I had the privilege to meet Gene at the Spro tournament weigh in. He's just like I figured he would be. We talked like we had known each other for years. Thanks for your passion for the sport and sharing your knowledge with us.
First? Two things I learned recently.. 1. Use pellets for a pellet gun for rattles. They sound duller than BB's. Sometimes the Bass doesn't want the louder sound. 2. I learned to stop water from getting into the frog, super glue the hole shut, then take a small, thin sewing needle an carefully punch a hole in the top of the frog about an inch from the hook on the top of the frog. Air will come out, but water rarely gets in.. Keep up the work on the Great Video's.
I can tell I'm learning stuff from you Gene because last weekend before I watched this video I broke two of the sliders on my Snap-on tool box. When I got ready to replace them some of the stainless steel bearings fell out. Immediately yelled at my buddies to catch all of them flying everywhere. They asked me why and I told them I needed them for my fishing stuff like my hollow-body topwaters. Love your channel and all the new tips and tricks I learned from you keep it up sir.
Thank you for the frog tips. I will make use of those tips for sure! Top Water fishing is my favorite and fishing a frog is my most favorite. At almost 70 years old I'm just getting back into fishing and boating again. Should've never stopped fishing, too many decades of missing out on this fun sport!
I haven't been messing with frogs much but I've tried a bit this year. I just could not ever hook up. Not one fish. I finally got one just 2 days ago and it was my pb! 7.41lbs on a walking frog! It was taking on a lot of water so I'll try the line wrapping and appreciate the tip on bending the hooks a bit. I'll try that too. Thanks Gene
uk1wildcats7 Nice my second largest was almost the exact same size on a frog. Cut the skirt as needed and yes bend the hooks slightly. It does help improve hook up. I did it to half my frogs.
Try this trick, I run a short piece of braided line from the eye one the nose of the frog, through the body, and out the rear hole. There I attach an additional single hook that trails right between the frog's legs, this has made my hookup ratio skyrocket. Sometimes before casting I tuck the added hook into the Frog's body to create a treble shape with the hooks. I was getting frustrated of getting heavy hits but no hookups so I just thought of doing this and it works great. Good luck, let me know if you try it and it works for you!
Sometimes I'll take a permanent Sharpe and make small colors changes in the belly. I added spots on a white frog and cought my biggest frog bass on it. 7.4lbs in Northern CA. Which was huge for the area Inwas in.
I like to cut the legs and seal them up right out of the pack on every brand besides r2s and a few others who made them sealed already. But I like to pull the hooks out through the bottom, wrap the hooks together or weld them ( depending how much tinker time I have ) then slide red shrink wrap over the hooks and wraps past where the bottom hole and heat it up, then if the line tie doesn't have any thread between the 2 eyes I'll tie some thread around it to help hold the nose and keep water out from the nose. Then run some heavy braid through front to back and pull the hooks back into the frog. And either tie the outside of the nose of the frog or glue it around the eye. Then I'll heat up an old flippin hook and burn a hole in the back between the legs to let air out. Best way I have found to do it. Sounds like alot but after the first few it takes around 5 minutes start to finish.
Hey Gene, Will you make a video on reading your electronics and what to look for? Understanding contour lines, points, flats and locating underwater structure?
Nick Francisco I need this too. Just started using electronics a couple months ago and I don't know really how to tune it or know for sure what I'm seeing. Hummindbird helix 7 with DI
Hey man. Really like all your different videos. Me and my buddy are going to g'ville for both our first times. Looking forward to the experience. This is one of 3 lakes we are going to hit before I go for lucky number 7 deployment. Maybe could luck out and meet you while we are there too. Good luck to you and keep up the great videos
Thanks for all the awesome tips, Gene! Curiosity finally got me, so I'll need to learn that whip finish for my LiveTarget mouse 🐁🎣 One tip I can offer, if you or a bass accidentally tear your frog's hole, I've had good luck repairing them with "shoe glue"; it's designed as a spot-repair for shoes (a fantastic invention for skateboarders! 🛹), but seems to do well in repairing a frog as well 👍 So far, at least; will post updates if it suddenly catches on fire or melts the frog, but I reckon that would've already happened by now.
Thanks for the tips Gene! You to come do a M and G in East Tennessee! Would be an honor to meet ya. Couldn't imagine ever fishing with ya haha anyways, Thank you for all you do and all you've taught me so far!
Funny that you used a whip finish because I was just thinking I wonder if some good Kevlar thread would work for this. It would be a breeze to do that mod on a fly vice with a bobbin I feel like
Where do you order the bells from ? I’m getting into frog fishing and I am going to order some 1/4” in diameter from Amazon and didn’t know if that’s about the size you use
Good video, thanks. I like the pop frogs for bass. Did you say tie flies? Do you still do that? Fly fishing for trout in NC is my religion. I only bass fish when I can’t roam a big creek for a couple days.
I had trouble getting all these noisemakers into my frogs. Finally I cut a slit in the top of the frog (figuring it would not be seen by the fish), inserted my bells and whistles and then superglued it shut. Will that keep the water out? It seemed to work on one frog but not another.
thanks been getting into top water fishing never new a hole lot about it I like all your vids me and my 7 year old go out on our pound getter lol trying to learn about lake an river fishing not doing to good but trying if ever in alabama want to show some tricks in person hit me up lol I could use the learning lol. thanks for your vids very helpful
I haven't even got a sniff at my frog the last two times went fishing. Spooks are working a lot better here in Sinaloa, Mexico whenever you can Mr. Flukemaster please do another spook video, bass or saltwater I'd watch either one. Saludos
Hey Boss? Audio check ! Distorted audio (Microphone gain is way to high) not to mention, makes the video kind of rough to listen to.....but on the positive side, another great video!!!!! Thanks for the advise "Teach"
+John A Schwamm Sr I wish I could afford a cameraman so I can have my audio continuously checked. It's hard to do when self filming with GoPro cameras. I never know if the audio comes out until I get home.
Been subscribed for quite awhile and I know this is an older video but my question to you is How can you walk a frog if you can't stand up for long periods because of health issues
kagnewmp12 shorter rod and practice. I can barely do it sitting on a kayak seat but with a fair bit of practice you could probably get it goin. Lots of people use a 6’5”, 6’6”, 6’10” rod for frogs. Maybe you could try a 6’? Hope you get it figured
Gotta watch them recording levels for your audio man. You wana keep it between -6 and -18db so you don't get that terrible peaking sound. Love your videos! Not-So-Long time subscriber lol!
I just take an xacto knife and put a small slit in the top of the frog slide the rattles in then use mend it or super glue and I don't have problems with it.
The problem when bending frog hooks out is that when fishing matts and slimmy stuff out gets caught on the hook. Can be very annoying. Good when fishing pads though.
ok Gene, great video as always but it's time for a video of all your secrets lol...I want to know every little tip and trick you know! I mean everything since you started way back when....I'm sure the other 200,000 subs do too! ROLL TIDE

Every time I watch one of your vids, I become a better fisherman (and I've been fishing for 30 years)! Thanks for learnin' us Gene!!!

Thanks Tom. Take care of yourself and get well soon.
Flukemaster thank you I'm in a wheelchair and am on constant pain meds but am getting better.
Trimming the legs and adjusting the prongs on the hooks upward slightly works. Fish on!

Any advice for fishing in garden lakes ga. I just moved in to town
Good video, thanks. I like the pop frogs for bass. Did you say tie flies? Do you still do that? Fly fishing for trout in NC is my religion. I only bass fish when I can’t roam a big creek for a couple days.
That's what I grew up doing. It's been a while though.
I use electric wire zip ties to do the same thing along with a bit of super glue. Thanks for the tip.
The whip finish. YES
Good info thanks!
You caught me lol my mind was deep in the gutter 😂😂😂
I had trouble getting all these noisemakers into my frogs. Finally I cut a slit in the top of the frog (figuring it would not be seen by the fish), inserted my bells and whistles and then superglued it shut. Will that keep the water out? It seemed to work on one frog but not another.
This is great gene!

What about two glass beads??
The problem when bending frog hooks out is that when fishing matts and slimmy stuff out gets caught on the hook. Can be very annoying. Good when fishing pads though.
