    I came to an alarming realization in the last few weeks: I never give my mind a break. Maybe it's the society that we live in, maybe it was an addiction to productivity that I have developed but either way, in recent times I've started to feel bogged down, like I'm trying to run through mud. I'm constantly pushing to do more without considering my wellbeing and the importance of stopping and reflecting.
    So I decided to do something a little different. I gave myself an entire day to reset: I would do nothing stimulating for 24 hours. No work, no internet, no exercise, no music, no reading and no food. I wanted to see what happen.

    I totally recognize I bent the rules a little bit by documenting my experience. I'm okay with that. I plan to do this again in the future without any cameras involved, but I wanted to share what it was like for the first time.

      Pretty cool work!! That sinking feeling of letting your day slip through your fingers is very relatable. In my case it's pure perfeccionism. But maybe in your case it's something else.

    I'm the opposite. I have too much time on my hands and nothing to do yet I have this fear of not getting things done. I stimulate my brain with social media and TH-cam to get away from those thoughts, drowning myself in passiveness.

      I'm the same way. I went on a week long social media detox however and it really helped me gain some perspective. Now I'm a lot more conscious of socials and am trying to limit my use of them in a way that's beneficial for me (not quite there yet but trying). I do recommend uninstalling socials for a short while at least tho, it helps clear your mind and realise the amount of times you impulsively try to go onto such apps without really thinking about it. Other than that, all we can really do is experiment on ourselves and see what works for us. Sometimes you just have to break the routine like Nathaniel has done for himself

      I still think your situation applies to the subject matter of the video. The dopamine thing is different for us all. He's addicted to working and keeping his mind busy and only he knows how that isn't the best thing for him. You're addicted to the constant information feed online, FOMO, "content", however your wanna put it. And you know how it is something you'd rather not have but keep coming back to. The idea of dopamine fasting really appealed to me. The "fast" might not be the same for everyone. But most of us do know what we're supposed to target.

    "I've always had a hard time with ending the day" - when I was in college, one day, I just *quit* I decided that 8:00 was the end of my day and I stopped working that day. And the next. And I kept it up. I wrote down anything I had left to do before bed and then worked on it first thing in the morning. Writing it down enabled me to release the feeling of 'I need to XYZ!!' that kept me up at night. I also found that quitting before I was past the point of exhaustion enabled me to better organize my life. I'd clean up more. I'd pick an outfit for the next day. I'd take better care of my body in general. It turned out that "letting go" of some time actually saved time in the long run. That was easily the happiest and most productive period of my life.

    11:58 In my opinion having unlimited access to anything is just killing the magic of it. Like Netflix for T.V. Shows, Music streaming services and a lot of other things. Scarcity is what makes things, valuable. Isn't that the rule of commodities, diamonds are rare and so expensive.

      When I was little The Wizard of Oz came on TV ONCE a year. When it was over you knew you would see it again a year later. Same thing with Christmas shows like Rudolph and Frosty. You hung on to every word and didn't even go to the bathroom because you didn't want to miss a thing. Your comment reminded me of this.

    Hi, I attempted this yesterday after watching this video. It was an interesting experience - definitely the longest day I've had in a while. Got up around 8am, did some meditation, journaling, a bit of stretching. Around noon I went out and was outside for 2-3 hours. I felt a bit more aware of things around me and even though the weather wasn't great it was still good to be outside. When I came back I decided to have an nap and slept for OVER 2 HOURS. Maybe my body really was that tired and I hadn't acknowledged it. After that I meditated and journaled a bit more. Around 8 I decided to break my fast, and had some protein and veg, really simple but tasted so good and weirdly I got full really fast. I realise I don't take the time to actually appreciate the good food I get to eat every day. I then decided to do a bit of work on my laptop for 1hr and even with a light filter my eyes felt very tired in front of the screen. I decided to go to bed and end the day. Overall I didn't do the full 24hr but I think I learned a fair bit. There was a dread at the start of my day for not doing anything that had slowly got replaced with the confidence that I can do anything and I always have a choice. I realised how much pressure I put on myself to get so many things done and to get them done the right way. I also noticed how much time there is in the day and in how much of it I numb myself with my phone and the through the Internet just so I don't have to look at the current moment. Usually when I get up in the morning I feel very irritable and frustrated straight away. The morning after doing this challenge is the first time in a while that I've felt so peaceful. Overall I guess this was worth trying. A new and odd experience. Thanks for reading :)

      @Marcus TH I dont agree with the idea that he thinks it is worth doing because it is "meaningful". Pretty sure he says its worth the experience. Because thats what life and living should be about: Experiencing. When we are in the perfect place where we feel save enough and experience awe. To experiment for experimentation sake, not primarily for results. I am not sure about you, but thats when I feel most alive and fullfilled. So I guess in a sense it is meaningful and worth pursuing. And I think thats also how people get wise.
      Not sure I agree with what you are on about with hipster and pretending. Most of the concepts and methods presented in his videos are around for centuries or decades. Just because everybody nowadays thinks that he/she has to reinvent the wheel to be someone, doesnt mean he is a hipster to try out field tested methods or traditions. Maybe you think he is just doing this purely for attention and success, not for him personally. While I cant confirm nor deny, I do not get those vibes from his videos. If that would be the case, he would have a whole team around him, making all the boring stuff for him. But from how it looks he does it all on his own, so I guess he isnt too much into the whole deal of economically milking his success and rather using his success to have more opportunities of doing what he wants to do by providing him with the money so he can fully focus on it.
      I dont know you, but based on this one comment, you sound like you are very success oriented yet frustrated because you feel like you dont have the success yet you think you deserve or think you should have. So you vent it by tearing down other successful people who you feel like dont deserve it because of how they got their success. Maybe because you think for sucess you have to not be yourself. Maybe that adds a bit of some self loathing too, who knows. Its just my bad assessement of your depressed comment.

    It is a culture thing. I live in a country where life revolves around friends, family and free time. Those are priorities in life and we all strive to complete the work just to be able to spend time longing around with close people. And those who are obsessed with productivity and work are different, and non typical. I hope pther cultures help you relax a bit a reset ypur priorities even just for one rest day.

      @@joeycollins4838 cool :) I think that is the first thing Americans (and many other tourists too) notice when they come here. It is a very relaxed culture. tourists always say all we do is sit and drink coffee all day. It isn't completely true, it's more complex than that, but it is definitely an important part of our day. You get together with your friends and just have coffee and talk. As often as you can. And oftentimes you'll see people just sitting and reading newspapers together and having coffee and not even talking, just being together. And another ritual people have here is to meet with their friends or co-workers (which is often the same) before work for coffee, which can be as early as 7 in the morning and those meetings are short, maybe an hour the most, and then you go to work. I'd personally rather sleep, and I never meet with people that early, but I understand why people do it. Ita much easier to go into work that way, you feel much more positive. So yeah. Being lonely or isolated or too focused on work is definitely not a peoblem here. But we have a lot of other terrible problems, as any country I guess.

      myflyingkidney Yeah every country has its own catch, but that's very interesting how it's so much more family and friend oriented than mainly work in Croatia. I'm only in highschool at the moment but with america's state i've been interested in after graduating to study abroad and maybe move out of country. I've heard new zealand is great but now i'd like to look into Croatia more! I love learning about other countries and their cultures :)

    "I'm already like an adult." I love that line, and I don't think that feeling ever really goes away. Intellectually we now we are older but we don't really feel like a grown up. Maybe not everyone, but a lot of people. :)

      Wow there is something to that, my generation was the transitional internet generation, I feel we got all of the good stuff, curiosity, vastly more educated, more connected. You guys got a lot of the bad stuff, anxiety, extrinsic self-worth, poor focus etc. But hey there are probably an endless amount of good things to go with it. I do sense there is a rising tide of people seeking to distance themselves from media and tech, get back to a simpler analogue time.

      @@MrNiceHk so true! We are basically one big study on what online interactions do to us as humans. There is no long-term studies available, it's all real time. I am not upset, I find the times we live in extremely exciting! And if anything, I hope that we learn to deal with anxiety etc. earlier on in life because of it. But you are not wrong. The numbers speak against us!

    Nathaniel, you probably hear this a lot but you really are an inspiration. You seem to have yourself and your life a lot more figured out than me, and at the age of 21! I am 23 and I feel a lot of affinity with you. I've always had that same sense of pressure to always be productive. I feel I've lost track of my goals the last 18 months or so. I graduated from university and was working a shitty job but to save up money so I could spend 6 months or so in South America, immersing myself in Spanish. Sadly Covid derailed my plans several times and although I did manage to learn Spanish from home, I feel I spend far too much time in that shitty job whilst my peers passed me by. But your videos are inspiring me to reclaim my path and get back on track. Thank you and I hope life continues to bring you blessings.

      Thank you both for the answers. The brain craving something more rewarding or even complex is definitely a big problem for a lot of people with addictions. I think the complex part imo is the worst because you’ll find yourself digging deeper and deeper to find something equally as rewarding as when you first started

    I've been doing a reiteration of this for the past year. Throughout my entire life, there has always been stress and chaos and turmoil in every aspect. I had a messy childhood, traumatically injured teens (I broke my neck and had complications), lots of personal struggles throughout college, and lived in China for a year as an ESL teacher who said yes to everything.
    Throughout this past year, I've had to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life because I discovered teaching isn't for me. And I finally feel like I have actually rested fully and recharged my batteries. Now I'm moving to Europe in 75 days to start the grad school program of my dreams and I never would have discovered even my new field without having had this mental reset. I highly recommend doing a mind reset!

    I've been feeling very absent during conversations with people (even with you, maybe you noticed), or even when I drive sometimes (which is dangerous I know..) and i've been wondering why. I think I need more balance too. I'll stick to 10min / day of meditation and 20min of stretching/yoga to disconnect because this has helped me tons in the past and I miss it. I'd like to find a better balance in my routine and have habits that keep my mind clear instead of having to go full on 24 hours. This video really made me think about how I could balance my own life as well and this is very valuable. Thank you

    I turn off all notifications on all my devices for this reason. I am generally not very productive and have low concentration, so this has really helped me a lot. I only have notifications on for phone calls and the app I use to help me form habits via daily commitments. All else is off at all times.

    When you talked about 'Where dd my life go I'm 21' I reliased, yea I'm 19, me too. I think this sort of thing is very useful, I every week I dissconect, turn my phone off and play some games or do some art without being reachable and it allows me to think freely & imagine.
    But I no longer think of free days as wasted days - I beilive the more time we take on self care the better our work will be as a result. So take breaks dude!
