Dave
notwocdivad Hi Dave, yes I was very much self deprecating there as I currently have a 500 Bullet myself. I get all my parts from Hitchcocks and they're faultless in their advice and service. An amazing company. As a bullet owner I'm sure you're aware that some of the factory parts are to a certain extent, made of cheese! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Enfield and I've just about managed to keep up with John on his Bonnie on it (just). I'm glad you're still riding and I've enjoyed your video's many times! All the very best Peter
pgod1960 Hi Peter, yep Hitchcocks may be more expensive but they are the doggies danglers when it comes to good stuff. Mine is a 2005 Sixty-5 last of that model wouldn't mind a new Continental GT though. I put comfort and mpg above mph at my age, (rushing up to 65) Cheers mate Dave
Hi Lufkin :-) sorry you feel that way, the ads help pay for my internet so I can upload these vids but believe me I would rather be riding my bike than uploading vids. Making the vids also adds lots of time to the repairs, which I could better use riding.

Hi Dave :-) I've had my whinge now to see what happens. Maybe they'll swap it.
I love your old rammer mate would love one myself but u don't see then about. Keep up the hard work loving the videos nice to see u are keeping well
Aaron Ryder
Hi Aaron :-) a Benjo rammer great in heavy clay.
That one is seized solid, if could un-seize the mag
it would have half a chance of going.
A frends has got one they are a lot of fun on the rally field. yer my friends was seized to but with a bit of TLC it works quite well. I have a TH-cam page I have uploaded some videos take a look some time all the best Aaron
that rain... coming down like a heifer pissing on a flat rock it was.
OtisENGINEuity
Funny I've remember that one, I say pissin stair rods.

steve kwall Hi Steve :-) 100deg I'd have to go in a sauna to experience that!
At least the rain is only wet
steve kwall Yeah I know what you mean there's forrest fires everywhere in western Canada.
Hi John, It has been pretty hot here, Triumph don't like this type of weather .Hope all is well ,can't wait till your next video .

lunmad repair then ride I myself and a lot of your followers learn so much about these wonderful machines your the greatest.
Just fitted a wassell throttle grip to a cub I have..seriously awful quality.

Started watching 1 thru 4 but got sick of all the commercials ..

Get yer money back on that. Is it made in China?
jtreg
Hi jtreg :-) we'll see what happens, I'd prefer a swap and give it a chance.
Cut the crap out and get on with it boring!!
