  • Aechmea fasciata Primera - Urn Plant - This is my favourite Bromeliad with beautiful leaves and an amazing flower.
In this video, I want to give you a care guide for this plant as there are some tips that are specific to this plant that is quite different and so I want to explain those and why we do things a little differently with this plant.
Then I’ll touch on repotting - propagation and so we have an all-around Aechmea Faciata species spotlight for you.
You can see why it’s a popular houseplant the leaves look stunning and they produce this stunning pink flower, and the good news about these houseplants is that they are generally quite tolerant plants so I would put this on the easy to care for scale so if you’re a beginner to houseplant care or if you’re quite skilled at killing houseplants this is a good one to keep as they have a reasonable tolerance for a wide spectrum of conditions. There is one thing however that they really won’t like is a hot south-facing sunny window as the direct sun will scorch these beautiful leaves in no time and your plant will quickly start to look really bad so if there is one thing to remember from this video is to keep it away from the strong direct sun. They do like plenty of light so be sure to keep it somewhere with plenty of light but just not the harsh stuff.
Now let’s move on to the watering because this plant has some special requirements, the nickname for this is the Urn plant and the reason for this is that it has a reservoir at the centre of the plant that is designed to trap rainwater and this is how it gets its water, so it’s like an urn at the centre here hence its name. So rather than always putting water in the soil you should pour some into the centre of the plant into that urn, this is how it takes on water, the roots are simply to anchor it in place, to cling into wherever it is growing. Having said that it’s important not to put too much water in the centre especially in winter because if the plant doesn’t use all the water and it just sits there all the time it could rot the plant, so what I do is water it a little, then after a week I careful tip it up and let any water still in there to come out, this also ensures any water in there is fresh and not getting stagnant which will also cause a problem, so just a little water and keep it fresh. If you have hard water in your area it's better to use rainwater if possible or Reverse Osmosis water if you don’t have rainwater available, this is because the trace metals and dissolved solids in hard water will not be good for the plant. I would say around once a month would give the soil a good watering and then leave it for at least another month, I do that mainly to keep the soil in good condition, if it never gets any water it just turns into dust and crumbles away and also because I use something in my water to keep the fungus gnat population down and so I like to use that to water the soil in case something has got into the soil at the garden centre so it’s a preventative thing, I will link what I use in the description.
So that’s the water taken care of let's talk about humidity, so this is a native plant of South America and so loves a humid environment but the good news for us in colder climates is that they do seem to be quite tolerant of dryer environments so I’ve seen these go through UK winters with quite dry centrally heated air and it hasn’t been affected badly.
So feeding this plant, it doesn’t really need much if any feeding, you certainly don’t want to feed into the urn, it won't like that, as it’s an epiphyte it takes on its nutrients through its leaves so if you do want to feed then use a foliar feed such as the types you can get for Orchids as they are Epiphytes too, but really they don’t need any food as once the flowering is over the lifecycle is complete and usually, the mother will die. You may well get pups from the side and then they in time will flower but it can take years for the pups to mature enough to flower so don’t hold your breath if you’re waiting for a new flower, but if you really like the leaves it will still be a nice plant to keep and enjoy and a fun project to try to get the new pups to flower.
Don’t be too put off as the flower can last for months before it finishes blooming so you will still get a lovely display from the plant for quite some time.
In terms of repotting for the mentioned reasons they don’t need repotting, they don’t use roots in the same way so they won’t grow out of their pot, if you do want to put it into a new pot for aesthetic reasons then you can use a free-draining soil mix like an orchid bark mix or even sphagnum moss. In the wild, these plants will literally be growing on trees and clinging on with their roots and in very little soil if any.
SO that pretty much covers everything for this type of Bromeliad, I think it's a great plant for beginners and something different to own and enjoy.
    Thanks for watching.

As I was given this plant as a gift but it came with no name. It took awhile to track it down as I thought I would repot it. Thankfully I found you video, i'm not going to touch it now! As i grow a few Air plants I now understand why It was given to
me, and its beautiful leaves will look amazing with my collection So thank you I now I know how to care for it.
The flower is just lovely, excited to seeing that

The pups will easily flower if you put the plant outside under a shaded tree during summers. All plants benefit tremendously from this healing period where they heal themselves out in nature. I've had mine for 17 years and during summers I place it under my birch tree in the garden where it is sufficiently shaded from the sun but still gets moderate amounts of sun. I've never fed it because the summer garden healing does wonders for it.

I bought one of these for my frog vivarium a few years ago, I'm now on my 3rd generation of pups from that first plant. I water occasionally (into the "urn" of the plant) with water from the frog tank itself and it's directly under both a plant growth LED (arcadia jungle dawn) and a reptile UVB light and it tolerates that high light very well. I'll be honest I often completely forget to water it for months at a time and the leaves will welt and remind me it needs some love, springs back to life very quickly after a water. Not a green thumb at all so very pleased with this seemly very hardy, no fuss plant

They don't always die after flowering. I've had mine for 3 years and 11 pups. She still looks good and #11 is still with her. I ignored those who told me to toss he'd as she was still pretty after the first 4 pups. Glad I did. 11 pups later she's hanging in there and her legacy will carry on. I urge you to try one of these as they don't disappoint.

I have a beautiful Aechmea fasciata with 10 pups! I'm a novice with plants but in the past year I've collected and kept 30 plants alive! I'm diving into cross pollination and propagation.
Anyway, I'm going to separate my pups but I was wondering if I cut off some pups and left the mother plant as is, will it produce more pups?
    Thanks for the video!

Hi Britt, It sounds like you're doing really well with your 30 plants! Let me know how you get on with the cross polination project, that sounds really interesting. I'm not sure if the mother will produce more pups after you separate them, I have only done it with a Guzmania Bromeliad and the mother didn't produce any further pups. Andy

From my experiance of doing both keeping the pups in the same earn seems to do better, taking them out slows growth a lot.

Do the pups always start from the outside base of the mum? Mine finished blooming but there is new growth coming from her center next to the dead flower bit. I'm wondering if that is just her new growth or a pup. Thanks.

Hi. Very informative video but where can I find your video on aechmea pup care, ie soil preference, light considerations, etc. I have a 3+ yo aechmea fasciata that has reared 10 pups in 3 years. After 7 months of no more pups i thought she was done but she's still a beautiful plant so i ignored ppl telling me to toss her out. And today i see # 11 pup. The first 8 are mostly doing well although not quite rooted perfectly as they still wobble in their 4" pots. They are in a south window, and I water the cups 1x week, are in an orchid bark perlite mix. But I'm seeing some contradicting information about soil for pups and light. The other 2 are on a lower shelf, south window and likewise doing well at about 6 months old. # 11 still tiny and still with the mother. Should I be watering the soil more than 1x month and not the cups? Slightly less light? I'd appreciate any information you could provide. I can send pics if you want. Thanks. Tom B. @HouseplantHacks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Wow 11 pups is amazing! I think Orchid bark and perlite is fine for these and your watering sounds ok, as you already have some pups separaely I would consider keeping #11 with Mom just to see if there is any differemce in progress, my pups are slow to mature. Maybe keeping with the mother helps them mature faster, I'm experimenting with this at the moment and will make a video when I find out more.

    • @TBiggs-lo5zg
      @TBiggs-lo5zg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for the reply. I will keep #11 with the mother as I did with all.pups until they were about 1/3 the height of the mother. Great to hear that the early information I applied is sound. They all.look pretty good. A few a a bit thinner than most without a cup to speak of yet but I still put a little distilled water in them each week. They are also all on humidity trays which I believe helps. I'll leave them all in the 4" clay pots they were first placed in until such time they require more room. It's a long process and an exercise in patience but it's rewarding that my 1st ever bromilead given to me by my son 3 years ago has produced so many offspring. Now just care as usual and in some time I hope they'll mature enough to flower and give a few away to those who appreciate them. Thanks again and I did subscribe and will watch more of your informative videos. Cheers from Pittsburgh PA. Tom B.

Hey Mr. Mouse, how'd you like the Bromalaid video today? I don't know, I think it kind of looks like a plant monster with that pink head and the two arms coming out the sides. Mr. Mouse, I think that's your own fault cuz you've been watching too many episodes of Lost in Space. Yeah. Well if it does attack just put your forcefield stands up and align them and you'll be ok. Sounds good, I'm just going to go back inside the Jupiter II and see if Will has the rayguns all put together just in case. Ok, see you later.
