    Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory Movie Description:
    A sweet boy from a poor family dreams of finding one of five golden tickets hidden inside chocolate bar wrappers which will admit him to the eccentric and reclusive Willy Wonka's magical factory. One after another, tickets are discovered by ghastly children - but will the lad find the last remaining one and have all his dreams come true?
    Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is a 1971 American musical fantasy film directed by Mel Stuart from a screenplay by Roald Dahl, based on his 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It stars Gene Wilder as candymaker Willy Wonka. The film tells the story of a poor child named Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) who, upon finding a Golden Ticket in a chocolate bar, wins the chance to visit Willy Wonka's chocolate factory along with four other children from around the world.
    Filming took place in Munich from August to November 1970. Dahl was credited with writing the film's screenplay; however, David Seltzer was brought in to do an uncredited rewrite. Against Dahl's wishes, changes were made to the story, and other decisions made by the director led Dahl to disown the film. The musical numbers were written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley while Walter Scharf arranged and conducted the orchestral score.
    Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory was released in the United States on June 30, 1971, by Paramount Pictures. With a budget of $3 million, the film received generally positive reviews from critics, but was not a big financial success, only earning $4 million by the end of its original run. It received a nomination for Best Original Score at the 44th Academy Awards and Wilder was nominated for Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical at the 29th Golden Globe Awards. The film also introduced the song "The Candy Man", which went on to be recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. and become a popular hit. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory has since become highly popular on repeated television airings and home video sales. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

    A fun fact: During the trippy tunnel scene, Gene forgot his lines and start singing random things, all the other actors though he was losing his mind so their faces and screams were genuine. In addition the yellow cup he bites into wasn’t actually edible it was pure wax.

      Weren't the lyrics there mostly the same as something in the book though? I remember it being noteworthy as the one scene in that movie that was most similar to the book while they took liberties everywhere else. (The Oompa Loompa songs in particular are just trash in that movie. It's fine once but quickly gets very VERY annoying.) Feeling too lazy right now to dig the book out of storage to confirm it though.
      And then the Tim Burton adaptation skipped the boat song but used lines from the book for all the kid mocking songs from the Oompa Loompas.
      EDIT: Maybe a quick search will help though... Aha. Look up "The Rowing Song by Roald Dahl". Same thing, word for word. Wilder was reciting Dahl's work there.

    I think Wonka was so upset at the end because he was disappointed. He went through so much in order to find these five kids and it resulted in all of them failing the test. He probably thinks that this whole thing wasn't worth his time and there probably isn't anyone worthy enough to take over when he's gone and this whole empire he built will just disappear.

      It's just a test for Charlie. That's why he shouts, and also why he apologizes. He wasn't anywhere near as upset as he let on. He just needed to make sure that even if he presented himself in a bad/threatening way, the good part of Charlie wouldn't faulter.

      Honestly I think he was just putting pressure on Charlie. Chuck needs to give up the everlasting gobstopper or eat it, making it useless to his imposter Slugworth out of active choice. A moment of giving into temptation isn't going to destroy the kid but he needs to keep his promise right there.

    Peter Ostrum who played Charlie Bucket, only acted for this movie and decided to become a veterinarian for his family's horses. In the novel, Willy Wonka was the candy shop man incognito to look for his successor, hence why Charlie found a pound sterling in the gutter and was handed the Wonka bar with the golden ticket after returning to get something for Grandpa Joe.

    Ernst Ziegler, who played Grandpa George, was a German World War I veteran. He survived being gassed and had gone almost 100% blind from the experience. Mel Stuart had to direct him with a bright red light hidden out of frame. He would stash his shoes under the bed when filming his scenes. When it came to Joe’s musical number, he vehemently protested them removing his shoes, worrying they’d get nicked. He valued those shoes highly because they were the only possession he had left from before World War II.
    The photograph of the fake fifth winner was actually an inside joke. The picture of Paraguayan gambler Alberto Minoleta, was actually a real photo of Nazi bigwig Martin Bormann, Hitler’s personal secretary. He disappeared after the war and was still at large when the film came out, he was believed to have fled to South America, like Adolph Eichmann and Josef Mengele before him. The year after release a skeleton was found outside Berlin that was identified as him. He had died trying to escape the siege.

    The old man with the knives is a tinker. Back in the day, tinkers were one of the professions that would go through the streets hawking their wares or services. The tinker would sharpen and repair knives, scissors, and other household implements, and all the things hanging from his cart were work he'd either taken on or finished already. He would pick up and deliver as he made his rounds through the town.

But when the Oompa Loompas start singing the song in the wide shot, her face is painted blue, in the close ups during the song, there’s still a blue light, so it was probably two different takes (definitely more, but two minimum unless they had multiple cameras)

    After last ticket is found, Grandpa Joe says, "Let him dream his dreams." Everything from there after could be Charlie's dream, as the film changes tone and everything is from his perspective basically (even how the camera stays with Charlie in the soda room).🤔

    No contest. This is by far the better version. The Tim Burton remake lacks all of the gentle humor, heart and charm that have made this a classic.

    • @phantomzone2725
      @phantomzone2725 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      I think it lacks because it was more focused to be faithful to the book, since Roald Dahl despised the 70s adaptation - and if you did read the book, you'll understand why - , and his family (or estate, whatever) was around the production to make the movie as much faithful as possible, and Burton was approved by Dahl's widow because she believed he understood her dad's style since he produced James and the Giant Peach

      @phantomzone2725 yeah, but a great book is not always a great movie

    • @NovusIgnis
      @NovusIgnis 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I disagree. I think the Tim Burton remake was just as good as this one, although it suffered in other areas. I wish it had been co-directed, with Tim Burton overseeing the vision and direction while another director oversaw the cinematography and technical aspects. That's where I think the movie lacked. The songs also could have used more work, although I love how diverse they were.

    • @cliffchristie5865
      @cliffchristie5865 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@NovusIgnis As I recall, when his film came out, Tim Burton made a point of criticizing the original film as inferior while praising his own. I doubt he would have participated in any film that wasn't 100% his vision. Darker, more expensive, more "faithful" to the source, do not necessarily make a better film. But it is a matter of opinion.

    Practical effects and real actors are what make so many movies like this so memorable and timeless. These day's it's all CGI backgrounds and even CGI faces and characters.
    In 2012 when they made Snowwhite and the Huntsman the makers of the movie Universal Pictures said the reason they hired Hollywood actors was "a casting decision, not a body-type decision," adding: "They came with pedigrees and recognisability." So basically they hired these Hollywood actors to play the role of the seven dwarfs simply too make money from notable actors appearing in the movie.
    The new Wonka movie did exactly the same thing just used CGI special effects so they could have a big name actor like Hugh Laurie star in the movie.
