Ichiro's answers in Japanese are so so much deeper and insightful compared to the translation (with all due respect to his translator). I totally understand why he wants to explain his feelings in his native language.
Absolutely. English and Japanese are both notoriously difficult languages to master, and I'm pretty sure that is the only similarity they share besides a few loan words. Either way...salut, slainte, cheers, salud, prost, skol, KANPAI!
Maybe so, but for those of us who don't speak Japanese, this still comes across as a good interview. The fan would be better served if all non-fluent English speaking players had this type of edited translated audio overlay done by the media outlets, rather than just the usual live recorded interviews with typical generic sound-bites. Incidentally, I'm not sure if you might know, but why does Japan overall rank so poorly in their English speaking skills as compared to all of their neighboring nations of the Far East?
@ There are many factors such as starting English late in school (until recently), emphasis on passing English exams instead of practical use, a lot of rote learning, etc. Source: I’m an English teacher in Japan for almost 20 years
Cant wait for his speech. I loved how he talked about not being especially talented but just working on his game little by little, being better a little bit every day. Awesome. ❤
I've been an A's fan my entire life, it was hard to not be a fan of Suzuki. It was so much fun to watch him in person and I'm very fortunate and lucky enough to see him play live. Well deserved, such an amazing role model for younger generations to come. Congrats Ichiro and thank you for all the great memories.
the game needs ichiro back as a hitting coach, youth developer, or even a manager. the game would be so much more fun if we had a few more people playing akin to ichiro
If you ever go to spring training, go to the Mariners complex in Peoria in the morning. Ichiro is always there, and you can watch him shag flyballs and work out with the players. He’s amazing to watch that close up.
I think we can all respect the significant difference between speaking off the cuff in an interview and having months to write and refine a speech in order to help ensure the right words are used.
I read one explanation that seemed even close to justifiable. That whomever didn't vote for Ichiro voted for another player he wanted to keep on the ballot. Still doesn't make it right, but plausible. The only other reason would be that the voter is a jagoff, a blithering idiot, or some combination of blithering idiot and jagoff. The fact that they haven't spoken up about it may be the answer
@@michaelhenehan1809 What’s even more outrageous is that the many players who were better than him got a lower percentage of bits than him. Let’s start there instead of with Ichiro. The ONLY important number is 75%. Everything else is just fans’ egos.
A true all around ballplayer. But his launch angles sucked(sarcasm, ha!). The opposite of the nonsense the game emphasizes now. Guys average more strike outs in a season than Gwynn or Ichiro had in a career. My favorite ballplayer is Mark Grace, another guy who is overlooked because he didn't have big HR power. All he did was lead the 1990s in hits and doubles while playing a + defensive first base. Ichiro, enjoy your new and rightful place on the Mount Olympus of baseball!
Ichiro is one of the grestest players ever, one of the best hitters defensive player and baserunner, the Goat 🐐
How can anyone not like this man, truly a class act
Excited to hear his HOF speech in English this summer
Great player, even greater man. Humble guy.

It is not easy to translate

@@michaelhenehan1809 english is pretty easy, definitely not near the level as japanese or chinese

Ichiro: The best to ever do it. Respect
Ichiro is going to give one of the funniest and greatest HOF speeches of all time. 🐐
Congratulations, Ichiro! You made Seattle proud.

Ichiro "yes"
One of the goats of the game

Ichiro knows more English than he lets on & Costas knows more Japanese than he shows 🤣

Kansas city in July is like 2 squirrels in f*cking wool sock
August in Kansas City is hotter than two rats in a fucking wool sock
'A Man of Honor'; imagine that concept....
Love ichiro but my biggest takeaway is bob costas looks GOOD for 72 years old. Drop the skin care routine bob
What’s wrong with looking good?
@@ron88303 nothing, he was complementing him . "drop the skincare routine" means - let us know
@ Thanks for explaining. I had misinterpreted the comment.
The one baseball writer that didn’t vote for Ichiro is an idiot and should have the class to explain himself.
The only important number is 75%. Get it and you’re in; don’t get it and you’re not.

There are many Americans who play for Japanese professional baseball leagues but they don’t speak Japanese. No one complains about it in Japan.
Costas probably: can we just really dig into those two years you played for the Yankees?
Philosopher who would play the baseball
oddly enough plenty mariner fans thought he was a selfish leadoff. he cared more about stats than team wins

Ichiro is looking like the guy who serves me at the local takoyaki stand.
Say " Ogenki desi ka?" Next time you see that guy.
I thought he spoke English ? I guess not..
I never knew he did not speak English.
He does speak it, and very well.
@ I never heard it lol
