Somehow Braveheart managed to show the Battle of Stirling BRIDGE, without the bridge. But seriously, it was a very well-executed ambush. And the English were foolish here as well. The story of Wallace allegedly making a sword belt out of Hugh Cressingham’s skin is knarly.
@RustyBoysGaming They did a shit job of portraying him as well, since he was in fact a minor noble and a giant, who didn't sleep with Princess Isabella, not least as she would have been a child at that time. And he didn't wear a kilt either, as the Scots only wore them much later. In fact many of the events in the film didn't take place.
@RustyBoysGaming It wasn't even about William Wallace. Pretty much everything that happens besides the main historical setting is pure fiction... Including Wallace having impregnated Princess Isabelle...
@RustyBoysGaming That's not "minor room" it's blatant fiction. The movie literally starts with a narration saying "Some people would call me a liar" or something to that effect.

As a Scot who loves history I love this. Thank you Historymarche. The genius of Wallace using the bridge to negate the English armies greater numbers. Letting a part of army cross then attacking and the only line of retreat being across the same bridge. Scottish History is complicated.
@@markjoyous3525 I do believe us English were over confident, relaxed on tactics due to being arrogant on the fact we did believe we had better quality men at arms and knights would be a breeze through the Scottish ranks but did we little know that the genius William Wallace would out wit us, out smart us and make us route in defeat in his own back yard. William Wallace is still the face of the Scottish Independence, he died for the independence of his country and of his home, only the bravest of men in history are always remembered when inspiring, brave, charismatic, articulate and intelligent… William Wallace is all them things.
There's a 'History of Scotland' episode by Neil Oliver where he mentions the fact that Wallace fashioned the scabbard for his sword out of the skin of the english bishop he caught and flayed alive. People also have to bear in mind that Wishart's strategy was to use Wallace's guerilla warfare tactics buy enough time for him to find a capable Scottish nobleman for the country to unite around and eventually drive out the english in their war of independence. Wallace's hit and run tactics did exactly that though Wallace didn't live to see the day Robert Bruce gain Scotland it's indepedence.
It was Hugh de Cressingham, the English High Treasurer in Scotland. Allegedly he was such a douche even the other English leaders didn’t like him much.
He probably would have hated it as the Bruce family was quite unpopular when Wallace was alive due to the fact that they spent a lot of time on the English side.
I really wish more people would acknowledge the part the other protector Andrew Murray played in the rebellions. He led an amazing campaign in the North while Wallace led one in the South. Murray was also likely a major player in the planning of Stirling as he was a combat tested leader
You're right. Wallace's strategy, or complete lack of it, at Falkirk strongly suggests that Andrew Murray was the brains behind the victory at Stirling.
@@therightarmofthefreeworld4703 There was not a complete lack of strategy at Falkirk, the schiltroms were effective against cavalry but the nobles fleeing and English archers did them in
The idea that Wallace had no battle leadership training, seems to be at odds at all the coincidences that got him there, and the choice for the battlesite. It's hard to know, there is not good documentation, but if that's true, then perhaps Murray was the hero at Stirling Bridge, for planning it. Or perhaps someone else is not getting enough credit. What was exploited, was the English's desire to be war hero's, and they put themselves across the bridge first. Cressingham died. They thought they were going to win, Cressingham even released some of the troops, so, they would not be paid. That was a huge miscalculation. Cressingham also thought the Scotts would wait until they all crossed the river Forth, which was a weird assumption, when Wallace was clearly not following by his rules to date. And Cressingham put his own troops thru a chokepoint.
@normbograham As probably a minor noble/knight he would definitely have had some training, but Andrew Murray had experience in actual combat and had lead troops with his father at Dunbar. The main reason I give credit to Murray is that after his death it was downhill from there.
I agree with this! I’m currently working on a TH-cam episode looking into the life of Andrew De Moray, should be released in a few weeks 🏴🏴🏴
