Happy 2020, folks! Sorry for the slow upload. Just been busy with off-camera stuff. I'm still here, no worries. Hope you guys are doing fine, and tight lines!
It's abit messier and without it being in a baitholder, the crabs would rip it apart pretty quickly in these types of traps. Chicken drumsticks are pretty cheap, easy to use and not as bloody.
Great video. I love watching your adventures and purchase a Crab Daddy for our trip to Oregon. They work great. I have not tried casting them with a surf rod yet..is there a sand spike that you recommend? Thanks for all your videos. They are very inspiring.
Planning to visit Oregon this summer and I would like to go crabbing. Can you give us a great place that my family and I can enjoy and catch some crabs and clams.
I live near Newport/Lincoln City. There's several crabbing docks in Newport (under the bridge next to Rogue Brewery/on the harbor near the restaurants) and I've seen people clam under the bridge at minus tides. Siletz Bay has crabbing from the beach and you use the kind of traps PK is using in this video. There's also lots of clamming at Siletz Bay but it's across from where you crab. You need a crabbing license and it's 3 traps/pots per person. Finally, depending on what type of clams you are looking for i.e. razor vs purple vs other, you have to know which beach and it's alot easier to get them if you have a clam gun. The web has alot of resources you can use. If you have younger kids, the type of traps PK is using is abit more entertaining as you pull them up every five minutes. If you crab with pots - it's 30 to 45 mins between pulls and rings are about 15 to 20 between pulls - that waiting time is where kids get bored. Plus, if you crab from the beach - they can play in the sand while you wait for the traps. Just a caution, it gets very crowded during the summer so you have to go early to stake out your "place".
What Jai said. Crabbing usually gets good around early September, so late summer is best. Night time is also better. Siletz Bay is a good place for catching crabs from shore if you're boat-less. You can also clam there on low (negative) tide. You'll see a crowd there during a negative tide. But Netarts is definitely the best bay for clamming, I find. It's not far from Lincoln City either. Be sure to pick up your shellfish license. Good luck.
Hi Pk ! you,re back and doing what you enjoy ,Oregon Crabbing and surf fishing. I've been missing the Oregon coast since I moved to the east coast last year. up here there's no comparison to fishing from the Pacific coast.
Hi PK, I watch lots of your blog on the boat, this is the first time I saw you on the beach. Where exactly is this on Siletz Bay, and is the beach open this time. If I will have another life to live, I want to be you. Jerry
In early 2000 or so was at seaside Oregon. An we were crabbing at low tide, using a small 3 prong garden fork. Would Wahid around an sighting them they'd grab the fork then hand catch them. Wonder if they still do that. Did it several years in a row while I was out there elk hunting just wondering. Got our limits several times.
It depends on the areas so look at the ODFW bulletins. Newport and SIletz have not had any bulletins the last two years but Lincoln City has had a few. I've seen algae closures further south, closer towards the Oregon/Calif border. Most of the closures up here have been due to sewage spills during high rain/flooding periods. Most of the closures lift after a few days/weeks.
I was worried about ya...been a while...I also wondered what those clear gooey things were...Our winter here in Pgh hasnt been too bad...no where near the reports ive seen from Oregon. I'm getting ready to go back down to the keys next week, its alot warmer there....the fishing is always great! Glad to hear Jai's voice also....Tight lines 😎
Hey PK love your video along with the web site, " everylist"! I was wondering if you prefer tying your snares, Hawks, & daddy's straight to the main line braid or off of a leader?

Glad you're back pk been missing your vids:)
I enyoy the video....u workhard bro....
@10:44 - Crab in pot be like: Don't judge me, free chicken.
How fascinating, thanks for sharing. I might try the cast out style someday.
It's alot more fun thatn pots due to not sitting and waiting for 20 to 30 mins. Great exercise !
Damn Brother, that is just too much work!!! Give me a pot any day...Gotta give ya credit, you are dedicated!!! Fun channel. Glad I found you.
lol - i've done both and it's alot more fun using the castable ones. and the piers can get awfully crowded.
Allways enjoying your videos! Why don`t you try with a bit rotten beef or pig liver for bait?

Greetings, PK. Thanks for a vid.
Awesome video
Where is location?
PK. Oregon allows three traps per person at any time. Does that means a person could use three rods with traps? Thanks!
Correct.
I'm glad you are back crabbing 😁
Nice to see you back in Oregon 👍
Which rod and line would you recommend for crabbing?
For crab hawking from shore, something heavy, like a 12 foot heavy surf rod, or a 7 foot Ugly Stik Tiger rod.
i went from 40lb braid to 80lb braid after losing a trap. Make sure your reel is big enuf - 6000 or 8000 size.
Good to see another PK video. Looked like a good time with a few nice keepers. Happy New Year!

Look up MO's restaurant in siletz. There's a parking lot right there. Park at the far end and about 100 to 200 yds right of the pier
FIRST COMMENT! Love the vids pk!
This was awesomeness
Thoughs sacks was squid egg sacks

Hey PK, it’s great to see you, it’s been a while. Great video.
I wonder if squid eggs are good crab bait?
is the crab safe to consume this year. It’s been unsafe for the past two teases due to algae..

thks
Way to go! I love crabbing. I'm up here in Lakeside, Oregon.
Why not just go diving for them?
cuz we are old men and you also have to get wetsuits and eqpt and get in the cold water in the dark. way too old for that!
I was worried about ya...been a while...I also wondered what those clear gooey things were...Our winter here in Pgh hasnt been too bad...no where near the reports ive seen from Oregon. Can you show us how to rig the trap with rope vs the pole. Very interesting video. Good job!
The rope is attached via a spring clip that comes with the trap. But basically, any strong knot will work.
Love it
You picked the right spot. I was there once a week between September and October fishing for salmon right before the mouth of the river
Where is this
Just a friendly FYI to California crabbers... the Crab Hawk and Crab Max and any folding crab trap is are illegal to use in the state of California!!!
Hey PK love your video along with the web site, " everylist"! I was wondering if you prefer tying your snares, Hawks, & daddy's straight to the main line braid or off of a leader?
Straight to braid.
Dude I wish I knew you were in town I live up Silitz River a few miles away from MO’s. Good luck buddy!!!
Next time.
I believe those are squid eggs.
Yes those egg sacs are squid eggs what beach is that? I'd love to catch some squid.
Dang that’s nice catch bro and big one too
Hay man good stuff!!!
We wan to go crabbing, you are showing us how. Thanks so much! Which bay are you at. We will be in Brookings.
We were at Siletz Bay on the south side of Lincoln City. look up MO's restaurant.
Been a while since I've seen a video of yours, great stuff! I thought you moved to California?
Yes, unfortunately, I'm still in Cali. This was an old video from last fall
It's not that bad here is it?
Agree with others saying those are squid eggs.
Those are squid egg clusters!!!
When your reel hit the sand after that first crab I was like “Nooooooo!”
I think those white sacs were squid eggs-
Hey PK, those were “squid eggs” you dropped on the sand.
Put it back in the water man. That’s shark eggs.
If there's no seals use small pice of fish I use salmon it has say more sent I have was more luck then just chicken and i always ha e scraps
You should reach out to Outdoor Chef Life about the "egg sacks". I believe he had some in one of his catch and cook videos but they weren't eggs.
dude why wouldnt u throw them eggs..which look like octopus eggs back in the water??????
Because they would just wash back up on shore
@@Deathdealer40cal still do your due diligent and throw it back in the water. at least try to do the right thing. just saying.
You need to do catch and cook more!! Would bring more different viewers to your channel
