Here's a tip. Get yourself a nice big root with a big ol knob at one end, and start whittling. Save the chips for the tea, of course, BUT...whittle it into a rough spoon or paddle shape. Then use that spoon/paddle and stir your apple butter/peach butter/pear butter, etc... with your sassafrass spoon. There is nothing quite like butters and preserves made with a good ol sassafrass spoon. :) When the spoon starts to get old and loose it's flavor, whittle off the exterior and keep stirring. Eventually of course, you'll just have a good ol wooden spoon which is fine and dandy and you can get yourself another sassafrass root and start again.
If you're lucky enough to be able to find a sassafras tree Bush growing wild in the woods or a tree they grow pretty tall. Dig up some of the root take that to your home and plant it in the ground in your backyard and it will grow you a bush that will soon grow into a fluffy tree so that you can pick off all of the leaves that you need to make your homegrown file powder---for Creole gumbo
When we 1st moved up on the hill in Lowell back when I was in going into 1st grade We moved into a tent on 40 aches. My Dad & Mom & us 3 kids. Anyways listening to this man talk of Sassafras is the way my Dad did to us kids as my mom making tea of the root over the fire... Thank you for sharing... Big hugs...
other than the leaf shape. I always use smell as a identifier. if you rub the leaves of a sassafras, your hand smells like lemon. hope this helps others. love me some sassafras tea.
So funny you posted this video today. My dad passed away 4 months ago on February 27th. His favorite tea was sassafras. We used to go hiking in the woods to find it. I miss him a lot.
Sorry about your Dad. I miss my family too. Isn't funny how things can remind you of people? When I miss someone specifically in my I use different things that remind me of them. I spritz old spice on a tissue and leave it in the house when I miss my Dad. I use Oil of Olay shower soap when I miss my Mom. I use Tone soap when I miss the youngest of my older brothers. I use Safeguard soap when I miss the older brother. Lol I have a ton of soaps, teas, perfumes/colognes or foods for when I miss my family. Lol
Thank you! I am sorry about your family too. Yes it's funny how our loved ones find a way to show us they're still with us. My sister in law passed in May of 2016. She was only 45 and it was so devastating to us all. Her favorite color was purple and a month after she died I took my dogs for a walk down by our pond and there were these little purple flowers everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE! I have lived at our little place for 23 years and have never ever seen these flowers before! I don't know what kind they were, and they haven't returned this year.
Very interesting thanks for interviewing him talking about Sassafras, and how to make the tea.I have had the tea,and the candy. It is an acquired taste.I like it.Take care you all.♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡...........
Really well done! We learned a lot from this video. We just found a sassafras tree on our land and now we know what to look for. Ours was dead so no leaves left. Thanks so much. Love these videos.
I love love love sassafras tea! Where I lived in Ohio, we has a family that own a family ran factory that made and shipped sassafras tea all over America and other countries, I believe they are in business.. I left there in 2000. Very interesting..
From canning we all know about a rolling boil. But who knew that before the boil was the roll? Well I knew the water was moving like that. But who knew it had a name... The Roll! Now we know... Too cool! Love ❤ Jim too. Xoxo
She went "Purple Rain" on me. I miss Prince. sigh. I had some of this tea when I was a young teen. We gathered the tree bits from our backyard and enjoyed. Freezes well also.
❤❤❤❤❤ Loved this video! Encore! Encore! Learning what they knew back in the day is what it is all about. I would love to hear about each of the other bottles that he had on the table. Especially the ones that have medicinal value. I loved hearing about all the other aspects of living back then from the other experts, but I especially wanted to hear the "talk" from the chicken lady with the pretty white silky on her table. Thanks for all your sharing.xoxo
Loved this THANK YOU Patara,Miss my Grand paw He would go out in the woods and come back and make us sassafras tea. Not had none in years .now I want some LOL

oh yummm! My Mawmaw and Pawpaw made me sassafras tea. They also made fresh sassafras candy. I loved it. I can't get sassafras root, or tea where I am now. I miss it.
I have so much sassafras I don't know what to do with it all. I collect the leaves to dry for grinding into File' Powder along with digging the roots for making tea.
the mitten shaped leaf is the easy one to spot the single and triple look like other trees please don't mistake a poplar tree and make poplar tea uggghh... i imagine
I think I need me a cup or two right about now. I think you are needing a couples cups or so right at about the time you are interrogating this fellow.
LOVE this lesson!!

When we walked the backroads as kids we would break off a sassafras twig to clean our teeth with, as well as freshen the breath.

No more medicinal use? What about a sweat inducer? Pretty important and notable quality.

Probably artificially flavored
Be sure to check with the chemist and also a warning for overdosing on this root is an important warning./
I am a Cajun I know what I'm talking about
For people wanting to make homemade root beer there is an artificial bottle of extract located in better grocery stores
This guy should have his own You Tube page
Jim is family & I agree! xo
A chemist told me that there is a slight element of arsenic in sassafras root.
Patara - would you consider trying to make real root beer? I would love to see it done, have never had the ingredients to try :-)

I've always heard that for the best flavor you need to dig the root in the fall when the leaves start falling. Anyone know if that's true?
