      Generally speaking, yes. In this interview I'm glad he spoke as much as he did. We've heard Craig and Jos speak lots in these itnreviews. Getting down to the nitty gritty details is what I care about and I think this interview worked

      It's not an interview.

      It's a podcast technically. Gruber likes to give context to a question before simply asking something, both for teaching little (history) lessons on the technology for the viewers and for getting more interesting answers.

      @@h4x0y ya I don’t think this is a case of a selfish interviewer at all. He is providing the necessary setup for questions that aren’t cookie cutter copies of what everyone else asks. Calling him out for speaking to much is a blind argument that ignores the context

      I like these interviews but John's questions really are too long for what they're asking, and we don't see enough of the guests' expressions like you said. I feel like John feels like it's his responsibility to give the ENTIRE backstory to his questions, not realizing his guests can explain the backstory as they give their answers.

    John, the reason people ask you if you Apple is approving all the questions in advance, is because people can't reconcile the fact that given the opportunity, these are the actual questions you ask. The entire thing is one giant self-congratulatory back-patting session. No one learns anything new from an hour+ interview, because you don't ask anything that isn't already approved PR speak.

    My criticism of Apple’s stance on privacy is that it is dependent on the economics of it. I mean if Greg himself says it is a human right is true. So why not force the Apple devices in places like China to have the same private relay service if that is truly human rights?
    Sure I get the argument that Apple is just following other countries laws and regulations.
    But Apple made clear it supports privacy even against law enforcement in the USA. Why not in autocratic countries too?

First, HDMI 2.1 is capable of 120Hz but Apple only uses 60Hz. If they maxed this out it would improve smoothness on fast action scenes. 2nd, Chroma 4:4:4 improves clarity, but Apple has this only in SDR. The picture quality would definitely improve in HDR if this was applied. What are your thoughts and do you think they will ever implement these two things?

    • @СанитарВася
      @СанитарВася 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are just ridiculous! Apple only talks about privacy but actually uses your data behind your back. It just sells you an idea of privacy while it tracks every single tap you make. Aren't you aware of Apple's huge data centers that all they do is collecting your data? You are a typical Apple user lol

    • @almuel
      @almuel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@СанитарВася that’s not true. I made a firewall run through a raspberry Pi to monitor all my network traffic. Yes, Apple does send data traffic from the iPhone but there are a few things that are different about the data that goes from Apple devices to Apple when compared to another device like a Samsung which my other family member uses.
      1. Apple sends all the data anonymously as they don’t allow any tracking ID such as an IDFA from leaving your device, so not just Apple but even facebook or Google can’t know if any data that is sent belongs to your device.
      2. All the domain to which Apple send their data to actually have a legit purpose and Apple has been transparent about what they are for, for example some domains are for the sole purpose of checking if an app that you have opened has a Legit certificate, if it is not in their database then it does not have a certificate and Apple will warn the user that the app or website is unsafe. All the traffic that leaves from my home network to Apple has been for such security reasons and again because they don’t send any tracking ID along with it, none of those data can be tracked by Apple.
      Whereas with all the android, Microsoft and other devices connected on my home network there is so much data traffic that goes to say Google and Samsung and when I check their domains there is no transparency on why they exist and the most suspicious part is their domain names which tries to mask their real identity. Google doesn’t even mask your tracking IDs when sending your data.
      Today on an iPhone if you disable any data and analytics from being sent to Apple, Apple doesn’t track any of that data. Unlike Google that takes all the information they can from you without their consent.

    So 1x zoom primary lens NOT selfie lens? How do you know the framing is correct? Once you sit down? Do you have a mirror so you can monitor your framing or are you just confident it’s good once you have it set up? Did you have someone monitoring the framing while you were speaking into the camera lens? Sort of a generic problem of mine where I want to use the best lens, but I can’t be sure of the framing when I am working alone.

      I don't know their setup but I had to do a similar one for web conferencing using my iPhone as a camera using the Epoccam app (alternative apps exist, I'm not advertising this one in particular) and yes you can setup the framing on your Mac.

      They’re recording with the iPhone, but not necessarily to the iPhone.
      They’re very likely using the iPhone as the camera to capture the video but with it plugged into a Mac which is doing the recording, and so able to see themselves on the Mac’s screen as they record.
      Last year, on either his web site or his podcast, Gruber gave a full description of how they did it. I expect he may do the same this year.

    It’s painful to watch. Gruber spends more time talking and explaining himself and his grandiose idea of why he is necessary than asking questions that users care about. I don’t know why this has become a tradition, but it needs to stop; it’s like old Apple friends from back in the day trying to be relevant and reminding us of their bond that no one cares about.

    So much of today's discourse is reductive, hostile, and performative. I like that John's Talk Show is nuanced, collegial, and informative. Yes there's some apple shining going on, and a lot of the previous commenters roll their eyes at that. I get it, there's a lot of honey in this tea, but hear me out. Longtime DF readers/listeners know that John will spend paragraphs talking about how un-Appley a given bug/oversight in iOS/macOS is, how he referred to Siri's functionality as "akin to someone with a serious head injury" and so on. He can be critical of oversights, bugs, and unfairness without being hostile about it, and that enables him to continue the conversation with Apple execs long after others would have taken their shot, patted themselves on the back, and never been invited to speak again. I look at the continued conversation he's had over the years, and how he's been granted more and more access to Apple's upper echelon, and I'm grateful for his poise and nuance that allows him year after year to take another swing. Do I wish he hit just a little harder at times, ala Kara Swisher's Tim Cook interview? Of course I do, but it's also obvious that Joz and Craig do take note when DF harps on their oversights, bugs, and missteps, and there's enough mutual respect there that they don't need to dunk on that, but they mention it. That collegial pressure, that admiration mixed with expectation of excellence, is why I keep coming back to these.

    • @paulwalker2133
      @paulwalker2133 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m fairly sure it’s wide angle lens on the iPhone, all video and audio recorded locally and then uploaded, and mixed presumably on Final Cut. No green screens it’s all real backgrounds - it just looks a bit flat because of the limitations of the tiny lens on the phone.

    Great interview but I have to disagree with your overly positive stance on iPadOS 15. Whilst the upgrades are amazing, I wish we had native Calculator, and Weather apps and some pro apps that can take advantage of an M1 chip, 2TB Storage, 16GB RAM and USB-C Thunderbolt 4. I am sorry, but I am certain that widgets and App Library could have and should have been included on iPadOS 14 last year!

If you have any kind of respect for yourself, you stop doing those interviews.
