I've really been enjoying the new Hoka Zinal - it's low profile, vibram grip and lightweight make it a solid summer trail runner. But, at $160, it's a spicy meatball. What do you think of the new trail shoe from Hoka?

    • @BoKristensen
      @BoKristensen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hey, how well does it breath? I feel like most trail uppers are so overbuilt for what I need and would trade off that protection for feet that aren't overheating. If you have any recommendations, I'm all ears.

Isn’t it similar to torrent 2? I don’t see why I would want this over the torrent 2 as both seem to be targeting similar runs

I really want to try this shoe, I loved the original Torrent with its lightweight features. I do want to know if it will go longer though... 20 miles +... it's £160 here and I agree it's a high price. I tried the mafate speed but unlike the advertising it is way to heavy for long distances and has literally zero grip on wet chalk!

Hi quick suggestion -> You already have criteria such as build quality, comfort, fit, price and looks. It would be great if you could add a "sustainability" element to it. And research / ask makers about a) environmentally friendly (recyclable? how long does it take in a landfill to breakdown?) and b) socially friendly. (Any sweat shop in the supply chain?). At the start it may be very difficult to enquire and a lot of shoes wouldn't maybe have a high ratio. But in this day and age I think it is a good criteria to choose a product. Thanks!

Great idea!! I have asked similar questions in the past, don’t get much back in the way of specifics, BUT, I agree that this is incredibly important to address! Even just green practices in manufacturing/development/etc. Salomon is putting some of their initiatives public which is nice to see.

Great review. I totally agree with you, because I too fell in love with these shoes. Actually bought them on 'looks', but they really run great! (Up to 25km) They are nice, light and good fit. But... after 100km I can already see considerable wear on the studs, I only have 1 or 2mm left at the front. And then they are quite expensive.

    • @dermarcb

durability is not the only factor that counts, when it comes to the price.
This shoe is all about performance - when lightweight and responsiveness comes into play, durability can suffer.

FWIW the Zinal and Torrent 2 have the same midsole foam, but the Hoka stats indicate the Zinal has 20% more foam (477 cm3) than the Torrent 2 (395 cm3). I don't have a big gripe with the difference in price based on that info. But still.

I picked up a pair! Super excited to take them out tomorrow. $160 was a tough pill to swallow. Feels like I’m spending $40 just for Vibram over the Torrent.. but then I put it on. That tongue, that lockdown. So comfortable. It’ll be hard to go back to the Torrent(my previous fav)! What sucks is my other favorite shoe is the Evo Speedgoat ($159). From your footage, your forefoot seems to be pushing outward, spilling over the shoe... possibly another durability issue with the lack of support of the upper material. The mesh is indestructible. my first pair did over 1200km. yes I had to glue the toe bumper and after the kilometers the lugs were completely gone. but the mesh was still like the first day. I ran around the planet with the shoe in really lousy surroundings. Dolomites, Patagonia, Zion NP, ... . river crossings are also no problem. EF has little material that could hold moisture. After all the kilometers, I was also rafting with the shoe. no joke.

Catamount is narrower and far more responsive. Fit is more precision in the Catamount as well.

It looks like a good shoe but its way too expensive. I stay with the speedgoat

Just like Porsche. Remove seats reduce weight, radios, comfort features & charge more, a lot more. Hokas my favorite, but the worst durability of any shoe on the market.

      Worse than Altra?

I think if you're a trail runner you should at least try them once. I rode out a couple of pairs before going back to what I have always ran in, they never got to the 'feel natural/comfortable' stage and as soon as the trail narrowed I got (or felt like I got) clumsy in Hoka's. Each to their own but yeah they're definitely not for everyone, and I guess the price will automatically alienate some runners. I'm sure Jim W will draw a lot of people into the brand and it will be interesting to see how they're viewed say a decade from now

And, no discounts on Running Warehouse on Hoka’s. I do still think that Hoka is on top when it comes to trail shoes but they’ve yet to produce a super foam and their replacement cycles on some of their models is longer than the vast majority of their competitors. The Mafate has only had upper updates since it was introduced - the midsole and outsole has remain unchanged.

@@sram1996 Not sure how much running you do but i disagree! Hoka is my favorite but they do not last as long as any of the competition none.

@@markscott2259 I should’ve replied to the video and not you because I don’t disagree with you about the durability - it’s been a mixed bag for me for sure, but better than Altra, though I’m not sure that’s saying much. 😂I think performance-wise Hoka is probably still on top only in the trail world. I run ~3000+ miles a year, the vast majority of which is on trail, with ~500k feet of climbing.

far too expensive for such cheap materials ... hoka should invest more in quality and cushioning instead of sponsoring athletes ... don't forget the normal runners made hoka great
