Sly Cooper has some of the tightest controls of all the games I've played. If the game says you didn't hit the button, I don't think you hit the damn button, DSP.
I recently replayed this game on my old PS2 slim w/ a messed up controller (the analog turns off randomly) and the jump button was *still* working perfectly for me.

I always liked the 1st game's 'less-is-more' gameplay. Like the one-hit-kill factor for example. Just goes to show how the gameplay doesn't have to be complicated to be lots of fun. It can actually make the player study their environment more and plan strategies.
Late comment, but here it goes. It's even more awesome when attempting MTS (removing the "life is lost if killed" factor) in specific stages that you can skip stuff such as the library in Ep. 1

I would even go as far to say that Sly 1 has one of the most precise control schemes out of all 3rd person plattforming games of the early PS2 era. At least the ones I have played.

To be fair, I think most people have messed up once or twice around 16:35, and that is because the second hook seems further than it really is, leading to players attempting to double jump before hitting O to latch on. However most people - unlike Phil - have enough of a brain to try other techniques and learn as the game progresses. I have beat the Sly Cooper trilogy on the PS2 (as a kid) and the remastered version on the PS3, and I have never once had any complaints of unresponsive controls; the Sly games are pretty well known for controlling really well. It's obvious that DSP lies to cover up his flaws as a gamer.
Here's a fun drinking game: When he starts a level, take a shot for every time you're able to beat a level before he does in this compilation. Two shots if you beat the Master Thief Sprint for that level. Tips: Keep a trashcan nearby Alternate with friends so you don't succumb to alcohol poisoning as fast.

That jump took me two tries, one lucky charm. Yeah, that hook CAN be a bit finicky at times. Never had any issues with that in the PS3 version, though--only with the original.

Most of the reasons he dies is because he has a slow reaction speed, he needs to press X right after X, not 1 second after.
Yeah, Sly's double-jump in this game seems to get more distance than height (something they changed in the sequels).

I have beat the Sly Cooper trilogy on the PS2 (as a kid) and the remastered version on the PS3, and I have never once had any complaints of unresponsive controls; the Sly games are pretty well known for controlling really well. It's obvious that DSP lies to cover up his flaws as a gamer.
His flaws as an intelligent human being too.

When he starts a level, take a shot for every time you're able to beat a level before he does in this compilation. Two shots if you beat the Master Thief Sprint for that level.

All I have to say is this:
I was 10 when I first played this game.
Sure, I had played (and 100%'d) Sly 3 prior, but the controls are slightly different.
That jump took me two tries, one lucky charm. Give me a break, this guy's CLEARLY an adult, I dunno who the heck he is, but if a young, stupid, stubborn me can beat it in TWO tries then it's just pathetic how he can't get it in nearly endless tries.

Kind of shocked Mz Ruby's fight isn't here (or wasn't eventful) considering on the HD Collection it actually is broken (music and beats are desynced horribly). It must have counteracted his shit play.

I beat Jak II when I was 7 and the first sly game when I was around 8 or 9. Phil makes these games look way harder than they actually are.

Why is it whenever there is a minigame or something that he doesn't die in he is like "Oh that's fun I like how they are breaking up the game doing something different so it's not the same thing the entire time" but whenever there is something that he keeps dying and sucks at (most of it) he is like "WHY IS THIS IN THE GAME IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE REST OF THE GAME!!!"
Side note, didn't Phil praise Duke Nukem Forever for it's variety: like the racing and puzzles, so shouldn't he enjoy the mini-games in Sly Copper.
I feel Clockwerk's taunts fit really well when both Phil is playing and telling him to shut up, especially after watching the rest of the game.

He really didn't rage or have multiple deaths during the Voodoo boss fight? That's way beyond me.
He didn't die at all actually, which is surprising, considering the rhythm in that boss fight was completely ruined in the HD version. Made it difficult to time your button presses to the music 'cause it was out of sync.

It's insane that he took so long to beat the part at 14:52 I actually busted out my copy of Sly cause I couldn't fathom that that part could be even remotely that hard to get past. I did it first try. Unbelievable.

I just started playing this and have zero issues with the controls.
The controls in Sly Cooper games are *very* responsive.
Phil's just being Phil. (either that or his controller's screwed up from all the times he's slammed it on the table)
