Loved this vid! + Engine swap outside in the crap English weather + Sacrificial yellow jacket, guess he hated it + Hobnob eating skills + Genuine joy when it worked Top top work lads
I’m a disabled veteran and had to stop working on projects a while ago after injuring my spine while on duty. Your channel has inspired me to find a local club who are happy for me to pitch up in my wheelchair and help out where I can. It’s not the same as working on my own car but it’s still fantastic to spend time with like minded people. The car community really is the best. If I had the money I would buy a mostly finished bespoke vag group (high mileage hero) diesel and put the final touches on myself. It would bring me such joy. Thank you so much for your channel.
JCV no the top Gear table was made out of a Porsche 928's V8 Engine after the 'Porsches for 1500 Quid Challenge' and he couldn't sell it because it broke so he took it apart and made the seats and table out of parts of that 928.
Car Flip that's typical for hydraulically actuated lifters. it goes away after a few minutes as you saw. it can be avoided by soaking the lifters in clean oil prior to install.
Alex Kersten I literally can't believe people actually watch the video to bitch about the mugs... Plz Reply. btw I'm happy Phil is alive and well, I'm now gonna V8 swap my MX-5
I started with an NC, because my parents didn't want me to get an "old" car... It's a 2008 with the electric hardtop. Also the best decision i've made yet, because i don't want to know what the people in my area would've done to a softtop by now. Two antennas have already been stolen (I'm not bothering with replacing it another time xD) and 2 people bumped my car while parking (without reporting it)... I bet the softtop would've been sliced into bits by now :/ But the car is the best of all the cars i've driven yet :D
I always wondered why would anyone cut so much from the video. Seeing everything, from opening an engine to tea-making makes it so much more interesting and fun to watch.
As a home mechanic myself, I do can relate how happy you guys feel after overhauling Phil. It must be a long wait. My mx-5 are also be needing overhaul since last year September but due to my financial constraints and losing my job, things have to wait for a while. Anyway great job on making Phil run again. God bless you all.
This video sums up working on ANY vehicle. Weather it is mods or rebuilding an engine. A lot of short temper, swearing, wanting to punch something, inpatients, and fed-upness, but in the end, it is so satisfactory when it works with little to no issues.
Im so happy for you Alex. I always watch all your videos and that Phil is working you can try to boost it even more so it can get moaaaaar power. Good luck. Greetings from Lithuania. Young Car Guy
What I do love about this chanel is that you can find real emotions here. Feels like it is you started the engine for the first time..Absolutely amazing
I watch a LOT of car videos on you tube and have to say I love this channel. Interesting , real world cars and problems instead of yet another supercar review from most of the other big channels... yawn! Really good down to earth lads too. Keep up the good work guys and keep making videos like the MX5 journey and latest IS200 adventure!
Congrats. It's an almost euphoric feeling when you first turn the key on an engine you've rebuilt yourself and it starts. Not many people outside the motor trade get to experience that intense feeling of achievement these days.
I understand Alex' pain with Phil. When my nb8a stuffed up it took my 6 months and with no mechanical knowledge to get my mx5 back up and running with a new motor. Seeing Alex and Gareth's reaction bought me back some good memories of how chuffed i was.
One of the best videos I've seen in ages, the elation at the end of the video sums up the true petrolhead feeling of hard work being put into a project, blowing the engine, replacing it and then first time it successfully starts up (happened to me, what a feeling) ... Well done boys and welcome back Phil!
This video is so great. And it's great not because it has been well captured and edited, but because when Phil started, he felt so happy ans has a smile on his face.
All the oil drained out of the lifters when the head sat. This causes the lifters to collapse, creating a gap between the base circle of the cam and the top of the bucket. This causes the lobe to slam into the bucket (creating the awful tapping noise) instead of gently sliding across it. As oil circulates, the lifters draw in the oil and take up the gap, allowing the cam to smoothly slide across the lifter, quieting down the valve train. It's why HLA-equipped Miatas are super clackity on a cold start, but quiet down within a minute or two.
It happens with us American coffee drinkers, at least to us guys who wash our own dishes. A splash of bleach in there for a short time makes em brand new.
Happens when you wash your dishes lazily and don't rinse them correctly. I've heard in the UK it's not uncommon to soap up the dishes and then just leave them to dry... I hope it's not true.
TheCarPassionChannel posted an awesome clutch-change video yesterday, and you guys post up an engine swap today. Good days to be a miata guy. Glad to see Phil lives again!
We need more of these type of videos. They just feel more legit. And like they're actually doing the stuff that most car guys do on their free time as well.
congrats on getting Phil running! I just bought my first turbo car, a brand new focus st! Break in is taking what feels like forever but i cannot wait to feel this car's full potential! you ever in california, we must go cruising!
Bene Apparently we 'Dive' on the wrong side, I'm guessing you're american? I'm pretty sure people I'm America also drink tea, and we drink coffee just like you do on the other side of the pond. but why Bitch about the British specifically? what have we ever done to you?
I suggest to swap it with a BMW 3.0L V8 from a 530i or 730i, I think it would quite easily handle a supercharger but it would also be nice N/A (please like this comment to make it visible)
I genuinely felt happy for you guys when you started the car up. It's an awesome feeling when it all comes together after a lot of grueling hours of hard work. Well done guys. Greetings from Denmark
who the fuck puts the milk in after they take the tea bag out? what the fuck it goes: tea bag sugar water (just off the boil) brew for 5 minutes milk (just a splash) remove bag stir the fuck out of it job done great brew
iamawatermelon ok my turn to chime in: Tea bag Sugar (honey for the 'Mericans) Water just before it boils Stir and squeeze bag against wall of mug Brew for 2-5 minutes Remove bag Pour milk to taste Stir until consistent tan colour Grab a digestive Enjoy.
That ST jacket !!

when Alex gets the V6 he should save the old engine, put a thick piece of glass on it and make a coffee table out of it
Weesli 7 like the top gear table?
Eran Van Der Horst exactly like the top gear table :)
Not a bad idea, i think the Top Gear coffee table were made of a V12 but still nice
I have a blown rotary engine that I plan on doing that with. I bet he'll sell his, though, as it is still probably working then.
JCV no the top Gear table was made out of a Porsche 928's V8 Engine after the 'Porsches for 1500 Quid Challenge' and he couldn't sell it because it broke so he took it apart and made the seats and table out of parts of that 928.
this is really nice to see, Phil back together. props for working outside in the lovely english weather. well done!
Boosted Miata I had lost all hope, then this video. great to see Phil alive again.
Boosted Miata Yes! Phil!
Car Flip that's typical for hydraulically actuated lifters. it goes away after a few minutes as you saw. it can be avoided by soaking the lifters in clean oil prior to install.
Car Flip yeah, that motor is toast already, lol!
What would Don say? no, it's fine. That's normal.
i actually love the casual style of recording!
Phil lives again! 😃
People bitching about the dirty f***ing tea mugs....my gf actually bleached them and now they're spotless! Hope you're happy ;)
Alex Kersten I literally can't believe people actually watch the video to bitch about the mugs... Plz Reply. btw I'm happy Phil is alive and well, I'm now gonna V8 swap my MX-5
I love the mx 5
I'm just glad I'm not the only one who eats a biscuit out the pack like that
Don't think that's the real Alex..
And I bet she was _really_ happy about having to do that.
Good job devouring that cookie ^^
THIS

Engine sounded bad at first because the oil hadn't fully circulated, or been primed before starting it.
I bought my first car a couple of weeks ago, Miata NB 99'
Best decision I've ever made, puts a smile on my face everytime
#Miataisalwaystheanswer

JR Am I the only one who thinks that Miata sounds terrible? Mazda (how it's called in Germany) sounds better for me...
TeddyBär Its called Mazda everywhere. In Germany it's called MX-5 instead of Miata
Yeah I'm from Holland, they are Mazda MX5's here. I like to call them Miata's tho
Lucky guy!
I've got a soft top in amazing condition, love it!
It's a shame some fuckwits would do that dude...
"There's no I in team Ethan, but there is Tea."
Very British
Saw this notification and immediately stopped working to watch this!
He's alive! He sounds like a dying transit van from the 90's but he's alive
This is probably my all time favourite Car Throttle video. You guys should definitely do more vlogs of just daily life.
That's the plan :)
I always wondered why would anyone cut so much from the video. Seeing everything, from opening an engine to tea-making makes it so much more interesting and fun to watch.
I like listening to the conversations and the odd little comments. Proper friends!
I second this !
Blood, sweat and dick/sex jokes. I love to see car guys being car guys all over the world.
As a home mechanic myself, I do can relate how happy you guys feel after overhauling Phil. It must be a long wait. My mx-5 are also be needing overhaul since last year September but due to my financial constraints and losing my job, things have to wait for a while. Anyway great job on making Phil run again. I've never clicked so fast on a video!! ALSO.... PHILL ISSS ALIVEE!!!! YEAHHH! SO HAPPY FOR YOU MAN!!
This video sums up working on ANY vehicle. Weather it is mods or rebuilding an engine. A lot of short temper, swearing, wanting to punch something, inpatients, and fed-upness, but in the end, it is so satisfactory when it works with little to no issues.
The look of accomplishment and satisfaction on alex's face when he finally gulps down that biscuit like a seagull is priceless
I think this is one of the best CarThrottle videos I've seen, I really like the style it's filmed in!
Yes!!
Im so happy for you Alex. I always watch all your videos and that Phil is working you can try to boost it even more so it can get moaaaaar power. Good luck. Greetings from Lithuania.
Young Car Guy
I'm so happy! 2 projects going on in the same channel! And not every channel... My favorite channel!!!!!!!
Phil is alive wow... really happy for you Alex I hope you can get to doing more vidios... how's Colin doing
joshua boon I just spotted Colin in the background at 9:36.
joshua boon foreground :)
Great video! Good to see Phil kinda alive again!

I wish I had a friend like Gareth
when that car turned on and they hugged, that is what genuine happiness and joy looks like. good job fellas
Honestly my fav Car Throttle video. It's simply real and relatable.
Gives me a throwback to old McM vids
Yep.... I have a feeling that there's a bit of a connection with the Marty n Moog. The music is very MCMish.
I’ve been crying for the past 15 min over that nice yellow ST jacket turning black😭
The world is a better place with "Phil" in it.
Everyone needs a friend like Gareth
when he said ''it needs a V6'' my immediate thoughts were
NO PUT A STRAIGHT 5
I understand Alex' pain with Phil. When my nb8a stuffed up it took my 6 months and with no mechanical knowledge to get my mx5 back up and running with a new motor. Seeing Alex and Gareth's reaction bought me back some good memories of how chuffed i was.
This is one of the most British car throttle videos tea, biscuits, and bad weather😂
exact same situation here.. just ordered a "new" engine.. wish me luck this one's alright...
Good work!
That bright orange ST jacket getting wt and dirty xd
One of the best videos I've seen in ages, the elation at the end of the video sums up the true petrolhead feeling of hard work being put into a project, blowing the engine, replacing it and then first time it successfully starts up (happened to me, what a feeling) ... non car guys will never understand how fun and fulfilling this is.
vcdrny ikr
This video is so great. And it's great not because it has been well captured and edited, but because when Phil started, he felt so happy ans has a smile on his face.
He sounds like he needs a new muffler bearing
Adijan Coers of course you heard that throug a youtube video ;D
Adijan Coers and blinker fluid?
Adijan Coers yess and dont forget to fent the brakes to meke them more efficient.
Andrew Smart nah soapy water should be enough
idk why that was so funny

Am I the only one wondering why his mugs were so filthy inside?
Perhaps this wasn't the first time he has used the dish brush to clean engine components...
Edgar Hernandez they were very tea stained lol they must drink a lot of tea
Edgar Hernandez yeah man I hate tea stained mugs.
It happens with us American coffee drinkers, at least to us guys who wash our own dishes. A splash of bleach in there for a short time makes em brand new.

Gotta say I admire your love for the car. Lots of us enthusiast build a love for a car and its hard to let it go.
This day was weird..
-I saw 2 Miata's on the road today..
-Watched a movie where they crashed a Miata
-Car Throttle posts a video with a Miata.....
Miata is always the answer
Seeing the joy and hugging when Phil started is exactly why I love working on cars. So glad to see Phil alive again!
I probably wouldn't take even just my license plate off with a yellow jacket. He swapped a whole freaking engine in one lol R.I.P. yellow jacket.
Phil is the reason why I subbed to this channel, good to see it's back!
IT REALLY NEEDS A V6 PLZ GET ONE !!!!
OR A V8!!!
Konstantinos he said summer
One of the funniest videos you guys have done yet! Very entertaining!
That biscuit eating is why Alex gets the big bucks
What I have been expecting! But a 10 minutes video about Phil is not enough for most of us I think! Happy to see Phil alive again. :)
Alex that car is philthy 😉
Never knew I'd be happy to see Phil back! Awesome!
THANK THE LORD!!!!...
...GARETH !
KAL 1 exactly,!
This is such a happy moment in my life. I legit started to shout from joy. Phil is so fucking great

Was watching all vids on Phil and was like is this dude scrapped or alive and my question has been answered. So happy for the little red dude :)!
Alex's GF must hate him because of what hes like with cars LOL
Justas !!!! She can use the time to date other guys.
Wow, man, this was hella savage.I don't know if I hope that Alex reads this, or if I hope he does not
I'm so happy right now
Phil is back! Looking forward to more videos!
Put a straight 5 in phil instead of a V6
audis 2.2T from the 90s
that's a great idea :)
Christian V put a volvo engine so will it never break again
from a v70 t5 :D 260 hp
Christian V AGREE!!!
Phil is really alive watching men having fun always good to watch
lifters lacking lubrication on initial startup, i think.
Indeed.
They should have removed the coils and cranked the engine for a bit to get the oil all moving around first mybe? :P
Shoulda dunked the lifters
me thinks those rod bearings are toasted.
Alliteration
TheCarPassionChannel posted an awesome clutch-change video yesterday, and you guys post up an engine swap today.
Good days to be a miata guy. Glad to see Phil lives again!
#mazdagang
We need more of these type of videos. They just feel more legit. And like they're actually doing the stuff that most car guys do on their free time as well.
I think maybe you should wash your cups abit better looked grim inside
jack hunt Stained from tea
Lol that's what I picked up on too.
congrats on getting Phil running! I just bought my first turbo car, a brand new focus st! Break in is taking what feels like forever but i cannot wait to feel this car's full potential!

Bene Bene yeah, fuckjng hell, us Brits diving into the left hand side of the pool ffs

Dude sorry.
Bene Thanks for your apology, I'm not trnyna start an argument
I have my Phil and I know the feeling! Well done team! There is no Car throttle without Phil, you know!

Pepino Rides last one was 50k
0_0 wel there goed thr dream of taking part...
9:19 Can relate. That Halfords tool set looks just like mine, complete with broken hinge! Haha!
I suggest to swap it with a BMW 3.0L V8 from a 530i or 730i, I think it would quite easily handle a supercharger but it would also be nice N/A (please like this comment to make it visible)
Foxter he is gonna swap it with a Jaguar v6
Foxter no way the v8 is to heavy it gonna mess the weight distribution it gonna handle very poorly
@@zangamadrid5214 with a ls3 the weight distribution is 53/47. Your point is ?
You guys are awesome. Taking apart an engine in your garden and it starts first time!
Those are some dirtyass tea cups lmao
Adds flavour
Holy shit. How did you put it all back together in same day. That's mind blowing. Good job man
*has a TH-cam channel about cars with almost 1.6 million subscribers*

yeeeeeaah! Phil is back!!!! have waited so long for the return on Phil.
is ethan actually dumb at car's
or is it an old joke that has been stressed for too long
Ahmed Moosaji he is genuinely not a car guy, I met him at a car show with Alex and he had no interest what so ever
h3h3 wannabe naa i cant believe it 😂lol
y does he work for car throttle then😂😂😅
Ethan is just dumb. But yes, he is genuinely dumb at cars.
Car Throttle thanks for the reply 😎😎😎

Hugging a men when your miata runs again 🤔 how typical... Jk good to so it up and running again!
Hello from New Zealand.I'm currently doing up a 1989 MX5 Eunos Roadster.Loving it!
19 views and 261 likes. Very logical
not sure about how much i learnt about engine building but saw my first wood pecker in action so cheers for that i guess
Put a rotary engine , 1jz or 2jz , or 5 cylinder
Or v9 xd
1jz and 2jz has been tryed before but would never fit a miata/mx5.
rotary
Google it dude - 1JZ & 2JZ has been done before, many times.
tubejorrit just an idea
HaxoResc oh
Brilliant result! Glad you managed to get it all back together in time!
Damn dude, these mugs look disgusting! wtf
DoctorSkyway tea stains the mug. not dirty just stained.
Awesome!! Can't wait to see it running properly
LS Swap it!
Vanila Kung 😂
You know that ain't happening, man.
People in the UK are allergic to LS swaps.
Lazy Swap
Best vid from CT so far!
who the fuck puts the milk in after they take the tea bag out? what the fuck it goes:
tea bag
sugar
water (just off the boil)
brew for 5 minutes
milk (just a splash)
remove bag
stir the fuck out of it
job done great brew
Never mind the order... that tea looked like it had half a mug of milk in it!!!
No, this is how it goes. Tea strainer and tea leaves go in. Then water. Brew for 3 - 5 minutes depending on the tea. Remove the strainer and drink.
actually it goes like this
no tea bag
drink literally anything other than nasty ass tea
iamawatermelon ok my turn to chime in:
Tea bag
Sugar (honey for the 'Mericans)
Water just before it boils
Stir and squeeze bag against wall of mug
Brew for 2-5 minutes
Remove bag
Pour milk to taste
Stir until consistent tan colour
Grab a digestive
Enjoy.
Ok, my turn...
Boiling water
Tea bag (good old English breakfast)
Milk
Brew for 1 minute
Remove tea bag
Drink that shit
Well done lads, what friendship is all about, and glad to see you all are!
