  • With the first video online about the Garmin MARQ-Collection since 14.03.2019 ( • GARMIN MARQ - talking ... ) and the interview I conducted with Brad Trenkle, Garmin VP Outdoors, I started a new section on the WatchAdvisor TH-cam channel.
    It’s about connected watches.
    The first collection of connected watches I can present you a hands-on-video are the five new ones from Garmin belonging to the MARQ collection.
    GARMIN MARQ “Driver” (2500 Euro including 19 % VAT)
    GARMIN MARQ “Aviator” (1950 Euro including 19 % VAT)
    GARMIN MARQ “Captain” (1850 Euro including 19 % VAT)
    GARMIN MARQ “Expedition” (1750 Euro including 19 % VAT)
    GARMIN MARQ “Athlete” (1500 Euro including 19 % VAT)
    Garmin launched itself in a segment of very stylish, high-tech connected watches with an own operating system, compatible with Android and iOS, with a lot of smart functions and a battery life up to 12 days in smart mode (28 hours in GPS sport-mode and 48 hours in ultra trac modus.)
    You must know, that a Garmin MARQ is much more than just another fancy tool watch. In fact the next generation of tool-watches. The five Garmin MARQ watches are in terms of design and material used a huge step forward for the company.
    In my opinion Garmin has defined a completely new luxurious segment of connected watches. There is a model representing each of the five main pillars of Garmin and they have one big asset in common: The absolute best available GPS-technology.
    Please let me know what you think about the Garmin MARQ watches!

    Cool watches. If they stay under $500, they will sell and I will probably buy one. They won't replace my collection, they will add to it. I just like the physical/mechanical features of my "mechanical" watches... they have a more artistic feel to them than digital. I hate carrying around a phone... if my watch could connect to 4G on its own, then I would ditch my phone.

    Many no doubt would love having a watch that's specific functions native to that watch. However, for $1500-2000 ( a huge amount of money) I would want a watch that can do all those things - especially considering that 'most' of the functions are just electronic. Sure they can fit most of the functions into the same watch? I think Garmin have just woken up to the fact that there are lots of people who will buy something specific if offered on the market. Even if Garmin can't fit all functions into each watch, (due to some memory or hardware issue) surely they can make it so you can just download the function you need on the day, either, sailing/boating, motor sports, trekking, etc. These watches seem like a good way to rip people off considering they will date extremely quickly and be obsolete within 2 years. I agree that people want watches that look different, So TAG' idea of being able to change pieces of the watch about is cool. Garmin should incorporate more of that into a single watch that can do everything.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand that you would like to buy a kind of "can do everything" watch! Reality is that GARMIN will not offer you/us such a watch. GARMIN just opened up the segment of targeted tool-watches. This is a segment that did not exist before. Garmin therefore wants to sell all kind of watches. Already the cases/straps differ a lot, so everything is meant to be different and not a "can do everything" watch...

    • @gbsailing9436
      @gbsailing9436 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WatchAdvisorI think you missed my point. They could easily make such a watch. There is no way a sailor who also runs and swims, cycles and treks is going to buy a watch for each and every sport that like...NOT AT THAT price point. Fuck that would be $10K's worth of watches right there. Who can afford to do that. So very quickly people are going to realise that Garmin is just out to rip off those who seek the latest and greatest (which it isn't). Garmin would do better to make. watch that everybody would want and then you just sync it with your computer for the function/s you need that day or for that sporting event you are attending. As you said they are not going to do that. But I think it will back fire on them long term, and we will eventually see an around watch released years from now. And changing a band doesn't constitute real diversity of watch style.

      GB Sailing welcome to the world of exclusive watches. In that world, it’s completely normal to have many watches for different occasions. That’s part of the fun. I’d assume the typical buyer already has some automatic watches, which he would wear for business and events, and seeks to add a few of these for leisure times.

    • @efficientminds4229
      @efficientminds4229 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Similar to what @HeadPack said, I imagine anyone who has a race car, a boat, and an airplane probably has enough money to just buy the entire MARQ collection. If that wealthy individual happens to be doing all five activities in the same day (more power to them, I don't have that energy), they probably can afford a nice case to carry them all as well.
      Do-everything is probably more sutied to the standard Fenix 5/5X/+/6 etc. models. The MARQ is for a different (and let's just say it, more affluent) market.

    Thank you for making a detailed review of these time pieces. I'm glad to see Garmin trying to find a way to appeal to people who want a more refined time-piece but also want to take advantage of new technology.
    I had a few questions though... Do you find it a little out of place that these sport watches make only visual use of the bezel? Wouldn't it be much more helpful if the bezel performed some function for GMT (on the expedition/aviator) or timing bezel (for the captain). They've avoided integrating touch display like Android wear or iWatch because it wastes power, but the bezel is a natural input/selection mechanism. So far only Samsung has taken advantage of the bezel for Smartwatch, but their OS is not low-power for long-term use.
    Second, do you feel that the fit and finish is professional enough to justify the price? They advertise these as having domed sapphire, but the close-up pictures don't appear to show an outer dome. Is that on the inside of the crystal?
    Finally, these show that the straps fit wrists with 135mm - 213mm circumference. Does the 46mm really fit better than the 47mm fenix for the same wrist sizes? I have an 170mm wrist and the 47mm really is quite a bit too large!
    Thanks!

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your feedback and thank you for sharing your thoughts with us...
      Concerning the bezel I suppose Garmin did not use it for watertightness / dust-proof reasons. Every aperture causes problems and these watches are meant to be for outdoor activities...
      Concerning the domes sapphire I have to admit I did not notify this as being a quality feature. The entire case including the sapphire looks and feels good ... I will have to check again next time when I have a MARQ in my hands...
      This last question is impossible to answer in theory... You will definitively have to try the MARQ (as with any other watch) on your wrist and make up your own opinion...

    Agree with what was said about the top range smart watches like Tag Heuer where they don't really offer anything different other that a watch that runs on Android OS where garmin does. I've had the garmin since Fenix 2 came out and have tried so many different smart/fitness watches, but found no fitness watch comes close to garmin fenix series. Ordered the Garmin Marq Expedition and will hopefully arrive on the 17th. I know the watch won't keep its value as it would with a Rolex, Tag Heuer, but i know it will last much longer than a £1600 android/apple phone. So i would rather spend that on a garmin watch than a phone

      Rodrigue, it is a quartz watch and so the seconds hand jumps from one second to the other. Apple smoothens these seconds-jump and makes the seconds hand swipe continuously (smoothly) over dial and so it looks more like a mechanical watch...

    The Garmin Fenix 5 is an incredible watch, I use it for hiking, mountain biking, trail running, etc, but after I finish my activity, I switch to a mechanical watch (Breitling, Rolex, others). So, I do not see the need to have upscale smartwatches that, A) is going to be abused and get scratched, B) that is going to be obsolete in 2-3 years. I have all the Fenix series (Fenix, Fenix 2, Fenix 3) in my closet, and currently the 5, but can not see me upgrading to a flashy MARQ watch. Guess Garmin is going for the TAG Heuer, Montblanc costumers, good luck.

    Hello Mr. Linz, I'm really sorry but for me the missing element of Garmin watches is ETERNITY. They may live long but they can't compete with mechanical pieces and they miss this attitude that is absolutely necessary for building a luxury watch. So, for me they are luxury but not luxury watches. Maybe in the future they will produce a piece that is mechanical but shows the time in a digital way. Like so many others did! These watches remind me of a Breitling Emergency. Even in full gold this watch was "gone" in a period like ten years because of it's digital core. Thank you! Your fan from Berlin, Bruno Schoelkopf. I don’t believe the Watch is based on an Android system. It runs through Garmin Connect, which can be used on Android or IOS. I have a mid-level Garmin Watch(Vivoactive 3). I am unclear how many current Garmin owners would pay up for these watches. Most who want all the sports features will get the Fenix 5 Plus at half the price. I think they should have done more to differentiate from the 5 Plus(better screen resolution, new and better optical heart rate monitor, etc...). This has the same resolution and OHR as my Vivoactive 3. Perhaps this will bring new owners into the Garmin world and that would be great. For me, at that price level, I have my eye on the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 80th anniversary edition...

So the more light there is, the better you read the dial and when it gets dark it will be lit from underneath... The price? Yes, Garmin dares! Time will show if the brand can sell at this level and if there are customers willing to put an extra amount of money to get a MARQ. One little advice: You should consider Swatch Group brands as Certina, Hamilton, Longines, Mido, Rado and Tissot as well... They offer a much better quality-price-ratio than Oris...

      WatchAdvisor I thought I heard you say that towards the end of the video, but perhaps I was mistaken. The screen technology is fine, but I think they should have done things to differentiate more by boosting resolution. I will check out those other brands as well. Thanks for the suggestions.

    I do not deny that they may even be useful (for some), but will never replace the "connectivity" between the skin and a mechanical movement. Do not advise anyone to cross a desert or mountain with only one of these garmim, suunto or any other, is that they will BE lost for sure!

      These connected watches are meant to be for those who come home at night and/or have a charging devise handy by purpose ... I fully agree with you: A good "old" mechanical tool watch can not be replaced by anything else!

      we can not refuse progress, and certainly in the near future, these satellite navigation watches will be effective / accurate, but they still have their utility! And, they can save lives (hiking, mountaineering, etc.)! at the moment, it is only military personnel who have (not all) precision equipment, so small that they can be used on the wrist, it will surely reach the consumer market soon. Even because manufacturers want it too.

      André These digital tool watches will boom in the next years. I’d rather call them consumer electronics for the wrist...

      @@WatchAdvisor No one can stop technological progress! And that's good. For example. this watch only works with all three satellite navigation devices! The American, the Russian and the European. I compare these watches to the
      portable phones, in the 80's they did not work very well. BUT, this technological advance also benefited the "traditional" so beloved mechanical watch.

      André Miniaturization will also help to further develop these watches very quickly... The mechanical wristwatch therefore clearly must be positioned as an antidote to the smart and connected watches.

    bad demonstrations! None of the views from the screens of the watches wasn't to be looking at.

      Peter Trier That was the best we could in Basel. I know the shots of the watches aren’t the best, but time was short and the settings in which we had to film by far not ideal... Therefore I apologize. These were some of the first working samples available at that time for me. I will come back with more insights of MARQ during the year and we will film those dials properly...
