I was starting to think you'd end up in a megadungeon situation, your Lair die never goes down, haha. When I play my dungeons turn out tiny. You do have to add the +10 to whomever initiates the attack, be it you or the monsters. In your fight against the Vorleg, they rolled a 77, which is a double above their skill score, which means it's a fumble. You did calculate the armor deduction correctly, though! You also forgot to apply the Venomous Trait when you received damage, even though it was inconsequential at this stage. I hope my pointing out the mistakes isn't annoying, you're doing an amazing job and I'm having a blast watching the playthrough!
Your comments are not annoying at all! Us youtube folk are a vain crowd - you always throw in a compliment and that keeps me happy ;) Good spots here - yup, totally forgot venomous - need to be better at remembering those enemy traits. And I totally forgot fumbles existed! Need to watch out for those!
Hey Alex! just starting to play, first solo rpg that i bought. I encountered a pack (3) of rats. I have trouble managing the combat and conditions. I understood that I need to track each rat as an individual. 1) So, I will be "hitting" one rat, after my turn, each rat tries to hit me. So 3 possible hits? 2) If for example I get a defensive move and get Bleeding on my opponent, that would be assigned to 1 rat only right? 2)If I get something like D8 (-20 to defensive roll on my opponent), do i assign to the next rat I will be fighting? or wait a round and assign that -20 to the same rat? thx!
@@mauro525252 yes, when it comes to enemy groups, you need to track each one of them individually. 1) So yes, in your case you would be attacked once per each rat. Conditions and modifiers are assigned on an individual basis, correct. 2) Yes, you would assign that to the next rat you'd be fighting against.
Thank you for the palyer aids! Just a remark on the initiative roll part: from what I read, it seems that the +20 applies only if you're trying to take someone by surprise, which means testing stealth rather than perception (p66).
@@lone_adventurerThanks! I was a little surprised that there were no consequences for failed surprise tests: after checking, it would seem that we have a -10 on the perception test.
It always confuses me to see you want to roll under your target number (low) but the higher number wins out of the lower rolls. Must be "Price is Right" rules and the person closest without going over wins, 😅
Great stuff! Been sharing your videos on the Blackoath Discord for others to follow along.. on my second character (well, second official - third as my first was prior to full release).. About to face off against Gorehoof in the starter domain (+2 dmg overseer influence, ugh, not as bad as Vital, but still brutal).
Sell your lamp, buy an attunement crystal, camp to use the attunement crystal and identify the item, go back to the trader, sell the item for a massive profit and buy the lamp back. And some lamp oil (you can't use the lamp without oil...)
I just received this game and am working through the entry domain. I'm having difficulty understanding some concepts about damage: What is the difference between the 2-handed weapon bonus (increases damage dealt by 1), and the bonus for opting to 2-hand a versatile weapon (this weapon deals +1 damage)? What of the defensive move #5 (opponent immediately suffers d4 damage); if I roll that damage on the 'Damage Dealt' table, all results inflict 1 damage, save rolling a 1, which is 0, which just feels silly and an arbitrary die roll. I just wish the book used different terminology for the damage roll and damage inflicted (like, I don't know, Wounds, perhaps).
Ker Nethalas is a pretty tricky game, so I'd recommend a couple of things: 1. Go easy on yourself and feel free to make decisions yourself (I'm tempted to say that both the damage examples mean the same thing, but are worded differently. 2. Get yourself into the Blackoath Games Facebook group or Discord channel. There are a lot of people who will happily answer your questions, including the designer Alex. Best of luck!
@lone_adventurer It feels like an imbalance in weapon types then. All 2H weapons have 0 (or negative speed) compared to their versatile counterparts (5), which also enable the option to parry. In addition, 2H weapons disable light sources without the use of a spell or belt attachment, so they are not even an option for the majority of new PCs. They roll the same damage die as all else, which does not feel enough to offset the downsides imo (at the very least, roll a d8, or d6+d4). There is very little reason to use any 2H weapon when the bastard sword exists. In addition, shafted weapons should at least grant +5 to initiative, given their extended reach. Alas, I feel my tone is extremely negative, which is not the case. I'm very much enjoying my trip through the first domain (save the Overseer's influence, which causes all enemies to 'explode' on death, nearly killing my character in the first encounter 😱), it's simply for all the well-designed nuances and mechanics present in the rest of the game, the weapons appear *too* homogenised and improperly balanced.
I think you can roll on the rarity table when you find a magic item to determine how many properties it has. You just need the attunement crystals to figure out those properties. So you could have sold that harpoon to the trader. Also when you received that +1D10 damage roll I don't think you count them separately from the damage die. So if you rolled a 5 on the D6 and 3 on the D10 it would an 8 that you would compare on the damage chart. The same with critical hits. You add the two dice together for a final value. So you roll a 2 and a 3 you would compare 5 to the damage chart no 2 and 3.
Re. Magic rarity - good to know, thanks! On damage, I'm pretty sure you don't add the results of the dice, you compare each individual roll to the table - I was doing it the way you suggest initially and the designer of the game corrected me 🙂
@@lone_adventurer then I stand corrected too. But I think it makes more sense they way you and I were doing it to begin with. So when are you doing episode 5? BTW I purchased the monster deck on Drive Thru RPG after I watched your videos. Just having those should speed up play without constantly flipping through the book. That's my biggest gripe is the organization of the book. Cheer and Happy Easter!
@@deanm375 yeah definitely some organisational issues here and there - that said, Alex is a one-man outfit, and given the complexity of his games, I think he does better than I ever could 🙂 Film episode 5 today!
Enjoying the look at Ker Nethalas. Am kind of curious about what happens if you run out of rooms before reaching the lair. Do you just ignore one of the dead end rolls, or are there actual rules governing that?
I can't remember off the top of my head. If there isn't an explicit rule, you can just reroll as you say (I'm always pretty free an easy with rerolls for layout in games like this)!
Hi Lone Adventurer, at 17mins in (ish) did you need to check if the doors are trapped? btw ive just binge watched all the episodes of this. Ive ordered the game myself and your videos are fun and helpful. 👍🏻
Not sure about the door question without rewatching :) The designer has clarified that doors need to be checked for traps if they are locked. Hope you enjoy the game!
When You got the dead end room. I immediately wondered what you do if the next room you go into is also a deadend. What do you do? is it as simple as rerolling?
Yeah, I've got a feeling it says somewhere in the rulebook to re-roll until you get something else. I personally think that there's no harm in re-rolling until you just get something that fits with what you're after. If you want more onward routes, roll until you get them!
Playing this game from the pdf. My tension die has cycled 3 times... getting rough. No closer to the overseer at all. But survived half a dozen encounters i just keep failing scavenge. And all my encounters i roll on resource tab. I'm feeling like my survivor is going to not make to the overseer.
Yeah, Ker Nethalas - like many of Blackoath Entertainment's games - can be pretty unforgiving. There is always a chance that it will just chew your character up and spit them out, and there won't be much you can do about it!

Another fantastic video. I'm really enjoying this series on Ker Nethalas and it's keeping me on track with my own foray into the darkness.
Very much enjoyed this - looking forward to the next episode.
Shouldn't be too long...will get back on it at the weekend, I would imagine. Pesky job, preventing me from just playing solo games all the time :P

Anyone else think the Dungeon layout in the beginning looks like a fancy key?

Anybody else hear “phantom wails” and picture like a massive ghost aquarium? Just me? That’s fine.
I'm now 3 rooms in to my adventure. I have terrible combat rolls, but been really lucky on loot rolls.
Only discovered your channel recently and working through all your videos as I really enjoy your content!

Agree. One reason I treat all combat as simultaneous. You, or your foe, always get a "dying blow" (except when a critical is involved).
