Hi everyone! Long time no see! This video marks my return to semi-regular TH-cam content! Although I can't guarantee a weekly or consistent upload schedule, I can guarantee that more content is on it's way. I'm currently in a much better position to work on videos than I was in the last year or so, and I don't have any plans to go on another long hiatuses in the near future. In addition to stand-alone videos like this one, I am continuing to work on my History of the TF2 economy video, as well as improving my editing/production techniques to increase the quality of future videos. If you are big fan of the channel, there is a lot to look forward to. I also want to take this time to plug my discord server. Right now we are hosting our annual trading meme contest, with a prize pool of over 15 keys! Thus, if you want to make spicy memes and win TF2 keys for trading, consider joining in on the fun :) Server Link: discord.com/invite/Twb8SKY
Thanks man! I love that you are always one of the first people to watch my videos :) I've grown up playing Magic so old Halloween effects always draw a comparison in my mind to Magic's Reserved List cards.
Eh, i still remember my signature hat being Demonflame Bombing Run. Yeah i know, that hat is ugly, but i loved it with all my heart. Tried to locate it back i quickly found out that all 3 copies are now dispersed around collector's backpacks, making this unusual unobtainable for me. Thanks for the vid and for some kind of nostalgia :)
I went shopping for an unusual a few weeks ago and noticed just how much higher the prices got. I used to own a knifestorm tyrants helm, and I had trouble selling it for 150. Now someone's asking over 1000. Shits nuts.
I used to have a bonzo spook specs in 2016 but sold it once I stopped playing this game. When I purchased it for $100 and now seeing it sell for over a thousand is soul crushing
As someone that had the largest unusual collection of stainless pots (owning mist of the halloweens) the price increases have allowed me to obtain my dream hat, the darkblaze crones dome when I cashed out last christmas.
I'm really glad that first gen has lost some of it's hype. My signature unusual is my Green Energy Killer Exclusive. It was my dream unusual from the very start, and I finally got it last year for only 160 keys! I love depreciation, haha. Used to be like, 700 keys or something ridiculous like that.
That's pretty awesome to hear actually. With everyone complaining about expensive Halloweens makes you fail to realize how the current trends can work in other's favor!
Quite informative and highly accurate, when I was looking for a new unusual I wanted to grind to one hat that caught my attention, and that was the human cannonball and my favorite unusuals were those with purple dark color themes. One effect I was eyeballing was amarithine (the purple monster cloud effect) but at the time my budget wasn't to big and the cheapest one was selling at 200 keys, so I purchased a neutron star variant of the cannonball and a team spirit maxs head as a compromise (50 keys in total). A year later I had saved up enough keys to buy a new human cannonball but when I checked the price for the amarithine effect almost all hats skyrocketed in price to the point where an all class variant was more than a 1000 keys. And the nebula hat I purchased a year ago nearly tripled in price. Great work in the video as well Virtual Economist, always a treat seeing you upload!
I know my unusual isn't anything high value compared to the other comments but today I just snagged a spooky head bouncers unusual with the frantic spooker effect! There is around 30 copies of them right now and I'm really happy with it. Even if it isn't anything big like everyone else, but I do say my pyro has never looked snazzier
Once owned an Arcana a rather festive tree, sold it for like 200 keys or something in 2017 or 2018 because my PC needed an full-scale upgrade. Will miss the old times.
Happy to see you're back! Great stuff 👍 Have you ever considered making a vid on the sheer amount of items in TF2 that are inventory "trapped" or being hoarded? I'd be really interested in knowing the percent of traders who stockpile certain niche items which makes them basically null to lower/mid-tier traders or loadout enthusiasts. Mainly things like dead/inactive inventories (like you mentioned), spell hoarders that scrape the potential market clean, warpaint poachers who make specific combos near impossible to obtain, or those who try to own every permutation of a certain unusual hat. Mainly focusing on the individuals who corner a niche and make the potential market growth a dead end due to the lack of liquidity these items have. Thought it might be an interesting topic to explore, especially with spells and warpaints since they are the most extreme cases in TF2 of this where collectors have been known to shark until they basically control the market for these specific items singlehandedly.
I've amassed quite the collection of Halloween unusuals over the years and I'm always surprised with how much they keep on increasing over the years. 12 year old me would have never guessed that these items would have exploded in value.
the price on the current halloween ones definitely burst and im very happy about it, i sold my first unusual (molten eyes all--gnawing) early on while it was high and just picked up a pumpkin moon head bouncers, which personally is a god tier effect for me, for just £120 which is nothing compared to them being put up for 250+keys just a couple months ago!
Whenever I watch a new video from Ben I always imagine myself unboxing an insanely rare 1of1 unusual that could be worth thousands of keys. That would be a madness.
Thank you for talking about this, I was worried too when this would happen bless anyone that wasted valuable money on these hats and is worried when it’s time will come to an end…
I currently own the only double spelled trophy belt with stormy 13th hour, you will not believe how many times people ask if I'd sell it. This hat has been with me for 3 years as of now, and it's my signature for sniper.
This is a very well written and well produced video, man. Good job. I can really see the attention to detail, your influences as a creator (perhaps you watch Lemino? Or someone similar?), and your own person flare. One of the only tf2 creators doing it like this right now. Kudos.
Thank you for the kind words man! Reading comments like this make my day. I've never heard of Lemmino until now, but I can already tell I'm going to be hooked on his videos! For what it's worth, most of my inspiration for this video (and the previous one) were from binging Uncle Dane videos haha.
That shits never going down in price, unless valve has them redrop again. I would love to have old stuff come back but with the direction TF2 has taken something like the spells coming back or old unusual effects and crates is never going to happen.
I used to be a trader but I cashed out and kept my one hat that remained close to my heart, it wasn’t expensive or extremely flashy, it was my Brain Drain Brain Warming Wear. I kept it because I loved the effect brain drain even though it wasn’t too sought after and “Brain Drain Brain Warming Wear” is just really fun to say. Man now I want to get back into trading but I traded back in 2018 and the markets changed :(
yo that's awesome! Just be sure if you ever want to sell it to do your research before accepting any offers. Some people might reach out to you and make some pretty tempting ones, but there is a good chance you can get more than even that.
I have a 1/1 Strange Chiropetra Venetata Prehistoric Pullover that I unboxed myself the one Scream Fortress that was possible, and offers on it have gone from 500 key hats to 800 pure. I don't really use it, but everyone that offers on it is a collector, and I don't want it to just disappear into an inventory.
@@pixelpusher2219 It's less "due dilligence" and more "This hat's really fucking cool and it's strange so knowing someone's not gunna get it up to Mannceaux Signature through dedication and love for it pisses me off"
I think this is also happening to good robo effects. I remember getting my signature hat, a time warp noble nickel, about a year ago for 75 keys, but now the lowest sell order for a time warp hat is at 80 keys.
People say if valve add old halloween effects back prices will crash and everyone will have a unusualnold halloween effect killing the richest players but the reality is that they gonna be the same fucking price but now available in actual GOOD HATS Except for elf demoman hat that shit is gonna have bonzo for 9 keys but yet no one will fucking want it lmao
The same 5-10 people who hoard these expensive halloween hats inter-trade with each other and inflate their prices. Once these guys decide to cash out, then the prices will bomb. Until then, enjoy never being able to buy one of these hats unless you meet their ludicrous prices.
1/1 Knifestorm Larrikan Robin. I knew I needed a knifestorm hat the very first time I saw one on a demo in DeGroot keep. I somehow got very lucky unboxing one halloween, sold all the unusuals I got and had enough to buy the Robin cheap off of steam marketplace (I have no idea how it wasn't bought immediately). Since then I get people adding me every week or so wanting to buy it... the last offer was 400 keys.

But since those cases and crates have been discontinued every got crazy over time. The cat misc used to be pretty reasonable, now its around 100 keys.
My personal signature hat is a Strange Kill-a-Watt Crones Dome. I was a huge tf2ber nerd as a kid and it's closest thing I could get to Muselk's old pointy hat in unusual form without breaking the bank. Absolutely adore it, even if the effect isn't technically the greatest.
I was like 13 years old when I traded in tf2 frequently enough to have gotten some crazy halloween unusuals, spellbound furious is the one hat I think about all the time because I had a $750 item without even knowing it at the time and probably sold it for something not even worth 1/5 of that ;(
They should have just done the same thing as back in the day, where you had like a 1/6 chance to unbox an unusual with one of the previous year's effects, that way you still get new old halloween unusuals
It's astounding to watch the change of price still occurring. I would consider myself lucky to own the only It's a Secret to Everybody Safe 'n Sound prior to the increase. Odds are if this happened years ago I wouldn't own this hat now.
Great video! It would've been nice to mention old Halloween MISCS too, since those have exploded in price even harder and since old miscs as a whole seemingly are no longer unboxable as unusuals, do you think old halloween effect unusual miscs would keep their current value even if Valve did introduce a new batch of the old halloween effects? Also worth noting that the old halloween effects don't only look good, but effects like the flaming bats and demonic portals work excellently when paired up with other unusuals. I know it's not a big deal but would've been cool to have a small section of a video like this dedicated to explaining more about those holy grails :)
Its funny that back in the day when these effects were new, Traders disliked them and people NEVER though that they would be this expensive in the future, They were pretty cheap
Honestly I think having a "signature" unusual is a bit difficult, because it'd require you to either find the 9 main hats you use for each class with that specific effect, or get an all-class hat with that effect and have to change up your loudouts
yeah, I've had a stormy 13th, knifestorm and a all-class harvest moon, arcana. seeing them sell for nearly 4x the price when people told me they ain't worth shit a few years ago hurts me and really made me dispise high tier traders who own the said hats that they said are worthless. haha I'm a little salty ofc
