As a coach I have been extremely impressed with the vast majority of your videos and the simplicity and directness of your approach. I also agree with a good deal of what you are saying here, but it is less clear than your usual standards. What you are correctly objecting to is dropping the trail shoulder. I agree and for the reasons you identify. However, it would be helpful to distinguish between 'dropping' the trail (right side for right handed golfers) 'tilting' and 'side bending' These are all different. Dropping is just lowering; tilting is bending from the hip joint basically; in contrast side bending is a rib cage movement. We want right side bend; we don't want tilting and we don't want dropping. Be clearer from the outset is my only recommendation. and explain the difference among the three. I too prefer right side bend to occur as we approach impact, but there is nothing in side bend correctly understood that will prevent rotation; and so there really is nothing dramatically wrong -- even if it is not ideal -- with right side bend earlier in transition... I agree that we can think of side bend as a consequence of extension of the other side of the body -- both in the backswing and the downswing, but most of us are inclined to teach rotation in the backswing as involving left side bend and not as a consequence of right side extension; the former is the origin of movement, not the consequence. The reason we prefer right side bend late and as a result of left side extension is that were we to start with right side bend in transition or early in the downswing we can't guarantee that we will be left side extension as a consequence of it and we want that to complete a full rotation in balance, and also because we want to keep the left shoulder down early in the transition in conjunction with putting pressure into the ground on the left side. So in short, we want side bend, not tilting or dropping. While we may want it early in the backswing as an initiating movement, we don't want it early in the downswing -- though it is not a tragic mistake (as dropping or tilting are) -- because we (1) want to make sure we keep the front shoulder and hip both down and no closer nor farther apart from one another to start the downswing as part of controlling low point and ball then divot contact and (2) we want to make sure we extend the left side for purposes of completing rotation and creating a bracing move ( which will give us right side bend as a consequence), whereas if we start the downswing with right side bend there is no guarantee that we would get bracing, extension or rotation for free. At least that's how I would explain it.
Wow. Unbelievably enlightening light bulb moment for me (the notion of rotating without trying by using bends). Never heard it till you demonstrated it. So grateful for you. Thank you thank you!
I got an iron fitting recently on track man. when it was over we were going over the numbers. I saw that my path was 15 degrees to the right. when I asked the fitter about it he said it was because I have excessive right side bend at the start of the downswing. I do suffer from lower back pain
Excellent instruction - definitely no early Right Side bend. And this is the first time I heard a coach about Forward bending. Yes, the Forward bending is the Missing Link in golf instrucion.
Golf swing broken down to 2 simple moves. Excellent and clearly described as always JChown. Just need to seamless blend these movements in sequence. Job done.👍
I used to drop my trail shoulder by moving my head back in the down swing which also causes my left hip to move up all because i was trying to keep my head behind the ball, which I still do but just make sure to keep my head steady and centered
I was hitting balls with a launch monitor and video the other day and realized i couldnt achieve a negative aoa on a iron for the life of me. video showed the excessive trail side bend like you have shown, fat shots and no proper divots. great timing for the video !
Probably one of the best top videos of all time for me. Why hasn't anyone ever explained this to me before and i have watched thousands of golf videos.
You’re exactly spot on correct. They don’t show the angles that exposes this flaw. Rotation against a firm left side. As my left pocket (side) clears my arms drop (no over the top) and “chase” my perpetual left pocket. My finish is facing the fairway and around my body. My sole swing thought is “chase the rabbit.”
I should send this video to my current coach. He has been forcing me to side bend first and lower that right shoulder. My swing has turned into a hot mess over last month and I have repeatedly said to him that I feel like I can’t rotate. He told me to not worry about that. This makes complete sense. I so much time wasted on the wrong process
I’ve been watching your videos for awhile. You have transformed my golf swing in a very positive way. Can you comment on using your abs in the golf swing?
Good advice. My fault which naturally happens to me me when shallowing the club. I have to flip especially if I get lazy and make a poor or have the hands too low on the turn.
Please answer me one question. When you shift to the left your whole body goes with the shift thus getting ahead of the ball ( lunge). Sooooooo many youtube videos do the same. Yet, when watching pro's their head and mass stay relatively centred. Even with an iron. You can't find a video on TH-cam about "how to shift left without taking the whole body with you
I just realised I was doing this because I was trying to improve my chipping (I am terrible at chipping) which was often thin. Would be good to show a chipping video which highlights this could be a big reason why you sux at chipping. Also some drills on this and how to fix the mental scars from years of poor chipping due to this. Yes I still sux at chipping but slowly on the mend.
For what it's worth, chipping should involve far less movement and is much more about tempo, arms, and hands. Also, my mantra is always be accelerating through the ball. Soft backswing and faster (not fast) follow through. Also, no shaft lean, it should be very very slightly forward (like a fingers width) so that the the blade of the wedge won't dig in and the bounce of the sole is able to do it's work.
I am impressed how full swing flaws bleed into short game skills, as it is same swing flaw! Quick, out of top full swing? Likely quick, poor tempo chips & pitches.
It moves down a lot during the drill because it’s a drill. Also watch the best ball strikers, they all move down with their head in transition due to forward bending.
This one is really special. Left side bend in the back swing, then forward bend, then right side bend. This is one of those “why didn’t I think of this” moments… it even looks good on paper.
It's hard for me to keep the chest passive while the lower body rotates. Do you have any thoughts that might help with this? Whenever I try to rotate the lower body with the weight shift, everything seems to come with it and I get steep / over the top. Thanks!
All of this could be taken care of if you just said you need a negative attack angle to which you hit the ball first doing that will give you the shaft lean that you're looking for with your irons.
More to hit than just trying to hit down. All about how the body moves, which will create a negative angle attack. You can also hit down without shaft lead, hitting down doesn’t produce it.
That will result in a fat shot. You certainly can keep the face square, maintain the face being square in relationship to the arc. I’ve got plenty of videos on the topic

Excessive inside path is a huge one for why excessive right side bend is a no go!
This is why you are my favorite swing coach your swing concepts have made me a much better player!!!!!
This explains so much, why the more I tried to shallow the driver the more pop-ups I hit. Thanks!

Move the left knee toward the target & image “crushing a can” with the left foot in the transition in the downswing…works for me! 👍
That’s a great feel!
I used to drop my trail shoulder by moving my head back in the down swing which also causes my left hip to move up all because i was trying to keep my head behind the ball, which I still do but just make sure to keep my head steady and centered
Head centred is the way to go 👍🏼
Love your channel man great perspective on swing mechanics

Love that Kevin!
Great explanations! Thanks for this😊
Really excellent explanation of proper sequencing

Really love this video, explanation and instruction!
Thanks bud!
The drill makes good for me; neutral chest, & rotate, forward bend, then right side bend!
This is very good teaching. Thank U so much for this video.
Was that a hawk at (2:40) that came in and took some advice on the top of the fence?

Isn't all this "bend" talk just a relatively new way of saying maintain the spine angle (forward toward the ball) from address through impact?
I do not drop it down but I do setup with it a little back and a little down. This is to stop my pulls.
At set up is perfectly fine 👍🏼
Excellent swing tips
Hurt my back doing this exact thing. Forced the rotation and didn't realize I was dipping my shoulder. Instant feedback. 😂
Amazing video filled with solid advice
Thanks Jonathan, another great video.

Very well explained as usual😁. Makes perfect sense.
Thanks Andy!
Sweet..thanks man..keep up the good work
Excellent video
Great drill, thanks
Glad you liked it bud 🤙🏻
Really like this I just wish I can imprint it in my brain,it's a big issue for me this sequence
Thanks bud! Practice will imprint it 🤙🏻
Forward bend makes the head move down so much - perhaps too much head movement?
It moves down a lot during the drill because it’s a drill. Also watch the best ball strikers, they all move down with their head in transition due to forward bending.
So right thanks 🙏
Glad you liked it Marcus!

Great stuff mate!
What about Driver ? Loved this 👍
Left side extension from left arm parallel into the shot will help with hitting up with driver and create natural right side bend with driver
It's hard for me to keep the chest passive while the lower body rotates. Do you have any thoughts that might help with this? Whenever I try to rotate the lower body with the weight shift, everything seems to come with it and I get steep / over the top. Thanks!
Check out my channel. I have a ton of drills and feels for this 👍🏼
@@jchowngolf Have been doing just this this afternoon! Thank you for all the videos.
Narrow your stance & try that; hard to shift or sway
Excellent!
really like this one!
🤙🏻🤙🏻
Excellent.
very good!
If you try the down and around, you will hit some really weird and wonderful shots.
Weird at first, and then always wonderful haha 👍🏼
thank you. you have stopped me snap hooking

This lesson too good. Wow.
Finally some good advice
Do you swing the driver the same way?
This is why my back hurts thanks lol
Absolutely haha
@@jchowngolf went to the range and practiced this, then I started crushing it for a bit then fell back apart. Ugh
That fence needs some paint
⭐️
Just drop the arms and extend right arm. You cant square the face by just rotating the body.
That will result in a fat shot. You certainly can keep the face square, maintain the face being square in relationship to the arc. I’ve got plenty of videos on the topic
I'd give your fence a paint.
😁👍
Thanks Milorad!
