I mean, wapol's drive is pretty simple. He's a vain proto-'celestial dragon'. He didnt go after Hiriluk for any practical reason. Its just that he said "no doctors" and here was a guy saying "I'm a doctor". Thats really all there was to the 'plan'.
Wapol hook isn't sadism of greed, it's control. Wapol want to stop Hiluluk because he goes against his view of his kingdom. It's also the reason he had against Dalton
I think that's a good take and that's also shown in his fight where even in his home everything goes wrong like Nami stealing the key to his ultimate form or his BFG getting clogged by birds. It's one of my favourite fights actually.
Honestly this series has quickly become my favourite out of all the content you put out man, the day you'll cover the last villain will be a sad day for me
7:08 it's actually a very good reasoning. It would be a smart idea to leave Hiluluk alone, in any other political system. But Wapol is a king in an absolute monarchy, letting anyone ignore the ban will diminish his power, since rule of the monarch is highly dependent on total obedience. In addition, a lot of monarchs in real world have made similar choices.
Since Wapol had seen Imu and Five Elders of their monstrous forms, he will have to throw his lot in with the Revolutionary Army where he can provide them a base, funding and also telling Monkey D. Dragon and his Captains of what he saw. Plus Sabo backing him up since he too saw the true nature of so-called leaders of the World Government up close.
To think Wapol's survival is important as without Wapometal, Franky wouldn't be able to build his creations like General Franky mecha without that special alloy.
I mean sure but thats more of a fun fact than a requirement. Its not like its essential for the fictional robot man has to have the fictional metal to build cool robots it is neat an old villain has inadvertently helped the heroes multiple times now.
@@m.a.dmatt6689 I can’t wait to see the story of how he stumbled his way into saving Vivi and becoming Morgans’ accomplice in the anime. Seeing as Sabo is about to explain what happened during Reverie, I’m going to assume that Wapol’s side of it is coming too.

If Franky ate the Munch-Munch Fruit, he'd be able to eat random metals and make his own special metal: the *"Frankalloy!* To use them in making his creations a lot tougher and cooler.
Walpol attacking Hirluk makes a lot of sense. Walpol doesn’t give a shit that people hate Hirluk. He wants complete power via monopolizing medical care. Oda is showing the self-defeating nature of being power-hungry. He would be better served to let Hirluk go, but he can’t give up that control. And his incompetence underscores this. He’s like a CD w/o admiral protection. An entitled brat who’s good at being evil, but not super good at being scary.
Watching Drum island for the first time, i had no issues with Wapol as a villian. If anything he was very compelling compared to past villians. It was such a wild devil fruit compared to the others we have seen come before.
Wapol is tight lipped about what he saw at reverie but my theory is Morgans threatening to kick them out of the blimp and wapol very reluctantly spills the beans about Imu to stay on board .
One thing I think might have influenced Wapol’s decision regarding the doctors was Vegapunk. Vegapunk was 500 years ahead of the rest of the world and is enough of a humanitarian to give his research(after it’s been paid for) to the world for free, something that could have threatened the drum island’s tribute to the celestial dragons which probably consisted of doctors and medical research or the money such things bring. Wapol couldn’t oppose the government or the dragons, but he could bleed his people by controlling the doctors. As for hiriluk, he was calling himself a doctor and could’ve destroyed Drum’s reputation through his quack practises.
Luffy climbing the mountain while carrying Nami and Sanji is one of the most brutal moments in the entire show imo. Especially the anime makes it such a bloody scene. I believe it's episode 83, very well worth a rewatch.
This video came at a fitting time considering the latest news regarding the Live Action S2 The Live Action S2 is currently mentioned to cover up till Drum Island, meaning Wapol needs to (somehow) serve as a fitting villain for the end of the season
I love this channel. It makes me sad when I open TH-cam and I don't have a new episode of GLR. I NEED daily episodes sirrr. Thanks for your time Liam! 😂
Wapol's backstory makes perfect sense to me. He's a violent narcissist. Dr. Hiriluk's crime wasn't that he was practicing medicine, but rather that he was taking the attention away from Wapol. He was also working outside the system Wapol created, which meant Wapol couldn't take credit for it. You even see shades of this narcissism when Wapol abandons his doctors to die. In his mind, those doctors aren't even people, just things of which he can get more. Why should he care what happens to them?
Exactly my thoughts! I don't think Liam "gets" Wapol and that's a shame. He's one of my favourite villains exactly for this reason. It's also very interesting to see how this narcissistic sort of evil is made almost harmless in comparison to much more potent villains.
Wario starts out as an evil, greedy glutton antagonist. After some defeats, he eventally manages to found a very prosperous and profitable videogame company. He also has a canonically translucent mustache twirling evil brother who despite barely being seen anywhere, people seem to recognize him more than Wario himself. I wonder now if Wario will at some point find out by pure chance that Peach is actually a world-ending threat kind of villain that has been pulling the strings all along.
Sadly the Drum Island Arc never was about Wapol. He was just a tool for all the information we got in Drum. - Luffy's first Wanted Poster of 30,000,000 - Wapol was the first King we came to know - first mention of Blackbeard and his group - Luffy says there are people in the world that don't sleep (Blackbeard Characteristic we lerned 800 Episodes later) - we lerned about Zoan Devil Fruits and they're limitations - the giant Mountain with the Castle at the top mimicing Mariejois - a kingless Castle where Kureha took resident, forshadowing Imu - the 20 Doctor's as a stand in for the 20 King's - a first look into the World Goverment and the Reverie - Gold Roger actualy being Gol D Roger - the first mention of the Will of D - first mention of Ace and his hunt for Blackbeard - we got a new Crewmate in Chopper and lerned his backstory This Arc was all about world building. And Wapol was just a means for that. If anything his whole character is a 1 to 1 blueprint of what the Celastial Dragons are.
Even though being able to eat everything sounds cool being constantly hungry all the time would be awful. Walpol is my least favorite villain and hopefully Foxy who is the best villain will be next.
I think Wapol is a prototype for Blackbeard. They are both hippo-like people with a devil fruit power to consume anything. Though obviously Blackbeard is a much more competent villain.
Shame that we will never know the name of Wapol's favor. For a guy who's a good king beloved by the people of Drum Island and well regarded by Dalton, Oda never gave him a name. I bet his name would be Ivan contrasting bizarre names of Wapol and his non-canon brother Musshuru.
I know this sounds crazy but since one piece arcs mirror themselves to future arcs, Walpol is going to be a near copy of Joyboy. A king/prince then pirate and wanting to be king again? That could be a close facsimile to Joyboy, we know Joyboy was from the ancient kingdom, don’t know whose it’s king was or royal family (maybe his lineage),become the first pirate and had a dream to become king….again? There are more parallels like knowing the truth on who runs the world/seeing the empty throne filled
You missed the point of Drum Island. The main threat is Nami’s Illness, not Wapol. He is greed personified and despite being weak himself, uses the tools of government to exert power, by controlling the doctors, similarly to Stalin. It is one of my favourite arks, and that is helped by there never being a pretence that Luffy would not be able to punch him hard enough. Dictatorships control key things like healthcare, education and Money to keep power and prevent rebellion. He shows how important ruler is, independent of their individual ability to win a fight in a series where that is usually the defining ability.
My headcanon as to why Wapol went after Hiriluk had everything to do with Wapol's arrogance in not allowing anyone to go against his decree about the expulsion of doctors. The idea of using Hiriluk didn't even enter the picture. His yes men would never offer suggestions while Wapol thought himself right.
Pls can we get a continuation of the arc review series? Or another arc ranking? Really enjoyed the first series. Love this series, maybe akainu or bellamy next pls?
I know a lot of people hate Wapol, and rightfully so... Thing is, I kind of love him? Maybe it's his design or how stupidly childish he is in how he lords his status as king over people (so childish is he that Vivi was somehow even more mature than him in a flashback, even though she was a literal child), but I really got a kick out of him in the Drum Island arc. He's not AS funny (nor as charismatic) as Buggy is, but I still felt he was a riot. His inherently goofy Devil Fruit helped, too; the Munch-Munch Fruit might be one of my favorite Devil Fruits just because of how inherently silly it is. It's strange, though, I genuinely expected to be done with him after his cover story and when he was confirmed to be be the king of the Black Drum Kingdom after the timeskip, yet somehow, in some way, Oda has plans for this guy in the final saga. Being one of the few people who knows the truth behind the World Government (by accident no less) means he has little else to turn to, now that he can't go back to being a king after finding this out. I know a lot of people hate that he's going to be here for the final saga, but I, for one, am I all for it! Also, Wapol looks MUCH older than he actually is, he's 27 in his debut and 29 after the timeskip. His face and body make him look middle-aged at least.
I find it amazing that characters who didn’t seem like a big deal or who wouldn’t have a impact on the story, make a huge comeback and are still relevant to this day.
Regarding your two options stated in the video, well there is some logic to them. The true reason he wanted Chopper's mentor was because he wasn't happy knowing that even the smallest of medical help was available to his subjects. He had to control them all Even if it was a bad doctor.
I think Wapol fails most as a villain because he never once comes off as a threat in Drum Island. He’s bumbling, goofy, idiotic, and generally harmless. He sets a couple houses on fire, but then mostly concerns himself with kicking Kureha out of the castle, which he entirely fails to do. He only has two crew members, who were utterly weak and soloed by freaking Chopper. The only reason there was any tension at all is because the entire crew except Luffy were either sick or lost for the entire arc.
There was another comment in the thread that said, “the main antagonist of Drum Island wasn’t Wapol, it was Nami’s illness” and that sounds about right
Yay! I love love LOVE king Wapol, his introduction being him out-weirding the strawhats by eating their ship and other things. Coming back to his kingdom finally and just wrecking everything and everyone, at times i was captived by his elegant way of speaking (tho i guess that depends on the translation huh) as im reminded "oh this is really a king". I do find his relation to Dalton quite interesting, he's very trigger happy with those who oppose him, yet he locked Dalton in a cell for a while demanding an apology in an mocking tone. Maybe its because as a vassal he hadent lost his value yet or the people of drum island adored him so much but any sense of "mercy" from a character whos so sadistically cruel toward everyone always catches my eye. And his fights were he just threatens to eat people alive is just so unhinged hes just so crazy i love him, even ate himself alive good lawdy
Bro works with Netflix. Last time when Mr. 3 casting was announced he gave us the vid about him and now we know Wapol is the main villain of live action season 2 he uploads this one
And island called drum, with what looks like huge tree trunks, used to be a highly advanced medical facility and known to have a mushroom that heals anything and joyboy creates drum music. There’s something there
I loved Wapol for how it showed what power does to people. Wapol’s crazy actions make complete sense to me as they serve to increase his own power over others and punish those who don’t recognize his power
i yhink the reason wapol targeted Hiriluk is because hiriluk was disobeying his mandate that all doctors would be under his control. He only cared because it indermined him and that is unacceptable
A theory I had back during MHA's run that was "the quirk influences the behaviour/habits of the person." Mainly looking at Toga's and Stain's quirks. I wonder if it's true in One Piece as well. We know some devil fruits have a will. I wonder if Wapol was a fine person at one point, then ate the fruit that is pretty much the embodiment of gluttony. This could have either altered his brain chemistry to always want to eat and thus made him impulsively greedy.
The munch munch fruit is the most underrated fruit, imagine it in the hands of someone with competence. He could have a full form based around being a bladed human because of what he ate, fingers as muskets to add extra variety
He’s like a gag antagonist placed in a serious arc and I appreciate that he’s underwhelming because he highlights other antagonists by comparison such as black beard. 7:44 I see it as the law is the law and defying wapol at all is punishable.
One thing I'd noticed with Wapol compared to practically every other One Piece villain is that he never has the upper hand in his arc. He and his crew just get their asses kicked everytime they get into conflict, with the only real damage they deal is getting tribbles stuck to Sanji for a bit.
I like to imagine that wapol was already a big glutton before he ate his devil fruit and that he actually ate his devil fruit on accident during one of his eating sprees.
Walpol was the prototype for all of those arcs we got after that where the Strawhats had to over throw some kind of evil dictator. He was fine for that time, because the formula wasn’t already over used by that time. Walpol was easily hateable and he had a freaky power and that was all he needed to be for the simpler arcs of that time. He wasn’t too boring because of his design and power but he also didn’t distract us from the epic background story of chopper and Luffy trying to find a doctor for Nami. In my opinion he was perfect for that arc and making him a gag character after that is honestly the best you could do with him.
Wapol could have possibly was a red herring to the true threatening idealogical and menacing hippo villain Who also wanted to be a king and make his pirate island a kingdom
Interesting because I always took Wapols thematic opposition bearing more to authority vs freedom which framed this ways fills out more of the hollow points pointed out in this analysis. Thus is the first dictator like villain we have encountered in the series and kind serves as a soft side celestial in my eyes.
I mean, wapol's drive is pretty simple. He's a vain proto-'celestial dragon'.
He didnt go after Hiriluk for any practical reason. Its just that he said "no doctors" and here was a guy saying "I'm a doctor". Thats really all there was to the 'plan'.
Yeah. Liam says Wapol is inconsistent but he is actually consistently short-sighted. That's his major flaw that drives his actions.
Wapol was also running a monopoly.
A Doctor running around doing things (poorly) for free was a threat to him making money off people in need.

I’d really like to see a Caesar Clown video!
Bro works with Netflix. Last time when Mr. 3 casting was announced he gave us the vid about him and now we know Wapol is the main villain of live action season 2 he uploads this one
this is great timing, cause I'm wondering how they are going to make wapol compelling enough as the final antagonist for opla season 2
Wapol is S2 final villian
And island called drum, with what looks like huge tree trunks, used to be a highly advanced medical facility and known to have a mushroom that heals anything and joyboy creates drum music. There’s something there
I hope Wapol with his toy empire are working on toys that float and can go underwater
It was still cool to see him having two devil fruits in movie 9, even before blackbeard
Video 410
I love the videos and I hope your day was great. Keep up the great work.
I loved Wapol for how it showed what power does to people. Wapol’s crazy actions make complete sense to me as they serve to increase his own power over others and punish those who don’t recognize his power
PLEASE JUST MAKE A VIDEO OF MY GOAT LUCCI PLEASE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR IT SINCE THIS SERIES BEGAN PLEASE
I love this series!
I’m ready to see the video and tier ranking for the original corrupt/evil Marine, Axe-Hand Morgan.
I really want to see my boy smokie in a vid
I love that Wapol represents the concept of private property described on Marx's works
i yhink the reason wapol targeted Hiriluk is because hiriluk was disobeying his mandate that all doctors would be under his control.
Wapol is constantly very hungry, so he must be very irritated all the time -> thus why the inconsinstence of his character
Just one last video before I go to bed. And grandline uploads a new video 😮
Oooo boy you picked the day to upload this, since it seems that Wapol will be the main villain for season 2 of the live action.
nothing better than a video about the big bad villain of the one piece live action season 2
Waiting for something to happen…
Incredible timing. Wapol was just confirmed to be the final villain for s2 live action of One Piece
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤
I really hated Wapol a ton. He was so annoying in the drum island. Still can’t get over the fact he has done more than Dragon
youre my favorite internet man
USSOP WILL BECOME THE GOD OF OBSERVATION!!!!
Isn't he already one??
Wapol devil fruit powers is so common nowadays. Incidentally, just yesterday we had Dazai vs Gluttony in Isekai Shikkaku
Ngl live action Walpol saying "I like my houses well done" as his minions set fire to a village would be sick af.
I think we've got the biggest change for the reboot
amazing video
Wapol could have possibly was a red herring to the true threatening idealogical and menacing hippo villain
Who also wanted to be a king and make his pirate island a kingdom
Interesting because I always took Wapols thematic opposition bearing more to authority vs freedom which framed this ways fills out more of the hollow points pointed out in this analysis. Thus is the first dictator like villain we have encountered in the series and kind serves as a soft side celestial in my eyes.
