- UNLV football has been horrible this century, but the 2022 team is off to a 4-1 start and head coach Marcus Arroyo has them peaking at the right time before conference re alignment. Today, i want to talk about why UNLV is a sleeping giant in college sports, how bad they used to be and the rise of the program this year, enjoy!

Fun fact: UNLV has one of the best club hockey teams in the country. They might eventually become a full-fledged D1 ice hockey program in the near future

-becomes one of the first bowl eligible teams in the country (first time UNLV has been to a bowl in a DECADE)

-finished out the season as conference Co-champions

Been going to UNLV games for 20 years, sitting in the uncomfortable trash bleachers at Sam boyd stadium. Now to watch this team actually win some games and play in allegiant stadium is absolutely incredible and something I never thought I'd see
Sam Boyd was a terrible stadium, nowhere near campus, when I was a student and they weren’t competitive at all there was nobody at Sam Boyd, maybe if they had a stadium closer to campus for all those years maybe they could have had a better shot at getting some hype around them.
As a UNLV fan it feels fun to watch the games finally. They feel different than they have in years pasr

There’s actually a pretty good amount of buzz here in Vegas around them. Of course they’re not matching the Raiders or even the Golden Knights, but people are actually talking about and supporting the program again

A lot of the best players I saw were on the unlv team. It’s just changing the culture. When I went to unlv as a freshman to work out with the older players. The culture was so bad. Players would not show up to lifts, fail drug tests, and have low GPAs. Coach Sanchez came in and helped changed the culture. Coach Arroyo brought in a pac 12 vibe by getting more strength coaches Under payroll and more coaches from bigger schools. They both did a great job of helping change the culture. Sanchez's effort didn’t lead to wins but he did make an impact on players' expectations of how to be a student-athlete. Coach Arroyo has a high football IQ. He will lead the rebels to Greater heights shortly.
I came in when the program didn’t have a lot to offer to my last year to be able to access a lot of resources. I’m so happy the program is getting better every year.

Blame Arroyo or staff. QB development is a continuous process. I get the feeling Bailey took everything he was taught from coach Heupel while at TN, came to UNLV and someone like Arroyo said, "that is all wrong, we need you to learn this way". LOL. Arroyo vs Heupel in QB development? No contest.. lol

I really hope UNLV is 6-1 by the time they play Notre Dame. The excitement among the fan base is growing after each win and beating Notre Dame will be huge for the program

Ducks fans always hated Arroyo, saying he wasn't aggressive enough, or at least that's what I remember them saying. When he first got to UNLV, I have to say I believed them...but now I'm stoked. He really does seem to be turning the program around. This doesn't seem like a fluke. UNLV is consistently playing hard, competitive games for the first time in my life

Broomfield is regressing. Looked horrid in the last game and frail. Arroyo isn't a QB whisperer or high developer and is clueless on how to progress Bailey, who ironically also looks worse after just being there for such a short time. UNLV is a proficient team against inferior competition but still waiting on them to play up to their potential against harder foe.

Dang, Bailey going to a program where I'm sure he thought he was going to be a lock at starting QB only to ride the bench.. Not to mention Bailey was the Number 3 Pro style QB from the 2020 class and Brumfield was the number 53 Pro Style QB....
I still expected Brumfield to start,especially after how he brought them back against Eastern Washjngton!
Brumfield is going to be a future first rounder so not much shame in sitting behind him

I have been a season ticket holder since 2020 season. It has been a fun ride watching them improve week by week. I expect we will have setbacks. The game against San Jose State is a good example of a setback. They have been battling back after setbacks. I expect a battle back this week against Airforce.

I find it very interesting that UNLV played at Notre Dame a few weeks after Notre Dame plays a "home" game at Allegiant Stadium.
Most UNLV games were home games for the opposing teams. Often the visitors had more fans than the home team.

The reason UNLV has not beaten a team above .500 is scheme. A good example for an offensive scheme or style is TN 2021.

I am a big fan of UNLV sports but not expecting football to ever be a BCS type team,maybe reach top 25,get to 9,10 wins but annually 6-8!

I can tell you why Arroyo took that job. Despite his success Oregon fans were fed up with his playcalling and were trying to run him out of town.
UNLV is improving and still should bet to get to 8 wins. Potential losses to AF and ND, than go on a 4 game win streak to end the season. Maybe some of these teams will get to .500 or better but all you can do is try and develop all around.

The future depends on the in state recruitment and making this a UNLV football town , I have condo over by the strip and my daughter goes to UNLV and if you didn't know where the school was you wouldn't know there was a football team . They don't participate with the youth football community in Nevada so the kids don't want to go to UNLV. At least make your home grown kids want to go to your school. It starts at home you can't recruit out of state when the other see you can't keep your own state star kids

Arroyo took what coach Heupel taught him and said, " That's all wrong".. Arroyo is limited on developing the QB's. I think Broomfield is just gifted but the last game, well. not so much. Good QB's play good against good teams and UNLV hasn't seen a good team yet. We'll see if Arroyo can coach beyond his past abilities to beat those teams. But Bailey isn't getting good coaching development at UNLV imo. Looks worse than when he got there.

My wish is that UNLV remain in the Mountain West, a very underrated conference
It's not underrated they will get smoked by low grade Midwest teams where football is life , the west coast is not a sports region so players don't take it as serious as there counterparts in the east and south regions , you can see by the youth football and high school level of play and camps , there is next to none on the west but there are hundreds in the south and east.

I've lived in Las Vegas long enough to have witnessed the UNLV Randall Cunningham era. Look Coach Arroyo has his kids headed in the right direction, and needs more time, help, scrilla and less "fair weather" fans to get his program to D-1 Elite status, but it certainly can be done with Coach at the helm. Look almost everyone in Vegas is a transient, rooting for a plethora of other schools making it difficult to build a solid fan base. That being said, if you're a Vegas, UNLV, and college sports fan, wherever your roots were, go back and RECRUIT! Talk up our school...(a top Hotel Mngmt school) we all s/b boosters and recruiters. Let's get behind Coach Arroyo and our young men and turn this bitch around...Just Win Baby!!!
The San Jose State loss is proof Arroyo hasn't learn much from last season. Getting blown out by a team that lost to nearly the worst team in the SEC (Auburn) is a little telling here. I know depth is an issue but the offensive scheme isn't a scheme that consistently gets receivers open. Plus having a QB that can deliver the ball is key. But you have to be able to develop your QB at a higher level to beat teams with more depth. This ability is not one of Arroyos. 213 total yards against SJSU is beyond terrible. You can't just pick a QB1 based on how long he's been in your system. A losing system. The O'line is so bad for opneing up holes for the running game, not many QB' s and running backs will have much success against the better team and SJSU isn't one of those better teams. Fifty-two yards rushing against SJSU.

The Tony Sanchez hiring really put the program back. They saw his success at Top of the Nation HS Bishop Gorman and thought it would naturally translate and that a local signing would be a good PR & recruiting move.
Too bad you can’t do the same exact things you did in high school and have the same results in college
