- In Ghana, there is an abundance of bamboo. So much so, that one company devised an unusual means of transportation: bamboo bikes. Crafting bamboo into bike frames, Boomers has made thousands of the sustainable bikes. Once finished, the bikes are said to be stronger and lighter than even steel. But there is much more to the company that just bikes. Boomers trains young people in rural communities and provides them with employment. With this enterprise, they are hoping to inspire others to get creative and to help their communities.

I saw how bamboo bikes were made on how its made in the west. They required so much labour and epoxy that it was more expensive and worse for the environment than a steel bike.
Anyway, good for these guys if they can live a better life.

Carbon bikes are made of carbon layers bonded with epoxy, though. You can look for metal lug bamboo bikes that is not new but existed in 1897 www.copakeauction.com/ws/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/DSC00726-1920x1184.jpg
Delicious Pizza carbon fiber yes, metals probably not. You can build frames from recycled metal. My concern would be long term durability. The rule of thumb for a carbon frame is in roughly 5-10 years it will need replacing, aluminum/steel depends on wear and tear but in theory could last far longer. Snowboard cores and skateboard decks are wooden and require replacement, depending on use, every few years or so for optimum performance. Therefore the energy and waste required to build a bamboo bike may be less but you will in theory need a new one every few years, meaning more have to be constructed and whatever epoxies or chemical additives need to be used will likely cause issues with the decomposition of these frames. In contrast, processes to recycle carbon fiber are currently in the works and have seen success on a limited scale. Still, neither CF nor alloy are “1000 times worse” than these are, as you suggest.
Delicious Pizza you still didn’t address the longevity of a metal frame vs a bamboo frame. If an alloy frame lasts 10x longer (I have alloy bikes from as far back as 2000 that I still ride and have stood up, the most recent of which is a DH/Freeride frame from the early 2000s, pretty much the ultimate test of alloy’s durability, since I beat that thing up in the mountains; while a hipster type cruiser bike could hypothetically last many years without needing to be replaced) then the process of building that frame will be less frequent, even if it uses more energy, chemicals etc.
@Milk2Percent It is not easy to come to a conclusion. When considering the sustainability of a product, you have to look at the life cycle of it. How much energy was used to make it? How was the energy produced? How long does the product last? How is the product recycled? Generally, cheaper items are most often also more sustainable. Especially when it comes to transportation. Steel bicicles are cheaper than bamboo. (I am not sure about those made in the video). Steel can be recycled at the end. If bamboo gets drenched in epoxy, it will never be recycled, but only burned. Epoxy is made from petroleum products and produces cancerous fumes, so it is not green at all even though the bamboo is. The energy required to make steel is very high, but so is the energy required of making bamboo. We cannot make a definitive answer without looking at the whole supply chain, and lifetime of a bicicle, but unless they make these bikes only out of steel and natural local resources, it will likely not be more sustainable than a steel bike.
This is brilliant I never thought of making bikes out of bamboo but it works. I hope this business takes off and eventually gets big enough where they could plausibly do a program where possibly every couple bikes sold maybe they can donate a bike to somewhere that needs it.

How shock resistant is bamboo? Is there a danger of the frame snapping in half if you hit a rock or a pothole?
I am not saying that this is the case, just wondering if they are as good as alloy frames.

There's some bamboo (tah-kay/竹) growing at the corner of my yard here in Japan. It's well known for its structural resilience. It's flexible, but strong. The roots don't grow very deep, either. I've seen videos of bamboo scaffolding being used to build skyscrapers in China and/or its surrounding areas. I'd be more worried about the joints snapping on the bikes, as beefy as they look.

We have done three different ISO test to test the durability of our bamboo bikes. Its weight is comparable to that of aluminum but much stronger than carbon fiber
