We bought the Lectron Vortex and had the difficult to disconnect issue. Since we plan to carry an adapter in each car we may give the A2Z a try. I like that it comes in a padded case. Thanks Tom for the valuable info!
Last Friday I was at the Tesla Supercharger in Wisconsin Dells when a Rivian R1S and Ford Mustang Mach-E stopped to charge using the A2Z NACS to CCS1 Adapter. Both owners had trouble getting their adapter to lock so they could continue to charge. In light of the new development that you are reporting on today with the release of their Gen 2 product, I would highly recommend that A2Z reach out to their customers and offer them a free upgrade of to the new and improved Gen 2 adapter.

This maybe true but I think the onus is on A2Z to reach out to their customers whenever possible to inform them of such situations where they offer a free upgrade to an engineering defect on such a critical charging component. Just ordered ours less than a week ago quickly went to check if it was a Pro and luckily it was. Can’t wait to receive it. Thank you for all the information you provide.
This solves the biggest problem i have with the other adapters by default. With the other adapters, someone could unplug the NACS handle from your vehicle and cut the charging session early. With this change, if your vehicle has locked on to the adapter, the adapter will be locked on to the NACS handle in a way that can not be messed with externally.
Thanks Tom, great to see A2Z being very progressive in continual improvements to their design and your resulting review shows how good this newest version adapter really is!
Glad you posted this! I've ordered one of these new PRO models. Of course, I won't be able to use it for quite a while, but I want to be ready when my EV is finally given the Supercharger green light.
Hey Tom! Love your videos my friend as always! One quick note. Tesla supercharging can be stopped by pressing the round circle on the NACS plug (you would use this button to open the charge port on a Tesla vehicle). This is how I stop charging sessions and it works great! Now if we could get that button to open and close the charge port on other EVs the experience would be perfect 😀
Stopping charging from pressing the button on the NACS handle means pressing the little dot on the Supercharger handle. That safely ends charging before unlocking the adapter.

I thought it odd that the two stage release trigger released the NACS cable secondarily, even though it should be disconnected first. The video shows Tom compensating by getting a good grip on the adapter to keep the connection to the car while removing the cable.

Hey Tom just wanted to let you know I will be using your coupon code to purchase the new ccs Nacs adapter typhoon pro. Thank you very much. I appreciate you
Thanks for the review and tips. Really looking forward to using the A2Z Typhoon Pro and using the Tesla Superchargers. That will really help with my travels.
I'd really like you to see a review of either an adapter or an EVSE that is of poor quality so you can actually show us the issues of getting a cheap knockoff online.
While the new latch mechanism is a slight ergonomic improvement, it seems that the Typhoon Pro latch design forces the user to remove the CCS end first, which is the opposite of what UL2252 says to do. I'll stick with my Lectron Vortex. Removing the NACS plug with the adapter securely attached to the car gives much more ergonomic position, and avoids the awkward task of removing the NACS plug from an unsecured adapter which could be dropped if it's tight and releases suddenly.
Ordered the combo of the Pro and the J1772 adapter as soon as I took delivery of my MME Rally. Also requested the official adapter but that is estimated to get here in October.
Thanks for the review. Just got notified by Ford that my complimentary adapter has been pushed to September; originally, was May. So... ordered the A2Z Pro adapter. Used your discount code. :-)
I ordered a A2Z first of July, then saw the pro the next day. I was hoping they would ship the new version, but I just received the V1. Oh well I like the V2 design better.
So I have a Honda Prologue. Do you think I will be able to Tesla charge when GM vehicles are authorized? I ordered the Typhoon Pro using your discount code.
I also have a Prologue and about to order the A2Z Typhoon Pro. Have you received yours yet? Can you confirm that it works on Tesla Supercharger? I read that you need to set up the Tesla App Vehicle to Chevy Blazer EV. I setup the app with the Prologue, the Supercharger close to me did not show up. When I changed to Chevy Blazer EV, it did.
@@jeffthomas7383 Yes, I received the A2Z Typhoon Pro adapter. I confirmed that I can charge at the Tesla Supercharger stations available to the Chevy Blazer platform. I did just as you did: I set my vehicle to 2024 Chevy Blazer. The Supercharger down the street appears available. I went over there, plugged in, and initiated the charge in the Tesla app. I was at 32% SOC and was able to pull 130 kWh. I went to 50% in 8 minutes. One thing - make sure you read the instructions for the adapter. They specify that you plug it into the vehicle first and then plug the Tesla cable into the adapter. When finished, detach the Tesla cable first (you must click the adapter release button). After detaching the Tesla cable, you can then remove the adapter from your car.
A2Z is telling me that my priority order is on hold now while some changes are being made. I originally ordered the first version that was delivered as the PRO version was being announced.
Since you have contacts inside Tesla, can you ask why the adapters are not being shipped for Ford vehicles? If I am not mistaken, it has been a couple of months since anyone received adapters. It's hard to tell, there's 37 pages of discussion over on the Mach e forum about this. There's a phone number on the order site that says you can call Tesla and ask about the status of your order, but from what I read, when people do they are just being told there is no update.
I got mine as promised but yet to ever get to use it on my bolt. Now it’s 1st gen already i now feel like I’m behind. I feel like the peasant of adapters.
I have the original A2Z NACS to CCS1 adapter and I am happy they improved the design with the pro but also a little annoyed with how quickly it came out. Kind of feels like I just purchased a prototype, especially since I do have the issue with the NACS latch Tom talked about. On my unit the latch works thankfully but it’s very tight and a little hard to get it locked in.
One word of caution on using third party adapters. I have the original A2Z Typhoon adapter and I have used it about a dozen times with my R1T. The last time I used it, I received an error in my truck stating "Charging speed slower, Warm plug detected". I was only able to charge up to about 50kW. Ambient temperature was about 60 degrees F. I unplugged and re-started the session and I was able to charge at full speed. But then I started to get the error on both EA and RAN chargers. Initially I could just restart the session to get full speed, but eventually this stopped working and I am now only able to charge at about 50kW on all CCS chargers. My R1T is now in service being repaired. The service center did not explicitly state that it was caused by the A2Z adapter, but they told me not to use a third party adapter in the future. They stated that the repair my cost as much as $5,000. They are covering the repair under warranty for me, but I imagine that in the future they may not.
Hi Micheal, This is very unlikely that the adapter caused this. We are very interested in knowing the outcome of your situation and repairs with Rivian. Truly, this is the first time we hear something like this despite having ten’s thousands of adapters being used worldwide everyday. We have sent you an email. Thank you.
The previous version of the adapter (and the official Tesla adapter) instructed us to put the dispenser plug into adapter BEFORE plugging into the vehicle. The claim was for safety. So I don't understand why they're now instructing us to plug the adapter into the vehicle BEFORE putting the dispenser plug into the adapter? Why was it not safe in the first version of adapter but now is? I assume they've made some technical change, but would love to know the details.
Just got the new Typhoon Pro adapter today, 8/15/24. Will be using it with my Rivian. I ordered it the same day it became available to order, July 6. (Thanks for the coupon code!!) Mine indicated it shipped on 8/5/24 but in actuality, that was the date the label was made and it didn’t really leave the UPS facility until 8/9/24.The exterior box was pretty beaten up and it didn’t come in the white box you got but it was in a form fitted travel case and appears to be in good shape. It still has the exposed screws yours has-no rubber coverings as you mentioned you were told it would come with in your video. Does that mean I got a preproduction version like yours or did they decide not to cover the exposed screws? Also, the instructions have a caution note “Always safeguard the NACS to CCS1 Adapter from moisture, water, and foreign objects…”. Does this mean you shouldn’t use it in inclement weather conditions? I would hope they only mean not to expose the connection points from moisture and that it would be a sealed unit while charging. Thanks for all of your videos and reviews. They are extremely helpful.
Have used the gen 1 A2Z over a dozen times with Rivian including in 95 degree weather and in full sun and had no issues and charging at peak R1T rate around 217kw. Once you’ve used the lock a couple times it’s second nature. Like seeing a pro model, but see no reason to upgrade.
Thanks Tom for the information on the A2Z pro I will be purchasing one when VW decides to go with Tesla Chargers. Do you have any Idea when that will be?? Thanks again
So my Ford adapter just got pushed back to 1/2025!!! I ordered in March of 2024. Very disappointing. Do you have any info on this latest delay?? Thank you for your great content, love your channel!!
I have the 1st version and should get my free Ford/Tesla adapter in a couple weeks. Like many of your viewers I got the A2Z because I wanted to do a long road trip and my favoured route had Tesla Chargers and nothing else (Valemont, Clearwater BC). I now go to a Tesla Charger to warm my battery while getting a coffee before going on a L2 at work. I will try plugging the adapter in first next time but I always use the disconnect button by the charging port to end the session. BTW, thanks for your videos, excepting yourself, nobody explains this stuff very well. Just wondering if you'd do OBD adapters and Apps. I have a 'Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth 4.0' and use CarScanner on my iPhone and I use that to monitor my HV and 12v SOC and other aspects like battery temperature. Doing that I have had issues with my 12v battery and discovered I left an Air Pump plugged in my USB port in the back :D. It wasn't the scanner (which has a low power mode) but now I'm being a bit careful and now there is a 'battery protection' mode on my 12v in FordPass which seems to help. Some discussion about 12v systems might be cool.
at 14:26 - NACS (Tesla) handle has a button to stop charging as well. its overmolded, so its hard to know its there, but if you depress it, it indicates to the charger to stop charging (its not an "e-stop")
Have you heard about issues where Rivian’s plugged into Tesla Wall connector there are issues where the home breakers are melting? Everything is fine when plugged into a Tesla but when a Rivian via adapter there is a noise and some are having the melting issue.
Tom, thank you for this video. Since the Ford Lightning and Mach E have a pin to lock the dc fast connector or adapter with a locking pin. How does the car know when to release the pin so you can remove the adapter since there is no power flowing through it because you have to disconnect the nacs cable first ? I am concerned the adapter will be stuck on the car because the locking pin wont release.
While this is very cool and I'm excited to be able to use the Superchargers with my Bolt EUV, it would be nice to have a NACS adapter that worked for both for AC and DC charging so I don't have to have two adapters. It attaches to the J-plug (for support or sensors I'm assuming) so it would be nice if it could sense AC vs DC and work either way.
I have a Honda Prologue and I downloaded the Tesla app and set my vehicle as a Chevrolet Blazer (Recommended) it shower tthat the cord was connected, but the Tesla station was unable to detect vehicle. I also tried setting my vehicle in the app to Honda Prologue and it still was unable to detect my vehicle.
Yes it cost more. In the Tesla app it shows the cost at each charging station. I have a Tesla and a GM vehicle. In the Tesla app it shows me; let’s say $0.32 cents per kilowatt but if i go into the menu “charge your non tesla” the chargers have a higher price, I’ve seen $0.49 cents average.
I have a 2023 Ford Lighting and I have had some issues with the charging system (or not). I also have an EMPORIA Level 2 EV Charger that I use to charge my truck. I have the Amps set to 48amps when I originally bought it and it charged my truck with no problem. Then after some time it would not charge, I immediately thought it was the charger. After contacting and troubleshooting that system, I was sent another. And low and behold, the same problem existed. I then took my truck to the dealer to have it checked, I was told that they could not find any problems with the charging system. So, I hurried home to try out another charger, and what do you know, no change. The charger starts charging and once it hits 40amp it kicks off and starts over. Is there something that has changed in the last 2 months with Ford or is it Emporia, why can’t I go over 40amps to charge my 2023 For F150 Lighting.
There are enough Electrify America chargers (most of the chargers work) at almost all Wal-Mart these days across the nation. Not sure why we do have to worry about having to go to Tesla chargers.
EA is unreliable and if you travel to/through very rural areas that are far away from interstates, you need all of the options you can get at your disposal. The EV charging network is getting pretty decent, but there are still places that you can’t really get to/from, especially during the hot Summer when EVs hit thermal capacity issues.
@@yayinternets I just completed a trip from North NJ to San Diego CA on Nissan Ariya. I was able to charge at every Wal-mart on my trip (in Oklahamo I had to rely on previously unheard Francis chargers). I agree one or two chargers were unavailable at a few locations, but majority of them were in working condition.
I disagree, maybe your neck of the woods the network is fine, but in the west it’s not even close. The EA charge stations we do have are unreliable and slow. The access to the Tesla network has been a game changer out here.
None of the Walmarts in my area has EA charging stations. Tesla chargers are starting to become more common in remote areas. The nearest EA is 50 miles away. I rely on my home charging station. I ordered the A2Z pro as my free adapter for my Mack-E has been pushed off once again scheduled for October, but I've zero confidence it will arrive in 2024.
@@shawnomeara6153 There are still spots where Tesla charging isn't even that great. In Kansas most of the Tesla chargers are slow af. Driving through that windy state + slow charging can definitely be miserably slow.
I tested this with my Orignal A to Z adapter, the truck see the DC pins are connected & the level 2 wont communicate with the truck, it just says problem with cahrging session... but it's because the truck is looking for DC power & it's not present on the connector.. .. You can order an AC adapter but i've not tried it just know they make an AC to AC version.
The Lightning will charge at speeds up to 192 kW (That's the highest I've seen pictures of) for the first 8-10 minutes and then drop down to about 120 kW and hold that until over 70% SOC. When the Lightning was originally released, Ford did say 150 kW, but that was because they didn't want to explain the initial 8-10 minute "boost" that you get and I also think they wanted to under promise and over deliver.
Lightning owner wants to know if the Tesla adapter will be plug and charge thru the Ford network or will you need to use the Tesla app to start charging?
It works and charges you through the Ford app. You could alternately charge through the Tesla app if you wanted to, but you'd need to first turn off Plug & Charge in the Lightning.
I believe you must first have prioity update 24-PU0119-DCCHG4. "www.f150lightningforum.com/forum/threads/priority-update-24-pu0119-dc-chg4-tesla-supercharger-network.18550/ " to get plug and charge compatibility. I have the update, but not the adapter yet.
We have a Mercedes EQE SUV. What adapter can we use for NACS to CCS? Will these void our warranty? I don’t seem to be able to get an answer from Mercedes. Any Mercedes drivers out there using an adapter and what brand?
Mercedes EVs are not authorized to use Tesla Superchargers yet so no adapter will work. We're expecting it to happen sometime in the next few months, though. Any of the adapters in my video will work and are 100% safe to use, although when MB gets Supercharger access, they may have their own rules o which ones they want you to use.
Hello Tom, I’m a new BMW ev owner. I’m confused about using a Tesla charger. Can any non Tesla owner use the tesla chargers or does the car have to be approved?
Honest question: what is wrong with the first generation adapter ? Why would they discounted it so abruptly and introduce a pre-order second gen? Seems like something was seriously wrong with the first gen.
The locking mechanism on the version 1 of the adapter was not the most intuitive, we did have to help a lot of customers with it, because many of them thought the lock was automatic and they couldn’t charge. As an EVSE company, our goal is to provide easy to use products and version 1 was not the easiest to use. A radical change was needed, we don’t like wasting time or delaying changes, this is not us. Thank you.
I'd be pretty pissed if I was Tesla and people were lubing my connectors because a third-party manufacturer couldn't get a clearance fit in a mold correct.
What makes you think that the variation causing the problem isn’t variation in the Tesla connectors, rather than the adapters? The adapters had to be made “looser” to accommodate the likely variation in the Tesla connectors due to age and condition.
Yeah, I thought about that later. But I have plugged in with the others at high SOC and still didn't see 170. But as I said, it has nothing to do with the adapter.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughneylikely because your battery was nice and cool since you had just driven from home to the Supercharger. In the heat I’ve been getting horrible speeds with the Supercharger Network. I was getting as slow as 68kW off boost. I went to an EA next and was getting 114kW off boost. I think the Supercharger cables are subpar and can’t handle the high heat where the fat bulky EA cables handle the heat much better.

You showed the Wet Rag "Trick". Tesla is sending the police to your house. :) :)
Much obliged.
Also, any news on Volvo/Polestar date of access?
No just like no news for anyone else
By the end of 2024
I got mine as promised but yet to ever get to use it on my bolt.
I'm pretty sure you can push the white button next to the port on the truck to stop charging?
You can. The Tesla connector itself has a communication that will shut off charging safely, the other connectors and adapters don't
Hi Micheal,
This is very unlikely that the adapter caused this. We are very interested in knowing the outcome of your situation and repairs with Rivian. Truly, this is the first time we hear something like this despite having ten’s thousands of adapters being used worldwide everyday.
We have sent you an email.
Thank you.
I ordered it using your discount code. Thanks for the $20 off.
You're welcome!
How’s the A2Z working out in your Rivian and what are charge speeds like ?
Thank you for the information. I hope I can use this product for my 2023 VW ID.4
You will be able to once VW has Supercharger access
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney When do you think we will be able to use with ID.4?
Great video, will that work with a 2021 bolt? Does it need a special software update to work?
would you trust the A2Z Cybertruck adapter then? I'm looking for a CCS adapter that fits the cybertruck.
4:10 NIIIIICE!!!!!!!!!!!!
14:30 What preventing someone from disconnecting this cable while you are away drinking coffee?
Have you heard about issues where Rivian’s plugged into Tesla Wall connector there are issues where the home breakers are melting?
Everything is fine when plugged into a Tesla but when a Rivian via adapter there is a noise and some are having the melting issue.
When is Hyundai/ Kia/Genesis get onboard and get a NACS adapter approval? In 2024 they claim the #2 seller spot in USA.
As soon as you stop charging it unlocks. On my Mach E i usually press the button next to the charge port to stop. When you do you hear it unlock.
@@RickNoppenberger Thank you.
Thank you for the coupon code
Oh, if you accidentally start the vehicle while charging it also stops the Tesla charging.
I am not in a hurry to get any of these adapters. Hyundai EVs aren’t likely to have SC access until next year at the earliest.
I have a Honda Prologue and I downloaded the Tesla app and set my vehicle as a Chevrolet Blazer (Recommended) it shower tthat the cord was connected, but the Tesla station was unable to detect vehicle. I also tried setting my vehicle in the app to Honda Prologue and it still was unable to detect my vehicle.
any fix to your problem? it should work, although I know some Tesla stations only work with Teslas
Any idea when Hyundai and Genesis will be authorized to use Tesla SC?
how much does Tesla bill for non Tesla usage ? does the electricity cost more
Yes it cost more.
Can't wait for the official State of Charge LUBE to become available in the online store! :)
I have a 2023 Bolt EUV, will this work with it at Tesla Charging Stations?
Have you got any insight as to when the 500 EV vehicles from Nissan will gain access to Tesla Suoerchargers?
Thanks for the discount code
Still waiting since March 2024 sign-up for my Rivian adaptor ( from Tesla). Still crickets and Rivian is also not talking.
J3400 needs something like apple mifi certification so that the public have an idea of the product quality
when will we see 2024 e-transit reviews
Is this approved by GM? If not, can the warranty be voided if using this?
Hi Tom were I can get the 10% coupon for the A2Z adapter
It's "stateofcharge", but I'm not 100% sure if its still active.
Tom - I may be confused - the A2Z (or any adapter) won't work with say, a VW ID.4 or Ioniq 5? Even if you have a Tesla account and their app?
Correct. Not yet
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney thanks for the confirmation. Hopefully, this changes soon.
Will this adapter serve level 2 Tesla destination chargers as well as dcfc?
No. Just dc charging.
No. None of these adapters will work on AC. If they did they would be unsafe
If not can you recommend a level2 nacs adapter
@@tjackele Lectron makes one.
Thank you
How did you get 170kWh out of the charging station I thought the ford will only accept 150kWh?
The Lightning will charge at speeds up to 192 kW (That's the highest I've seen pictures of) for the first 8-10 minutes and then drop down to about 120 kW and hold that until over 70% SOC. When the Lightning was originally released, Ford did say 150 kW, but that was because they didn't want to explain the initial 8-10 minute "boost" that you get and I also think they wanted to under promise and over deliver.
Chevy customer service told me the adaptor will be sold through their app but, didn't know the price of it.
Dose this only work with Ford or Will this work with an Ioniq 5 or do I have to wait till Hyundai rolls their adapter out?
You have to wait
Is it possible to charge a Taycan with these adaptors with a Tesla supercharger?
Can you use the Typhoon pro or any ccs1/nacs adapter with level 2 charging?
No. None will
Lightning owner wants to know if the Tesla adapter will be plug and charge thru the Ford network or will you need to use the Tesla app to start charging?
It works and charges you through the Ford app. You could alternately charge through the Tesla app if you wanted to, but you'd need to first turn off Plug & Charge in the Lightning.
I believe you must first have prioity update 24-PU0119-DCCHG4. "www.f150lightningforum.com/forum/threads/priority-update-24-pu0119-dc-chg4-tesla-supercharger-network.18550/ " to get plug and charge compatibility. I have the update, but not the adapter yet.
My Mach e with a2z adapter works fine with plug and pay on supercharger
hi order on 9/25/2024 How long does it take to get the order send to Me ?
We have a Mercedes EQE SUV. What adapter can we use for NACS to CCS? Will these void our warranty? I don’t seem to be able to get an answer from Mercedes. Any Mercedes drivers out there using an adapter and what brand?
Mercedes EVs are not authorized to use Tesla Superchargers yet so no adapter will work. We're expecting it to happen sometime in the next few months, though. Any of the adapters in my video will work and are 100% safe to use, although when MB gets Supercharger access, they may have their own rules o which ones they want you to use.
We are ready to do a road trip, so I guess we’re out of luck?
Thank you.
Can these adapters be used in tandem with the ccs to chademo?
I'd be pretty pissed if I was Tesla and people were lubing my connectors because a third-party manufacturer couldn't get a clearance fit in a mold correct.
I agree
What makes you think that the variation causing the problem isn’t variation in the Tesla connectors, rather than the adapters? The adapters had to be made “looser” to accommodate the likely variation in the Tesla connectors due to age and condition.
How much weight can can the female end on the car handle?
I would think a lot. It seats far in and is very secure
Will it work on bmw i4?
Can use for equinox ev and audi q8 etron?
Yes. Once those vehicles are Supercharger enabled, which they aren't yet.

how many kWh is the max with this charger?
To answer my question 170kWh is the max! haha 16:15 ish
The adapter is rated for 1,000 volts and 500 amps, so it can deliver much more than 170 kW
Do you know how many kWh? I’m just super curious
You saw more power because you were at 45% when you started the charge because of the Ford Boost charge curve. Nothing to do with the adapter.
Lectron keeps error out and it will never go over 66 percent on my rivian.
Yeah I'm calling bull residue on GM getting access to teslas network.
