- Here's how engine oil lubricates your car's engine!
In this video, we will learn the importance of engine oil and how it flows from bottom to top and back down again through your car's engine lubrication circuit.
The purpose of engine oil is to lubricate and cool moving components. In this video, a VQ35DE Nissan / Infiniti 3.5L V6 engine was taken apart and its lubrication system is detailed.
Starting at the bottom, the oil pickup tube sucks oil into the oil pump, which is driven off the crankshaft. The gerator oil pump has a built in spring loaded pressure valve that returns excess oil back to its inlet. After running through the pump, oil is sent through the crank case to the oil filter, where it circulates past the oil cooler. It then flows back through the timing cover, and is sent to the main engine galley and the VVT gears in the engine head. The crankshaft main bearings, cylinder wall sprayers, connecting rods and piston heads all draw off the main engine galley that run down the middle of the engine's "V" shape. Camshaft bearings and timing chain tensioners are lubricated by secondary oil galleys tapping off the main galley, while the VVT solenoid has its own independent path.
Given the amount of small passages and tight tolerances in a modern engine, the type, amount and frequency of replenishment of engine oil is very important. Abuse and defective engine components could lead to excessive oil consumption or starvation resulting in a spun bearing or complete engine seizure.
Make sure you change your engine oil frequently!

I am studying mechanical engineering and what I am getting from this channel is much more understandable and informative than what I get from my college.
That's sad but this isn't mechanical engineering, this is internal combustion design, which is way more specific. I didn't learn any of this from my mech eng degrees either...

I am an interdisciplinary scientist for a living. I live to learn new things and although I'm classically trained in molecular biology, I can't get enough of other disciplines. By happenstance I ended up on your channel and can't believe how little I know about the magical mechanical compenents of modern vehicles. I am currently addicted to your channel and you deserve to know that. My most recent mind blowing experience was learning about the torque converter and how there is not a complete mechanical linkage from the engine to the road (except for in certain cruising conditions). My fluid mechanics class came flooding back in through my brain.

Good overview on why it is important to regularly change the oil and filter. Keep those passages and holes clear and avoid buildup of gunk. I have a 15 year old 3 liter Accord V6 with 350,000 kilometers and drive hard. Engine runs like new cuz I change the oil every 5 to 6k. It's that simple

@@speedkar99 Honestly, I really appreciate and enjoy your current work. I've served in the military as an auto mechanic (~2 year mandatory service as Korean), though I've never really learned all the science, design choices, and ins and outs of a car.
Just like some people say, you explain things very well - that's not at all an easy thing to do. When someone explains things well in a fun way, I can't help but pay attention (which is why I learn a lot less from books).
I most certainly learn a LOT from your work and so I must thank you. Also, I do find appearance of your brother's toiletry and underwear pretty hilarious, along with new addition of your wife's belongings.
Great explanation, was never sure how the oil flowed through the oil filter (guess you can teach an old dog a new trick). Sad that, as cheap as engine oil is, relative to repairs its the most neglected. Even cheap oil changed frequently is better than expensive oil left go. Who needs shop towels when you have family to donate to the cause. Thanks for the work you do on your channel we all appreciate the chance to learn from a great teacher.

Great video as always. Love your channel. (Previously you did a good job explaining how the A/C works and now I know why its colder when I step on the gas.) So I have the same engine that you recently showed in the Hyundai Kona, it's in my 2018 Elantra. I bought the base SE so I have the manual. 2 things maybe you can answer. I use a mobil 1 filter and also use synthetic oil. I change it at 4k maybe 4,500k. Is there any benefit or am I wasting my money changing it that early? Also the cap says to use 5w20. The book has 5w20 and 5w30 listed in the same temp parameter, (with 10w30) in a warmer bracket. Would you just keep using 5w20 like on the cap or would you be comfortable jumping to 5w30 considering it's in the same temp range?

I think you missed a very interesting chapter about oil viscosity. Lubrication is not a dry subject. Oil is the *blod* of ALL engines..
After showing all the oil galleries and variable timing gear oil pressure... it would be very interesting to note the timing solenoid is used to linearly adjust and make up for oil pressure differences...
You can show what happens when the filter is replaced and the oil circuits are all drained out.
You can talk about how to make friend with your engine lub system by letting the pressure reach everywhere before driving (crankshaft internal gallery feeding the "sprayer" that tries to lubricate the last piston Pin... imbalanced engine wear)
The importance of oil temperature (viscosity) before going up in the higher rpms
or engine & trany Rpm vs. lubrication vs. longevity 😂
[Be curious... look at huge maritime engines lubrication! Everything is huge but well lubed piston pins the size of a leg]

What are your thoughts on newer vehicles requiring 0W-20 oil? Some says it's necessary due to tighter component tolerances, but others claim it's so manufacturers can advertise better fuel economy
It's a combination of both, good oil flow in extremely cold climates, and work better with variable valve timine systems as explained with their tiny passages in the video. Going up a weight like 0w-30 or 5w-30 is a good idea if you tow, go off-road, or drive up mountains all the time because oil temperatures go through the roof.
Agreed. Economy and tighter tolerances are the main factors.

The said "drain bolt" is used to drill oil passages in engine block, bolt is used to close the oil passages drill hole so oil wont squirt outside and flows to intended areas.
They use pressed in ball spheres to seal off drilled galleries.
Why would they tap and put a bolt there if it isn't to be serviced?

@@speedkar99 maybe the drilled area is too fragile to put a sphere ball, so they decided to thread it and put softer bolt to seal off the hole.
Or they use it to test and make sure oil's flowing during manufacturing process.

@@wholeNwon The fundamentals of the engines, block design, material, pistons, rods, etc are pretty bulletproof in those cars. The rest of the drivetrain works well to provide a smooth experience too. Accessories to the engine are problematic in most cars, anyway. They're not for you if you don't like to wrench on your own car a little bit.
It's funny because I was in automotive classes in high school I always thought the oil passages in the crankshaft where just holes drilled into it and thought that they got splashed with oil and the crank/ rod bearings kinda kept let the oil in I had no idea crankshafts have a oil tunnel and the crankshaft actually has oil moving through it and if I didn't see this video I still would of never known I like to know how stuff works to the T and then I can wrap my brain around it better you really should to look into being a teacher for this stuff you'd definitely have some knowledge students after they were done with your classes

Electric cars - will do the same and more without the complexity.
Electric motors aren't exactly new... if it was somehow feasible to plug in an extension cord hundreds of miles long we would never have used gasoline engines to begin with! The problem is and remains taking the power with you. Gasoline is still the highest energy density substance we can easily create. Batteries are getting better, yes, but are at the moment slightly overhyped. They degenerate faster than is practical for heavy duty applications, and can't quite store the amount of energy needed for general use. Around town electric vehicles are great, but if you need medium to long distance the start to let you down.
I agree. We need more charging stations and longer range. Then electrics will replace gasoline.
Nevertheless it's not a so distant future. We just starting out as it was with gas engines over 100 years ago.
