As a Muslim from the Middle East, it is through the brilliantly crafted songs of R.E.M that I first became exposed to the greatness of Western culture. Hard to know, I have most of them, but haven't got them all yet, 80's era and their last album. Its a great album though, I also love Up and Out Of Time
R.E.M's songs appear to grow with me. While these songs meant various things to me when I was younger, they signify something new now that I'm 40. It's like a philosophy book that delves deeper and deeper.
This Song came out during a VERY TUMULTUOUS Time. Marital Breakdown, Family Deaths, etc. This song gave Me a sense of structure, strength. Michael Stipe has the Ability to project Strong Emotions with His Voice. REM has and does still evoke strong emotions within me. This Song and Everybody Cries, always give Me goosebumps. 👍🏼
Rediscovered REM just two weeks ago; Drive was the first song i listened to ... then, for the first time in eight years, was able to write poetry again.
I'm really happy, that you started write again! God bless you! This song is near to perfect. Nothing should be perfect, cause if it's perfect, the thing can't change anything, and this song always change me so happily!
A really haunting song and no one finds nuances to a note like Michael Stipe. The freedom of crowd surfing combined with lyrics telling us to be free is brilliant for this video. It is one of my favorites from REM.
It would be interesting to hear Stipe's thoughts on those lyrics. To me it seems to suggest the kids are not free, but are given the illusion of freedom. Especially in the line - "Maybe I'll ride, maybe you walk, maybe I drive to get off, baby." In other words those really driving the direction of the world get off on their power over others, while kids are encouraged to be rebellious and rock n roll and feel free as long as they don't get in the way of the drivers.
Said it once and will repeat a thousand times.........Michael Stipe's voice is truly an instrument.....mesmerizing, hypnotic, butter, sugar and all things good pouring out of his vocal chords combined with emotion expressed with every hand and body movement.......He and Gord Downie are so much alike with their moves. Love them both
It is top 10 for sure. 1. The Great Beyond 2. Imitation of Life 3. Night Swimming 4. Man on the Moon 5. Bad Day 6. Drive 7. Orange Crush 8. End of the World 9. Everybody Hurts 10. Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight.
I remember being like 13 when MTV released that video. I remember watching it with my uncle who was 41. He said " Shawn I'm not old! " I thought , your old dude. Now I'm 41. And screaming " I'm not old!!
I heard this on the radio about ten years ago, and thought "Neat song". Then it grew on me, and grew on me, and I became obsessed. I bought the song back then, and I still can't stop listening to it.
When I was a sophomore in high school I would fall asleep to this album playing on my CD stereo when I spent the weekends at my Grandma's house. This was the song that usually woke me up mid-sleep. Whenever I can't sleep and the pot doesnt do the trick Automatic for the People is always there for me.
Words cannot even begin to describe how great those times were. there was indy there was grudge there was Speed metal, Rap was in its Infancy There was drumb n base and techno was just getting started as well. Now what do we have? TikTok videos. I feel truly sorry for young people today who missed it all.
The first song I heard off Automatic For The People, and for me one of their best songs. Everything meshes together so well, from Michael's lyrics and vocals to Peter, Mike and Bill's instrumentals to John Paul Jones' magisterial string arrangement (the unsung genius in Led Zeppelin). I know Everybody Hurts and Man On The Moon are the songs usually referenced when speaking of Automatic, but this set the overall mood and tone of that record much better. A big part of the sound of 1992.
A national holiday should be declared in honor of Automatic For The People. An altar should be built for this masterpiece.

@@VNCE381 Well, I didn't know that, but appreciate the tells of Cobain, another Legend.
Hi I Recommend an Indie Song Called 'The Bond Villain' By Robert Nix
The thing about really good music is, it brings you back to a time, whether good or bad, doesnt matter always soothing.
Well said.
So broken down💔 Thinking, craying, tears just flowed...😢😢😢Maybe i drive to get off,
Maybe i walk🚶♀️ Tick-tock💔 Tick-tock 😢😢😢 Masterpiece from R.E.M. ❤
Needed some REM to handle the loss of my dad suddenly two weeks ago from cancer. He didn’t tell me because he knew my mum is battling stage 4 pancreas cancer. My mum loves REM! Like someone else commented it’s an underrated masterpiece! A rare gem compared to today’s music!
Kids listen Up….. This is Music! 🤟🏽🤙🏽. R.E.M. 💥💥2024!!
@@Sandra-mb3qe 👍💕
Did you not learn from "Whats the frequency kennith?"
Isso é lenda!
Music is whatever you like.
Tell me about it. Today’s music STINKS in comparison.
Que música, que época, alguém precisa criar a máquina do tempo.
Listening to R.E.M connects me to my Dad. May he rest in peace my sweet angel🙏🏽❤️
Sounds like your dad had great taste in music. ❤❤❤❤
Songs like this explain brilliantly why I can’t listen to the music of this generation. When I listen to it, I feel like crying but I don't know how to explain why. I simply love it. Masterpiece!
Aqui em casa ninguém ouve músicas atuais....meu filho 23 sente saudade dos anos 80 e 90...
music of this generation basically sucks!!!
@@alexpastor8582 I think they mean they can't listen to music from the generation that this song is from, because it fills them with inexplicable ennui.

I'm sixty years old and I just started listening to REM, I absolutely love the music and
i'm obsessed. I've really missed out on all these years of listening to them. Thank God I found them now.
Please enjoy they can take you many places
I’m happy to say that Automatic For The People is one of the greatest albums of the 90s I’ve ever heard.
I haven't heard this in decades.
Memories of being a young teenager.
Goosebumps.
What a haunting, beautiful track.
👍... All it is ❤️... From Germany, 🙏💕
Hauntingly brilliant, and one of the most underrated guitar songs of all tine.
Hi I recommend checking out a song and video called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
One of the best music videos from one of the best 90's bands
I went through a time warp in the 1970s but have been going back in time to listen to great music that I missed! R.E.M wow!
If it wasn't for Losing My Religion, this would be the best R.E.M. song ever made
Automatic for the People is the greatest REM album. Thumbs up if you agree
Life's Rich Pageant. Fables...Murmur....
@@askhams and Chronic town is the best EP ever
It's up there but New Adventures in Hi-Fi gets it for me!
Hard to know, I have most of them, but haven't got them all yet, 80's era and their last album. Its a great album though, I also love Up and Out Of Time
@@mikesinclair7135 Up is amazing! I only got into it after reveal but, for the first album without Bill Berry I think... It was amazing!
Automatic for the People was 1 of the great albums of the 90s. R.E.M. at the top of their game. Profound, emotionally driven & brutally honest.
R.E.M's songs appear to grow with me. While these songs meant various things to me when I was younger, they signify something new now that I'm 40. It's like a philosophy book that delves deeper and deeper.
Almost 2023 and still loving this song. Wish these guys would come back just one more time!
seria maravilhoso esse retorno
..
Amen to that bro 🎸 👍
This was before generation X
It's 2023, dude. I can attest to this with this comment.

Nearly 30 years, now. Wow.
So true

The National
The problem is not being young again
This Song came out during a VERY TUMULTUOUS Time. Marital Breakdown, Family Deaths, etc. This song gave Me a sense of structure, strength. Michael Stipe has the Ability to project Strong Emotions with His Voice. REM has and does still evoke strong emotions within me. This Song and Everybody Cries, always give Me goosebumps. 👍🏼
Спасибо R.E.M. и Ютубу за напоминание о лучших временах моей жизни ❤
Maybe yur crazy in da head
We're all crazy in the head. This song is calling all of us, listen to it over and over and over, never get tired.
don cook wow!!! Don't you love that? You had a creative enema by the power of music.
God that's powerful stuff indeed. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. God bless

Love them both
John Paul Jones string arrangements coming in at the absolute perfect times takes this song to another level
JPJ did the arrangement on this song? Didn't know that.
One of their most underrated tracks in my opinion.
Gabriel Tiller true
I can hardly call this underrated
It's arguable their best song and video.

The 90s were an amazing time to be a teenager. It was the music but also a movement. Kids today have no idea.
As a twenty year old also.
I heard this on the radio about ten years ago, and thought "Neat song".
Then it grew on me, and grew on me, and I became obsessed.
I bought the song back then, and I still can't stop listening to it.
VERY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! The most beautiful REM song in my opinion. It will always remain BEAUTIFUL !!!
I feel that way about EVERYBODY HURTS too
Stunning song. That guitar breakdown blows me away.
I love R.E.M. What an unbelievable band
I was 15 years old, the album was one of the gifts for my sixteenth birthday. 😢
😎
Powerful music awakening the days passed, listening to this song brings me back to times forgotten
My mum loves this band I have loads of memories with R.E.M playing in background. They grew on me literally
Words cannot even begin to describe how great those times were. there was indy there was grudge there was Speed metal, Rap was in its Infancy There was drumb n base and techno was just getting started as well. Now what do we have? TikTok videos. I feel truly sorry for young people today who missed it all.
You are 100% correct bruh! Music now is pure garbage....Although speaking of TikTok, he does say "Tick Tock" in the song :)

El sonido de los instrumentos en esta canción es impecable. La perfección.
A band with a tremendous volume of sound and music always vibrates my heart every day I must hear one of their songs in love with them.
With this song, R.E.M. finally inducted to Classic Rock Hall of Fame. Thanks to Mr. John Paul Jones' magical orchestral touch.
Jonesy! If a casual observer knew the stuff he did in the 60's, they would have never pictured him going into the Zeppelin.
One of the greatest songs EVER!
Damn I miss the 90s
"Drive" is their masterpiece, "What's The Frequency, Kenneth" is their zenith, and "Imitation of Life" is their triumph.
Oddly "Voice of Harold" is their most surprising success. How does that song possibly work? It shouldn't ... but they made it brilliant.
I think "Losing My Religion" was their zenith...
this was filmed beautifully. i’m still in awe decades later ❤️
