I'm not sure I quite follow, it's a 6v deck if I recall so should work on batteries or with a 6v power brick. I don't own it anymore but I have a feeling it was centre negative on the power brick but you would need to check the polarity of the power supply requirements otherwise you might destroy something. Batteries are you best bet for testing it, if it doesn't work on batteries you'll to take it apart and work out why it doesn't function.
Make sure polarity is correct, I think these units are centre negative, i.e. the negative is on the centre pin of the plug, not like most equipment these days which is centre positive. If you have reversed the polarity you may have damaged a a few components in the unit.
