Since 12/5/23 in the Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time group on Facebook there have been 213 dogs and cats (155 dogs, and 58 cats) sick eating Purina, 57 of which have died. It seems to be from different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan being the most common. If you or someone you know is feeding this food, I would stop immediately! Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall.

Finding my 3 cats suddenly not willing to even taste the foods they previously liked - this has been going on with them over the past couple months. So, I agree, something is going on with these products !

As a VA in a conventional hospital, it is so, so difficult for me not to say something to clients when I bring them in and take their history. I’ve worked with integrative and holistic vets in the past, and embrace the wisdom I have learned at these places. So few conventional DVM’s in hospitals are thinking outside their University’s training which is promoting highly processed foods!! I get stern threatening looks and shaking heads from DVM’s I work with when I bring up the questions about the food. I gently bring up the food quality question our clients are feeding their animals, when the animal comes in with digestive/skin/ behavioral issues. Especially when the diagnostics show up all-clear. But they are adamant that raw and homemade are BAD! And that the Purina and Royal Canine & Hills are absolutely the only way to go to resolve issues.
It is very hard, because it is not my place to give my opinion.
The integrative DVM I used to work with years ago called kibble ‘cancer in a bag’.
The holistic vet I worked with? Top of the list during first consultations with clients was a nutrition consult!! The animals he saw were animals who were frequently on the slippery downwards slope with health issues - I was ASTOUNDED at the stories I heard about pets who were continuing a happy quality life years after treatment there, after previously being given the sad news from their Primary vet that nothing else could be done.

Here in Canada the Purina pro plan small bag is $30 with taxes! You can get Open Farm same size bag for the same price online with free shipping. I don't get why people buy Purina when you can get superior trackable ingredients non GMO pet foods from an ethical company..
Spoke to Purina myself. They have tested their PPP after all the rumors. Testing was fine. Please stop the rumors unless you have proof!

Dr. Judy, when you speak truth, people do attack. I have learned over the years that you just have to let people learn the hard way. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. I appreciate your wisdom. I have noticed a change in my dog food. I noticed some added chocolate colored food that was not there. What I noticed my dog would pull them out and put them on the floor. Then I noticed her itching a lot. She didn't have any of these problems before the last 6 months. So I started cooking my dogs food. She is 7 1/2 years old. Dr. Judy, some people are just dumb asses!

PLEASE keep up the fight!!! I appreciate you so much!!❤ My older cat has been experiencing bloody diarrhea overnight & my much younger cat is refusing their normal food. I just opened a new bag of Purina Beyond Simply! Stopping feeding it immediately! My dog was treated for vomiting in November. $600 vet bill with no diagnosis other than dehydration!!! I removed the Stella & Chewy's dinner rounds and he's been fine since. People are reacting in anger because they're afraid. I've completely lost trust in nearly all pet food brands. I try to feed the most premium food possible. Very picky cats who poo poo the highest quality brands. I called my vet this morning & they denied any report of food borne illness.

Thank you so much for getting this out to pet parents. I am so grateful for you. We need someone like you to stand up for us. A month ago our 2 yr old dog was having bloody diarrhea and was throwing up blood 😢. Got her to the vet and she had x-rays, blood work and iv and meds. Shes ok now, but i am feeding her homemade dog food and had Purina pro plan on the side. I just found out about this problem and threw it out right away. I thank God i heard about this. And thank God there are people like you. God bless you 🙏

I feed my Beagle the brand "Sundays for Dogs." It's not heat extruded kibble, it's air-dried and it is expensive. Thank you for raising awareness on this--SO important.
It's a good food but Open Farm is superior and cheaper as well.

Purina is hiding a deep, dark secret. Back in the 70s or 80s I was behind what looked like an old garbage truck in the San Joaquin Valley in California, smelled really bad,like death. I pulled up next to it & asked the guy what he was hauling. He said,roadkill & ufenized animals from dog pounds. I asked him what he did with them & he said that he sells it to Purina for pet food. It said Tallow works on the door. I stopped buying it. Looked it up and it says that they closed down but they probably moved or changed the name. PURINA = HORRIBLE, EVIL COMPANY !!!

My 4 & 1/2 yr old, very sweet Service/ESA Labrador Retriever backed away from her new bag of Purina (she’s been eating this kind for about a yr, along w/some vegetables, etc) This new bag looks & smells different, thinking the co. switched the ingredients. I have been adding more toppers to get her to eat it. She’s had loose stools & excessive drooling out of the blue! So I’ve cut the Purina in half & substituting more real food. I also gave her Milk-thistle for a few days now to try & detox her. My goal is to switch her to as much raw as I can afford. I’m going to go try & find something else kibble wise to switch her to as I make the switch to raw. Today her stool was a little better & no excessive drooling!
So I feel I’m headed into the right direction for her.

I sent my dogs lab results to Purina and they said that since I didn't have the bag with lot number there was no way to link the food to my pets illness, so they denied my claim. I reported them to the FDA. We were feeding ProPlan Large breed chicken. My dog ended up vomiting for days and eventually vomited blood so I took him to an emergency vet. It's been a rollercoaster ride.

I'm one of those people who grew up on a small family farm and my parents bought and believed in purina products and there were never any issues our animals were vet certified for meat milk and eggs, this was many years ago. Because of this I never gave it a second thougt when as an adult feeding purina. Now I'm kinda terrified. I've started feeding homemade slowly even though at this point my two girls haven't had any issues on purina, not raw but still homemade. I was wondering did any of those poor babies affected were caught early enough that they recovered. I can't get a committed answer from my vet except to buy their food and (lol) the first ingredient is corn, corn and corn. People need to just listen and weigh and make their own mind up, they just want to blame someone if they choose wrong. I've listened to several of your "rants" and I've just become more vigilant, thanks for your investigation.
I had a dog that was poisoned with pedigree that had melamine. She was 110 lbs so I called my vet and was told there wasn't anything that could be done. I wouldn't except that. So I researched and found natural solutions. It took 4 months to get her back to normal and she lived til she was 12 She was 6 at the time. After that and doing more research I went Natural with my dogs and myself.

Have always fed Purina, many, many years, many, many animals because they seemed to be the only group not to have numerous recalls. That has all changed now but not because of your videos but because of the experience of the last few months. I filled out your survey.
Dog was sick during the last week of November, vomiting, diarhea, two visits to the vet and three medications to get it to stop. No obvious disease, no fever, put her on chicken and rice diet for two week then eased back into her usual. Last week of December, she is sick again, same thing, more trips to the vet, more meds. By this time I had found the info on certain brands of dog food, which is what she was eating. Switched her to a grain free, no corn, wheat or soy and she is doing great. She is a lab-heeler mix, 10 years old. Not sure what is going on but certain there has been a change in the sourcing of ingredients for that dog food. Very disappointed.
I can not express enough just how EXTREMELY GRATEFUL I am for EVERY SINGLE POST YOU CREATE FOR US❣️ This is one that's actually got my SERIOUS ATTENTION!!! I had to switch foods because of Victor having a voluntary recall this other food which I'm 1/2 way through the 3rd bag and 2 of my Dog's suddenly refused to eat it which sent off huge alarms because they never refuse food. The one that's being fed is Stages Beef a 4 life dog food from Tractor Supply. I already changed the food. Judy YOU ARE MY SHERO!!! SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT POST THANK YOU MY PACK & I LOVE YOU ❤
This has been an issue for a very long time. People are not aware that if they allow their Veterinarian to "dispose" of their beloved pet after Euthanasia, that fluffy is sent to the rendering plant. Your horse is also sent there unless you have the $$$$ to cremate or bury. The foods are sprayed with fat to make them palatable and those fats go rancid and mold which creates aflotoxins that kill many animals; especially because of the way that pet food is stored for distribution--in NON climate controlled environments. Thank you for all you do, and all that Rachel does, and all the Facebook groups that put the word out. And then have a place for people to go to. They're grieving a loss of a pet due to something wrong with the pet food.❤ I was so lucky cause I almost started feeding my dog Parina pro plan salmon, but when I saw it had chicken in it and the food allergy test that I insisted that my vet due, even though they advised against it showed he was allergic to chicken and beef. So she then recommended blue, basic, which list everything that's not included and as soon as I switch to that from Royal canine hydrolyzed, his apples started working his antibiotic finally started working. He had been at antibiotic resistant to other kinds of antibiotics and his fur has grown back and he's doing so much better, I know I need to get them up the apical but thanks to all these groups. I'm trying to figure out how to do it. Thank you for all you do for all your doing.❤

I have some canned food that my dogs will not eat. I thought they were being picky. I looked at the cans and the brand is purina. I didn’t realize that, cuz it’s in the fine print. So I tossed that and gave them some different food and miraculously, they ate their breakfast! Thanks again!

Yes I remember the melamine scandal. I almost lost my elderly Cornish Rex to it. That was my first wake up call about what's in processed pet foods.
My puppy came to me on Purina pro plan on 12/20. I started her on raw the night she got home thinking it would be a 2 week transition process. She was totally off it in 3 days bc she just wasn’t choosing it. She basically transitioned herself and I just had to pay attention to her choices. I saw this warning first around 12/31 and I’m just like… thank god I found you and Dr Katie and Rachel first. I can’t handle another death. I won’t make it through another one anytime soon. Thank you for all you do.

I love how people bitch and moan about switching to raw food but they're willing to pay for constant vet visits because their animal is sick or pay for allergy medication because their pet is miserable. When you add up the cost of vet bills, medication, or think of the long term health issues that will arise from the toxic food, I guarantee you could afford raw food or make your own. Animals are supposed to be apart of your family so my question is, would you feed your kids toxic food?

There will always be people who think they know more or better, even though they are uneducated about the truths of the multi billion dollar pet food industry!! I am a retired Vet Assistant and KNOW alot of these companies sponsor Vets and Hospitals to sell their food, regardless of the potential health hazards from By-Products and other hazard ingredients. How many pet parents read the label and trace back the ingredients? In the US there are sadly countless factory farms, inhumanely swarming with diseased animals. Some of the by-products are from these animals...trace back to the farm and KNOW EXACTLY what is in your fur child's bowl!

All pet owners need to feed their animals Real Food and put these pet food companies out of business. Understand that it’s Only ever about the Money ! Stop the madness , our pets need real food just as we do. Buy chicken on sale, .79 a lb is cheap ! Sweet potato and a couple of bags of frozen vegetables isn’t breaking anyone’s bank ! Do the math, for an extra 20 or 30 bucks a month you won’t have to put a vets kid through college or on vacation,compared to a bag of kibble,because if you keep feeding garbage they’re going to get sick. If you can’t be bothered to care for your pets then don’t have them. There’s just so much information out there now on how bad these chemical laden so called foods are ! there’s no excuse people. These people emailing you are just plain lazy. They know they could be doing better and instead they rather attack you than do research on their own. Dr Judy, you have the patience of a Saint, I do not, I’ve been battling the real food/dog food with people for 20 years, lazy is all I can come up with, just pour that compressed cardboard into a bowl, I hope they don’t have kids !
Feeding raw is not even that expensive, at least here in the Netherlands i can afford to feed my middle sized dog organic ready-made meat with a benefit.
I only have 75 euro a week, and i have to buy everything for myself from that, including washing powder, dishwasher tablets, toilet paper, toothpaste and everything.
And then i have to feed a dog a cat 4 chickens and 2 snakes, including the bedding for the chickens and the snakes, all the snacks and other stuff for the dog, just everything.
And even with that i can afford to feed my dog raw in combination with a good quality cold pressed kibble. And my cat gets a good quality kibble too.
My chickens get a commercial brand chickenfood.
And my snakes eat mice that are 1.50 euro the piece, and eat one every week.
I buy 10 mice at ones, and thats 15 euro.
Its also what your priorities are.
Are you driving a expensive car, have some expensive subscription from something or whatever.
But what you are recommending unfortunately isn't a complete nutrients balanced dog food.
Because if you cook the chicken, you cant use the bones anymore, so no calcium.
Or you have to buy a expensive meat grinder.
There are no organs in a supermarket chicken, which they need the nutrients from.
this is o.k to feed sometimes mabey to save some money, but not for day in day out.

Dr. Judy…I just wanted to say I LOVE YOUR RANT. I have been feeling the same way. First off, if people have a problem with the information and want to continue feeding it until Purina finally does a recall..I am sad for your pets..but hey, you do you, boo! Scroll past. Thank you for all you do to keep our pets safe. It's always a choice….I CHOOSE to follow and heed your advice. Happy New Year to you and yours!

Thank you for all you do! If anyone followed you regularly, they wouldn't have questioned what you are doing and how you are informing the public. I only wish I had found that facebook group sooner, it has been a good source for first hand information from the pet owners themselves. ❤
