4:17 "What the hell kind of place is this? Do you always just walk around asking for $100 from fuckin people?" Oh the irony if you put this in context to present day Phil's "business"
As somebody who played all of these games as a child, and still plays them every now and then as an adult, this is unbelievably frustrating and enraging to watch, but also kind of hilarious. I love how Phil keeps calling the gameplay "inconsistent". Dude, the gameplay is not inconsistent. You just consistently suck.
Yeah, I've seen Phil suck at games. Recently I bought the Jak and Daxter Trilogy on PS3. But when I heard that he did a Jak and Daxter play through, I waited until I got a platinum trophy on the Precursor Legacy and then watched this video. When it comes to games, DSP is his own worst enemy.
This game is so easy. When I first played it, it did seem a little hard because I couldn't understand English very well at that time but it was lots of fun. Now even after 5 years of not playing this game, I can still play this easily and get a plat (the only game I know which awards plats easily).
This is still one of the best TIHYDP's ever made. Pure, no chat hand-holding, raw Phil sucking hard footage of a children's game before rage quitting one of the easiest collectathons ever made. This is the REAL Phil blind playing a game with some of the simplest game mechanics in the PS2 era and he still struggles like an 8 year old taking a calculus test. Just beautiful.
Games like these make for the best TIHYDPs because no amount of hand-holding would've made a difference--this isn't like an RPG, where he can just grind his way to "easy mode"--he still has to follow through and play it legit. When he finally got around to Jak 3, he ended up having trouble with parts of the game I wasn't expecting him to. It's crazy.
"-didn't grow up in this era of platforming games, I grew up in the 2D era. So for me I'm actually suffering a bit here-". Dude, you are in your 30's. You were there for a good part of all of the different eras being born. Suffering? Give me a break, here.
Seriously. He was experimenting with the basic moves at Geyser Rock and mentioned that he looked at the manual, but for some reason he just neglected the Circle button. It's kinda amazing, honestly.
"I grew up in the 2D platformer era"... You're still growing up cause you're still a child... Me too, I grew up in the 2D era and when 3D platformer games came out, I adapted myself... Instead of going from left to right, you just go everywhere... I remember my first time ever playing Mario 64... No trouble at all... I learned the controls and adapted myself to this new perspective in games !! I'm sure it's the same for a lot of people !
As one of many people who has perfected this game, even as a teenager, watching this is both hilarious and disgraceful at the same. XD And at 1:03:43 , that's pretty much saying "it's not that I CAN'T learn, I DON'T WANT to learn, all for the monies and views".
It still kinda blows my mind to this day. An entire face button, completely ignored. Like, he didn't even hit it by accident or anything up until that point.
He picked ONE thing in this game to listen to and actually do... which of ALL the fucking things happened to be... "DON'T GO TO MISTY ISLAND" - Samos are u fkn srs.
There's playing a game with an open/unspoiled mind, and then there's ignorance and attention deficits. Phil tries to be the former, but ends up being the latter. He can't even play a classic without acting so egotistical.
mickle jeff's comment at 15:47 is incorrect. The eco beam mission has absolutely nothing to do with accessing the Dark Eco Plant boss fight. As someone who 100%ed this game at least thrice as far as I can remember, I know that the button at the top of Forbidden Temple leads to the passage to the Blue Eco Vent Switch that unlocks the path to the Dark Eco Plant. Regardless, watching DSP fail at a game my family has owned ever since it came out is nothing short of priceless.
+HegHound 13 A lot of people do make fun of him, and I'm mainly just saying that because I've played classic platformers like this, such as Ratchet & Clank. Phil does suck though. There's no denying that.
Really? His excuse was "I only played for five hours"? The problem is more than his Jak and Daxter competence, it's his damn thought process. Not once does he wonder if there's something HE doesn't understand, it's "the game isn't helping me, waaahhhhh". "Grew up on 2D"? The way he complains, he couldn't get past Super Mario Bros on the NES! An entertaining LP features the player MAKING PROGRESS, and cracking a few jokes here and there. If you need to take time out to learn the game, DO IT AND EDIT IT OUT.
That's the goal. Phil play *very* badly, and sucks at understanding the basics of games. That's why DON'T play videos aren't classic LP like every boring others.
I think the reason why he sucks at these games is because he has no experience what I mean by that is he didn't play ps2 or anything back in the day all he knew was pc gameing so he is used to the pc controls and doesn't know anything about xbox or ps2 or any of those games
I recently did a play through of this game. Knew next to nothing, spent some time in the starting area figuring out the controls, and never had any real problem with anything afterwards. Amazing game, never understood how he had such a difficult time trying to beat it
Because Phil isn't a gamer, but you are. You understand that to properly experience a game, you have to know what you're doing, so you experiment and I'm sure when the game tells you what to do you listen. Phil doens't listen, Phil doesn't care...about anything. He only does this because it's quick easy money that requires no effort on his part
I came back to watch this again, and I noticed something. Towards the end of the game he starts complaining about the "horrible" game design with all the instant deaths. That's because the early levels have few if any bottomless pits or lava and have lots of water to cushion falls, so all that matters is your health, you can always survive three hits. But the later levels are filled with more hazardous obstacles and many things can kill you instantly. So what he's actually complaining about is the very good game design philosophy of having the game get harder as it goes on. As soon as the game starts to get difficult it's just "cheap".
At first going through some of these TIHYDP compilations I was a little tempted to give Phil the benefit of the doubt. I'll admit some of the games I watched do have their share of flaws, bugs, and minor annoyances (Motorstorm does have some moments where the physics gets grating, but it's not nearly as maddening as he makes it look. Same with Metal Gear Solid 1, and that was a ps1 game, so there was bound to be weird moments). But this... He makes this game look like Dark Souls in terms of playability and difficulty. Jak & Daxter... A colorful open world successor to Naughty Dog's classic platformer series, Crash Bandicoot... And most importantly: Rated E for *Everyone*! *Children* play this game! And they play it very well! Children don't constantly blame every mistake made on the game itself. Children have infinitely more maturity and integrity than this guy. It astonishes me how anyone could see a legitimate reason to actually *pay* this guy to play games badly on a regular basis.
I sometimes have to meet Phil halfway on some occasions, too. Like, I've had experience with Jak II since it first came out on the PS2, so I'm a bit biased 'cause I know the finer details of the game, but I definitely get some issues he might have from time to time (doesn't make it any less hilarious when he loses his shit, though). It's his inability to know what's actually the game's fault or when he should accept responsibility for his own mistakes that irks me.
For someone who plays video games for a living, he doesn't have a lot of gamer habits does he? For me when I start a game, I always experiment with the controls a bit to find out what I can do. DSP seems to need text that constantly pops up reminding him what to do, or a voice over to tell him. I find it hard to believe he's an actual gamer.
You could've just looped the 1 minute 40 second incident and it would've captured the essence of everything Phil. What kind of person he is, what kind of gamer, and why he should stop existing.
About that rant of his, his argument is right, people who were young that played this game took time to fidure out little intricate things about the game to beat it, and grown up people usually don't have as much time to play through the game as they did when they were young. They had less responsibilities. Not that this is excusing him at all. Literally failing to press a button for like half the game, not listening to what the game is trying to teach him and complaining about bullshit like "lava kills me" is not excused by that argument. Like that one guy said, "There's only so much a game can teach you". And so long it can teach you the same thing before saying "yeah, they get it". There's also noticing patterns. Most people and especially adults should be able to notice those. And complaining about challenge and 'cheap deaths'? Someone needs to play Kaizo Mario to learn the difference between challenge and cheapness. Also, advice for life: "Look before you leap"
The discrepancy is that adults are at least supposed to be smarter than children, meaning we experiment more efficinetly and learn more rapidly, and so don't require the same abundance of time to learn or infer things. DSP is a statistical outlier and should not have been counted.
Late, but hey, at least you remembered. I completely forgot (and I was gonna tweet about it on the anniversary, as well). Guess I'll be back one year from now lol
@@chaffXgrenade imma be honest, I randomly decided to check a 'This is How you Don't Play' and I picked this one. It was a coincidence that the anniversary was a couple of days ago 😂
@@maxpokebruh27 Looking back to when I was once a fan of Phil myself, the camcorder LPs definitely had a more down-to-earth "real" appeal to them, even if they were still obnoxious at times.
That doesn't account for varying circumstances, though, and according to Phil, the game's all RNG (any given game), so maybe the game will roll success for him this time he limp-dicks a single jump into a pit.
I've been playing Jak and Daxter for literally two decades now- and I've never seen someone have this much trouble on Geyser Rock. This is going to be good.
Wow, its amazing that he finds it in himself to rage over one of the most peaceful, bright and colorful, serene platformers out there. I mean, the beginning of Jak and Daxter is like taking a leisurely, stress-free stroll through a park on a sunday. But no, even here DPS manages to find something to rage about and act like the simplest game mechanics in the world are mystifying and out to get him...
This single playthrough supplied me with a lifetime stock of salt. Plus my children, and their children. Three generations of salt contained in one video.
Imagine 'DSP Plays Spyro': "What?! I'm using the fire breath on these silver guys, but they don't even die! They just turn red for a second and kill me instantly! The game doesn't tell me what to do! This is BULLshit!" "What the fuck, I can't catch these blue guys with the eggs, this is RIDICULISSS! The speed must be bugged or something! GREAT JOB, developers! Make an enemy I can't even catch!" (insert annoying cackle here) (just barely misses a platform while gliding) "What the hell, are you SERIOUS? I LANDED that! N-Now INSTANT DEATH! INSTANT DEATH EVERYWHERE! ... and it puts me ALL THE WAY BACK HERE?! INSTANT DEATH, DO IT ALL OVER! Ever heard of CHECKPOINTS?!"
This guy is the WORST at EVERYTHING! Stop playing games if you can't even learn a simple control! X,X & O! Double jump and spin! Raging like a little kid I mean damn Phil, you're really pissing a lot of us off. It's still funny to watch you complain over and over.
I replayed this game a week ago and I kid you the same thing happened to me at 43:26. It looked near identical that I couldn't help but laugh at myself for making the same mistake as Dave
The amazing thing about not figuring out the triple jump is that he learned there's a spin attack (eventually), and then never thought "I should attack this flying enemy with the omnidirectional attack I've learned while jumping." Like, even when games spoonfeed reasons to try certain things or THE LITERAL ANSWER to him, he can't work it out. Also, wow, 5 and a half hours. I can't go that long when I LIKE a game; it'd be insane to do that while enraged and having a rough time (suggesting I'm missing something). Perhaps concurrently, I've never needed anything near that to learn a basic mechanic. Except once, in the Telltale Sam & Max. You can run by double clicking, if you ever play Seasons 1 or 2 of that.
Did he seriously compare himself to Jesus when he was going on that rant in the Spider Cave? Good fucking god, Spider Cave definitely is a contender for most difficult level, but it isn't *that* hard.
DSP: "I'm just trying to figure shit out for myself, cuz that's what I do when I play games, I figure shit out for myself" and now you have the stream chat hold your hand through every playthrough now
I love how he assumes that whenever someone is stuck at a section of gameplay for, what he probably thinks would be, more than 10 or 15 minutes, they look it up instead of bucking up and actually thinking about what to do. That's fucking rich. I know I've already seen plenty of his bullshit (and not just his very poor showmanship, sense of humor and skill), but I'm still flabbergasted at his inability to work with the game as any other competent gamer would. Working *around* it is another thing, and something you shouldn't have to do. I'll admit Jak and Daxter has some rare instances of camera or platforming problems, but about 95% of his troubles are from him probably not even trying at all or just lacking the appropriate (low level) of skill. There are MANY games out there that would seem like crocks of ass if the player wasn't able to properly... well, play it. I don't even care that Phil can't play very well. What I care about is his constant blaming of the game and just how much he dwells on a single mistake, all like a fucking 10 year old. "This is STUPID!", "So stupid.", "Yeah. Uh huh.", "Fuck this.", "Not my fault. Fuck you.", waa waa waa, etc.
Pretty much sums it up. It's not necessarily the fact that he's bad at a lot of games (though that does factor into it) that gets to me--it's his attitude, and his inability to accept responsibility when he messes up.
Plus the fact that he uploads this all to TH-cam. Even the most terrible player in the world (skills & attitude) could just not upload his videos and no one would ever know.
HammettSHREDZ I know in a game, whenever I just go "screw it imma just look it up" and then see that it was super simple and that I passed it like 3 times I go "OMG I was such an idiot why didn't I think to do that" where as phil is "HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT"
I hate how the zoomer doesn't come to a complete stop when phil shouts ''DONT FALL!''. Obviously bugged driving mechanics. Not a single thing he could do about it.
Love how Phil says his own balls taste like duty? The insult is ridiculous enough and makes no sense but then he just even completely fucks up his own fuck up both when speaking and while playing. It's truly almost amazing how bad he is at everything in life. This is why we watch, none of us could dream of being born horrible enough at everything we do that we can quite literally captivate thousands of people while doing it lmao. Phil is an American hero I tell ya lol. Suck at life, suck at job, suck at everything, still be an icon. Even if it is essentially as just a mockery of what every grown man shouldn't be 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jak 2 was the hardest in the series, that would be definitely hilarious to watch him fail on that one, the races against Erol will make him throw his controller.
I've never played Uncharted, but I find it hard to believe that it could be better than the original Jak & Daxter. Not saying that it's bad. In my opinion, Jak & Daxter is just that damn good.
I enjoyed the original Jak & Daxter, too, but I honestly think it's the weakest in the trilogy (Jak 3 is my personal favorite). Uncharted is fun, but Uncharted 2 was such a massive improvement over it that it was nearly impossible for me to play the original at times. :P
Sad thing is that I never beat Jak 2 or 3 as a kid. I got the HD collection recently and started Jak 2, but I don't have enough experience to give an opinion on it. I don't like it as much as the original though so far. I really liked the aspect of collecting stuff.
That's what I liked about Jak 3. Its still mission-based like Jak 2, but they added more platforming/collecting/exploration elements to it to make it feel more like the first game. Precursor Orbs are easier to find than they were in 2, and using them to buy weapon upgrades/cheats/extras is pretty cool, too.
"What the fuck, he slid off the bridge" It's called snowy mountain, there is fucking ice which causes you to slip. Does this guy not understand basic fucking things
It's really not a hard game. It CAN get pretty rough around the last third or so, but by then, you'd have thought Phil would be used to the controls. Apparently not. :P
Does the long jump within thirty seconds of playing the game in the tutorial Never does it again "God he's so slow" "If I was a tiny bit faster I would've made it" PROCEEDS TO LONG JUMP IMMEDIATELY AFTER SAYING THIS

I still love how Phil learns how to spin during the swamp then promptly proceeds to forget how to spin.
I understand that. I just wish he'd stop complaining about it.
The discrepancy is that adults are at least supposed to be smarter than children, meaning we experiment more efficinetly and learn more rapidly, and so don't require the same abundance of time to learn or infer things.
DSP is a statistical outlier and should not have been counted.
Konradix05 except playing games is his job
41:15 I about died laughing.
Jak: What's happening, man? Why do I keep dying?
Daxter: I don't know, man! I don't know!
Phil's rant about people wanting precursor orbs starting at around 4:15 is really freaking ironic, especially considering he now uses Patreon.
Is DSP the UmbranAlchemist? He sounds like a DSP clone. He literally says everything Phil says word for word.
Little late but happy ninth anniversary to this video.
@@maxpokebruh27 Gotta love happy accidents, eh?
@@chaffXgrenade This one is one of my favorites. I like the TIHYDPs where Phil had the camera, pre direct capture.
@@maxpokebruh27 Looking back to when I was once a fan of Phil myself, the camcorder LPs definitely had a more down-to-earth "real" appeal to them, even if they were still obnoxious at times.
Insanity = doing the same thing over and over again to expect different results.
Man, one of the few moments where Phil has a small victory and then 30:12 happens...
I fucking died at that part LOL.
When im having a hard time with a video game, i refer to DSP's lets plays...
So i can say, "at least im not as shitty as this guy."
oh my god when he figured out that spin attack i had tears in my eyes
1:20:30 I love that groan of frustration. Cracks me up.
This single playthrough supplied me with a lifetime stock of salt. Plus my children, and their children. Three generations of salt contained in one video.
That voice clip at the very end that said "This guy thinks he's so cool ... listening to him OVER and OVER!"
Was that from Spyro?
Yep.
Imagine 'DSP Plays Spyro':
"What?! I'm using the fire breath on these silver guys, but they don't even die! They just turn red for a second and kill me instantly! The game doesn't tell me what to do! This is BULLshit!"
"What the fuck, I can't catch these blue guys with the eggs, this is RIDICULISSS! The speed must be bugged or something! GREAT JOB, developers! Make an enemy I can't even catch!" (insert annoying cackle here)
(just barely misses a platform while gliding) "What the hell, are you SERIOUS? I LANDED that! N-Now INSTANT DEATH! INSTANT DEATH EVERYWHERE! ... and it puts me ALL THE WAY BACK HERE?! INSTANT DEATH, DO IT ALL OVER! Ever heard of CHECKPOINTS?!"
+LightningLion Man. That'd be crazy.
LightningLion yep. It's the dragon that complains about DR Shemp.
Phil _"I spawn, I die"_ Burnell, befouls yet another childhood classic
This guy is the WORST at EVERYTHING! Stop playing games if you can't even learn a simple control! X,X & O! Double jump and spin! Raging like a little kid I mean damn Phil, you're really pissing a lot of us off. It's still funny to watch you complain over and over.
At what he says around 1:05:04... Did no one comment anything to the effect of "We do this anyway Phil..."?
This is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long while. That epic rant is just completely insane. Hahaha.
Does Phil ever figure out the spin attack at all?
I replayed this game a week ago and I kid you the same thing happened to me at 43:26. It looked near identical that I couldn't help but laugh at myself for making the same mistake as Dave
you actually die instantly in sly cooper when you touch anything..
I laugh every time I hear Phil call someone an "elitist" there's so much irony it hurts.
There's a process to how Phil plays games. Don't listen, zone out, try to race through it, bitch about the game/developers, rinse repeat.
Salt x Mistakes + Rants = Pure Laughter
I know, right? As if that long-winded rant wasn't pretentious enough, he somehow manages to top it all off with a biblical reference.
Hey, man, Jesus dealt with a lot of pain, being cruxified and all that, but HE never had to poorly platform around and fight SPIDERS.
@@CaptainDoomsday Or, worse than that, INSTANT DEATH LAVA.
Yet another running theme of his.
"I can't get past this part" = "the developers are trolling"
I had no trouble with this game when I was what, 10 years old? And this 30 year old can't figure the first level out.
I would love to see how quickly he'd rage-quit if he played "Prinny: Can I Really Be The Main Character, Dude?" That is a hard freakin' game!
4:24 the fucking irony.
DSP: "I'm just trying to figure shit out for myself, cuz that's what I do when I play games, I figure shit out for myself"
and now you have the stream chat hold your hand through every playthrough now
"there's too many traps it's too intricate". Did I hear that correctly? I am in shock. jeez man
He probably hasn't played Crash Bandicoot yet.
41:16 Personally my favorite part. Couldn't stop laughing at his statements here.
HammettSHREDZ I know in a game, whenever I just go "screw it imma just look it up" and then see that it was super simple and that I passed it like 3 times I go "OMG I was such an idiot why didn't I think to do that" where as phil is "HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT"
This is a really well made "This is How You DON'T Play" video. Thank you for an hour and a half of laughter.
I could watch this man fail for the rest of my life.
I hate how the zoomer doesn't come to a complete stop when phil shouts ''DONT FALL!''. Obviously bugged driving mechanics. Not a single thing he could do about it.
I love how I played through this game in 13 hours when I was 8, and he's struggling on the basics.
Maybe because hes trolling
Love how Phil says his own balls taste like duty? The insult is ridiculous enough and makes no sense but then he just even completely fucks up his own fuck up both when speaking and while playing. It's truly almost amazing how bad he is at everything in life. This is why we watch, none of us could dream of being born horrible enough at everything we do that we can quite literally captivate thousands of people while doing it lmao. Phil is an American hero I tell ya lol. Suck at life, suck at job, suck at everything, still be an icon. Even if it is essentially as just a mockery of what every grown man shouldn't be 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
1:00:30 - 1:08:00 HOLY BUTTHURT BATMAN.
This montage was worth it just for his comment rant alone
Damn, the salt is real ladies and gents.
Now you've got me all excited. Hopefully, I'll be done with Jak 2 within a week so I can try it out.
"do you really want to see me repetitively die at the same part for 4 hours straight" as opposed to.....?
“50 of 50 Geyser Rocks.” lmao
He collected all (50) Precursor Orbs in Geyser Rock (tutorial level).
Dead Pool I know, but he still called it the wrong thing. lol
"What the fuck, he slid off the bridge" It's called snowy mountain, there is fucking ice which causes you to slip. Does this guy not understand basic fucking things
Lol, this guy's in his 30's and I was mastering this shit at 5. X3
It's really not a hard game. It CAN get pretty rough around the last third or so, but by then, you'd have thought Phil would be used to the controls.
Apparently not. :P
I've beaten this game at 13 within 2 days with every power cell, orb, and scout fly. To me, the last areas are a piece of cake. :P
Does the long jump within thirty seconds of playing the game in the tutorial
Never does it again
"God he's so slow"
"If I was a tiny bit faster I would've made it"
PROCEEDS TO LONG JUMP IMMEDIATELY AFTER SAYING THIS
dude stop making it look like it's impossible, I could do it when I was 10
