aCtUAlLy Guuuh guh. Dante gained power by fusing/absorbing their father's sword, the ugly ass, Sword Sparda, when he stabbed himself with the broken Rebellion. ( i cant take a joke, i know i know :P )
something to add - when Vergil was attacked as a child, it was his devil trigger which saved him, which I don't think its had to argue that that solidified a notion of "the demon keeps me safe" as a sort of emotional shield or crutch., as it wasn't other people or Dante or his mother which saved him, it was himself and only a part himself which allowed him to survive. If only he had control of it sooner, he could have protected them as well. Reading deeply into the DMC3 line "Foolishness Dante, foolishness. Might controls everything, and without strength you cannot protect anything, let alone yourself." develops, to me, Vergil's hierarchy of needs, which I believe holds true for DMC5. Vergil's mother died because he wasn't strong, he was a liability that caused his own traumatic childhood, in his mind, so: If you are strong, you can protect yourself, and not cause others to suffer on your behalf. If you are stronger still, you can protect others from a situation of even being presented the choice of suffering on your behalf. culminating in "if i'm strong enough, an emotional bond can never cause pain". In my mind, a crystalline coping mechanism, writ large. For Vergil, I never got the notion that he wanted power for power's sake, even in a sense of satisfying a complex, what I think he wants is control. it just happens that power allows a lot of control. Control is also all over Vergil's mannerism, speech patterns, posture, fighting style, hair style, even the written word is a far more controlled method of expression. He values control, the concept of control and, consciously or otherwise, displays control. To him, power is the currency of control, not the other way around, as he never revels in the display of power nor in the feeling of it, unlike Arkham. Fast forward to DMC5, we have a Vergil who clearly has power, but is losing control. (easily tossing and ripping Nero's arm off, but also degrading rapidly) He doesn't have the strength to protect himself, he's back at the base of his hierarchy of needs. So, in order to regain control, he gain's power. And it seems like he knew the full plan prior to separation, human form will buy time while the demon gains strength, to then rejoin at a later time. Once Vergil is in control of himself again he takes no issue with destroying the very thing which granted him power. Given how V had the memories, but not Urizen, strikes me as a very specific point on his psychology, that his humanity is in control, always. If demon and human sides were unified, one would expect both to consciously have some memories, but this is not the case as is seen in the eating of the fruit scene. The fruit seemed to create an illusion of the setting which is the purpose of gaining power, Vergil's childhood home - power to protect. But Urizen wasn't conscious of it, to speculate further, this tells us that Vergil treats his demonhood as a tool, and nothing more, to protect his humanity and what he values. On the surface one can say Vergil's humanity is weak and his demonic side is more of what Vergil is , but I think that's incorrect. I think V is so frail because Vergil is overly protective of his humanity, he's never wanting to risk it, instead, he keeps his demon side at arms-length, controlled, and develops that to protect himself. edit: to add, I think the reason we see him grow as a character by reflecting on top of the tree is that his humanity finally had its own experiences and growth on its own, without relying on the demon side to handle or shield him. He took a walk outside of his shell.
@@khotunkhan3950 I'm pretty sure that this whole time they're hinting and saying that they're now even. Eg. "Where did you learn how to count? We're even"
Vergil doesn't want to lose to Dante. so when he saw Dante looking old and have a beard, Vergil thought "this... this is my chance to best him", and immediately use Yamato to shave so he can look younger than Dante
I love that lil wistful tone to his voice when Vergil says to Dante that he is perfectly capable of handling this by himself. And Dante just shrugs and says he's to need some help. The motion Vergil makes just before the twins get attacked again is almost hesitant. The man has the emotional range of a teacup. But including (and yes I know it is not canon) seeing the stiff and awkward body language of Vergil as he sits next to Nero in the van is a perfect example that he is in fact a very timid socially awkward man who can't communicate his feelings properly
Teacup LMAO You're absolutely right. His awkward mannerisms are even referenced in PXZ2, where he often stays silent and lets Dante speak on his behalf (not because he's _shy,_ per se, but... he certainly doesn't grasp conversation etiquette LOL he's very blunt and what is expected of him in a social environment escapes him at times).
I just wanna share this quote which I firmly believe that Vergil will accept and agree: "Suffering exist only because weakness exist. You must hate all weakness. Hate it in others but most of all...hate it in yourself". - Ozunu
DHAVAL KOTAK Then seeing a pattern Dante says. “...! I need sleep...” Virgil: “I NEED MORE SLEE.... wait....” Then they get into a napping contest and have a great nights sleep. That should be a comic actually now that I think about it.
@@dhavalkotak1751 well yeah sure it has to do with that i line, just wanted to point out, that it fits perfectly with the line from the first dmc where eva asks "who wants chocolate"
I think it's also interesting to analyze his Demon half - Urizen. Vergil didn't just cast out his human half but everything he saw as weak within himself. The Nightmares that V uses to fight, the fact Urizen doesn't even remember the house he grew up in, the fact Urizen went on to give the Nelo Angelo treatment to Lady and Trish. All those memories went to V, Urizen was left with no distractions other than his mission of gaining more power and beating Dante. Of course the irony here is that all those memories and feelings are what kept V moving forward despite his body on the cusp of breaking down with every step of the way. Can't wait for the Nero episode! Nero perfectly combines the two brother's motivation: Gain more **Power** *to* **Protect** others.
FatalFist V didn’t seem to expect it. And he specified Vergil didn’t either. That the creation of Urizen was a very unexpected event that scared, even himself, at his birth
DMC2 feels like a filler arc tbh lol. It adds a bit of context on why after 1 and especially the anime (yes i watched it and im not disappointed) Dante seems to silent. Even in the early parts of DMC4 where Dante oddly silent all the time when fighting Nero.
"... he was willing to even tear his own son's arm off for power." To be fair, Vergil didn't know Nero was his son. Doubt it would have stopped him in that moment but it kind of takes off the edge of this action.
I think Vergil would still have gotten Yamato but not cut his son's arm off Vergil would have asked Nero to help him get stronger without splitting up into V and Urizen Vergil opens a portal to hell and he and his son would find a way for the father to become stronger
... and in the words of Dante, “Oh, brother... you cut your own son’s arm off for more power... and you still lost (to Nero)...” I say it was a cool fight though.
@@christiandauz3742 Indeed, maybe Dmc 4 and 5 may have been different in storyline or might not have any reason to exist. I argue that misfortune has funny ways of bringing about great stories and characters. I’m replaying Dmc 3 at this time on my Switch and am quite impressed so far.
I'm thinking that if he knew Nero was his son/had a little more time, i.e. wasn't _literally about to die in what may have been just a few h o u r s,_ he would have summoned the Yamato from Nero's arm instead of ripping it off as a shortcut. Maybe even try to speak with Nero, but that's unlikely because convincing someone takes precious time Vergil didn't have. He must have realised on some level that Nero is not fully human, since the arm is evidently demonic, but he would have had no time to contemplate Nero's features or the van or any context clues that would lead him to believe Nero was his son. After all, even for Dante, it was the Yamato DT that confirmed Nero was Vergil's son - and Vergil never saw that reaction because he took the Yamato back. TL;DR: Neither Vergil nor Nero can ever catch a break, wtf
So Vergil is just an angry child too emotionally immature to accept that he felt weak and scared? Actually now the ending of DMC 5 does make more sense, okay just the part where Virgil just goes along with what Nero wants. Nero was very clearly trying to stop the two of them because he cared about them. Maybe it finally clicked for Vergil that that's why Dante has been fighting him all this time, because they just want him to take a fucking chill pill.
Not really immature, he's more or less blinded by trauma, the fact he never wants to feel the same way, him hesitating to start another battle with Nero and listening to what he says adds character to him because he doesn't want to be seen as weak upon his defeat. Vergil does make a massive character change at the end though, you can see him finally submitting to feeling joy again, where you can see a genuine smile on his face for a very very long time.
Also the fact that the animals V used were personifications of Vergils trauma and nightmares and in the end of DMC5 they refused to combine back with Vergil and suicided by Dante, and I think that really helped with his mental state. Would love if this was further explored in DMC6
I think the best part about Vergil in the end is that when he was remade by Urizen and V reuniting, he was actually a lot more human in action than before. I mean, the very fact that he even questions his and Dante's fates being different is proof enough. All the character development that V went through was brought into Vergil's character as well. And I dunno about you, but Dante seemed to actually _like_ Vergil by the end of it. He seemed happy to fight with him in Hell for who knew how long, and it _wasn't_ a fight to the death. It just... looked like brotherly sparring, filled with a competitive but not angry edge. I mean for fuck's sake; VERGIL SMILED AT DANTE AND EVERYTHING. More than once and without sarcasm or hate to be seen. They're both still noticeably different from each other, but I think if nothing else, Vergil's ideology evolved to be more like Nero's and Dante's; gain power not to never be emotional or inferior again, but to protect that which is important and cared for in your life. After all, I'm quite sure Vergil discovered a care for Nero through V's own helpful friendship with the boy, and saw enough respect in Dante to actually care for him as well. Or, at least, to not hate him anymore. But, I'm not incredibly introspective nor all that versed in DMC first-hand. The only one I've played was DMC5 even though I've watched a good deal of the others, though I still feel like Vergil is a different person when he finally reemerges at the end of the game. Different than any incarnation of himself ever before. And, probably as a surprise to himself, he'll likely just get stronger from from his human half being more prominent. EDIT: Oh, and, also? I think it's pretty neat in a subtle way that Vergil and Dante respectively separate and combine in someway in their home, but Vergil has his back to the painting of his family as he separates, while Dante faces it as he combines with Devil Sword Sparda and transforms.
The Darkness never noticed that little detail at the end.... A lot of his therapy came from creating those creatures... hence his most formidable one “Nightmare” They even say that after you kill them as Dante at the end.... “We’re merely Vergil’s DISCARDED thoughts”
You gotta love how DMC 5 introduces Vergil with the title, "The Alpha and Omega", you know, one of the actual titles used to describe God. It seems even Capcom understands how much everyone loves Vergil
That's not the reason for "The Alpha and the Omega". These two are letters of the Ancient Greek alphabet. The Alpha is in the beginning, and the Omega is at the end. It shows that Vergil was there in the very beginning, and he is going to be there in the very end.
It's a reference to the Book of Revelation, the final book in the bible. It means the beginning and the end, signifying Vergil started it all and will be at the end. Much like Virgil guided Dante through Inferno and Purgatorio in Divine Comedy until Dante reached Paradiso. Dante song calls him the Omega, in DMC terms, that's them always fighting in the end. It's just a simple biblical reference, it has nothing to do with describing Vergil as God.
He is giving the title alpha and omega. Because by him separating his demon half from human half. It created a whole new demon king. Vergil is the reason there even is a Devil May Cry 5. He’s basically the beginning of everything that started with the demon out break.
Vergil was shown in the manga to love poetry specifically in the manga. He went so far as to write his name in the back of a poetry book just so dante wouldnt take it. He stopped by a poetry shop DAILY just to read it. Vergils trauma also can come from the fact that he was stabbed with his own sword by devils. Sadly for them it awakened his demon powers and he quickly murdered them all. Another thing to note is Vs demons. They carry the nightmares from his days as mundus servent. Its a hold of his weakness. His powerlessness. Thus its important to note he cast that off as well. A part of his humanity that adds to his disgust.
In Vergils last battle with Dante, he was ready to lose. He knew he would lose to dante and accepted it. Thats why he was so calm and phylosophical, even friendly to Dante. His expirience as V helped with it. He was prepared to die in that fight. Thats why he was much softer in the end of DMC5. He actualy, finaly, accepted his humanity, just as Dante accepted his demonic part. This can lead to incredibly interesting character development in future games, if they be released a bit sooner than in 12 fucking years, lol.
Tbh if nero wouldnt have intervened , im pretty sure we would have seen one more "heal your wounds, get strong" Scene, Dante is waaay bellow vergil in skills
I do agree but in a slightly different way. I think considering the little conversation he had with himself on top of the tree, basically being like "Why am I such a dick? Would I be this way if I had lived Dante's life?" I think he knew that he couldn't and wouldn't stop himself from trying to do it again and he said "let's finish this, Dante." and he kept talking about all things coming to end while he was fighting with Dante because he knew that the only person capable of stopping him was Dante - until he found out about Nero being his son. Even in the fight with Nero you can tell he was taking it easy on him. His character isn't as focused and his attacks aren't as methodical. You can tell he is "distracted" and even his response when Nero asks if he accepts him as his son, his response is weird. "Your existence or your strength", you can tell that the fight has gone from life and death, to testing his son's skills, to see if he is capable of stepping up to the plate of being the one to protect humanity from enemies that are as powerful as himself (currently the demon king as far as power goes.)
laz kar Nero was smart enough to stop the two idiots from killing each other by forcing their brain cells to work by beating the shit out of the both of them. Mad respect for Nero tbh
PapaLevan I feel like Dante was exaggerating lmao. Sure, he was in a weakened state due to fighting “Urizen” three times and a fully refreshed Vergil but he’s been through too much punishment for me to believe that a slap from Nero would’ve been the thing that killed him lmao
It's funny cause despite Vergil thinking his emotions lead to his weakness, I think some of his strongest moments in the games he is when he shows some semblance of compassion. A perfect moment is in DMC 3 when he and Dante are in the demon collapsing demon realm. As Dante moves to grab Vergil from falling, Vergil cuts Dante's hand stopping him and possibly saving Dante from the fate Vergil faced as nelo angelo.
To Conquer vs Protect. I can see that theme running with Sparda actually. He was a part of Mundus's plans to conquer. But he rebelled and chose to protect humans. Sparda lived out both of those themes and then his sons just chose one side. That would make a cool discussion :o you should totally do it
@@ChampionAnalysis I kinda mean you could use it for a video😅, because they are constenly on opposite sides Dante using his poewer to protect, while his brother strives for power no matter who he has to step on
@@ChampionAnalysis I really like to compare Dante and Vergil as the Warrior and Conqueror because initially, it was their purpose, their destiny according to Sparda ❤️
You even notice in Mission 20 of DMC when Nero calls Vergil out beginning of the fight for not being a father to him. Vergil briefly displays some bit of sympathy/empathy in his voice when he says, “Nero”. I’m guessing it made Vergil second guess of what has happened now that he has a child involved in his life now
12:57 "Facing Dante is more than overcoming an opponent, It's a battle of ideologies" A battle in which the winner will benefit from the loss of the opponent. A battle in which will make you question the entirety of what you thought life is. To put into perspective, This is the battle of Two Worlds. Which I find really cool and I'm getting my mind blown right now.
“Foolishness, Dante. Foolishness... Might controls EVERYTHING. And without strength, you cannot protect ANYTHING. Let alone yourself...! “ Vergil- DMC3 And basically every smug and arrogant or the “Ow the Edge” Shonen Rival(s) in Anime, EVER....!
@@lucaswibisono1316 So my point still stands then. Naruto and Bleach are literally the ONLY anime I can think of in that decade that followed the same line.
Bet that Sparda had to have the Time Stone to predict the best outcome for his Kids, that would explained why he knew from the very beginning who to give Rebellion and Yamato.
Or maybe he just had plenty of knowledge (He had at least 2000 years old, is obvious that he was going to learn something in that time ) And then, after observe and analyse his children and their respective personalities (even if their were Young), he decided which sword would complement them. That is to say, that he predicted a future result based on real time information. Like a pro. Responder
I respectfully disagree. That kind of thing would have avoided the day his wife died and family broke apart had he held such an item. I think it was more his intuition. He knows his sons, but how could he have predicted things went so wrong after his passing?
I disagree. I think it's more based on their personality and at the same time, it doesn't matter at all which sword gets which. For my first point, Dante was more outgoing, and is closer to his mother Eva which in Sparda's eyes, the definition of Humanity's compassion. Maybe Sparda thought that Dante would inherit more of his mother's personality and humanity. But I dont think it matters much since whoever gets which sword can stop the other person since both swords are the opposite of one another. Rebellion can unify while Yamato severe
Not really. Both swords seems to be his backup plan for himself long before Vergil and Dante. Technically, he didn't really gave Yamato to Vergil. Vergil took Yamato because he wanted to become like his father. So Dante got the other one. It's nothing but a coincidence.
A job well done indeed. However, if I may add a piece of mind regarding Vergil, I strongly believe he loved Dante in a weird way. He does not only view him as an obstacle, but also part of what he wants to protect. The day of the trauma he experienced the helplessness of feeling he lost everything due to his lack of power and he seeks to feel in complete control so as to never again having to suffer that kind of pain that comes form the loss of loved ones. Also, although he made questionable things, he doesn't hate humanity either I believe because he had a son with a human and he had the chance to kill Lady in dmc 3 at the library, which he could have done easily, yet he just ignored her even though he clearly knew she was there and she had kinda fucked up his plan in that moment of the plot to some extent. On top of that, the day of the trauma he felt abandoned by his mom whom he clearly cared a lot. Overall I've always perceived him as someone who just wants to feel in complete control of his life to be able to protect what and who he feels dear to him. He's really relatable to me regarding the control aspect because I struggled with depression or maybe I was close to depression in the past due to things that had not been turning out the way I expected in life after putting effort into them, which led me to feel powerless and to feel I needed to find a way to control my life when in reality what I needed to do was come to terms with the lack of control one has in life regarding those things and try to better myself to overcome the helplessness.
I agree! Vergil, although callous on the outside, is not exactly a villain like some antagonists for other series. He has sympathetic, _human_ motives, no matter how much he may try to deny that. He is misguided and lost, not evil, and if he didn't have powers or access to relics as world-changing as e.g., the Temen-ni-gru, his mistakes would not have resulted in as much destruction of life as they did. I feel so bad for him, dude 😞 I hope he regains his legacy. Also, kudos to you for introspecting and realising that some parts of life are beyond our control, and that we must make the best of what we can control to improve ourselves. Self-reflection is hard and I appreciate your insight. :>
one interesting piece of evidence that could make virgil's psychology more interesting is when Nero unlocked his devil trigger with Yamato, is talks in a state of trance speaking to himself in what first sounds like it's about him, but carries shades of virgils motives. "From that day forth... my arm changed... and a voiced echoed... power... give me more power! And if I become a demon, so be it, I will endure the exile.... Anything to protect her." The voice echoeing is clearly a memory of Vergil, since Yamato is just a shortcut to Nero's imperfect devil trigger. What Vergil says can easily be related to the loss of his mother, but we also need to remember that Nero is his son which means Vergil had the ability to love another human once too. This might be a hint that his aspirations for power also linked someone else he loved, but possibly also lost. Towards the end of DMC5 Vergil laughs when he finds out Nero is his son, and simply says That was a long time ago. This might show that he possibly tried to be a good guy once, but that might have ended tragically.
That "long time ago" line struck me as a little off too. It could very well be like you said that Vergil did have some sort of affection in the past for someone. I always attributed his decision to have Nero as more of a practical one (to ensure Sparda's legacy contonues) from understanding who Vergil is after what we've seen. But that's just speculation of course. So one can equally speculate that vergil was capable of loving someone. I do want to talk about that line Nero says in my Nero video :D I didnt consider it stemming from Vergil, but it definitely sounds plausible to me.
Having a child wouldn't make someone a good guy. However, it seems that Vergil tried his hand at starting a family (whether intentionally or unintentionally), and it never stuck.
Fantastic work! I have a background both on psychology and librarianship and I'm super impressed by the quality of your analysis. Bringing Adler and bibliotherapy to the discussion was absolutely on point. This is the kind of content I'm always excited to watch. Such a good video, man.
You forgot something that is a core to Vergil's persona, the book, according to the lore, the book is Vergil's heart, that's why he gives it to nero, he gives his son his most precious object
Videos like this makes you appreciate the story of Devil May Cry, most just think it's just a no nonsense hack and slash game with OP characters, but in reality they all have a ton of heart, soul and humanity in their story.
"Literature often serves as an emotional outlet" - or, alternatively, and just hear me out here, it turns out that deep down and beneath the literally compulsive obsession with power that the day his family was attacked by demons instilled in him, Vergil's just genuinely into poetry and books and probably shakespeare, probably in no small part because that matches up with everything else about him as a foil to his brother. Dante kind of seems like he probably never actually went to school, while Vergil seems like it's possible he actually has a degree in something, presumably from some place that had a professor digging into some nearby ruins that, once understood and unlocked, revealed a gate to hell or some other ancient artifact, which he disappeared immediately after finding.
V gave us so much backstory about Vergil as a person and not just a badass and considering he has been my favorite since his inclusion, this game was a love letter for me. This video itself also was good for me as I also love both martial arts yet am big into poetry so I relate to Vergil in a small few ways.
I can tell you that in my case, I subbed after your Dante video because it was the only one that pointed out how down to earth and relateable Dante is. Most other videos don't talk about how good his humanity is, especially for a character written for an action game (moreso with Itsuno than Kamiya.)
Even then, Kamiya's version of Dante is very subtle of showing things. Just like in the last video where he mentions how Dante leaves Sparda aside Trish's dead body. Or maybe its just how we dont care at that time. But still... both are great.
@@lucaswibisono1316 I agree it was there as well with Kamiya as well. Really should have worded it better, but I just feel Itsuno had the story to show off Dante's human side more. DMC1 feels focused more on Dante embracing his father's legacy, but there are moments where Kamiya made Dante's humanity shine (the Trish scene you mentioned as well as Dante telling Griffin to not fight with his wound, then getting pissed at Mundas for killing his own.) I think it's also kind of unfair in hindsight due to the fact Itsuno had 4 games (but DMC2 was kind of screwed up when he got there) and Kamiya had one, I just meant Itsuno's stories are better at portraying it and showing it develop. Just my dumb opinion, though.
The way i see it, Kamiya (or DMC1 in general) is like the stepping stone of showcasing Dante's humanity. Itsuno is adjusting, and even perfecting it as time goes on.
Great video. You covered all the things I feel about Vergil so well. Including how I see him as a tragic villain. With him only being the way he is due to the fact he never wants to be hurt again. When you mentioned that he's gaining power so he never could feel helpless again. I was smiling that someone shared that same idea of his character. This is why I love Vergil so much as a character and why he's my favorite between him and Dante. Great video dude.
@@dylanpalton3331 Not sure what you mean. It's a painful truth, I know, but Capcom typically follows this trope in their popular IPs; Megaman/Zero, Ryu/Ken. DMC is very Japanese, so it applies indeed.
I feel like at the end of DMC 5 Vergil starts to come around to the idea of being more human. His interaction with Nero and his storybook, his more friendly duels with Dante in the underworld, competing against him for kills and to an extent acknowledging jackpot. I'm not sure if the van scenes in the menus are canon but it's nice to see Vergil hanging out with his brother and son in Nico's van
Awesome video. Love the way you used psychology and literature to explain the reasons behind Vergil's obsession with power and why V is the character he was in the way of his expressions and emotions and personallity !
I will forever love DMC5 for fixing Vergil. Before now, he was pretty one-dimensional, but we finally see him reflecting on what he's done in the game. He's betrayed his own humanity, sacrificed thousands maybe millions just for power, and for what? By the end, it was simply to be better than Dante. He felt inferior to his own brother, but Dante showed real growth and grew in greater ways. Vergil finally understands this, and at the end, wants to fight Dante just to either finally win or to die trying. It's only until Nero enlightens him to how things aren't just about power, that both Nero and Dante DO still care for him. After all he's done, they still cared because he was family, and what had he done? He had tried to kill Dante simply to get the power to... Protect his family... Dante. At the time, his only known relative. And yet had already betrayed him. That these people, these HUMANS, were both stronger AND proudly part human, he couldn't compare. He knew he had been wrong all along and finally, FINALLY, sees the picture. His humanity was never weakness. He was wrong.
Actually, I’m so glad TH-cam brought me here. I also think it’s because we all really admire and love Vergil as a character, so your analysis really hits home. It gives even more depth to Vergil!
Loved this! Can't wait for Nero's part you really break down these characters in ways I didn't think about them, especially Vergil and his emotions conveyed through V
I also think, that his reason behind his obssesion for power changed after being Nelo Angelo, before that, his reason was to not feel the weakness and despair like when he was Young, again (as you explained), but after being corrupted by Mundus, i think he could have held on to three things, so as not to lose the little that he was left of himself, The amulet, his pursuit of power and Dante (Because Dante was the last and more fresh memory he had before losing against Mundus). The amulet dissapeared after dmc1, so the only two left, were the power and Dante. But his body and mind was so damaged (We have to remember that he was turned into a puppet-demon for over a decade) that i don't think he could really remember the original reason of this two. The only thing he could remember is that he needed power and that he needed to defeat Dante, because this are the only two things left that keep him being himself. This two are like a mantra that he repeat over an over again to remember who is he. So when he divided himself into Urizen and V. Urizen is driven by the corrupted reason meanwhile V, is being driven for the original reason (Don't feel again thoses awful emotions). And then finally, when Urizen and V get merge together, Vergil returns to the original reason. (and maybe, he gets a new and better one)
Vergil watched Eva get torn into pieces. i think thats part of his trauma too. Im so glad you explained everything, so people who say DMC has no storyline can understand. This goes deep af
@@langleysenterprise5134 Not too sure myself. My friend told me about it. I asked her to tell me a bit about the books she got. Have to ask her again. But in the books they really go in depth with the characters. The games are just the surface. She got code 1 and 2. They are on Amazon aswell. Code 2 was vergil. Just looked it up In that 1 cutscene where he mentions "if our positions were switched.." Take it literally. Eva did hide Dante. She came for vergil but didn't make it. And he witnessed it. Felt guilty cuz he saw that but couldn't do anything. Capcom should put more story into the dmc games for sure
A 14 minute video for Champion Analysis to ask Vergil "Where's your motivation?" as revenge for all the hours he probably spent fighting him as a kid...
I'd definitely recommend digging into a Lady video. The Dante and Vergil introspectives are amazing and surprisingly high quality. Now we need one of our favorite gunslinger. Keep up that good work man
OOOOOOH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THISSSSSS Very very well made piece, not only informing on the character of Vergil but full of inquiries into general psychology. Congrats on 2k, can't wait for Nero! (You better do Lady too bruh)
So Vergil’s only favorite thing is literature? So that explains the library scene in DMC3 where he first met Arkham. (Only If you played Vergil’s campaign in DMC3:SE)
Remember kids, accepting yourself gives you massive amounts of power. And possibly PTSD. Something that Nero ironically ended up doing better than his dad or uncle, since he ESSENTIALLY managed it by the end of 4 while it took the other two I think about 30 years if we consider DMC 3 as the start of the timer.
The fact that Vergil actually asked himself that, while on top of the world (metaphorically and quite literally) must be one of the deepest bits of Vergil's cutscenes. I'd love to see one last DMC when Mundus is finally killed (since we had no update since DMC1). But if the franchise is done, then I must say that DMC5 is a quite satisfactory way to end it.
I'll just leave this here. Demons possess power, humans bear weakness A craving insatiable as an abyss; in endless vast steepness Numb and separate, feelings grow cold as I And I've yet to shed a tear, because Devils Never Cry
I hope you cover lady after nero Or death from dark siders 2 Not to mention he thought his mother then only being thay cared for him hates him doesn't want him choose dante over him
I never played Dark Siders :o but as for Vergil's mother, yeah that would further add onto his feelings of inferiority. Vergil probably questions why his brother was chosen over him which he can then take as a sign of him being inferior. Although its irrational, its most likely what he feels cause of that trauma.
what ? i didnt get this at all from the original DMC Vergil i thought he wanted power cuz he blamed himself for being a weak human hybrid for their mothers death and that he wasnt strong like his dad who protected humanity from the demons
@@cheekyfantasy1314 right that's the reasoning that we got from him. But often times we aren't aware of deep rooted feelings we have. So what we're talking about is that vergil may have these feelings from his trauma despite not being fully aware of them. And I figure dante eventually got an idea of that since he tried to tell Urizen that Eva searched for him to that day. This is speculation of course but it goes with the analysis
@@ChampionAnalysis funny thing is Dante lost twice as much as Vergil, Dante lost his mother and his brother that day, I guess that is why is happy to go to hell with him his big bro in the end
Something I noticed and made me realise of his growth is that he doesn't bite Dante off when he says he'll keep and eye on Vergil. I mean, in dmc3 Vergil literally slashes Dante away (whether it was to protect him or not) here... Vergil seems not only okay with it, but even glad for it.
That day....had our youtube channels were switched.....would our fates be different? ........will I have your subs......and you mine?? Let's settle this........ Champion Analysis
Vergil's hatred for his humanity is really funny considering the thing that makes dante and vergil more powerful is most likely the fact that they are half human
Didn't V say that he ( meaning Vergil) was outside in the playground, by the little green rocking-horse, when all hell broke loose at the family home? If I have remembered that correctly, then sadly, there is no way Eva could have protected him too. He was doomed to suffer alone. I love Vergil. I'll always be #TeamBlue 💙 I don't believe he is evil. Not then, not now. He is just lost, misguided and alone. He needs to heal is wounds and so does Dante. They need to be together. They need each other. One coin...two sides. Ice with Fire. A balance needs to be struck. I hope this will happen in the next game. Thankyou for this video. I enjoyed it.
V did say that. It makes it all the more tragic. People aren't all evil or all good. I agree that Vergil is a very misguided person trying to cope with his trauma which led him to make really terrible and drastic decisions. Anybody can relate to that.
It takes some Sick Skills to make not only Dante's video but also this one. It's good to hear that you are MOTIVATED to make the Nero vid. I look forward to it.
1:43 technically when this happened vergil could've very well thought that nero was some random person who happened to have absorbed the yamato in his arm
In SMT: Nocturne, a Soul spoke about the differences between Demons and Humans, outlining that while Demons are far stronger than Human Souls, their death is permanent while Human Souls can reincarnate. The concept artist who did work for the Devil Triggers in DMC3 is the same artist who worked on characters and creatures in Nocturne. I forgot his name.
Thank you :D I wrote a looooot of term papers during my time in college. So I guess those long nights were worth it since I pretty much write an essay as a script each time
As a person who has his own inferiority complex problems, I can honestly say you hit it right on the nose with this video. Although I am not a hybrid between demon and human, it is very satisfying for someone to finally recognize problems that people deal with when having an inferiority complex.
I'd like to call attention to the first cutscene of DMC3 SE where Vergil was searching for a book in a library. DMC5 and Visions of V recontextualizes that scene a lot imo.
Demon, Angle, God, Alien, Mortal, Human are all Human deep inside. We all LOVE and HATE, BUILD and DESTROY, GIVE and TAKE, we all have PROPS and CONS, GOOD and EVIL, we are all imperfect, and that's perfect, but we most always try to aim for good on least we are lead astray, IMPERFECTION is PERFECTION.
So this is why Vergil thanks Nero before he leaves to go to the top of the Qliphoth. Nero showed Vergil to not completely hate his human side, but that it has its strengths. Kinda like how Lady showed Dante that in DMC3. Hence why at the end cutscene for DMC5, Vergil actually laughs with Dante and has fun with his brother fighting in the underworld. Finally smiles, enjoys company with his brother, and accepts the power he already has. Never really occurred to me that Nero was right beside his father basically the entire game. He talked with V over and over.
Dude, I did not expect this much... no, I did expect some knowing the novels but your way of analyzing Vergil to even quote Adler's work (One of my class subjects) is one happy surprise. It is truly Fascinating!
Thank you :D Things become so much more fascinating and relatable when you try to apply psych to it yo. If you're studying Adler then maybe you'd like my video on Persona where I apply Jungian psych :D
Great content devil may cry holds a special place in my heart I relate a lot to the brothers I grew up playing the game it’s good to see a channel doing justice to the series
Your content is full of quality. Thank you for dedicating your attention to such a beloved character of mine. Looking forward for what you have in store.
This is a pretty great video! Something I’d just like to add on is that Vergil comes across as being an insanely jealous character. The reason he runs off on the day of the house fire is because he gets frustrated that Eva is “taking Dante’s side” as he perceives it when mediating an argument. Since childhood he’d always been jealous of Dante, and seeing him alive and well later in life is like the final nail in the coffin for him, since he assumes Eva saved him on that day. He also is very “territorial” with his belongings, best exhibited by him scribbling his name on all of his belongings to solidify his ownership, and tearing off Nero’s entire arm just to grab the Yamato. This behavior probably stems from a few things, one being jealous for all the things his brother has and wanting more for himself, and also from his time as a puppet for Mundus, seeing as he was stripped of all his agency and belongings for a good 20+ years. Despite being so jealous of Dante, though, he doesn’t quite hate him. He still plays along with his banter, and smiles when fighting alongside him during the Arkham fight. Throughout the whole series, he doesn’t truly want to kill Dante, even saying in VOV that he loved fighting with him. However, he doesn’t know how to reconcile familial love and good old fashion eldest sibling jealousy, probably because he never got the chance to age out of it since his life got turned upside down age 8. Thus, instead of trying to communicate with him when finding him alive, he goes straight to trying to kill him, because that’s the only way he knows how to interact with his brother. In all, Vergil is a really well written character with a lot of facets and personality to him. I hope he gets his own spin-off game someday…
Facing off against his son was probably a HUGE turning point for Vergil. Nero has gone through exactly what Vergil did. He lost someone he loved because he felt he wasn't strong enough to protect them. And look how much stronger Nero is as a result of him trying to protect others. It's a classic case of a son being wiser than his father. Instead of running away from those emotions, Nero confronts them and acts. Nero taught Vergil a lesson that day. A big one. And now he's a new person.
There are incredible similarities between Nero and Vergil that I plan to cover in his own video next :D in my opinion Nero has a mix of both brothers' ideologies
Never have i ever thought i would sit and listen carefuly through an entire video of this kind. That was entertaining, to say the least. What a great way to combine visuals/music/voiceover. Great Job man!
I don’t think anyone caught this but Vergil fears being alone and his SDT reflects that.. just as Dante’s SDT brings down judgment upon the demons who’ve wronged... Vergil’s SDT literally has a DOPPELGÄNGER coincidence? I think not...
That's a pretty interesting take on their forms. Honestly Vergil could use some quality time with people that believe he's worth it. I bet deep down he's a little happy he's got Dante with him in the demon world now instead of being alone
Champion Analysis yup! Honestly they both needed Dmc 5 just as much as the devs at capcom did as well as us fans.. the long years of built up locked depression doors can slowly start to open as we begin anew

Glad you bring Visions of V (and the other source outside the games that i never got the chance to read/look) when talking about Vergil. That manga is so good for the backstory of Vergil (and V included) that the game seems dont have time to show it.
I think the final fight was just Dante and Vergil playing arround with Nero. I think that the real Vergil, real incarnation of himself was V. How he seeked help from Dante without Dante having any hatred towards him anymore and being happy he's alive and not dead. And what he saw in Nero when he was with him. Actual dedication to gain more power even if he is brittle as glass and coming to dante who can delete him in 1 swipe, only to reimerge as himself again and help Dante and Nero slay some demon ass
Thanks for creating this essay on Vergil. I honestly have a love-hate relationship with this guy, but I used to have a crush on him before my feelings subconsiously moved towards Dante in DMC3. I have thought about writing a DMC fanfic or as I would have called it my unofficial DMC novel. I was thinking about giving both Dante and Vergil love interests, one of them being an alter ego of mine (for Dante). For Vergil, it would have been either a woman (human or angel or demon) or a guy (same). I haven't been able to concentrate on what I wanted to do, but thanks to my younger sister telling me that "everything is temporary" as well as explaining it upon my request. So if I decide to go ahead with the Devil May Cry fanfic, it'll be published on Medium or Wattpad.

How they gain more power
Vergill: He lost everything he lost even his humanity
Dante: Stab himself with broken sword
Nero: DEAD WEIGHT
aCtUAlLy Guuuh guh. Dante gained power by fusing/absorbing their father's sword, the ugly ass, Sword Sparda, when he stabbed himself with the broken Rebellion. ( i cant take a joke, i know i know :P )

Vergil: *becomes the most powerful demon in history*

Nero: *gets a new DT out of nowhere*
Vergil: "am I a joke to you?"

Dark Hero06 I'm pretty sure Yamato was Vergil's sword first
@@darkhero0685 he did not stole..he just taking back what belong to him
Lack of vergil's emotional development is what holds him back, hopefully we gonna see him "fixed" in DMC6
something to add - when Vergil was attacked as a child, it was his devil trigger which saved him, which I don't think its had to argue that that solidified a notion of "the demon keeps me safe" as a sort of emotional shield or crutch., as it wasn't other people or Dante or his mother which saved him, it was himself and only a part himself which allowed him to survive.
Vergil's mother died because he wasn't strong, he was a liability that caused his own traumatic childhood, in his mind, so:
If you are strong, you can protect yourself, and not cause others to suffer on your behalf.

Vergil doesn't want to lose to Dante. so when he saw Dante looking old and have a beard, Vergil thought "this... this is my chance to best him", and immediately use Yamato to shave so he can look younger than Dante
😂😂😂😂 what a storyline...

You're absolutely right.
Nero perfectly combines the two brother's motivation:

"... he was willing to even tear his own son's arm off for power."
To be fair, Vergil didn't know Nero was his son. Doubt it would have stopped him in that moment but it kind of takes off the edge of this action.
I think Vergil would still have gotten Yamato but not cut his son's arm off
Vergil would have asked Nero to help him get stronger without splitting up into V and Urizen
Vergil opens a portal to hell and he and his son would find a way for the father to become stronger
... and in the words of Dante, “Oh, brother... you cut your own son’s arm off for more power... and you still lost (to Nero)...”
I say it was a cool fight though.

Vergil didn't know he was his son back then
Had he known back in DMC 3 things would be different
At first I thought you said grill so I was like "oh hell yeah, grill night with the family"
Well I mean if you played the other games as well it’ll make way more sense too. Especially DMC3
A lot of his therapy came from creating those creatures... hence his most formidable one “Nightmare”
They even say that after you kill them as Dante at the end.... “We’re merely Vergil’s DISCARDED thoughts”
That was very well thought!! Impressive.
DON'T SAY IT!
*JACKPOT*
Nice well thought of the process. I do agree with that. Vergil doesn’t completely hate him by the end of DMC5. It is really interesting.
Awesome comment. I think Vergil turned his back on the painting because he was ashamed of what he was about to do.

Naw, Dante and Vergil together would have slapped mundus
Dante and Vergil are also seeking fulfillment for what their purposes are. Whether to conquer or Protect. (Video idea)
To Conquer vs Protect. I can see that theme running with Sparda actually. He was a part of Mundus's plans to conquer. But he rebelled and chose to protect humans. Vergil briefly displays some bit of sympathy/empathy in his voice when he says, “Nero”. I’m guessing it made Vergil second guess of what has happened now that he has a child involved in his life now
12:57 "Facing Dante is more than overcoming an opponent, It's a battle of ideologies"
A battle in which the winner will benefit from the loss of the opponent. A battle in which will make you question the entirety of what you thought life is. To put into perspective, This is the battle of Two Worlds. Which I find really cool and I'm getting my mind blown right now.

Like a pro.

@@fannynearfyi789 i think you mean :Like a Badass"
I relate
I'm pretty sure helping in mass murder makes him a villain ayyy.

one interesting piece of evidence that could make virgil's psychology more interesting is when Nero unlocked his devil trigger with Yamato, is talks in a state of trance speaking to himself in what first sounds like it's about him, but carries shades of virgils motives.
"From that day forth... my arm changed... and a voiced echoed... power... give me more power! And if I become a demon, so be it, I will endure the exile.... Anything to protect her."
The voice echoeing is clearly a memory of Vergil, since Yamato is just a shortcut to Nero's imperfect devil trigger.
@@ChampionAnalysis It was definitely always stemming from Vergil. The spirit itself resembles some parts of Vergil's DT.
Fantastic work! I have a background both on psychology and librarianship and I'm super impressed by the quality of your analysis. Bringing Adler and bibliotherapy to the discussion was absolutely on point. This is the kind of content I'm always excited to watch. Such a good video, man.
Thank you :D Trying to put my college experience to some use out here on youtube lol Feel free to check out my other psych heavy videos
I am, I love your channel!
So in retrospect, Vergil needs a hug
It's a coping mechanism that turned into a flat out psychological addiction, not that he'll ever admit it.
Exactly!
He kind of did as V though.
@@DarkMirria1 true!
That's a pretty shonen trope you find with a lot of rival/hero's brother, though...A bit emo lol
@@blumiu2426 don t be that guy. No one likes that guy.
MAN!! Gotta love how V points his cane the same way Vergil does with the Yamato. It's subtle, but it is there. 3:40
Not to mention he was killed and enslaved by mundus till he came back
Awesome video.
He was wrong.
yeah V really made vergil, dont get what people saw in him until 5
@@aagh8714 He was cool. That's about it.
Thought urizen doesn't remember mundus since its all on the Nightmares V has
@@wiggleduck2814 Maybe that intention was so embedded in his subconscious that he doesn't even needed a "reason" to justify it, anymore.

This video would be better if everytime you said power, had Vergil saying in its place.
So Vergil’s only favorite thing is literature? So that explains the library scene in DMC3 where he first met Arkham.
(Only If you played Vergil’s campaign in DMC3:SE)
Literature, classical music, theatre, MORE POWER

Or death from dark siders 2
Not to mention he thought his mother then only being thay cared for him hates him doesn't want him choose dante over him
I never played Dark Siders :o but as for Vergil's mother, yeah that would further add onto his feelings of inferiority. Vergil probably questions why his brother was chosen over him which he can then take as a sign of him being inferior. Although its irrational, its most likely what he feels cause of that trauma.
what ?
i didnt get this at all from the original DMC Vergil
i thought he wanted power cuz he blamed himself for being a weak human hybrid for their mothers death and that he wasnt strong like his dad who protected humanity from the demons
@@ChampionAnalysis funny thing is Dante lost twice as much as Vergil,

Something I noticed and made me realise of his growth is that he doesn't bite Dante off when he says he'll keep and eye on Vergil. I mean, in dmc3 Vergil literally slashes Dante away (whether it was to protect him or not) here... Vergil seems not only okay with it, but even glad for it.
I think it's rather simple. He just didn't accept himself as he was. You can't be the best version if you if you don't accept yourself

That's right and makes perfect sense.
My head just got yeeted out the window
Bro what?
So this is why Vergil thanks Nero before he leaves to go to the top of the Qliphoth. Nero showed Vergil to not completely hate his human side, but that it has its strengths. Kinda like how Lady showed Dante that in DMC3. Hence why at the end cutscene for DMC5, Vergil actually laughs with Dante and has fun with his brother fighting in the underworld. Finally smiles, enjoys company with his brother, and accepts the power he already has. Never really occurred to me that Nero was right beside his father basically the entire game. He talked with V over and over.

@@ChampionAnalysis Exactly. I think that's why he's my favourite character in DMC 5. He has a little of everything.

I don’t think anyone caught this but Vergil fears being alone and his SDT reflects that.. just as Dante’s SDT brings down judgment upon the demons who’ve wronged... Vergil’s SDT literally has a DOPPELGÄNGER coincidence? I think not...
