I agree with this 100%. It's like a piece of it's soul is missing. I feel like the dread is not there. It feels too cinematic and inauthentic in some way. Everything feels like a set piece but the original feels like you are really there. Like it's a real place or a real experience.

I know this has nothing to do with SH2 Remake - but I just wanna hug you, dude. As someone who's been spiraling since the beginning of the year, I feel you. I swear to God, this year has been the worst year of my life. I got scammed, I lost my pet rabbit that I've had since I was 17 years old, I got denied life saving surgery, and an orange peel got elected as president. The rest of the world also seems to be going to shit, and it's hard to see what's happening in Gaza without knowing how to help. My partner's mental health is also dwindling, and despite my degree in psychology I feel useless.

first of all i want to say i know what its like to be in a mental health hole. the past year has been hell for me, i felt you shared a lot of personal stuff so ill share my shit; im a single father. my baby mama died of fentanyl poisoning a year ago and ive been living with my mom since. im still finding it hard to get my shit together at all. things do get better, easier to deal with, sometimes it just takes some time. sometimes more time than you'd wish but theres people out there that dp care and you just gotta spot them and dont let the people who touch you just be a stranger; everyone going thru shit. second, im a sh2 super fan and you remembered all the lore and moments perfectly. james did only do the whole thing twice, jump four times but paced better. this game does have a pacing and padding and player security issue and u nailed all my grievances perfectly . . set pieces were beautiful, sometimes expanding the sets of sh2 was awesome and novel, other times felt too fanservicy; its too bad because the game as a whole is just so good but im afraid new SH fans arent going to get the art house experimental esoteric nature that is silent hill because of this remake. its lacking, but its also so good. its faustian and i loved this video. hope u feel better soon dude... this video helped me because it put into words things i noticed bout the remake i just felt but couldnt explain... good cuff man

i haven't played the remake but i absolutely agree. im unfortunately wholly uninterested in playing it bc the vibes being AAA annihilates the "otherworldly" vibe for me. maybe im an outlier seeing as i think SH1 is the visual peak of the series, but SH2 and SH3 strike such a good balance of real and fake/obscured/uncanny that I think remaking them in this way just destroys the atmosphere they rely so hard on.
id bet that the new version gets big thumbs-up with respect to Team Silent's original vision, and they would have done something similar if they could have back then. but idk, the art lives its life separate from the artist, or some more eloquent and concise artist vs art saying. give me shit graphics and weird audio or give me death

The only remake that can be superior to Sh2 would ve a 1:1 copy with enhanced graphics or sounds otherwise this might as well be called another name because is a completely new experience
The focus on combat and the camera forced to be always im the back shoulder just takes away from the experience too much, Silent hill was never about combat but athmosphere and map traversal with puzzle and action.
Another problem is the remake doesnt know how to create tension by using silence like the OG did

9:32 I think people have to get rid of this idea that remakes are "replacements" of the original, it's one of the stupidest things I hear people repeat a lot. Obviously I haven't played every game franchise out there, so I'm going to speak from my own experience. For me RE1 remake is the best remake of REmakes, and also one of the best remakes outside of RE. It's a remake that really respects the original game in almost everything, and I can understand why there are people who call it "the definitive version" of RE1. Although I love RE1 remake, I couldn't say that it is a replacement for the original, because that original game will always have a different vibe than the remake.
I think that the case of SH2 remake is more similar to RE2 remake, although RE2 remake respects a lot the locations of the original game, in history and gameplay it is a very different game from the original (especially if you take into account the content cut from RE2 remake).
I agree that the fact that you have a dodge button, enemies can dodge, quick time events, etc; It's just stupid, it's not SH2 at all. even RE2 remake doesn't have a dodge button.
14:49 I hadn't realized that if you move the enemies too far from their position they return to their standard position like in dark souls (just an example), I want to die.
you said this game feels like a AAA game, well not that I'm an expert, but I assume it's a AAA game. I highly doubt that an AA game can look so good graphically and have decent animations that don't feel so robotic. That the game is so modernized, well as much as I hate it, the younger generations are not going to buy it if it is not like all the examples you gave 15:31.
16:52 The story seems like an insult to the original game to me. The dialogues may be very similar or the same as the original, but going and writing the same dialogues does not make them feel the same, especially if you start to compare the cinematics and voice actors between both games. The example you gave of the pyramid head chase is one of many examples of how to ruin tense moments, or emotions from the original game. Why in gameplay Maria is in front of you all the time, but in the cinematic she appears behind James? lmao this game is a shame.
The fact that the game looks like REmakes, well it's obvious, they didn't even try to hide it. Now the melee combat is like TLOU, 3rd person camera and Leon's hairstyle for James? whyyyyyy? It doesn't make any sense.
17:49 Sorry for bringing this up so much, but why do all bosses now have a second phase? the bosses with second phases and the dodge button, I can only think that SH2 remake plays like a soulslike, I'm sorry.
19:23 what am I seeing??? omggggg
22:58 I don't think you're the only one, but clearly you are/we are in the minority. Many times in the video you said that it felt like a AAA game, it's not that it feels like a AAA game, it is a AAA game. I believe that the soul of a game will always be lost in a remake. Obviously almost all the focus goes to the graphics section, the gameplay has to be a 3rd person shooter with over-the-shoulder camera, the protagonist has to talk to himself when you are playing for no reason, etc. When making a remake 90% of the time they sacrifice the artistic side for more realistic graphics, which affects the personality of the game, whether you like it or not. "The modern gaming world isn't going to be quiet until every PS2 game backwards is a 3rd person, over-the-shoulder camera game, with all the additions of a modern game, like the 'yellow paint', just to give an example" or "you took something unique and transformed it into something like everything else" the phrases are not mine but they are too true.
P.S : These are videos that I think are very good since they try to be quite objective with SH2 remake and cover a lot of all aspects of both games. This is just a recommendation, so that no one takes it as if I am detracting from the video.

this oughtta be the first and only "negative" review that sounds honest. I know it's not a negative review, you said numerous times that you did enjoy the game and think it is a good game in general. But I see where you're coming from, when you point out the negative bits. I do not agree, that is, I do not think they are negative necessarily. To me, an original Silent Hill 2 from back in 2001, this game is a materpiece. Silent hill 2 (the original) was, and probably still is, my favourite game of all time. It is hard for me to say that the original is better, beucase I feel the remake is really its spiritual successor and they are together just one game. To me, it did bring back the memories, the feelings and I hade a great time traversing the town and buildings. The story was developed MUCH BETTER than the original, beucase, I am sorry, but the voice actors and dialogs in the original were bull. The remake did a much better job developing the characters. I agree on the "manequinn" part but I still don't see it as a negative thing. I, the player, along with James, am supposed to adapt to the changes, right? So figuring enemies out and predictiing where they could be is not a negative thing - it's adapting to the setting. I count this as a nice thing. The only obvious minus tome is the development of Maria. She's the supporting role and she just faded. The whole time. I don't know why. But she was forced as an "important" character. Angela, on the other hand - wow. I do hope we get an original angela dlc with a whole different gameplay. That would be lit. No pun intended.

I legitimately wish Bluepoint or Nightdive Studios were contracted to make the Remake(or a proper Remaster from the later company). At least then there would have been a perfectly updated version of the game that didn't try to alter what made the OG so beloved and influential. I don't hate Bloober, but I really am not a fan of the changes made in the remake. They removed stuff that didn't need to be removed, good lines of dialogue and cutscenes. They added stuff that took away from the tight pacing. And the camera made a lot of the combat more annoying than fun and engaging. The original was designed around multiple replays, this one almost makes it feel like a chore for me.
It's also really odd how the "90's filter" in the options menu doesn't at all represent what the game originally looked like. There's still no film grain (which is what helped give the first 4 games their unique aesthetic)and the original game didn't even come out in the 90s so I don't know why they chose to put it in the game to begin with.
It's also rather frustrating seeing so many people come into the series for the first time with the remake, then attributing and praising the story of SH2 (OG) to Bloober Team. Ignoring Team Silent as it's creators altogether.
