Certainly a big step-up from one year ago where he was filming in a cluttered basement mid-renovation with half the screen blurred off! I agree the finished office looks great!
My criticism of Apple’s stance on privacy is that it is dependent on the economics of it. I mean if Greg himself says it is a human right is true. So why not force the Apple devices in places like China to have the same private relay service if that is truly human rights? Sure I get the argument that Apple is just following other countries laws and regulations. But Apple made clear it supports privacy even against law enforcement in the USA. Why not in autocratic countries too?
Good episode and tough question at the end. I don't understand why people complain about John not asking questions unrelated to WWDC, that's not the place or time for this. The last question WAS a tough question. The reason I don't have AirPods Pros is demonstrated in this interview by Craig, if your mouth moves they fall out constantly no matter what the tip size. AirPods and AirPods Max for me.
Fascinating. I love how passionate these guys are about their craft. It shows in the quality of their products. The only thing I would want from Apple is a better multi tasking experience on iPadOS with true windowing support, interactive widgets that can play back video or otherwise be interacted with, ability to sort the settings app alphabetically, the ability to create my own categories in the App Library, and better files app. Other than that, keep it up!

I just read your article on the Apple Report Card for 2021. I wanted to add to that. I have the newest Apple TV and two things to point out that you didn’t address. First, HDMI 2.1 is capable of 120Hz but Apple only uses 60Hz. If they maxed this out it would improve smoothness on fast action scenes. 2nd, Chroma 4:4:4 improves clarity, but Apple has this only in SDR. The picture quality would definitely improve in HDR if this was applied. What are your thoughts and do you think they will ever implement these two things?

They’re recording with the iPhone, but not necessarily to the iPhone. They’re very likely using the iPhone as the camera to capture the video but with it plugged into a Mac which is doing the recording, and so able to see themselves on the Mac’s screen as they record. Last year, on either his web site or his podcast, Gruber gave a full description of how they did it. I expect he may do the same this year.

I've watched these each year and love them but I think it's time I finally ask... who is this? How does he have so little subscribers, just one video a year, and is able to get these massive interviews every year? Lmao
are they working on better external monitor support? instead of the display just mirroring the ipad, the ability to customize the display and add widgets. will quick note get a calendar/reminder attachment. will safari understand if im streaming netflix on my computer, then use my phone to look something up on safari, not to sync? will they add to shortcuts to allow us to open one full screen app and can open up others directly in slide-over?
It’s painful to watch. Gruber spends more time talking and explaining himself and his grandiose idea of why he is necessary than asking questions that users care about. I don’t know why this has become a tradition, but it needs to stop; it’s like old Apple friends from back in the day trying to be relevant and reminding us of their bond that no one cares about.
So much of today's discourse is reductive, hostile, and performative. I like that John's Talk Show is nuanced, collegial, and informative. Yes there's some apple shining going on, and a lot of the previous commenters roll their eyes at that. I get it, there's a lot of honey in this tea, but hear me out. Longtime DF readers/listeners know that John will spend paragraphs talking about how un-Appley a given bug/oversight in iOS/macOS is, how he referred to Siri's functionality as "akin to someone with a serious head injury" and so on. He can be critical of oversights, bugs, and unfairness without being hostile about it, and that enables him to continue the conversation with Apple execs long after others would have taken their shot, patted themselves on the back, and never been invited to speak again. I look at the continued conversation he's had over the years, and how he's been granted more and more access to Apple's upper echelon, and I'm grateful for his poise and nuance that allows him year after year to take another swing. Do I wish he hit just a little harder at times, ala Kara Swisher's Tim Cook interview? Of course I do, but it's also obvious that Joz and Craig do take note when DF harps on their oversights, bugs, and missteps, and there's enough mutual respect there that they don't need to dunk on that, but they mention it. That collegial pressure, that admiration mixed with expectation of excellence, is why I keep coming back to these.
John, can you provide more details about how the video was recorded? Which camera on the iPhone12 Pro Max? Which software for capture? How are you doing video switching? Looks like some green screen going on, how was that done?
I’m fairly sure it’s wide angle lens on the iPhone, all video and audio recorded locally and then uploaded, and mixed presumably on Final Cut. No green screens it’s all real backgrounds - it just looks a bit flat because of the limitations of the tiny lens on the phone.
Great interview but I have to disagree with your overly positive stance on iPadOS 15. Whilst the upgrades are amazing, I wish we had native Calculator, and Weather apps and some pro apps that can take advantage of an M1 chip, 2TB Storage, 16GB RAM and USB-C Thunderbolt 4. I am sorry, but I am certain that widgets and App Library could have and should have been included on iPadOS 14 last year!
In Mail in iOS 15 you Could Copy File from Mail to Mail easy or also a TH-cam or news Articale to your Post or Respond in Facebook or Twitter. Also in Safari like 9To5Mac and Tech News.
You're an expert at asking soft questions and just saying how awesome Apple products and services are while you know full well about the big issues / elephants in the room like iPadOS but you don't ask those questions. If you have any kind of respect for yourself, you stop doing those interviews. This video is just an Apple ad on someone else's channel.

The AppStack in iPad and Mac could Move to Another App with Swipe or Mouse to Apps you Choose like in iPhone for Less AppStack because iPad has less Apps. Also in Mac.
damn imagine getting 3 sponsors on 1 video!
CarPlay Will support Lossless Audio and Spetial Sound with A15 and 30% of Car from iPhone with Spetial Sound with A15. Also Tesla will have Safari with NFC. And even News Paper for Pay Monthly like WSJ.
Craig and Joz are in the same location/background as in last years Talk Show video 🤔
Probably their offices.
I've watched these each year and love them but I think it's time I finally ask... who is this? How does he have so little subscribers, just one video a year, and is able to get these massive interviews every year? Lmao
Do a web search for Daring Fireball and read his blog.
Did you use the front camera?
are they working on better external monitor support? instead of the display just mirroring the ipad, the ability to customize the display and add widgets. will quick note get a calendar/reminder attachment. will safari understand if im streaming netflix on my computer, then use my phone to look something up on safari, not to sync? will they add to shortcuts to allow us to open one full screen app and can open up others directly in slide-over?
Well said. Daring Fireball is sometimes critical of Apple but not hateful.
Jos and Craig are sitting on complete opposite sides of the building
Well done!
1:16:50 Jos to Craig: I am hungry.
Is this from the front or back cameras of iPhone Pro? It’s great.
The better one.
Yes from the back cameras. Not front
John, can you provide more details about how the video was recorded? Which camera on the iPhone12 Pro Max? Which software for capture? How are you doing video switching? Looks like some green screen going on, how was that done?
They didn’t use green screen last year and I doubt that’s changed.
I’m fairly sure it’s wide angle lens on the iPhone, all video and audio recorded locally and then uploaded, and mixed presumably on Final Cut. No green screens it’s all real backgrounds - it just looks a bit flat because of the limitations of the tiny lens on the phone.
@@paulwalker2133 I think the same
Looking good John!
From another Post... or A News Articale or TH-cam easy even in Messages. Also in Apps like Telegram and WhatsApp and Orgs Apps for Biz and News. With A Page and Arrow Up. Also in Safari like 9To5Mac and Tech News.
Which app did Gruber use to connect his iPhone to Mac to record?
Bill Atkinson was SO close to owning the internet with HyperCard 😏
You're an expert at asking soft questions and just saying how awesome Apple products and services are while you know full well about the big issues / elephants in the room like iPadOS but you don't ask those questions. If you have any kind of respect for yourself, you stop doing those interviews.
This video is just an Apple ad on someone else's channel.
Again a great demonstration how these AirPod (Pro) don't stay in your ear very well (if you are talking).
