"... in the future we will be able ... to cultivate an appreciation for things like art and music that is created by human beings..." Well, that sounds very much like our past.

Styx at least Dennis DeYoung predicted this in 1983. Like it or hate it, “Mr Roboto” was proven prophetic.

All I’ll say is this. AI will never be able to produce something as introspective and thought provoking as The Wall, or as raw and gritty as Led Zeppelin II. The future of good art belongs to humanity.

About 20 years ago, I was learning to play guitar. I didn't get very far other than chords. With some other amateurs with the same skill level, we wrote and recorded our own songs. It was very cool to use Udio to enter the lyrics and got a finished product. I was able to add sections, solo sections, intros and endings. I love it, but I'm not going to try to monetize them.

It will only become a matter of time before those who pick up a guitar, sit at a piano, or a drum kit are history. Because if we're not careful record companies will create their own AI Artists, performing material that the record companies own, and the only ones making money are these big companies, like a Rock n Roll 1984. Music and music creation should be organic, coming from the heart. Not dehumanised crap. The whole point is to identify and empathise with what the artist is composing and singing, you lose that, then music as we know it is along with creative thought is dead.

A lot of today's pop and rap music already isn't using a lot of real drums, guitars or pianos. But, at least the producers are programming/ selecting the computerized beats, sounds and melodies.

I just recently got active in the ai art creation. About fifteen years ago I thought could not do what an artist would. It was the beginning of photoshop. Now I need to say ai is doing a great job creating stunning pictures, if you are able to prompt right and find the right models for it. But the ai still can't get the fine nuances right what makes the difference between a great picture and an art piece. It takes hundreds of tries to get close, but not on point. Maybe that will change. It saves time and sometimes I like the interpretation of that ai which leads to new ideas.
Nevertheless the ai learns from what humans created before. You can notice that, if your imagination goes wild and you tell the ai exactly what you see in your inner eye. The outcome is mostly not even close, because it never saw anything remotely like that before.
As long the input for the ai is limited, the results will be kinda unpredictable in a way.
I hope to see some day tools that are that can manage those jobs. For artists it saves a lot of time and money. The ideas a filmmaker has can be reality without needing a big budget, a musician can work on songs he could not bring to life, artists could see, if their idea is worth the oil they need to make a masterpiece.
The human today can think out of the box and I believe that will stay that way for quite some time.

It’s only a matter of time before the record labels realize the full potential of AI music. After all. Why pay a songwriter to make a hit single when you can just pay a computer tech to get on his/her computer to get AI to make a hit single for you. Why pay session musicians to play and record that song when you can get that AI to make the music for you. Why pay an artist to sing your song when AI can sing it in any voice that you choose.
The future of music will probably involve more and more AI generated music. The kids’ll love it. The recording industry will love it even more when they can make close to 100% profit on their artificially generated music. And we’ll just have to settle on listening to the music we grew up on. And that’s alright by me.

Remember when MIDI was created and everyone was saying no more orchestras, bla bla bla and now they are more orchestras all over the planet than ever. AI might go a long way but it can never replace a classical piano player. Why? AI has no heart or soul. Its just good imitation.

    • @cvdinjapan7935

The heart and soul of AI music can be found in the audience. As long as there is an audience for music, no matter who or what created it, there are plenty of hearts and souls to be found.
Even music performed from the heart by living, breathing people won't resonate with some people. That's okay. And it's okay to love AI music too. I know I love it, and my love gives it all the heart and soul it needs.

More than 20 years ago, a classical grand piano was on sale. It wasn't cheap, but not only did it have built in midi, it was engineered so the key hammers could strike the strings as if a pianist was playing. An AI composition, saved as a midi file, would be indistinguishable from a pianist playing.

I agree that one has to have a definition of art before discussing whether or not AI can produce it. But I don't think that your definition of art -- something that elicits emotional response -- is necessarily a good one. Lots of things can elicit an emotional response -- such as road kill, for instance. 😃 (Seriously, I used to drive around an elderly aunt who would respond very emotionally to flattened fauna.) I think a better definition of art might be, "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power." (Though I think we can also include art that is not visual such as music.) But I think that both human creative skill and imagination are crucial in designating something as art. That's why I don't think either a paint-by-number kit or AI-produced pictures and music qualify as art. However, I do think that both paint-by-number kits and AI generated pictures and music qualify as play -- an essential and very human activity.

very well stated thoughts on this topic, which IMHO will be the most controversial thme in mussic discussion at least this and the next year. so here are my 2 cents: I just created my 4th AI tune as some kind of jingle for a local cat rescue home here in my area in germany and everybody just loves it, they might put it on their website - if someone asks who is singing, I will say AI. before that, I did 2 birthday songs for friends and a promotional song for a charitable association, they all liked it. sometimes it was quite easy to get decent results from my prompts, sometimes it was very hard and I had to be persistant to get a nice result. your statement that art is something that elicits emotional response reinforced my opinion that AI creations are indeed art - I am reminded to the works of P.K Dick, who spend his artistic lifetime trying to convince the world that androids could be much more human than humans themselves in some cases - and indeed, my AI songs did elicist emotional response to my surprise. does this make me the artist? yes - I am determining the final result and the song is a product of my personal will.the AI is just a tool like instrumental plugins and sample libraries.
I also have to say that while spending most of my 6 decades o life listening intensively to music of all kinds, while having no traditiional musical education at all. during the last 5 years, I made my own music with a DAW, sample libraries and instrumental plugins just for fun, but I did also some theater music for local university acting groups. I am glad that I don´t have to earn any money with my art...

If AI gets good enough, how will we know the difference between AI and human creations? It will be up to the music's presenter to tell the truth. Unless they create a technical way to tell. A lot of today's Top 40 music already sounds like it was made by computers. ha! A lot of similar sounding dance/ pop and rap music.

You will never know. Even if you see a band playing their new song live, they could very well have generated it using AI, then just performed it live with a few substitutions here and there to "make it their own." The cat's out of the bag. The shadow of doubt will always be there. We just have to accept it.

Udio has higher quality voices, but produces dull and forgettable melodies.
Suno is not as clear, but you're more likely to wind up with something groovy.
    I prefer Suno.

“If anything the AI is the composer.” No, if anything the artists whose songs were scraped for training data were the composers.

    • @cvdinjapan7935
      @cvdinjapan7935 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If a person is inspired by the work of other artists, and blends elements of the things they like into something new, it doesn't mean the artists who inspired them are the composers. Those artists would not want to be credited as the "composers" for AI songs which they didn't write anyway.
It's okay for people to get inspired and take ideas from others, and blend them into new creations, and it's okay for AI to do it too.

This whole AI crap is all but a fad, I feel. No computer could take away from what a human being could do. It's all flavor of the month type of stuff. That jingle right there sounded horrible. The AI generated clip presented as a movie trailer looked fake. I see the AI generated art, but what can a real artist do? It may be a popular thing now, but in time, it will just fade away.

I hated it too, even though I love AI Music... Some people just like Udio better because the vocals are clearer. But clear vocals on a lifeless melody do nothing for me. I prefer Suno as it creates music that's actually catchy and memorable almost every time.
