    The Boeing 737's reversers are deployable within 90cm from the ground . The pilot can decide to deploy them before touchdown in wet or windy conditions, so the aircraft has more breakpower at the beginning of the landing roll and avoid big bounces. He didn't do anything wrong, he won't get fired. He just got the aircraft, crew and passangers safely on the ground. Cheers from Brazil.

    • @ericlanegen
      @ericlanegen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      ooke2567 if you are that close you aren't gonna be able to go around without touching down first. And planes can do go arounds after reversers are deployed. The speed brakes auto deploy if reverse is engaged and the wheels touch the ground and auto retract when the engine is brought up in power from idle.

    This place is full of experts on everything. And I am one of them. Having studied the passengers' safety instructions of a 737 Iet me enlighten you lesser experts that there can be a case when actually flying backwards on reverse trust makes sense - namely when a cockpit window is damaged and it is not advisable to expose it to dynamic air pressure. In this case the view from a backward facing camera is displayed in the cockpit plus two rear-view mirrors are extended as a backup system (aviators love mechanical backups). In the beginning of the jet age they had a much simpler solution: One of the nine cockpit crew went to the starboard aft toilet and instructed the pilots via the intercom using a special peeping hole facing to the rear. i.e. into the emergency flight direction. That little porthole was normally hidden behind the " As a courtesy to the next passenger may we suggest that you use your towel to wipe off the wash basin.Thank you." sign in the toilet. Actually they have invented such a lengthy text to make necessary a sign big enough to cover the peeping window.

      Hmm.. I think you're right in that the lift generated by the rear-mounted thrust igniters could be useful under certain circumstances. However it's important to note that the horizontal stabilizer will not have sufficient time to get into its standard fully trimmed position. This can cause issues with the aft-cabin pressurization hydraulic fluids and in some cases could lead to a complete dual engine fan flameout.
      If you've noticed, on more recent planes the addition of sharklets has served to partially compensate for the aerodynamic drag generated by flaps, especially when the autobrake selector malfunctions. Generally speaking in such a scenario the first officer will call out the rotation speeds prior to having set the TCAS circuit breaker into the "standby" position, in order to avoid any possible complications arising from the GPWS's tendency to increase G-force loads on the yaw damper. Overall I'd say as long as the landing gear is fully functional, ditching could be feasible.

    As many people have pointed out Intentional selection of Reverse thrust in flight such as this is prohibited on the 737, if you were a 737 pilot you would know this as has been mentioned it is a LIMITATION from Boeing.
    A couple of reasons for this:
    Thrust reversers work independently of each other so you can select only one by mistake or you could select both but one might fail to deploy due to a system failure. Now you find yourself with massive asymmetric thrust at very low altitude. Not really a good situation eh...
    Secondly as soon as you pull the reversers the thrust levers are locked at idle, until the reversers are stowed again. Not a good situation if you suddenly encounter some windshear or sink and want a little power to arrest the rate of descent.
    Third you loose your option for to go-around as soon as you pull the thrust reversers.. A very bad idea especially on a very windy day like this when its possible to float or catch a gust of wind and be blown off the centreline at the very last second.
    The reason you can't go around after the thrust reversers are pulled is again because they work independently, should one fail to stow or you forget to stow one while applying thrust on one engine you have massive thrust asymmetry at slow speed... not a good thing!
    The Captain has the authority to disregard any limitation or rule if he deems it necessary for safety. However I don't see how that would apply in this case as if they had floated beyond the touchdown zone (hard to tell but doesn't seem to be the case) they should of gone around.
    If they were too fast again they wouldn't of complied with the companies stabilisation criteria and should of gone around.
    More than like this would of been flagged up in the DFDR monitoring system and the pilots would of been called in for tea & no biscuits to explain what happened.
    But what do I know I don't use MS flight sim

    • @tjarsun
      @tjarsun 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn't reverse thrust actually "suck" the plane to the ground due to the flaps position? By cutting the airflow under the wind it would diminish the high pressure zone there while slowing down the plane. Obviously it is not a safe thing to do unless it becames a last resort (because you don't get second chances) but I don't think you would be blown away by ground effect or wind.

      If the doors open they are mechanically linked to the baffles inside which redirect the bypassed air, so when they open you have idle reverse which is why there is little change in noise, apply more thrust and you get more reverse - but it's only the bypassed air which is reversed, air through the core of the engine doesn't change direction.
      However, I always thought / assumed that you couldn't engage reverse at all without the weight on the wheels ...

    I've seen multiple videos like this, and I have concluded that the reason for reverse thrust before initial touchdown is because since they are so low to the ground and suddenly stop descending (at 0:17), the pilots thought they were on the ground, and applied reverse thrust. Another incident happened with an American md-80 where they bounced, applied reverse thrust not realizing they bounced off of the runway, and then landed again.

  • @Giallo92
    @Giallo92 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Worth mentioning. Reverse thrust is more of an "optional" method of braking, only to provide extra stopping power when needed. This particularly helps when braking force is less effective, such as in rain or snow. Before landing, pilots will take into account the wind, aircraft weight, runway length, and any contamination of the runway (rain or snow). Based on this they will know what kind of braking force is needed and whether they should use thrust reversers.

    • @dyr_glpsn4209
      @dyr_glpsn4209 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is optional in the sense they could stop without it, but it's standard to use it on the dry too to protect your brakes a bit and avoid overheating.

    the most of landing is done by autopilot, especially in harsh conditions. And these conditions are not so bad, I've been through way worse. And my friend pilot told me if he wasn't sure he can land, he would never try.

      Inevitably you have to land at some point though. You can’t be in the air forever.

    This is classed as a very good landing by Ryanair’s standards!

      It was a very good landing, by a competent pilot.

    Every single time I've flown Ryanair it was like flying/landing with an acrobat pilot... it's unreal. Must be policy.
