@@ev6558 not necessarily. it could just be that it is the first stable unit that they have which is why they didnt have stuff available in converted stables before. the devs may have added the unit for the campaigns while not realizing that it would also appear in the stable in real games.

That what I think as well. Seems to be a bit too functional for something that was supposed to be a "mistake". And it does seem perfectly balanced anyway. It's a Knight without most of the good cavalry upgrades since attack upgrades are mostly late game and the defensive upgrades are the first ones you get during mid game.
It's also meme-tier difficult to acquire the stables for it in a 1v1. Even if you manage to somehow get 1 or 2 you won't get massive waves of them out either. Even in a team game why would you have your Meso-american allies making bootleg Knights when you can just have a team mate with actual Knights and upgrades for them making them while they compliment them with their actual signature units like Eagles/Jaguars/Mayan Archers

About the name: Xolotl means 'monster' in Nahuatl, language for the Aztecs and others Prehispanic cultures in Mexico. When Aztecs encountered Spanish conquistadores and their cavarly, that new animal was taken as some kind of monster, a mix between a deer and a javelina. That's why the called this new unit as Xolotl. Also, that pronunciation is correct: The X as in Chocolate and the TL as in Atlanta.
Keep your hard work, dude. I love your videos and I love watching them, even though I don't play AoE anymore, it's just nice how you explain these things.

This is a great new edition!
They remind me of Civilization 4's graphics for mesoamerican knights. In that game the only thing stopping you from making standard versions of each unit is resource acquisition, so if you have horses and iron, you can make knights even as aztec/mayan/incan. So you get this somewhat anachronistic mesoamerican warrior with an animal helmet wielding a macuahuitl on horseback. I always thought they looked cool, and was sad that future civ games removed unique cultural appearances for non-unique units.

In the first version of Red Alert you could already make the opponents units and other things when taking over their buildings. I think it's a fun idea. It would mean you could gain acces to additional armor when converting a blacksmith. In Red Alert it was possible to build your enemy's structures too if you could take over a main building. I AOE it would translate to being able to build enemy buildings when converting enemy villagers.

The speed bonus for military buildings not applying to converted stables is working as intended. The converted building is still the old one.
But that means it also keeps its former boni, thus if you convert a Hun's Stable, they'll be working 20% faster!
The same is true for its HP if you get a Byzantine one as well (though that is more obvious).

Actually having this little gimmick be expanded upon would be a nice buff for monks in general, since they are a very udnerused unit. I wouldn't even complain if the unit you get from converted buildings was way stronger than regular (like the campaign version instead of what we actually got). This would give players a real motivation to go for such tactics and to expect them from others, since there's a big reward waiting for you at the end.

This is actually a game changer!
Imagine player A being castle age monk rush by player B who is using a Mesoamerican civ. Previously, player A can safely stack light cav at the stable for a counter attack. Even if the stable gets converted, there are no consequences because the stable gives no strategic value to player B.
Now, they would have to think twice when they hear wololo at their stable, or they risk facing one of the most powerful unit in castle age.
Considering that Aztec and Incas are both good at monk rush, this is definitely a buff.

I wish they'd do more with the building conversion mechanic. I think It would be awesome if when you convert a building, you can make any unit your opponent can make from that building, you could even up the stakes by making it so you get all the upgrades that the opponent has already gotten. (But only on units made in the converted building)

Happy accidents is right! Some of the funnest and most competitive mechanics in video games have been bugs and side effects that were never initially intended, but end up being balanced in their own context with regards to the game! All while making the game funner and more popular for it's unique mechanics as well!
    Some notable examples being:
-K style and animation "abuse" in GunZ: The Duel
-Disjointing projectiles and stacking camps in DotA 1 (transferred into DotA 2)
-Creeping camps in various ways that were not fully intended or foreseen in Warcraft 3 like Ancient of War creeping for Night Elves.
    -Combos in fighting games!

Following your theory about converting mesoamerican barracks and getting eagles, you could say you could also get a technology your civ doesn't have by converting an enemy's University, Blacksmith or other buildings with technologies your civ doesn't have.

  • @AndrewTheFrank
    @AndrewTheFrank 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I like the idea of getting civ locked units by converting buildings because it makes building forward buildings a risk. That would means not only could a meso get cav from an enemy stable, but maybe eagles from a meso barracks or elephants from indo china/india civ stable. maybe even steppe lancer from a steppe civ stable.
It is not only not that uncommon to see forward production buildings but also forward raiding buildings. This now becomes a possible liability vs a redemption civ.

You don’t necessarily have to go all the way to the enemy’s base. If they build forward stables, it would probably be easier to convert those, though you don’t get the benefit of having units popping out right in their base.

American civs get Xolotl because they get Horses from stables, they learn how to breed and train them. Xolotls are just jaguar wariors on horses. I think they schould get some special abbilities and stats. It would be great. Other civs can't get JW from american civs because they can't train their soldiers to be like jaguars.
Also, i think that inf upgrades should apply to Xolotl because of what i've already said. They are jaguars on horses.
