  • atlus really made me wait 8 years for mid lmao
    Shin Megami Tensei V is prolly one of the biggest missteps i seen atlus make so far, and it really sucks seein most everything i worried bout the game becoming actually happen. But since this game sold real well, and has gotten so much praise, i dont doubt that Atlus sees this as the winning formula and is gonna stick w this kinda writing and gameplay for the future.
    oh well lol at least i got 25 years worth of great games i can still enjoy

    • @PrismPoint
      @PrismPoint 2 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      From what I've heard, that seems to be a response to criticism for issues getting the neutral path in one of the earlier games;
      There was a late game choice that only had two options: one order and one chaos. If you were neutral up until that point, there was no way to remain neutral, you would either get order or chaos. To get the neutral ending you would have had to numerically plan out your order and chaos choices to be exactly enough so that the corresponding choice would balance out.
      Basing endings on a single choice is still not great game design, but I guess the developers wanted to be a bit more player friendly.

    • @Lordilucas12
      @Lordilucas12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      @@haruhirogrimgar6047 Not really since most endings require you to have chosen certain options earlier in the game. Making sure certain characters are alive, that you see certain scenes that lead to a specific route, etc etc
      I'd actually argue at least devil survivor 1 has one of the most choices in the series, whereas most mainlines are just checking if a number is on the law chaos or neutral scale, you actually have a branch of options leading to specific endings
      desu2 is mostly one choice though aside from saving one character or not and getting the not-social links up :^)

    • @haruhirogrimgar6047
      @haruhirogrimgar6047 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Lordilucas12 I feel like unless you intentionally pick incorrect options you will have access to 4 out of the 5 majour endings in Devil Survivor 1. And on a second playthrough once you know what you are doing all 5 should be easy.
      But I do agree on the notion Devil Survivor probably has the most meaningful choices in any given series. Who lives, who dies, who you align yourself with vs make enemies of, etc. A lot better than your choices mainly deciding what bosses you face and which after-credits scene you get.

      Everything in here is a joke including the video attached to this trash ocean of a opinion I'll make all of you look dumb point by point detail by detail but what will I gain doing so, if someone pays me to argue on my defense on this game I'll proceed but all I'm gonna' say is how much giraffe porn do you guys watch to play this game and look down upon it , the game has good graphics based on the engine it's self which is unreal engine 5, the gameplay is there, nice and hard similar to the rest of the series , I don't know what the hell this guy was saying in the video listed above , because by that logic every smt game had the same flaw of having a jacked boss until you become OP and slap fire out of him, the story is one of the best in the series in terms of how compelling it is , the so called human in the video was blaspheming the characters and the fact you chase after them but nocturne is dam near the exact same thing chasing after the maiden and that b*** and that other guy and this and that it's the same exact thing I don't know what the hell you so called people are saying, damn near everything in this game is the same as the rest of the serious hell even better than smt 1,2, if... , and to a certain degree 3, the only reason it's not better than 3 is the lack of endings that is all. The one MAJOR downer to this game is the lack of endings like neutral chaos, neutral law, chaos law, law chaos , etc etc etc that's it, for the rest the game mechanis are there and everything, what the hell have you guys been doing for 160 plus hours talking about " Oh I put 160+ hours into this game" playing the story over and over? I explored every crack and cranny I found , especially the dlcs and side quest , the amount of detail is outstanding, not the mention the missions that require a full moon or a new moon to appear on the map, which 80% of players don't even f*** know about because these guys are either high as f*** or doing some other BS in the game, other than the pop up glitches and etc that are due to the shitty Switch hardware components , this game gets 5 out of 5 , with the 6 out of 5 badass seal of approval FYM. And this is not even half of what I have to say I haven't even began coming at the laughable points people said about why they dislike this game , points that have nothing to do with logic what so ever, all logic went out the window when I read all this s** and watched this trash ass video oh men. I'll be making a video soon on this very topic. Mary sue characters? I was crushed by the oppressive atmosphere and brutal combat. I considered myself a veteran, but my prior gaming experience was sheltered. I was naive and the game punished me harshly. My attempts to recruit demons resulted in me getting insulted, manipulated, robbed, and slapped up. Bosses would hit my weaknesses and it seemed like I never had a turn.
    Back then, it felt like an occultic piece of media that would have circulated behind the scenes. At the time, I didn't know anybody who played it. I tried to share the experience, but my friends didnt appreciate it.

I reached the 3rd area, we got into discord and the first thing i asked him is "yo, is it me, or has the story not advanced a thing since the beginning?" and he replied with a big yes. After reaching the end of the 3rd area and knowing barely anything about the story, i knew this game's storytelling and pacing would be awful. I can basically sum up my experience of the story like this:
    - "oh hey, cool, i beat the hydra, am i getting cool bits of the story yet? oh cool, yhvh is dead, fake tokyo, cool, i look forward to seeing this story unravel"
    - "cool, i beat lahmu, Tao "died", i dont care, am i getting more story bits? knowledge, nahobino, gods looking for their knowledge, cool"
    - "ok i beat surt, what wtf? we're already going after the demons? wtf what about lucifer's role in the story? what about the chaos side of things? where is the good ol clash of ideologies between main characters? where is atsuta? where is his personality?"
    and from there, i completely lost interest in the story, i only gave a crap cause i wanted to beat the bosses. The story, in fewer words, is basically "tell, not show"

      Yeah, I noticed pretty early that this game does not have any respect for its player whatsoever. Every character makes only the most bland and insightless observations and absolutely MUST tell you about it in very explicit ways. Every game mechanic or interface element needs a tutorial window because it doesn't trust you to investigate and learn things on your own. All the way to the end of the game everyone is repeating the same thing they've said five times before, with no added nuance or development. It is bizarre how little this game thinks of you.

      I'm just coming back from my 3rd "break" from SMT5, desperately trying to finish this game, I'm right before Surt, 75 hours in (I am meticulous and do EVERYTHING there is to do in RPGs) and I just. Can't. Give. A shit. I am beyond disappointed with it so far, it's a slog, the world is so frustrating to navigate around, yeah they got rid of random encounters, but now that physical attacks take MP (seriously, who the fuck thought that was a good idea), I'm hemorrhaging resources and macca whenever I do run into an enemy, so now instead I'm constantly running around, not able to explore properly, not able to mentally map the areas in my mind, because the combat is so frustrating that I just want to avoid it.
      Basically everything that I was trying to tell myself "wasn't a big" deal, was just verbalized to me in this video. Never heard of this guy before but he is absolutely right. This is my favourite series of all time, and the fact that I can't even finish this entry... I can't even believe it. To see Atlus go all out for Persona 5, only to dump this out... it doesn't make me feel good for SMT going forward. Either way, I'm not going to waste anymore time forcing myself through this.

    This was my first SMT game and the way the endings were handled rubbed me the wrong way. It makes you choose your ending, but if the choices you made in the game, which didn't feel like they really mattered, didn't align with the ending the game punishes you. I've seen comments saying the punishment is minor, but no way in hell I'm grinding all that money for a single side-quest.

    I defineatly think this game suffered from the problem that alot of series go through. Where when they finally get more budget, and make a big step forward, the developers try to do way to much and end up falling on their face.
    I actually really like the gameplay, to my recollection I never had to grind, and I was able to handle bosses from between 10-5 levels under them, in which it was slightly challenging. (Shiva being a super boss was the exception)
    I honestly think the devs know what they did wrong, and in good will are going to improve. This game could have be much more successful if it had a better story, and captivated it's audience in a different way, and I really hope Atlus catches on to that

    • @999a0s
      @999a0s 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      here's what i think happened. i think there were way too many hands in the pot from the beginning (hence story rewrites etc), and a lot of time / money was wasted in initial concept and planning deliberation. after P5 and SMT4's success, the franchise is a hot ticket, and everyone wants a say. the game then gets announced WAY too early because so much time was spent in concept, so the team has to scramble to meet arbitrary content benchmarks handed down from above - things like "we need 200 demons, bc this game has to have the most demons" (and so we can sell this as a "real AAA game"). with so much scale to tackle in rapidly dwindling time, the team licenses photogrammetry model packs and PBR textures to quickly create massive environments in UE4. but because of this, the world, by Atlus standards, looks generic, and feels barren and devoid of soul. note that the music, a more independent, non-hierarchically managed side of development, turned out fantastic.
      the writing and characterization seem to also be victims of design by committee. the writing could accurately be described as non-existent, and that's frustrating, because in my opinion SMT excels the MOST in a story-driven treatment; it seems like they saw the western comments about SMT being story-sparse and took them to heart. but games like Nocturne described as "story-sparse" weren't, really; Nocturne was story-dense relative to its scale, but a lot of the story was told through environmental storytelling and narrative breadcrumbs scattered everywhere. the ratio of story beats to playtime is great in Nocturne. by comparison, there's so little narrative or design in SMTV that it feels like a smaller game than Nocturne! the "world" in "open world" is only "world" when there's uniqueness, novel things to experience and engage with; in their absence the environment has no feeling of scale. the feeling of scale is found in the amount of different experiences you have in the game; a giant PBR environment can never substitute for actual storytelling.

    My favorite example of this is Amanozako. She's like the first demon who's actually a character in Da'at. She appears all the time in the game, goes suddenly berserk in that one sidequest and talks a ton of cryptic shit when you acquire the keys to the Empirean. I was kinda hyped at the possible plot reveals there, only for her to turn out to be another random irrelevant quest demon. Same thing for Fionn. Cool boss fight outta nowhere in Minato, with a cutscene and all, only to be another quest demon on a random easily missable mountaintop. Tao just dies, comes back then fucks off, the monk does the same thing minus the dying part. Yuzuru doesn't even talk before fusing with Tsukuyomi in their boss fight. What a shame.

SMT1 has also the issue of some weird ass char interaction. At one point you kill Law hero girlfriend and he don't interact or care at all. Those game are still great and all, my point is just that we never had good story telling in the main SMT game. The story feel very basic and just sound well on an outside perspective (like a wiki). Take Nocturne against as an example. The Reason npc just chit chat with you time to time when you find them, Then Mantra HQ happened and now they drop some heavy lore about their Reason and that kinda it. I found it hard to grew attach to them since we know basically nothing beside some bit of personality and their reason.

    Bought the game on Day1 and I’m now almost at the end (need to find a handful of Miman and Glory, defeat the last “tower” with those 99 LVL demons and go into the Throne Room).
    It’s the first time an SMT game took me so long to complete. One year and 3 months.
    I agree with you about the lack of significant storyline. I had put it aside so many times in 2022 and considered quitting. But then I felt like going back to that world to see if anything changed.
    It wants to be both a Nocturne sequel and a mix of all the SMT tropes: end of the world and the sacrifice of the Megami reincarnation like SMT? Check. Angels taking care of the protagonist like in SMTII? Check. A school being invaded by demons like SMTIf…? Check. Different versions of Tokyo like in SMTIV? Check.
    And the Nocturne references (I liked them honestly) being set 18 years after a Conception and the game being released 18 years after Nocturne was nice.
    But all of these elements put together could never coexist with the same consistency and importance they have in each of the single games they are taken from…
    Especially if you want this to be different, with the open world aspect which hints at BotW exclusivity on Switch… but with no sign of the same fun and deep gameplay in exploration!
    I’ll complete the game in the next few days and then work on my retrospective (maybe)…
    Cool analysis, I was surprised as well (and also hyped) when I read all those enthusiastic reviews!

Sure there was always some grand high stakes plot unraveling with ideas and stuff but there was also some really casual moments of the survivors And Demons just living about going on with their day. This was even in nocturne the game built on loneliness and isolation while traveling the ruins of Japan. Yea, that is the big thing that is missing from SMT these days. What made the older titles special was that they remembered that they where living worlds that existed separately from the main character. Everyone had their own lives and ideals, from demons and random NPC's to various side characters. A big reason to why things ultimately lead to confrontations between the main characters was precisely cause other characters had their own lives.

    I don't necessarily disagree with every point. You mentioned quite a few good ones, ones I agree with myself. The level curve in this game was insane leading into the final area, the enemies felt very spongey, the story lacked heavily, and the lack of character development and purpose in general is sorry.
    Despite all of that being said: I genuinely feel SMTV is a good game. The exploration was entertaining, the music was INCREDIBLE, and the gameplay overall was great. Even if the Magatsuhi mechanic was unbalanced to a certain degree, the fact that there is ANY form of interesting innovation and experimentation is fantastic for the series.
    Now about the character designs... I don't understand why a select few is acting as if these demon designs are horrendous, lazy, or uninspired. Quite literally every new design in SMTV looks great. I get it, not everyone is going to be into Idun being idol-like, but it's just ONE demon. It isn't as if every female demon is idol-insipired. Acting as if designs like Artemis or Amanozako are bad is simply strange, delusional even. They're all unique and interesting designs that have some form of meaning/inspiration behind them. If you want to talk about a few "bad" or "ugly" Doi designs, SMTIV:A is *right* there. Haha.
    Not saying it will or should happen, but a SMTV-2 or SMTV-Final wouldn't be a bad next step in the mainline series. SMTV leaves much to be desired, but that isn't to say a SMTV-Final can't learn and improve upon it.

    My BIGGEST gripe with this game is the exploration and level design. In Previous grid-based dungeons I never felt frustrated about getting lost as you can refer to the map. In SMT V however they’ve tried to turn a 3D space into a vertical, cramped maze. The map is so awful it barely distinguishes areas from height or depth. I can count times in SMT V where the route to the next part of the map is some bullshit tunnel hidden between rocks or under a highway overpass. It is just tedious to explore anywhere in this game. I found myself warping back to the fount often just to avoid it. If there’s an unreachable item or Miman on a roof that’s too high to reach the default way this game approaches reaching the said area is looping around the entire map so you can reach a high enough mountain which then allows you to jump on top of the rooftop. The last area in particular does this a few times.

    I think the only thing I really feel needs to be majorly addressed is your issue with what Lucifer was blogging about at the end of SMT5 (the Mandala System) is a long established aspect of the Amala Multiverse in SMT; the Axiom, or, Great Will, autonomously creates Demons to fill the desires of humanity, and, as YHVH said in SMT2, killing him doesn't matter because the "will of the universe" (the Axiom) will recreate him over and over again.
    The idea seemed to me that Lucifer was trying to explain to you that using the Throne of Creation will not create a permanent solution because the world's still part of the Amala Multiverse and the Axiom will, inevitably, fuck with your vision for the future, and you need some sort of secret knowledge to segregate this universe from the rest of the Amala. I think more than anything the issue is it's largely a rehash of Dagda's master plan of "if we kill all the gods and kill everyone, nobody will be around to make the Axiom remake YHVH" from SMT4A, not that the concept is somehow "fanfiction".
    I definitely agree with you that the story was a shitshow overall, but in my play through I didn't find the level related damage scaling was an actual issue for actually important battles except when I messed with the big strong men who appeared in the first area. In terms of overall balance and challenge, I felt the game was, like most SMT games, at it's toughest early on, in the first area of Da'at, with the Chimera, one of the side quest bosses and final boss of that area requiring me to actually build a proper team to deal with things and exploit weaknesses to progress. SMT3 also had a system of damage mitigation based on level, so I don't think this is some new, specific issue to SMT5 as a concept, I think it's just overtuned and should have some level of cap. Also, yes, encountered demons are "stronger" than their recruited version, but encounter demons also don't hit the same as recruited demons. This isn't new though, not with SMT nor with RPGs with recruitable enemies in general. Overall, I think your issues with the gameplay are broadly more a symptom of the issues with exploration than the combat inherently, which, I found to be some of the strongest in the series as a whole, with only a few small issue areas which you didn't really bring up in your video at all. It's ultimately a subjective thing though, so to each their own.
    I will say though, I think our interests, in that we want SMT to be the best it can be, are aligned. I hope that SMT 6 or whatever comes next will be able to avoid the development hell that clearly butchered the plot of this game.

      @@darkhorse744 my guess is it's because no other SMT game mentions the amala universe, meaning it is never confirmed or denied, and megaten fans assume that since it is a universe, it must apply to all of the games. or they just think the idea of a named multiverse is cool. doesn't help that localizations of SMT games, official or otherwise, are infamously VERY sloppy, partially due to the fact that mainline just didn't find the same level of overseas success. it doesnt seem so bad at first, but this is how megaten fans also mistake the axiom for the great will, when in the original jp release, they were clearly different entities that even used different words to distinguish them. the great will isn't mentioned in IVA at all, it's just the axiom in that game, which is more like the canopus from devil survivor 2 record breaker.

      @@frankbrocker2963 True, lore stuff can also get pretty weird, I think the newer SMT Translations are definitely better than the older ones, Nocturne ended up messing up a lot of Demon Names and is also probably the reason that People think the Great Will is YHVH.

    • @frankbrocker2963

      @@darkhorse744 no idea how people mistake the great will for YHVH, the great will is stronger than and more ever-present in the games than YHVH is. the great will would be the binding factor of all of these games, not the amala universe or axiom, those are concepts introduced in and exclusive to those games, though they may share similarities with or be based off of previous ideas. i think another big problem is not just the translations, but megaten fans simply not paying attention to the stories and lore. they don't bother to read into and think about what IS there, instead just going with whatever headcanon seems cooler to them personally. this doesn't even include just plot details either, it even bleeds into other aspects such as notoriously III's soundtrack, what with getting the name of "Forced Battle" wrong even though the correct translation dates as far back as the original western localization, and more notoriously "ONE MORE GOD REJECTED" instead of "War broke out in heaven". Also the idea of fiends being just skeleton men is incorrect, which is strange because the fiends not only have been around since SFC SMTII, but the fiends are different in EVERY mainline game. III and V are the only games that share fiends and where they represent death, and V just copies III's fiends (aside from alice) bc of the DLC quest. also, III is the only mainline game where the fiends fit the game thematically and, besides hell biker, aren't just cool references, whereas V just copies III's for content's sake and possible connection bait.
      im not too familiar with V's localization issues, but i wouldn't be surprised if there are any or many in fact. i will research this soon.

Reading more about the myths and stories they took inspiration from for the game made me appreciate how much thought they put into the setting. I thought my success was 70% my team optimization and 30% my levels, but I guess it was 40% my team optimization and 60% just having the better stats. Which is a huge bummer.

    I really like seeing lots of opnions and i was waiting for yours tbh, i got into mainline thanks to your SMT IV vid and i loved that game.
    For me, the "Dungeons" were more focused on the Area exploring themselves, some parts to proceed were a bit trickier to get to, but what would have just actually made the exploring 100 times more fun, was to simply give Nahobino a Double Jump, i kinda wished the movement during exploring was just a little more fluid like NieR Automata for example.
    As for the video itself, i mostly agree with what was exposed, specially the story part, the other big miss for me was removing "Gun/Bullet" and just keeping it like just Phys attacks like Nocturne instead of IV, but what really disliked was that buffs/debuffs are super expensive and they last momentarily, also that now there is single and party buff skills like Persona.
    Clearly this SMT was made in mind for Persona fans who have never played a mainline game before. Story is bad, but i think that its still better than IV:A since you dont have an obnoxiously annoying party with you lmao (Gaston is kinda ok imo). SMT IV still my fav mainline yet, i bought Nocturne HD while waiting for this one, and i like Nocturne much more as a game overall, even tho it feels more "old school" jrpg since what i mostly found hard where the dungeons themselves more than the combat.
    Also i find harsh that many call Doi a "bad artist" since i relly think his designs are starting to get much more solid grasp vs older entries where he worked, i prefer his Lucifer over IV's sad ayy lmao any day tbh.

Not to mention the charge and concentrate buffs are literally useless with how small the damage increase is. And the accuracy/evasion buffs and debuffs honestly feel like they don't do anything. The buffs and debunks are super underwhelming in this game. Not even bosses bother using them.

      My main issue with it was that besides being SUPER EXPENSIVE ON MP like SMTIV:A (seriously wtf MP drains like crazy on that game, specially buffs) is that they also last for a moment, which truly like Alex said, makes buffs completely worthless on the game since you waste so many resources to get so little in return, which in turn ALSO make Dek-unda/kaja skills complete useless too, since the big advantage was that if your enemy buffed for 3 turns, you would Dekaja him and make ALL his effort go down the drain with it by having that kind of skill on you instead of another type of skill using that slot on your MC or demon, same that the enemies could do to you as well, or just also removing their debuffs you did to them as well, like the Ose mini-boss did when you wanted to activate the terminal on IV.
      Persona on terms of buffs, only Charge/Concentrate are the only ones that matter, and maybe Sukukaja a bit if you were hunting golden hands, since those are basically the Mitamas from V pretty much, yet not as to give you a FREE LEVEL item, just rewarded you lots of XP and money if you managed to beat them before they run away. Still, Persona has never been too buff focused compared to mainline.
      As for older SMT games (only have played Nocturne onwards), I don't know if there are single and party buffs like V had, but im sure that work better than on V on most of them. Recently started Soul Hackers on 3DS and man, I'm really enjoying it.

The ability to order the party, the fact that items are a lot more accessible and useful, the essences and affinity system allowing for diverse builds, and generally having a lot more agency and less RNG BS are just a few big improvements to the general combat of SMT. It's a blast to play from a gameplay perspective.

    I still like the game even though I find myself agreeing with a lot of what was said here. I'm just wondering how an inevitable expansion game can truly "fix" all this. Like, the combat systems wouldn't be too hard to re-do as a lot of the problem is tied to the level system. I believe SMT V combat would be the best in the franchise if the whole "levels determine true strength" part was removed and the bosses were less tanky during even match ups. I found myself using EVERY skill, item, and demon at my disposal during even match-ups and felt extreme satisfaction from beating enemies and bosses in those kind of fights, but once the realization hits that you can grind out mitama and absolutely rip and tear everything in front of you save for super bosses, the game became incredibly dull. To put it in perspective, hitting level 99 makes it to where you can absolutely ass blast the entire ending and be wrapped up with the final bosses in less than an hour.
    The ATLUS music and sound design team was pretty much on point as always, not much to say here other than I thoroughly enjoy and still listen to most all of the soundtrack. Not sure I like the pre-battle song as much as previous games (mostly cause it just sounds like nails scraping against a chalk board), the rest was great though.
    I both agree and disagree on the exploration. I feel there were quite a few quests that gave you some background info about the world, but mostly by what the demons experienced, not the world at large because everything's a barren wasteland and there are really no humans besides the NPC reps. I'll be honest, this disconnect of the game not being a very human-filled story, is probably what had a lot of the story department scratching their head at what to do. I suppose they could've given you many stronger reasons to care about the demons, but they don't really always follow through on that at every point because again, most get so little screen time and so little to say. As for the actual exploration, I hope they never do Mimans again, I just think it's outright bad and if I wanted them, I would just play an ubisoft open world game. I feel like the first area was a pretty great introductory zone, but It's kinda sad that every other map followed it in design. I get that the map is basically a few zones in a largely homogenous country but they definitely could've added more spice to each zone and some better landmarks to really make them stand out.
    The story is, without a doubt, the worst part. I'd say I like a lot more moments of it for laughs than as an actual pieced-together story. So far, i've only done the "Destroy the Throne" ending as well and yea, it's just not very satisfying and makes me wonder why it's even an option at all.

    The biggest refinement they made was optimizing fusion so you could just fuse whatever demons you had available from either your party or the Compendium. No other advancements or innovations in the classical JRPG formula are presented here. I'm not saying go all Xenosaga 2, but my goodness could they not playtest that game and think "we have demons clumped together, why are we having the player fight each individual one?" They also apparently only played GTA3 for an hour and said "yep, that's an open world game alright," and made their visual language all wrong. Why are the quest icons fundamentally screwed up? They're a beige when they're available, then they're green when they're underway, then red when available to complete..? Why?! Green gives the impression you can complete it, and red gives the impression that it's either locked, unavailable, or you can't complete it (why a game would do this nowadays, it doesn't make sense, but that's the impression the color red gives). I've backtracked at times, only to be like "why can't I complete this quest? The icon is green..." only to realize/remember green means "not complete at all you moron, wait until it turns red!" It's seriously overhyped just so that it can "compete" with Persona.

  • @reikurokaze3988
    @reikurokaze3988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +211

    Smt5 is a reconstruction of the tropes traditionally associated with law, chaos, and neutral. What made me think of this is how none of the ending feel like "traditional" law, choas, and neutral and are even named differently from straight up their namesakes even though alignment is still in the game.
    Then it hit me, they all reconstruct the basic idea of each alignment. For instance the law route isn't about the great will but more along the lines of having a single unifer for people to follow. Ichiro perfectly sums this up with his many conversations saying he isn't confident to think for himself and would much rather have better leaders guide him. Its not about stripping people of free will but having that single collective directive with someone with good intentions guiding them. Bethel angel's even say they dont want the great will back but feel they still need someone with the qualifications to lead them.
    Chaos is chaos in the sense that it goes against law and has a full democracy with differing ideals and ideologies. With how the gods are planning to make a pantheon of a melding pot where they all way in their decision. In this sense its chaos because under norms you don't compare religions like this for instance, its usually considered blasphemous aka chaos.
    Neutral is the route where nuwa and shohei make it clear they have a love/hate relationship with demons and humans. So what better way to even the playing field than destroy the throne leaving demons without a goal. And leaving humans in a case where they must fend for themselves, true *neutrality*. We even get further characterization later on that gives insight to shohei and nuwa's characters. They are the extreme of a neutral outlook.
    Finally the secret ending which follows the neutral ending route (destroy the throne). Instead of neutrality in the sense of an even playing field, it follows neutrality in the since gods/demons and humans remain in seperate realms no longer able to interfere with one another. Case in point v-kun being in a similar situation to lucifer, being in a realm where he can only observe his friends because of following through with his creation of seperate worlds. Obviously he needed to become a god in the first place to take the throne, so obviously he's not exempt to his own rules aka neutrality.
    All in all just wanted to put my thoughts here because I kept seeing people complain about the story. Not saying its great, but clearly the ideas and concepts are here.

      Chaos being chaos in the sense of being opposed to law doesn't make much sense because neutrality is also opposed to law. The alignments in this game feel very underdeveloped in my opinion. The tsukuyomi route being chaos makes no sense to me because the ending to that route is way less chaotic than destroying the throne, which you do "for the sake of humanity".

    • @reikurokaze3988
      @reikurokaze3988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@melansmt8173 wanna preface this by saying this game doesn't follow traditional alignments like smt4 where chaos is demons, law is angels, and neutral is human. So thats what i feel like im interpreting when you say how you feel about the alignments.
      chaos opposes law in the sense of instead of 1 governing power, chaos is all about multiple. Which also hearkened back to lucifer's og goal on how he believed the great will shouldn't govern everything but be left to everyone to decide.
      Destroying the throne is "neutral" because it removes a major source of power for "both" humans and demons, leaving them in an equal setting until either demons or humans rise up. With the true ending taking that a step further and separating them entirely, not favoring either side of conflict. There is no "for the sake of humanity" like in smt4 for instance. In 5 there are no "angels, demons, of humans" per se the wars been over what the game is about is deciding what to do with the leftover remains of the world. Law- have a singular force govern you, Chaos- have everyone be equals (both demon and humans coming together) which goes against great will intentions and why he forbade nahobinos in the first place aka why it opposes law, and the two neutral endings which are in favor of leveling the playing field between both sides of demon and human.

    • @melansmt8173
      @melansmt8173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@reikurokaze3988 I wouldn't say that both neutral endings are about leveling the playing field. The true ending is about making a world where gods and demons don't exist and humanity having a world solely for them. That, to me at least, screams "for the sake of humanity". Admittedly, the game doesn't do a good job of explaining and fleshing out the chaos and neutral alignments. It would make more sense to categorize the alignments in this game as being monotheism, polytheism, and atheism. Also, in smt 5, the alignments can be summed up as either upholding the status quo of God (law), letting God's and demons take charge of the world but without the "strong rule over the weak" philosophy (chaos), and neutral being that you let humanity lead themselves and their future.

    11:00 LMFAAAO, getting up there and not finding shit was fr the rage inducing moment for sure. Some of the areas where you have to platform and jump, makes you wonder if something is truly there, after fighting to get up there.
    I still love the game, despite it's flaws and characters, but I'm hoping that theres another version that takes an older narrative, and puts it into perspective.
    When we first saw the game, it looked a lot more focused around the protagonist and Tao, but then after four years, a lot definitely changed.
    And Yuzuru was almost a protagonist?? Wtf? He would have been decent. I was expecting his sister to be killed somewhere in the story, and he spirals out of control into chaos alignment, and such.

It doesn't provoke thoughts much than previous iteration regardless of routes/endings. The ost is good, good enough imo. Absolutely loving the Shiva battle ost btw.
    Rants? The demifiend part should be in the base game not as paid dlc. Totally angry on this because this dlc gives more exposure of the story in each and every fiend battle [except for ghost rider]. I honesty believe that this demifiend dlc is a cut content.
    The grind kinda necessitates you to buy the mitama dlc what with poor exp gain in every fight except for quest and boss battles. Obviously, our new gaming trend of 'creating a problem and sell the solution'.
    By itself, Imma give this game 7 out of 10. It is good but you won't miss anything big if you skip this game. In the grand scale of SMTverse, i'd give this game a 6. I wanna give it 5 but the Quality of Life is what sorely needed in SMT/Persona games from now on.

    I'm currently about 100hrs into SMTV and I have to agree with a lot of your points. Graphically it's mediocre, technically it's subpar, and the dungeons are just plain awful. The plot is not even worth mentioning.
    The only reasons I haven't put it down is because I'm really enjoying the battle system, the soundtrack, and the demon's designs. I really want to see what the higher level demons look like and read the lore behind them. Choosing and fusing demons to make a new one, being able to break one down for its skills and affinities is so satisfying.
    Overall, I would actually recommend this game to someone who likes JRPGs because Ifeel they would need to decide for themselves if it's good or not.
    I nitpicked at a bunch of different things and complain about it a lot while playing but I'm actually enjoying it. I know a few people are commenting on the difficulty but I haven't really had any problems with it being too tough. I can definitely see myself playing it again a couple years down the line.

    • @puzzle_boy
      @puzzle_boy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm playing it again this year (second play) and I'd say even if it's graphically not top tier it looks better than much Nintendo Switch games but I guess that it's thanks to the art direction. Technically it's still lacking but it's perfectly playable nonetheless. And the dungeons are fine, except maybe for the last one, but it's artistically beautiful so it can be forgiven. Although, I think world as a whole is the dungeon this time. And if we see it that way it's excellent. The plot is worth mentioning because it has very good elements, and the story and lore behind is actually very very interesting and well thought, the only issue we all have with the game is the way they tell this story, in other words, its narrative direction. It's not interesting to follow but after you understand some things and what they depict you can actually start to like the plot.
      I'm with you with your conclusion, people need to decide for themselves if it's good or not. For me, after being dissapointed at the first glance, I think it's surpassing my like for Fire Emblem Three Houses and it's my "new" favorite Nintendo Switch exclusive game. It does some things worse and some things better than SMT III Nocturne, so I can't decide which one is the best. Better enjoy both although I'm more into games like IV and Strange Journey.

I adored how the final area (Outside of the pretty simplistic dungeon before the finale) let you tackle the bosses in an open-ended way, I enjoyed how the game didn't lose all difficulty after the second main boss, an issue SMT 4 and Nocturne had which personally had me nearly drop them a few times.

      Personally, I felt level scaling was bad. The point of levels is to determine how high your stats are. If I had 10 in every stat at level 1, and had 10 in every stat at level 99, then I should be doing the same amount of damage regardless of the level gap to the enemy, not suffer a debuff just cause the enemy is a higher level. It also made the game extremely easy, since the most you really need to do is match the enemy’s level or at the very least be relatively close and you’ll do good amount of damage regardless of what stats you decide to increase. I did a run where I completely ignored any offense stats and my damage output was still really good. Makes building your character feel pointless unless your trying to min max demifiend or something. I feel like level shouldn’t influence your damage, but your damage stats should influence your damage

    I could never get into the game again after playing it for a bit. I will say that this kinda had lower expectations than I expected, especially with me completing Nocturne HD.
    There have been times where I wanted to get back into playing it but hearing that you need grind out levels just to be strong to fight really shows that I’ll be in battle with one tedious area over and over.
    Nocturne at least gave me an interest to continue the game and it felt proper with different difficulties. Merciful felt very easy as merciless is hard as expected unlike this game.
    I might try to return to the game but that’s after I finish the games I have left. Which is a lot.

    Tbh, the story DID suck ass, but at least I had gameplay and some side missions to enjoy!
    Plus, there's probably going to be a maniax re-release soon, knowing Atlus.
    Sorry you didn't get to enjoy it, I did figure it wasn't going to be everyone's cup of tea.
    (also, i think Atlus's latest writing slump is probably the lack of Kaneko involved)

    Still waiting for your thoughts on SMT V Vengeance

  • @Alex_Barbosa

    I'm one of those people that say gameplay is king, so even if the story is bad, I can still love a game with great gameplay. But SMT5 drops the ball pretty hard. Like the moment to moment decisions in battle are still cool, the demon customization and press turn system will never get old, but the level scaling almost completely ruins the whole experience. Like what is even the point of creating a character or demon build when all of your damage and defense is determined by how close to your opponents level you are. And not only does it wholly determine your damage potential, but also your dodging, your accuracy, your ailment abilities, and even your freaking crit chance. It's so stupid. It kills replayability too because now you know the only thing gatekeeping you from beating a boss is literally your level, not your strategy, or your stats or weaknesses, but you literally just haven't spent enough time grinding.
    I still had fun with this game because the press turn system is just that good, and the story while confused and horribly paced, did keep me interested with it's talk of the throne of creation, the Nahobinos origins, the difference between Gods and Demons and its implications for the SMT universe, but man I can't play it again like I could with the others, and I'm definitely going to wait to see how the next game turns out before I buy it. I'd hate to see the next game drop the ball so hard again.

      Also I freaking hate the Magatsuhi gauge, it's just annoying to randomly have to block every few turns because the enemy suddenly has instant crits on everyone. Especially if you get in a fight with a random enemy, they ambush you, then immediately go into magatsuhi mode so you have to skip another turn just blocking. I get that you could kill them all that turn if your strong enough, but thats not always possinle, especially with the level scaling. And I don't like how OP it is when you use it either. Not to mention they give you the best magatsuhi skill right at the beginning.

    personally, smt5 was one of the most fun i had in a mainline smt gameplay wise. but goddamn i cant even remotely defend the story outside of chad dazai, who (especially in the 4th daat) felt like a law twist on walter at least in terms of personality, which i really enjoyed honestly. still tho id honestly rather take DDS, Devil Summoner, and 4 for story than 5, no doubt. also formatting it to story>gameplay>endings instead of gameplay>story>endings was a bit fucky.
    i really liked playing 5, despite its massive fuckups, since the gameplay (especially combat and demon fusion/party building) and visuals honestly carried the game for me since the story was so lackluster. i didnt notice the whole level gate issue you brought up, but ill admit thats just anecdotal. really hope that at the very least the demon fusion in 6 is elaborated upon and the combat (especially the magatsuhi meter gimmick) is better balanced since the critical magatsuhi move, with as honestly OP as it is, being the default starting move made most of the game way easier than it should be for a mainline smt.

      oh also yeah one of the biggest fuck ups 5 constantly does for me was the illusion of choice options it kept throwing at me.
      i just generally hate illusion of choice dialogue options in games, and even though i loved playing 5, those moments really annoyed me

    4:15 The throne of creation got mentioned before that moment half a dozen times. The fight vs Camael, the talks with Koshimizu, Lahmu, and more.
    6:55 The chaos faction does get their points across plenty of times...admittedly most of it through 'enemy trying to convert you' type dialogue which ain't the best.
    13:20 I will say, as someone who played strength for the first time, playing strength build feels like an inferior experience. There's already so many physical-focused demons that I wished I had gone with magic or support or literally anything else half a dozen times
    16:50 Honestly my least favourite part of the level gating is that when you miss a piece of content you were supposed to do earlier it gets easy as piss.
    17:10 I started hard mode on my first playthrough, some things took up a few tries, yakumo was hard, but everything was doable
    21:00 Tao leaving made sense story wise. She's there to guide the new creator. If you refuse to be that new creator, of course she'd fuck off.
    28:55 This is implying that the ratio of good to mid songs was better in previous games. Not in most of them.
