How y'all gonna spend 4 seconds skimming over the Roci power slide past the UNN ship scene? That's one of my faves. When Holden's in the gunner's seat jabbing away at his screen "... that's why we're gonna have to do this." And gives a little *swip* move over to Alex's screen. Alex: "shit, Cap. You sure?" Holden: "we picked this fight. We're punching above our weight. If you've got a better idea, now's the time."
And the whole maneuver is awesomely laid out. The shots go through space: the Roci, the Razorback, the UNN ship. Man! Good visuals!
And I'd like to spend a moment to mention how Naomi in a spacesuit is awesome. IDK why. Dominique kills it with the dialogue when she's in the helmet.

A big point of why Tora Tora Tora was legendary was the fact Iconic director, Akira Kurosawa, worked on the movie too (Seven Samurai, Ran etc). Much respect for the foresight to involve a Japanese director for the Japanese point of view.

    • @galenrappe1199
      @galenrappe1199 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Unfortunately, Kurosawa's tendency towards perfectionism caused him to be removed by the producers from directing the Japanese half of the film, but thankfully, his work on the script did not go to waste.

That scene where Amos told Prax not to give up on finding Mei, makes me wonder Terry Chen's perspective. I really wish they had him on this show at last once to share his point of view. It is interesting for me now that Terry Chen is a father too. Awesome writing, acting, and over all show!

In re Top Gun, I was in my first class (Senior) year at USNA when it came out, just after 1st Class Cruise on Ticonderoga escorting Kitty Hawk and thus was able to cross deck onto the Kitty Hawk including time with the shooters (Catpult Crew) and Flags (LSO) on the flight deck for flight operations. So I'm in the theater watching the movie with my mother. She was white knuckling her seat on the flight deck operations. I said words to the effect of "no big deal, I was doing that last month." Fortunately she did not stroke out on the spot...

Guys, Lisa was a genie. The whole computer-meets-Barbie thing is just a big early '80s stand-in for rubbing a magic lamp. Once you lock that in, everything else - the powers, the granting of wishes, the sense that she's moving on to somebody else once Gary and Wyatt have what they really wanted - just falls right into place.

The dogfight between the DC-3 and Aermacchi in Quantum of Solace is actually very good. I like the realism of actually hearing them talking through their headsets. The DC-3 is not a quiet plane so there would be no casual conversation without them.

I was on active duty with the VF-21 Freelancers during the time before and during the filming of Top Gun, and when not aboard the USS Constellation (CV-64), we were stationed in Hangar 1 of NAS Miramar. Starting early 1986, we had to constantly "accomodate" the filming crews by parking our Tomcats closer to Hangar 2 so that actual maintenance of aircraft wouldn't be in the frame of any shots. As a small payback for the inconvenience of several months, all of the workcenter supervisors of four squadrons (VF-1, VF-2, VF-21, VF-154) got tickets to the premier. To be completely honest, after the first couple of scenes, nothing that happens in the entire movie is "real". When they say that the "hard deck" for a training hop is 10k feet, they mean it. The birds would never be anywhere near the hills and flats East of San Diego. They would realistically be between 15k and 25k altitude, not dashing between foothills. All that said, Ty is absolutely correct when he says that the Tomcat is the sexiest fighter ever built. Also the most capable of its day, and could still fly circles around F/A-18 "Lawndarts".

I'm not really into war movies but my favorite dogfight was in The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension, a movie that has my favorite spaceship exterior, my favorite human-possessed-by-an-alien, and the first Clancy Brown performance I ever saw. The Expanse has my favorite space battles, by far.

I swear I saw Wes a few years back at my local airport here in the Blue Skies of Montana. I was heading out on a business trip, gave the ritual "Head nod of acknowledgement" and headed up the stairs. Halfway up, I stopped, thought, I think I know that guy, turned around and looked back. The guy (Pretty sure it was Wes) was dicking with his phone, looked up to see me looking back at him, dipped his head back down, turned and walked quickly away toward the head in that waiting area. Still wasn't sure, but we generally give folks their space around here.

I've recently completed a re-watch of all the existing The Expanse episodes (I was originally catching up to these podcasts, but then decided not to wait around week by week).
To my shame I'd forgotten all about Anna, as excellently played by Elizabeth Mitchell. I was already a fan of her work in Lost and the V reboot, so it was a very pleasant surprise, for the second time, to see her on-screen as Anna. She absolutely rocks in the role, and it was good to hear that ,in Wes and Ty's experience, she's quite like that herself as well.

Power goes out: when the monster sabotages the generator in John Carpenter’s The Thing starting the final act of the movie.
The 80’s movies you cite are terrible genre movies that permeated that period. But for dogfights, I think the Battlestar Galactica reboot was pretty good. First, you have space craft not far removed from planetary aircraft and you have Newtonian mechanics being applied to space battles. Also, Triple-A in space…

My first thought was that I have a distinction between science fiction dog fights and earthly dog fights. It was weird to me that they mentioned some sci-fi dog fights. Then I realized that, yep, they are hosting a channel ABOUT A SCI-FI SHOW that I LOVE and I still had a problem with the distinction. Maybe it is because The Expanse brings such a visceral sense to the reality of what 'you' as a person would experience if you were in that situation as compared to so many films/shows that prefer to emulate the 'emotional experience' of what a person would go through. I prefer, as many of you (I think), a show that provides a visceral representation of the environment, with an emotional reaction as interpreted by the actors, navigating an incredible, complex, and well-layered tale by the authors.
Somehow, it elevated it from thinking of other 'sci-fi' movies to include along with this list and just include the more reality based. Totally silly, I know, but it's just the way my brain worked on this one.

Yes!!!! Iron Eagle!!! Watched that so many times as a kid. The speech Chappie gives was so awesome. Sequels were kind of a letdown. Yes 80's rocked. The Last Starfighter was another gem. The Expanse should have a Death Blossom moment. Also the new BSG had 1 or 2 great dogfights, they had some made for TV movies so technically in running.?. Dude yes! Independence day, the hype leading up to the release of that movie is something that can never be replicated. Cuba Gooding Jr needed a bigger role in Pearl Harbor, but most of the rest of the movie kinda blew.

So add on for best dog fights: WWII, "The Battle of Britain" . For scifi, "The Last Starfighter". Actually it's a horrible dog fight movie, but when your weapon of last resort is called "Death Blossom", it's got to be good.

While Star Wars isn't the definitive dogfight movie, Star Wars Episode 2 has the one redeeming quality (IMO) of having one of the coolest space dogfights ever - Obi-Wan vs. Jango Fett.

Yeah! Those seismic charges Jango used make basically no sense, but they were awesome and sounded amazing!

While I would soak up episodes of T&TG after some musshies, I have a distinct feeling that the idea of Wes presenting mid - hed - melt sounds a lot cooler than it would probably be...

Northrop F-5 was the "Mig" I have to mention the F4 Phantom that Viper was flying. That is a sexy aircraft.

Viper flew the A4 Skyhawk. F-4 phantom is a much larger aircraft, and has pilot and back seat radar operator

Oh, I forgot. Yes, the "MIG-28" in Top Gun is portrayed by the F-5E Tiger II. At the real life Top Gun of the 80s and most of the 90s, the "adversary" aircraft were all F5-Es and A-4E/A-4F/TA-4J Skyhawks.

Two movies that should have been included, Blue Max and The Battle of Britain. The Death Star space battle sequence in Star Wars was inspired and in come cases taken word for word from The Battle of Britain, including the famous call sign line, " Red Five standing by ".

And the discussion continues! Over at The Expanse Geeks Facebook page, still duking it out over whether Amos can be a sociopath if he supports good parenting in space.

I had a funny example of the cell phone problem once in college. A bunch of us were walking through the woods at night (like stupid college students do), when I noticed that two of my friends were missing. So I pulled out my cell phone to call one of them. About 30 ft away we see a glow and hear his cell phone ringing, followed by him shouting, "Dang it!" Found out that he and the other person had peeled off to scare us when we walked back. So yeah, cell phones solve a lot of problems, even in real life.

One of my favorite of all time movies, "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" basically doesn't work in the cell-phone era.
