  • To continue our travels around the country we had to go back to Prince Albert where we left off in the last episode. On our way there we stopped off at Matjiesfontein. This historic town situated along the N1 is a must visit. This little town was able to give us a few meters of gravel road to travel on, which is always our goal, some gravel road somewhere. #dustbugs #travel #southafrica #travelsouthafrica

    That grey building that you did mentioned, were called Block Houses (Blok huis) They were erected in the Boer war by the British to stop the Boers 💓 for travelling freely. Its been erected from the Cape up to the Transvaal. They are every where. That one is still in a very good state next to the train bridge. I will say it's was build to look after the bridge and protect it.

      Yes, thank you so much for the info! 👌🏻We learnt very quickly that they were called blockhouses because we saw them at most train bridges on our travels. 🚂 We believe there are over 450 in the country, so you're right, they are everywhere! We appreciate you watching. 😊

    Wow! Memories from childhood. We had a lovely holiday home in Kleinmond. Every weekend we would go there and almost every holiday, those that we were not in the Karoo and Free State chasing trains!

      How sweet your childhood must've been. 😊 One of us also used to visit Kleinmond during school holidays, all the way from Gauteng. Those were wildly exciting times for a young one. 😁 The other one lived in the Free State for many years and sometimes still think of it as home, especially as far as rugby teams go. 🐆🧡 Neither of us got to spend any proper length of time in the Karoo in our younger days, so that makes us all the more grateful that we're able to do it now. 😎

    That red bus for sight-seeing is used for the shortest tour in the world. One leaves the Lord Milner hotel, drive some metres, turn left and that's it. It's a wonderful gag especially for the Pride of Africa (Blue Rrain) guests. Saw it on YT.

      Wow, that is so interesting! We didn't know the bus even moved still! 🚌 Thank you for sharing this with us, we have made a note for when we pass through there again.

    Wow, this brought back some memories! We stopped in Matjiesfontein back in 1985 when I went for a trip from Witbank to Stellenbosch with my grandparents. It's good to see the red bus, Lord Milner Hotel, and the train bridge with the block house is still there, just as I remember them!

    Visited the Strand in 2013 and was amazed of all the development. My first visit was in 1976 after matric to visit a local young lady, at the time it was a small coastal town. She stayed in Brand street, and my B+B in 2013 was in the same street. Matjiesfontein is awesome

    Not to sound too ancient, but we once went to Matjiesfontein about 40 odd years ago and had a huge breakfast at the Losieshuis (Boarding House), with everything you could imagine - cost one Rand each!!

      That sounds like something we'd still like to do, overnight and have dinner there. 🏤 This video was of one of our earlier trips where I just wanted to travel on back roads and not through towns so much, so I didn't go into the hotel. Definitely something on our wish list! Good to know their food is delicious too! It's a town full of character and charm and it literally felt like we were driving in the past. 😎🚗

    Comparing to Pilgrims Rest? Only comparison I can see is maybe preservation of the buildings. I've been to both towns, Pilgrim's more recently than Matjiesfontein.
    Glad on this view, Matjiesfontein still looks in great shape.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't been to Pilgrim's Rest in over 20 years, but we got a distinct similar vibe in Matjiesfontein than we experienced in PR of an old preserved town with quaint buildings lining the street. We hope to get back to Mpumalanga later this year and will go check out PG to refresh our memories. 😁🚙 Matjiesfontein will get a do-over again one day too, this video was shot when we just started our channel and didn't explore a town in greater detail as we like to do nowadays.

      @@DustBugsTravel Yeah. Matjiesfontein station :-)
      lol. Over 20 years ago... probably when I was last at Matjiesfontein. Not that far off the N1 either.

      We will certainly put this one in the memory banks for next time when we decide to stop there. We've often wondered how it would be to overnight in the hotel there, we might just give that a try too. 😁
