I use big keyboards because I am compensating for something else in my life that is very small.

Originally I was mainly a fan of TKLs and FRLs, with one of my first boards being a Model F77.
Over time though I realized you get the same functionality with a numpad as a nav and personally I feel the whole nav cluster thing is redundant. So one day here I am looking at my F77 and thinking "I wish this thing had a numpad instead of a nav cluster, oh and maybe a XT column since that's something I like too." and I had the realization that this layout already exists with the Model F AT and it's surprisingly numerous clones.
I quickly fell in love with the layout and got used to it's quirks without much hassle to my surprise. AT keyboards are also kind of in a goldilocks zone for vints. A lot of them have the same high build quality and surprisingly flexible mounting (albeit with a steel plate) like XT and XT contemporary keyboards while also having a more modern layout and a large variety of switches with keyboards in the layout like later fullsizes.
I've had a blast collecting vint AT boards and I'm glad it's come back with the likes of the W1-AT, EE-AT and the Sui. Hopefully more continue to come out.
Oh yeah and I also like 1800s for a lot of the same reasons why I love the AT layout. Especially FRL 1800s.
Anyway recently I've seen a trend of more keyboards with numpads coming out in recent years so hopefully this trend continues.

Being in the vintage space, we're kinda stuck with oversized mammoths that take up a ton of desk-space.
I still find the extra keys incredibly useful for day-to-day tasks, but they can get pretty irritating when playing games. (Especially when using lower sensitivities for competitive titles)
Regardless, it's just a tiny gripe... The world could still use some bigger keyborts!

I think that one of the main reasons why people don't buy and use full-size boards is because they negatively associate those larger, and more mainstream layouts with ugly, badly built and awfully feeling cheap rubber dome keyboards.

Always wishing for more custom G80-1800 like the TX1800. The Brutal V2 1800 looks great but there's something about the extra row of nav keys that really gets me going.

you convinced me to get a 1800, is it viable to buy an Leopold FC980M for 100$ and mod it or is there an 1800 in that range that would be a better option ?

I have similar sentiments regarding having a separate numpad and the need for more numpad variety in the space. Having a separate numpad allows for more customization in regards to your keyboard set up. You can pair up a TKL and numpad to make a full-size. If you don't need the F-row then pair it with an FRL or 65% (with F-row on layer 1) with it and Bam, basically have the WindX. And not only that, you can run it southpaw without needing to buy a southpaw board. I personally use the Tenet70 + Freebird numpad for office work and it's been amazing because I can tilt both pieces independently for a more comfortable experience.
While I love my Odin, WindX, and Q5; I can't deny that the flexibility of saying "I feel like using my Suisei instead of the Tenet70 today" and not have it impact the functionality in my office set up is godlike. And now with a wireless option in the form of the Zoompad (hopefully QK makes one too), I have very few coworkers in the office who haven't asked me about getting a similar set up for their desks too. Also you can mix-and-match the colours of the keyboard and numpad for cool unique combinations

As a software engineer I have found that I am vastly more productive when my fingers never need to leave the home row. Optimizing a 60% with layers is actually *more* efficient for me. But I recognize that not everyone wants to run Emacs or Vim and never touch a mouse. I'm sure other people are more efficient with full-size keyboards. If you have the sad job of data entry then you're definitely going to need a full size keyboard. The great thing about having multiple keyboards is you can grab the right one for the job.

I just love how cute a little 60% is with WKL of HHKB blockers. My Arc60 is my daily and plateless it just feels incredible. With that said, an interesting looking 60% is hard to come by. At least with a bigger board you have room for interesting design elements on the top case and side profile.

Owning a full size, an alice and a tkl, my counter point is
    1. I don't use the numb cluster. Most people i know don't need it and when a gmk keyset cost 2 months of your salary, you don't buy it.
    2. Not everybody have the same hand range to do comfortably use a full size and a mouse. You put your board in the right position where the alpha is in front of you, your mouse is too far off to the right. You put your keyboard to the left, now you have to tilt your body a little to use it and fuck up your wrists, and when you need to use your mouse, you have to tilt again

I don't like real full size as a daily driver but I still love to occasionally pull out the IBM Model M and reminisce. Nothing compares to the feel of typing on buckling springs. But for work, 1800 and 96% are the magic layouts. I immediately picked up a QK100 because it has a full size 0. :')

  • @Rhienfo

As someone who is into resin, thank you for praying for me lmao.
I personally don't like full sizes because of how much I like using layers. It requires way less movement on my part and still has all the access that I need personally. My favourite layouts are a 60% and alice cause of split bs and rs which is basically a need for me on a board. I like how tkls look but both of those things look kinda weird on a tkl. I could bind tkl to |\ key and use it that way but it would mess up both tilde and esc on my board which I've gotten used to and prefer.
Aesthetically I also much rather prefer TKL over full size since I feel the numpad makes the board too lopsided to the right, same reason why I don't like 1800s. You would think that southpaw would fix this but I think it looks weird personally, maybe since I've seen too many full sizes so southpaw looks off cause I haven't seen many of those.
I do like the idea of having a numpad though, since they are the only things that layers can't really replace, it's just so much better than reaching for the num row, especially if you are doing a lot of stuff with numbers of typing them out. I would get a numpad separately but also the AT layout actually would be pretty cool for me since I like how it looks and It has the 60% cluster that I love using, it probably would be the largest layout that I could use purely for layout and not for looks. I tried the W1-AT but wasn't really the biggest fan so was thinking of eventually going for an IBM f-at, converting it and modding it to make it split bs and also full ansi (I remember seeing a gh thread about that, would also look into whether split rs would be possible as well for my precious layers)
In general I would like to get at least some larger boards even if they layouts aren't exactly what I'm looking for. An unsaver for example, I remember really wanting the parallax but coming to terms with that board never releasing (at least 21xx will be a thing, which I will definitely buy if I have the money for it when the gb happens.) and a g80-5000 or something similar would also be cool as well. Both those layouts are also great for resin which is a rip to my wallet lol ( my favourite layout for resin though is an alice layout because you have the three keys perfect for them)
Of course I do love seeing more full size customs, since it's a niche that needs to be filled, without having to wait for a while or hunting down for old kustom boards that would probably be pretty expensive nowadays and I do understand why people go for larger boards, layers aren't as accessible to people, whether it's reduced motor functions or just not wanting to deal with them, which in a hobby of preferences is perfectly fine but personally not for me.
    Really enjoyable video :)

My sole reason for not owning a larger board is that I have no use for it. I don't work in an office or any kinda setting where I would/could use a keyboard in my daily life So a TKL or 1800 would be pretty worthless in terms of value for me. I am a machinist by trade and I am in this hobby solely bc I have a large disposable income and I like the pretty colors and brain scratching sounds.

Main issue with most 1800s for me is the 1u 0. Just makes it so much more uncomfortable
I love having a numpad on the left though. I'd buy a southpaw if I could get it with a proper split spacebar, 1.25u key on the left, 2.25/2.75 or whatever it doesn't matter to the right. Unfortunately this doesn't exist. The only somewhat well-known board that can approximate this is the SPV-111, which fucks up the spacebar layout, has a right-handed numpad even though it's on the left (???), and is solder-only (mostly not an issue, but I rebuild a lot more than I want to solder

Trouble is there aren't many big boards available, at least at reasonable prices. QK and Zoom have their big boards but are full of memes. Keychron QX boards are ass, the cheaper ones are good but not on the level of nice customs. Shipping prices are a significant amount ($50+ from vendors like Novelkeys and Geon) which could have been a nicer keycap set or switches, hell even another board, not to mention import fees and tax.
Can't even get a full size or 1800 Leopold in stock in the UK, best you can do is get a filco (which are very available in the UK unlike leopolds) or a keychron K4/V4/Q5/6/12.

I've never gone smaller than an 1800 until the Cycle7 because of what you said about fully utilizing a keycap set. Such a waste to see those F keys and Numpad keys just collect dust. I'm really hoping I'd like the FRL layout though but still really hoping for more options and innovation on our big bois moving forward.

Even though I fully agree that a base set should include a numpad, that argument does not hold up when you say you have a box full of numpad keysets that's currently not being used. The race to the bottom will always win and when 99.9% of customers don't need it, vendors aren't going to include it. I suspect Geon's $79 GMK set will also not include numpad caps and just be TKL kitting.

  • @Alexander_Lawson
    @Alexander_Lawson 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I agree that unfortunately right now, there isn't as much interest in big/long bois, but I REALLY would want a cycle or neo-esque priced actual full-sized board. I know that prebuilts exist, and nothing wrong with Leopolds or anything comparable, but it would be really fun to have an actual full-size in the custom keyboard side of things.
I know the Zoom109/full-size is... still supposed to happen? But I dunno if it'll be cycle or neo-esque pricing-wise (yet still delivers in terms of sound and maybe even looks).

I truly feel sorry for everyone that has to move their hands while typing.
Whenever I have to use to a normal keyboard, my hands immediately hurt from just having to reach to backspace.
Having to move your hands for arrow keys is also so incredible inefficient.
It honestly blows my mind that despite having QMK firmware most people in this hobby are still willingly to deal with this.
Btw. it's also almost impossible to type with 10 fingers without having split space.
